Just went through a long Relationship with Emerson, I had a procedure that took about 4-5 months from start to finish so there were lots of visits here to Emerson. It was a very nice location, ample parking (yet some not free), nice staff. From what I was told the Kitchen was decent ( I didnt eat during my stay). Labor and delivery great! BILLING NIGHTMARE CAUSING OUR SONS WELL CHILD VISITS TO BE DENIED. Do yourself a favor, unless you want months of phone calls where you talk in circles, go elsewhere. So sad because labor and delivery doctors and nurses were AMAZING. Have been fighting to have this fixed since JULY. My account would have gone to collections, but my primary care is holding it out of courtesy for me because I'M NOT THE ONLY PERSON IN THEIR PRACTICE THIS HAS HAPPENED TO. Since Covid has taken over, I will say that after a seizure the Emergency Room was a complete and utter joke. So many nurses not wearing masks, so many without gloves. Watch out for extra tests run by the lab at Emerson. My doctor ordered routine lab tests done at Emerson as part of my annual physical, including several that were only supposed to be done "if medically necessary" according to the instructions to Emerson lab. The lab did nothing to confirm whether these tests were necessary, and ran them on me without my knowledge or permission. I only found out these extra tests were run when I received a bill for them. I alerted the hospital and they were supremely unconcerned. They simply demanded I pay the bill (unsurprisingly, these tests were pricy!). Either they didn't read my doctor's very clear note relating to these lab tests, or they ignored it in the interest of running more tests to make more money. Either way, it's highly concerning. I don't know if it's malpractice, but it sure seems malpractice-adjacent. Go to another lab if you can -- I know I will in the future. read more

Emerson hospital has been terrible in my own and my family's experience. In January 2020 of my uncles was discharged while delirious into freezing weather without shoes. The hospital is next to Rt. 2. He could have died. Early this week my other uncle was admitted to Emerson Hospital because he didn't feel well. They gave him a penicillin based antibiotic when though his chart clearly starts he has a penicillin allergy. The hospital's negligence caused him to go into cardiac arrest for a full two minutes, leading to resuscitation methods that broke several of his ribs. I will never trust Emerson Hospital with the care of any of my family members again. read more

In December my 4 year-old granddaughter bit her tongue badly when she slipped climbing into bed. She dropped like a mill stone and although I was sitting right next to her I was unable to grab her before her chin hit the night stand. We all know tongues can bleed; hers was no exception and she let us & the neighborhood know it. Her two Grammies flew, no make that stumbled, into action: Old dog towel-check, popsicle in the mouth-check, jacket-check, carseat-check, nearest ER - Emerson Hospital. On the way there I'm thinking that we are most certainly going to be sent to triage hell to make way for more pressing injuries like, I dunno, shark-attacks? gun shot wounds? train wrecks? while we sit with none of the comforts of home with a wailing small person and strangers watching us like a freak show exhibit. To make matters worse, my granddaughter HATES to open her mouth for professionals. She has a lovely dentist whom she sees every 6 months. Each visit ends with the receptionist telling me, "Why don't we give her another 6 months to see if she'll open her mouth after she has a little more time to mature? How's next August?" As soon as we walked through the automatic double doors at Emerson, the receptionist heard my granddaughter crying she waved us right over to her station and began taking our information. She was friendly and patient and didn't give me a bad time about any of the questions I couldn't answer off the top of my head. Meantime - cue the Hallelujia Chorus - she sent for a social worker whose job it is to provide emotional support for injured children and their families. Whoa! How cool is that? The social worker was there within minutes with a gift bag in her hand. She squatted down to our little one's level to introduce herself and to let her know that she was in a safe place where people were going to take good care of her. She also let her know that her Grammies would stay with her the whole time. (Wow!) She walked us all down to an examination room where we waited for a doctor and we got to by-pass the waiting room altogether. Besides a few very welcome distractions - a mini Mr Potato Head, a Cinderella toy cell phone, some play dough - the gift bag contained some helpful information for caregivers about supporting young children "in trauma" (see pics). After about 10 minutes a doctor came in to look at her tongue. The little darling had stopped crying and was playing nicely with the toys & having a cuddle. And she happily complied when the doctor asked her to open her mouth for an exam. It almost brought tears to my eyes. read more

On February 6th the 2024 I slipped and fell on black ice and split my head open. I was taking my ambulance to Emerson hospital where I sat in a bed in the hallway for a few hours which I understood the place was busy. Have to getting a CAT scan they came back and said that I probably had a good concussion. At that particular point I started vomiting unbelievably for a good hour. I kept asking for something to drink and was getting yelled at that I had to wait. I don't think I was being overly bothersome but that remains to be seen. At around midnight they came in brought me in and put a couple of Staples in my head at that particular time I was so dizzy and shaky and then they came in and gave me discharges and let me drive home. I had sent a complaint to the hospital website and I got a phone call back from a man named Rory a patient advocate. He left me a message, I called him back and asked me to call me back the next day which was actually the day that at&t. I'm not surprised at all this hospital is a total dump I would never go there if I had my choice and I totally recommend the people go elsewhere out of this hospital read more

Do not go to the emergency room at Emerson Hospital unless you want to be denied help. A few years ago I was triaged by a nurse in the waiting room at the e/r at Emerson for what I knew was a rupturing ovarian cyst. I explained I've experienced them before. His response "When my daughters feel that kind of pain, I tell them to go home and lie down. You should do the same". After asking this "highly qualified nurse" if he was diagnosing me as simply having menstrual cramps and suggesting that I should not seek a proper diagnosis from a doctor to rule out ovarian torsion, ectopic pregnancy, or an appendicitis, this "highly qualified nurse" changed his tune. Once I was finally allowed to see a doctor by this "highly qualified nurse", it was determined that indeed a cyst on my ovary had most likely burst as there was a pooling of fluid found around my ovary. read more

My mother was admitted after a fall and declining health. Our family decided to withdraw aggressive measures and go with comfort care only. We felt her death was imminent and had hoped she would receive end of life care at Emerson. We had the most insensitive Case Manager telling us we had to discharge our unconscious mother back to her assisted living facility because Medicare rules could not allow her to receive end of life care in the hospital if the expected death was longer than 2 days. We struggled to hastily align hospice services and equipment. My mother was literally shoved in an ambulance ride for 45 minutes and transferred to a hospital bed in her apartment in an unresponsive state with no dignity or compassion. She died slightly over 24 hours later having been kicked to the curb by Emerson. A street dog would have been treated kinder an animal shelter. read more

I am really grateful to Emerson Hospital. I came into the E.R. with potential heart issues; I was immediately given an EKG, was taken into a room within minutes, and had blood drawn and an echocardiogram performed to help fill in the full picture of what was going on. I was attended to by many wonderful nurses and techs in between conversations with the emergency physician. The doctor was in conversation with one of Emerson's cardiologists the whole time, and I found it very comforting knowing that I had access to not just one doctor's insights in assessing whether or not I was in danger, but two. I am also extremely grateful that they discharged me that night with the understanding that Emerson's cardiologists would make time to see me the very next day; they did, and I was able to schedule a whole roster of tests to further figure out what's going on with my heart. Thank you to everyone at Emerson who treated me with such kindness and urgency, it really set my mind at ease and made me glad that I chose this hospital over the others within driving distance during a scary time! read more

I was sent here for my 20 week ultrasound. My whole family came for this happy occasion. Mid ultrasound, the technician up and left the room with my belly out and gel all over the place claiming she'd be right back. After 15 minutes waiting I'm paged on an intercom and told that I need to as my family to leave and pick up the phone, talk to the person on the other end then leave. Stunned and confused I did as I was told, my midwife was on the line absolutely shocked that I was left there alone high and dry; then my midwife, as gently as she could informed me that my baby was dead and I had to have an induced stillbirth. Absolutely no Emerson staff said anything to me. I was left alone in the room. No one checked me out nothing. They completely deserted me and refused to even inform me of true most crushing news I've ever been dealt in my entire life. Even my midwife called the technician a chicken shit. So horrible. I have been waiting a few months in extreme discomfort for a procedure to rule out cancer polyps etc. They are now trying to wait a month to reschedule it and I have already waited out several months for this. I have to work through this so why can't they? I dont mind cancelling my own plans to reaccomodate theres for next month. But I have been sitting in discomfort and nothing has worked to alleviate They don't seem to care about treating patients in discomfort. It is going to cost more for them when symptoms progress and my condition continues to deteriorate. How careless. read more

I had a horrible experience with the staff here that almost turned deadly. Upon having a migraine for a week, I visited the ER here, only to describe my symptoms to the attending and have her tell me - I kid you not - "What the hell do you want ME to do about it?" I was put on fluids by a nurse with that same attitude and sent home. Flash forward a couple of days...my migraine wasn't gone and I was having numbness on my right side. The ER staff continued to give me fluids and send me home. It wasn't until I got my PCP involved that they actually did tests on me to see what was going on. And even then, with attitude. I remember overhearing a nurse in the MRI department call me a "drama queen" and a "deadbeat" because I was living with my parents at the time. What was wrong with me, you ask? I was having a stroke. I'm pretty sure that if my regular doctor hadn't pushed the Emerson staff to actually DO something, I would be dead now. read more

Understaffed Emergency Department. Maybe not a bad place to go if you're obviously bleeding to death. But if it is after hours and your primary care doc has said "go to the ER" in order to cover him or herself, the waiting times can be absurdly long, e.g., 6 hours to get a test that takes 5 minutes. A better alternative is Newton-Wellesley Hospital, which posts its ER waiting times right on its home page. If you think about it, it makes sense to hire as few doctors as possible. The hospital gets paid the same no matter how long you wait. If the ER can be run with just one doctor, that doctor can keep the folks who come in on ambulances alive. If and only if the doc runs out of critical cases, he or she can finally see the "merely sick" patients who've been waiting 4, 6, or 8 hours. We're tried the Emerson ER twice and would only go back if we didn't think we'd live long enough to make it to Newton-Wellesley, Mt. Auburn (has a FastTrack program for the reasonably well), or some other hospital that is more patient-oriented. read more

So, where so I begin? I absolutely love Emerson hospital. I am currently getting ready for a surgery and have to get an EKG done and lab work done. I can't remember the woman that did the EKG, she had blonde hair, I want to say her name might have been Rebecca, same as mine, but she was so laid a back, humble, compassionate happy, and amazing customer service. I also met Sarah the PA. And she was amazing! Everyone that works there are so sweet too. Keep up the great work. ! 5 stars all the way. The only bad thing I could say, would be...... please, please, figure out the parking garage, I dont know why we are paying so much if we are patient and need to park. Hospital staff is completely incompetent, service is terrible and to get anyone to respond is a waste of time. I told my husband and family member never ever bring me to Emerson. Just awful service. I think this is where the worse doctors cone to practice cause they cannot get into top hospitals. BTW the hospital didn't due their due diligence and cost my parents $14,000 out of pocket to send my father to a rehab. Had the case worker, Lois Angelo knew her job, the cost could have been waived. All she had to do was call my dad's primary care to get waiver. Once this was brought to her attention, she never apologized and hospital never contacted our family. This hospital was so reckless and I do believe their non chalant attitude contributed to my father's death. read more

Three strikes and we are out... About eleven years ago, I went in after waking in excruciating pain. At first I thought I was having an asthma attack but the pain was so severe I thought maybe a heart attack. Well, after a quick EKG in the ER, they told me to drink some Mylanta and go home. This was June. December 4th of that same year, I had to have emergency abdominal surgery in the Dominican Republic, to save my life. Apparently an ectopic cyst or pregnancy burst and I was in complete advanced peritonitis. I had to waddle around the DR hospital with my gut wide open, being repacked daily, since the infection was so bad. I almost died. Fast forward about 5 years. My kid is in excruciating pain. He's a college student, so we think maybe stress or appendix....not sure. Emerson keeps him for days on a morphine drip. The female surgeon came in and told us that in her 20+ years, she hadn't seen a case such as this. Well, thank god we transferred to Mass General. He had a case of H-Pylore+ and it was very painful. They had him on meds and off of morphine in no time. We did all of the follow up care there and were very relieved. Now this past week. My husband goes to the ER, as he has had a mild heart attack already and is struggling with his blood pressure and pulse. We did see some good doctors and some pleasant nurses, but the majority- not so sweet. The nurse care manager was wonderful and very helpful. I will say that. The food on the menu seemed like a good variety, but in essence was horrendous and not even appetizing. This was just an overall bomb of a hospital and I will never go here again. If you need stitches, no problem. If you have any serious condition or need real help, go somewhere else. It's like a joke that they are as busy as they are. read more

First impressions of this hospital I've never been I recently moved out west of Boston if I ever had to go to the hospital the doctors always been in the major cities mostly Cambridge however I need to take a trip to Emerson and let me start by saying there was four people in the waiting room of the ER and it took one hour and 32 minutes before we got into a room it was approximately two hours after we got our wristband after we checked in before we were seen by doctors.. Very frustrating in the waiting room was tested positive for the flu couldn't stay awake very sick two hours in the waiting room is totally unacceptable however once we got into a bed the nurses and the doctors were extremely professional and very caring read more

I went to the Emerson Emergency room because my back was spasming so badly that I literally couldn't stand up and was in severe pain. It was a busy day (with people in much tougher shape than me, I fully admit), and eventually the treatment rooms were full and I wound up on my gurney in the hallway. But after six hours and several tests, I was home and feeling better, and have felt better since. ...Until yesterday, when i received a bill from the ER physician, Dr. James, Goudie, for over $700. It seems that he's a sort of freelancer in the ER department, and as such, not under the agreement with Fallon, my health care provider. So while Fallon paid him the $220 or therabouts that was their agreed-upon rate, he is billing me for the rest of the $1,000 he seems to think he's owed. This is called "balance billing", and while it's illegal in many states, it is not in Massachusetts. Who in their right mind - let alone in pain - would first ask if everyone in the ER was under the same insurance plan BEFORE getting treatment? And wouldn't you expect someone to flag the fact that a "freelancer" might be attending to you upon intake...or mention something when they came around (while I was in the hallway) to collect the $100 co-pay? So beware. Your pain relief might only last to your next mail delivery. Fallon isn't happy about this matter, but we'll see how it plays out; I fear I may get stuck with some/all of the tab. We had a wonderful and compassionate ER doctor Monday night while my mother in law was diagnosed with pneumonia at 90. They let us take her home which is what she wanted and she passed peacefully this morning. She has been quite ill for 4 years. Depending on when you go to the ER - it can be kind of crazy if it's full but they do the best they can. Overall - it is a really good hospital. I have been there for 3 surgeries and my kids for 3 more and also 2 for my husband ... as well as 7-8 ER visits over 30 years with the 3 kids. I don't like to generalize- but some of the new younger nurses in the ER seemed a tad inexperienced and less than compassionate. One crashed a stretcher into the stretcher holding my super frail mother in law with no apology. It is tight in there --but at least say "sorry about that!". The two blonde ladies ( one with long hair and one with curly hair) at the 2 desks were both super kind and helpful - too bad they're not nurses! As far as the lady who called ahead for a wheelchair-- it's not a restaurant and they don't always have the staff for that type of service. They usually let you leave your car for 15- 20 min in one of the spots and grab a wheelchair at the door to use. read more

Took my wife here recently when she was suffering from unbearable pain in her jaw. The place was dirty and there were homeless people in the waiting room. We had to wait on a gurney in the hallway because there was no space available. They gave us some medicine (which we already had at home) and told us to go to an oral surgeon the next day, which was the wrong diagnosis. If you are unconscious or barely breathing this place is a good option, otherwise drive into Boston for emergency medical care. The admitting person was very efficient, however. read more

I visited Emerson during the initial stage of my pregnancy. I have never seen such a disorganized hospital and billing staff ever. I was charged for so many unnecessary things and I was fine for that too. The problem comes, when you see bills with 3-4 different billing organizations(or names). When I called Emerson and asked how can I get bills from different organizations when I only visited Emerson, their explanation is ultrasound is billed by the separate organization, Ultrasound is read by the different professional who sends bills by different organization etc etc... and they are not responsible for that bills. How will I know whom to call and where to make payments for those bills. I moved to the different address and I wanted to make sure I get my bills to correct address, so I called Emerson to ask my bills and paid them over the phone. Next day I called to just make sure all the bills paid off, they say I still owe money and told me the same exact service and date for which I already made payment before a day. Accounts department people never let you talk, they just keep talking and hang up the phone on the customers. They never send email confirmations after the payment is made. Make yourself a favor and don't fall into the loop of endless bills and arrogant account department. Its worth an extra hour of drive to mass general or any other hospital, than dealing with all these arrogant people. read more

I recently had two surgeries at Emerson hospital. One in Nov. 2018, the other Mar. 2019. I cannot say one negative thing about Emerson hospital. All of the staff was fantastic! Hands down the best hospital I have ever been in. They take care of you and treat-you right. They also have the best surgeon, Dr. Laura Doyon. Dr. Doyon is the reason I went to Emerson hospital. Absolutely the most caring doctor I have ever met. Dr. Doyon & Emerson are fantastic. I would recommend them to family and friends. When someone near and dear to me woke me up on a Saturday morning and told me he had hurt his knee, I was not looking forward to taking him to the ER. I called a few places, including an urgent care center nearby, and they all said the wait would be a few hours. Emerson Hospital, however, was kind, and the woman whispered into the phone in a smiling voice that there was no one there! When we got there 30 min later, we went straight into the registration area, and then into the exam room. We never once sat down in the waiting room. I loved that the reception woman WALKED US BACK! The nurse and doctor only took 5 minutes of waiting each to come check him out. We were out of there in just an hour and 15 minutes! So why only 4 stars? Well I was kinda bummed that with all that work, the visit from the doctor, etc, we walked out (he hobbled out on crutches, rather), without a diagnosis. He is supposed to follow up with ortho next week. It sucks that they wouldn't run the test (for insurance reasons, she said), but at least he was an idea of what's going on. Next time I need an urgent-care/ER-type of thing, I will try calling Emerson to check on the wait time. It was a very pleasant experience overall. read more

My mom had a fall at her nursing home & was rushed to this ER for a head injury - I met her at the hospital. She had a 3 inch head laceration, broken nose, dislocated finger, and possible broken ribs. Though verbal and mobile, she has severe dementia so she has no comprehension skills. If I had not been there, this would've been a very dangerous hospital experience for her, as she had no idea where she was or what was going on, and the care received was minimal at best. The ER doctor I spoke with understood her condition & that treatment needed to be handled carefully and quickly because she wasn't cognitively aware enough to cooperate. After that treatment plan discussion, I sat in an ER room with her, covered in her own blood, for an hour and fifteen minutes without so much as a check in by the nurses. I had to restrain her to the bed myself, as she kept trying to get up (again, she couldn't understand what was going on). I had to hold the compress to her bleeding nose, as there was no nurse in sight. I had to adjust her neck brace myself, as she kept removing it or chewing on it, as there was no nurse in sight. It was only when the neck brace lodged in her mouth and she started choking, that my screams for help were answered and someone came in to assist her. Once the first doctor came back into the room, everything improved. He quickly reset her finger & applied glue to close the laceration on her forehead. Then he told the nurses to administer Tylenol for the pain and assured me that they would assist her with a bedpan, as mom kept yelling that she needed to use the bathroom. The nurses walked out the room with him and we never saw any of them again. Three hours later and despite my multiple urgent requests at the nurses station, she still had not received Tylenol or a bed pan. When the ambulance arrived to transport her back to the nursing home, the EMTs and I agreed that at this point the best thing was probably to get her back to the nursing home so that they could tend to her needs. It was only once she was back at the nursing home that she was cleaned up of all the blood, administered Tylenol, and had her dirty diaper changed. Oh - and the feedback I got from the nursing home this morning was that all the chest monitor stickers they had placed on her at the ER were still on her last night. One still had a wire attached. They removed all of them when they cleaned her up. As far as I'm concerned, I witnessed elder neglect in the ER last night. Patients beware. read more

Don't let a nurse anywhere give your family member Distilled water to drink. Like drinking salt water, instead of the body taking in the water to replenish itself, when you swallow distilled water, the water from the body will go into the stomach or intestines to dilute the salt or distilled water. That will give you terrible diarrhea. My mother had a feeding tube inserted in her stomach . They gave her distilled water. They were just trying to be helpful and didn't know. She had diarrhea bad enough for two days that she needed a bag or two of salene in her arm. read more

I had my baby here and had a pretty good experience. One nurse did say that she wouldn't feed my baby if she was in the nursery though. I thought that was pretty crazy. What if you're showering or stand the baby is hungry? The ER is adequate, but there is one nasty nurse there that can't put in an IV and has an attitude problem. read more

If I could give this hospital 0 stars I would. The care they provide to those with mental health issues on their behavioral unit is unacceptable. Even with disclosures signed, there is little to no communication with outside providers or families. ONE day after discharge the person is in crisis and is brought to the Emergency Room and admitted, only to sit there for THREE days with NO care. When asked about the length of time in the ER the patients family was told that the behavioral floor was closed because of COVID and DPH was investigating. How can Emerson Hospital admit a person knowing they do not have the resources to care for them? Their treatment of people with mental health issues is disgraceful! read more

Emerson used to be a great little community hospital - 30 years ago. I wouldn't take my dog here now. The hospitalist changes every shift and basically everything starts over again. They don't seem to know the patient history or have access to the results of medical tests or the opinions of the numerous doctors who have weighed in before them. Medical errors and lackadaisical attitude to patient welfare prevail. A recent stay here by my elderly mother can only be described as a living hell. They gave her medicine they shouldn't have, which they said was a medical error; the hospitalist admitted to not reading her chart before speaking to us about her care; and then they discharged her with the wrong insulin dosages. This hospital should be shut down. read more
