Emerson flagged my review from years ago so I'm rewriting to clarify that I've been there, several times. We live in town and I've had to visit multiple departments, including the ER for both myself and taking my parents. In the 10 years or so since I first left the review, I can honestly stay I stand by my original assessment. If you, literally, don't think you'll survive the drive to Lahey or Mass General then certainly go here. Otherwise, do whatever you can to get to a better hospital. Aside from my own 1-star experiences, I've heard multiple stories of similar experiences of close friends and immediate family getting grossly misdiagnosed by Emerson. Most recently they sent a friend home after a CAT scan with a "concussion" which, fortunately, the Lahey Clinic almost immediately discovered were severe brain lesions. My father was in a car accident where Emerson missed a broken back and concussion - again, fortunately, caught days later by another hospital. It's unfortunate as we live about 2.3 miles away but between our experiences and local paramedics recommending other hospitals, it's simply not worth stopping unless absolutely critical. (Side note: Yelp's, "Not Recommended" reviews for Emerson are worth a read.) read more

This is a last place to go unless you are Desperate. I have seen questionable behavior in terms of people of color. If you are white you should be fine but if you are other shade I would pass. one particular area in pre ops nurse was miserable and heard how she spoke to one of the only people of color working there . read more

This is a review for the lab at the main campus in Concord. I arrive on a Sat am to drop off a sample for the lab. There's a crowd of people waiting by the registration desk with the window open. The 2 women at the desk don't acknowledge anyone. So I get in the back of the line to wait. Waited 5 minutes in line before being told by someone else in line told me I need to write my name on the list to be seen by registration, so I add my name to the list. See there's a window with information about drop off, so I go up to the window and they say I have to wait to be seen by registration to simply drop off a sample. Staff leaves the window open at the registration open. So you can hear all information about patients meeting with staff. Not very private. After 45mins I finally spoke up as I had a time sensitive sample to drop off. They bring me into the registration and tell me and I to complete new patient information even though my doctor was in network. read more

This REVIEW is for Emerson Wound Care on Baker Ave Ext. AVOID at all costs! Rude middle-aged Karen's (several of them) doing nothing but eaves dropping while I was checking in for treatment. Everything was fine once I was in the treatment room until I asked if I would be seen by an MD. Older woman, RN? Receptionist?, didn't answer me. She just left the room. Minute later she comes back with 2 other Karens. (One literally looked like she just woke up. Gym clothes and messy hair.) They didn't like that I was asking questions. They kept talking over me. I couldn't get a word in. I was told I was rude and told to leave. This hospital and wound care should be shut down. The reviews for Emerson are horrible and they do nothing to improve it. I'll be reporting all of this to the state. read more

this review is specific to the ER and hospital, not the separate clinical practices. I checked into the ER with shaking, chills. They immediately noted an infection and the nurse was a GREAT stick inserting the IV, something always traumatic for me. But... The ER is complete shithole. Think high school from 1960s. The toilet is so gross it makes the potty on a 40 yr-old Amtrak train car look good. Doors don't even lock so anyone can walk in while you're having a bad episode in there. They did blood & urine cultures, key for tracking the infections (in both blood & urine) I was admitted to the hospital by the end of the day. But... they have NO infectious disease person on staff. They have a consultant who swings by at 6AM for a few minutes then goes to his regular job at an clinic. I got IV antibiotics in the hospital and was making enough progress they wanted to discharge me: good. My last day there, they said I would need IV antibiotics, not oral, based on the resistance of my bacteria strain to oral meds. The PA simply stated this, without showing any of the underlying test results on the cultures. Even though they said they only needed 7-10 days of perfusion, they would need to install a "PICC" line, a catheter that goes to near my heart. Which sucks, but if medically necessary, I want to live. They said they'd set met up with an outside service that would insert the line and "take care of everything at home." Then the service called me, saying they wanted to set up "training" the next day for me at home. I said, whoa boy, why do I need "training?" The answer was that "taking care of everything," as promised by Emerson would mean the service would train me to administer the perfusions myself. Which means flashing the IV with blood, flushing with saline, administrating the perfusion, then cleaning the line UNDER STERILE CONDITIONS. I said, "are you kidding? With ONE hand?????" Not to mention I'm sensitive to body fluids, needles and so on. "Oh no problem, we can train your spouse to do it." I told them, and the PA that having a TRAINED PROFESSIONAL administer the perfusions was a NON-NEGOTIABLE REQUIREMENT. Meanwhile I tried calling the infectious disease "consultant" at his private practice. After 20 min on hold to talk to someone at their nurses' station they said "oh no, you can't communicate directly with him. The proper channel is to bring it up to the attending at Emerson, who'd then message him. Are you kidding I asked? An attending who doesn't have the infectious disease expertise? And, WHERE IS THE DATA SHOWING the antibiotic effectiveness? a few hours later, they said, "It's your lucky day! we found ONE oral antibiotic that's effective on your blood-borne pathogen. We can release you with an Rx from CVS!! So I was released but there is STILL no data showing the meds I have are effective. Maybe they just told me that to get me out of their hospital???? So, while the clinical practices at the hospital may be OK, AVOID THE ER AND HOSPITAL read more

I walked into the ER the day after Thanksgiving because I had fallen ( was tripped) at the Turkey Trot 5k on Thanksgiving morning. I had a black eye, small lacerations and road burn on my wrists. I felt fine but family pressured me to see a doctor. I was in and out in 1 hour. I know you can't count on this but the expertise of the initial triage was impressive. 2 minutes into the triaging, she called over for a wheelchair to take me in for a CT scan of my head. 2 minutes later I was getting the CT scan. Next I was put in an ER room. Immediately Dr Sockwell and a nurse came in. An ekg was being done before I knew it. Results of both were reviewed. I passed! Next, the wounds were cleaned and bandaged, I was given a tetanus shot , got my discharge papers. read more

I went to the ER because I was feeling sick and was held against my will. all my rights were taken from me and I had to give up all my belongings. The doctor asked what I wanted and told staff to treat me a certain way. They even took my phone. I got worse and was coughing. The next morning they released me and told me I tested positive for influenza A. I was so traumatized it took me months to even right this review. I asked for one of those support people and they didn't give me one. Dont come here. read more

Horrible experience in emergency room on Memorial Day. Witnessed disgusting treatment of their mental health patients - they sat them in bright hallways all day and night. no beds, no ability to recline. no access to books, phones, magazines...it was like something out of sad, tragic movie. And one person wanted to sit up and was then physically restrained, 8 people on one small woman, one orderly had his knuckle right in her jaw, as she was crying out in pain, she was not fighting, but they were abusive, nonetheless. Some of the specialists that work out of Emerson Hospital are great, but if you have to be admitted to the hospital, go to another hospital if you can. I was admitted to Emerson Hospital a few years ago and was in the intensive care unit for a few days (no need to get into detail with why I was there) and the doctor working in the ICU wanted to put me on a medication that I can't have. And my mom was with me then and both she and I told the doctor multiple times that I can't have that medication, and the doctor just looked at my mom and I like we had no clue what we were talking about, and gave me that medication anyway (via IV drip). So my mom found the phone number for my specialist who knows I can't be on that medication, called him on her phone, and had him talk directly to the ICU doctor, and he told the doctor to take me off that medication immediately, and he did. They did save my life during that stay though, so I'm very grateful for that. Then a couple of years ago I was admitted to Emerson Hospital again for a week for a very rare syndrome so I could get started on treatment for it immediately, because I was declining rapidly. And it took 3 or 4 nurses to figure out how to get my treatment started using the notes my specialist for my syndrome left them (the treatment was administered via IV, by the way). Also, they drugged me out on morphine that week because I was in so much pain, and people' with my syndrome shouldn't be on opioids. And I was incontinent and couldn't really get up to use the bathroom (I could just barely pivot to a bedside commode), so I was in diapers. And one day they left me in a soaking wet diaper for about 24 hours. And finally, with my treatment I'm supposed to drink a lot of water with it, and my water pitcher was empty. So I asked my nurse or whoever to refill my water pitcher, and it took them a half hour (and my mom who was with me asking multiple times for me to get some water). And when the lady came to actually refill my water she was rude and said I shouldn't expect to receive water within a half hour because she has other patients to attend to (or something similar). And I know for a fact she only had like 3 other patients to attend to at the time. read more

A couple of years ago, I was admitted to Emerson Hospital with a valid Medical Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment (MOLST)--an end-of-life directive thoughtfully prepared by my Primary Care Physician and me. It clearly included my Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order and reflected my wishes for care aligned with my values and rights. The following morning, I was shocked to learn that the ER hospitalist--an independent contractor--unilaterally overrode my directive. Without any consultation with me or my Primary Care Physician, she changed my status from "No Code," which honors my MOLST and DNR, to "Full Code," authorizing full resuscitative measures. This decision directly violated my constitutional right to self-determination and disregarded the legal and ethical foundation of patient autonomy. I left the hospital immediately, without treatment. read more

Despite the prevalence of SA among women, the staff do not seem to be trained in trauma informed care and this hospital doesn't honor patient requests to be treated by women to make them feel safe. will be looking elsewhere for care going forward read more

My 13 year old son had severe abdominal pain. Local urgent care care sent us to Emerson ER. No triage nurse available for 20 minutes for potential life threatening appendicitis. As a dad it really sucks to see your child crying doubled over and no help available. No idea how bad it was. We need to fix our ER system as I don't think this is just Emerson. When they did see him the charge nurse was unable to get an IV in him. Left him with bad bruise. People were stacked up in hallways. Third time there and always long waits. Their ER system is broken. Clearly they need more beds and more help. read more

I came here today because it's the closest to my daughter's school. I knew what I'd been getting into since the last time I was here, I was treated less than a person. I thought things might have changed, though, since it's been 5 years. I learned today that I can be wrong about things. I showed up at 8 a.m. with no one in the ED. At 950, I asked if I'd be waiting longer since it's been 2 hours just waiting. The very kind admin let me know that they are trying to clear the ED. Idk how accurate that is since ppl are getting called before me. I know hospitals triage so cases go by symptoms but since there is no privacy when ppl check in I know what everyone is here for and outside of the dude with the broken ribs that can't breath we all on the same level of urgency. Had to get up and ask again cause all these ppl they were taken back were not coming back out. The admin person told me they were getting called in for tests. I now know that was a lie. They now have come and said that I need to go get seen at another area. I said ok where do I go? They said I had to wait to be called by a triage nurse to go to the other side, so I was still waiting in the ED. I for sure will never come back here again. Things have never changed. There is a lack of communication between staff and patients. They keep sending this poor admin/registration to give us information they should be providing, and that's only after I asked her to check the status for me. It's 11am, and I came here for her to tell me she is going to give me antibiotics without a diagnosis. I have to refuse because I just had c diff and h pylori, so antibiotics are to be avoided. I asked what she is prescribing the antibiotics for if she is saying there is nothing wrong with me. 1/24/2024 update It's the next day I'm at the VA urgent care. Guess who has an ear infection? Please don't bring your kids here. Imagine if I didn't come get checked today. Smh read more

Parking situation is terrible. When I spoke with security about the situation, they were unhelpful. My husband was in the ED with a cardiac event. It took me 20 minutes to park the car. Had a security guard been checking the parking lot, one could have helped guide me and others to proper parking. read more

I arrived at the ER with acute appendicitis. I left 24 hours later after a successful appendectomy. The ER experience was just awful. Stuck in a hallway waiting for hours to see the doctors and never given a room. Also, they were unable to provide me with my meds, saying it's not a high priority with a surgery patient. The surgery and post op care was exceptional. Nurses were attentive, helpful and kind. Anesthesiologist was terrific too. I didn't see the surgeon post op but assume he was good. Summary: if they can fix their ER, it would be an excellent hospital. read more

I can't believe everyone's comments on here about mean nurses and staff! I ended up in the ER 8 times this year due to my disease and was hospitalized for a week at one point. Everyone tried their best to help me even though they are so busy since Nashoba hospital closed so they have twice as many people coming in. Only one doctor I didn't like because they said I had anxiety instead of listening to my symptoms but eventually I found a great one. The nurses are angels too god bless them all! Also people commenting about paying for parking I think I only paid once in 8 trips! Just get your ticket validated it's not that hard. My only complaint might be a few times I would get a nurse or two who couldn't get my IV in properly. I would recommend this hospital but due to experience try not to end up in the ER at peak hours because you will most likely be out of there at 5 am! read more

Avoid at all costs, or it will cost you! I came to this hospital's urgent care room almost a year ago for a simple strep throat test. I waited over an hour and a half as the only person in the waiting room and was told I didn't have strep throat after I was tested. Paid my bill and forgot about the whole ordeal (I did end up having strep, went to my physician the next week). Fast forward a couple months and I received a letter in the mail stating I still had a balance due (very small, about $20). No big deal, I know I paid the full bill already by check but whatever it's 20 bucks who cares. So I went to the link provided in the letter to pay, and of course the online payment portal was undergoing "maintenance" and was unavailable. no worries, I will call them to ask about the charge.. no answer on the phone. I leave my name and number and tell them to call me back. no response.. I receive another letter 2 weeks later, no response again over the phone, and the online portal is still down.. starting then I received a letter every other week threatening to send my $20 bill to COLLECTIONS if I do not pay up! I emailed their customer care department who asked me for a bunch of details, which were provided along with photos, and have never heard back from them. I have received 15-20 letters total from Emerson stating I need to pay up or face collections, and every time I call and receive absolutely no answer. last month I received the final letter from Emerson which was promptly followed by a letter from a collections agency. I've called Emerson twice since that day regarding this and they have not answered the phone or returned my calls. I will be contacting a lawyer soon if the collections agency refuses to clear the charge. I would not trust Emerson hospital if my life were at risk and neither should you. read more

I guess I am used to a different standard of care. this place sucks. the orderlies are rude and may or may not pass along your messages to the nurses. the nurses can't ever seem to contact the docto. I have been waiting over 18 hours on a requested for antacid. this is a mountain too far for Emerson hospital. I had the pleasure of being invited to the hospital for a relatives birthday. The service she received made it seem as if she was on welfare. The lactation team wasn't called until the next day. The nurses never help unless you're their patient. The night staff is worse than day except the tall lady in the blue two piece scrubs. She is amazing. I would never recommend this hospital. They don't make you feel welcome after having the baby or come to show new moms what to do. read more

Went to the Emerson Hospital emergency room tonight. I was seen immediately and put it in the hallway as the rooms were filled. I had sliced my thumb pretty badly. Moments later, a woman named Kaitlyn Bolduc, PA, came to see me. She said to wait a moment and then wheeled me into a quiet room, did a quick and thorough exam of my thumb, numbed it, cleaned it, and put two stitches in perfectly placed to stop the bleeding. I have to hand it to her she should be the face of Emerson Hospital - extremely compassionate and competent. Two thumbs up!!! (one healing). read more

Then I was told that they would call me back within 48 hours to make an appointment with me after they had checked my Insurance. What??? I was also informed that I had to preregister within 24 hrs of my appointment or my appointment would be cancelled. If I cancelled within 24 hrs of my appointment, I would be charged $50. What?? I was referred to Emerson after striking out with another doctor he referred me to the weight loss program at Emerson however, after a year, nothing happened all that happened with several hospitalizations. Last one was where I was medically kidnapped I was held against my will all because I said that I no longer Wish to continue care there. The rules kept changing and every time I tried to get help they took away my button. I was covered in bruises and scars and almost a year later I still can't get my records because their doctor blocked them they determined I was a psych case, even though in other parts of the Rockford, they said there was actually something wrong because of them I went for weeks without any nutrition I got to the point where I could barely walk or function They took away my belongings and stole my credit card and charged over $3000 on it. They never returned half my belongings and wouldn't allow me to check if they were all there. Well, some of the nurses were fabulous some of them or not I had one nurse call me a Karen nurse scream at me while she was catheterizing me because I accidentally touched her. I wasn't given any choices on my treatment and told that I made the whole thing up which is a complete lie they tried to leave stories about me to cover their mistakes read more

Not great care at all they had three staff members one was making fun of a Muslim woman who was going through challenges, laughing at her and mimicking her prayer to Allah and then they had two men talking about how there was this patient that was "the sexiest man alive, and he wanted to follow this man in the hospital room absolutely horrible services. Do not waste your time. Hopefully this review changes the way they deal with their clients there, and hopefully some jobs are taken and replaced with better doctor The hospital is not a club. It's a place to take care of people not brag about relationships and bully people. I hope the head manager at Emerson sees this one and fires the people who were involved absolute shame. read more

Saving grace was the actual ER doctor. He was caring and patient and listened. However... Was expecting nurses to treat patients with respect too much? The nurses had terrible bedside manners. They mocked and made fun of patients. Name calling and whatever's. It's super unprofessional and disrespectful. They were scrolling away on their phones and gossiping without being attentive to patients. Please if don't like your job just leave. People don't come to ER to get pushed over the edge. Bloodwork was done in an extremely demeaning and condescending fashion - constant belittling and borderline insulting to patients (couldn't get an IV in after 3 tries). Distasteful jokes were cast. Downright unskillful. How were they hired??? Imagine someone who's grasping for last straws and running into them. This is not pushing patients in the right direction or helping in anyway. Would refrain from seeking ER care at this location from now on until management can properly address this. It's truly shocking how talking down on patients has become a norm. read more

While on vacation I developed horrible pain in abdomen and back. Fearful of a kidney stone, I went to Emerson. I had the absolute best experience from registration to nurses to techs to PA to doctor. Everyone was so kind and caring. Mark, my PA, was one of the best medical professionals I've ever met. He continuously kept us updated and thoroughly explained everything with a genuine heart. While I hated spending time at the hospital while on vacation, the staff there really made it as pleasant as it could be. read more

Best food in a hospital so far, I know, I know that's a low bar = hospital food and I agree. But when you're in there and need to eat those small levels make a difference. The parking is a screw job. This is the second time I had to drop someone off. You get the first 30 minutes free. I walked them into the hospital and back to my car. Both times i had to pay. Scanned the ticket inside the hospital before going to the parking garage and it showed free. Scanned at the exit gate and forced to pay. Screw job. Absolutely horrific experience at the ER. Thought I had a ruptured hernia for the staff to run a pregnancy test in my blood work I did not consent to, after telling them I'm not pregnant. The nurses were incredibly unkind and inexperienced, speaking in a rude tone and telling me I have Afib due to being nervous. Don't make false diagnoses without knowing a patient's medical history, news flash, it causes immense stress. I understand there are staffing issues, but this is health care and taking care of people with compassion should come first. Both arms are in pain and bruised from unnecessary blood work. read more

I went to Emerson emergency because urgent care said I needed to go to a hospital. I had a kidney , bladder and UTI after passing a stone. I got into a room in about 10 mins and I had an amazing PA who took my urine immediately and sent me for cat scan and treated and diagnosed me in no time. I thank God every day for her because it hurt so bad to urinate and it was all blood. And the spasms were out of control. I originally went to urgent care and they sent me to the hospital with my labs and I chose Emerson because they are fabulous there. This PA name is S. Lamont. Thank you so much for taking such good care of me and prescribing me a dynamite antibiotic. You are a fabulous Dr and I will never forget you. Don't go their ER. You will not get quality nursing care. Cold, disinterested and they don't respond to questions and requests. In house pharmacy will not get you prescribed medicine while you wait in ER room, and rooms in ER don't have paper towels for the sink. I pray you go elsewhere. read more

I tried to get an appointment with a doctor here but they were seeing people out 4 months. So I settled for a PA. She struck me as having the idea in her head of what she was going to do before she even walked in. I don't think she heard me at all... and I felt her rushed recommendation was based on financial goals. I decided I would go through with the procedure and called to ask a few questions. My gosh the woman who answered at the department was rude and didn't know what she was talking about. At first she told me one thing, then she told me another and after a lot of nonsense I still didn't know what their requirements were... then it hit me.. she didn't either. I realized... this was not a place I wanted any medical work done... we have a choice in Boston for the best care and it isn't here. read more

Always have had good care when admitted. In the other hand, my friend went to the ER with a persistent cough years ago, and by the end of the day and two injections of dalaudid, he stopped breathing and was put in a coma, where he stayed after being transferred to Brigham ICU for one month!!!! Who gives someone in respiratory distress, a heavy duty narcotic, twice because his back hurt????? Couldn't take him out of the coma safely for one month. Had to learn to talk, walk, use the toilet all over again. Feeding tube and breathing tube. Lost 40lbs, brain damage, heart failure and stage 3 kidney failure. I blame the injections and always will. read more
