This place has a lot of goodwill because of the sign and past vets who have worked here, but after going here for over a decade, I'm switching vets. It cost me $564 to have them do two exams on my two cats, one set of shots, and flea medication. This is much higher than any vet I've used in the area. On top of that, this bill is after fending off constant upselling on the part of the vet. She couldn't tell me what was wrong with my elderly cat because, despite a $90+ exam, she needed to do a full panel of blood work to even guess why the cat is acting a little low-energy (he's 17 years old). Despite being unable to diagnose anything with my cat, she suggested I get him a monthly shot that "some people" feel helps elderly animals with arthritis. When she told me that, I watched her write $170 on my chart, as if she was calculating how much money she could get from these shots every month. Also, she said she couldn't tell for sure if the cat has arthritis or not. Likewise, when she learned my younger cat's vaccines were out of date, she told me she would have to start the whole thing over and that I would have to take the cat in AGAIN in 6 weeks for boosters. When I pushed back on this, she dropped it and gave the cat his shots. This isn't the first time she has done this. When my cat had an abscess in the past, she used it as an excuse to send me home with bags of medications, bandages, a cat collar... all for a fairly routine and not serious injury. It truly feels like a car salesman trying to add expensive seat warmers or stereo upgrades I don't want. It makes it so I can't trust anything she says. I was also shamed by this woman. She scolded me repeatedly for letting vaccines lapse and not coming to see her sooner, even though the last few years have been really hard on my family (unemployment, deaths in the family etc) and bringing healthy cats into the vet wasn't a priority. Here I was trying to catch up on the lapse and I was told how negligent I am as a pet owner. She also discovered one of my cats had a flea and acted like it was the most disgusting thing she'd ever seen and told me *three times* how I was going to have to clean my whole house. She was in the middle of telling my how quickly fleas breed before I asked her to please stop. It was way over the top and felt designed to make me feel like a filthy person because the cat had a flea. This is ironic because the office is feeling really dingy these days. There was also a toxic atmosphere between this vet and her underlings, and they passive-aggressively bickered in front of me. The assistant also gripped my cat in such an uncomfortable, harsh way during the exam that I intervened and told her I would hold the cat instead. It wasn't hurting the cat, but it was intrusive and was adding stress to an already upsetting situation for the animal. Overall I think this is a vet to avoid. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS--AN ABSOLUTE JOKE!!!! I came in last week to get my dog his rabies shot but had to get him a checkup too according to their policy. $150 later I was out the door (would have been more but I declined several other vaccines they tried to push on me). However, in order to get my dog's license renewed, the city is asking me for additional info on the rabies vaccine. I've emailed PVH 3 times and have yet to get a response!!!!!! Additionally, on our latest visit the facility seemed very dirty and smelly. Perhaps if the staff spent less time on trying to come up with clever sayings for their sign out front and more time cleaning and providing better customer service they wouldn't be losing patients. I only went to this vet because 3 other vets (which were recommended to me) were not taking new patients at the time I got my first dog. When I went online to book my most recent apt there were numerous times available on each day of the week. The parking lot is always empty too. This speaks volumes and if they were that good of a vet they should be booked and more patients should be seen coming and going. There are many choices for vets in Petaluma alone. Don't waste your time going to this filthy facility and inadequate staff who cannot respond back to simple emails from patients even after 3 attempts to reach someone. I will gladly be taking my business elsewhere! read more

Impersonal and very chaotic exam room. I went for routine care for my two cats. We sat in the exam room which seemed wedged between two larger rooms. There were metal, clanging and slamming doors on all sides. It was loud and alarming. Thankfully my cats were able to cling to my lap and I could be some source of calm for them. The whole experience felt cold and unfriendly. The vet herself was kind and had the most warmth out of everyone. Every other employee I interacted with was sullen, and preoccupied. I will not be going back. When I questioned the receptionist about the breakdown of my bill she seemed irate. Fortunately I did, as there was an overcharge I noticed right away. These "pets" are my "fur babies" and as a customer in your establishment, I expected more. read more

I had been going to my previous vet for many many years and was hesitant to change vets, but did so since my daughter started to work as a vet tech assistant here. My 10-year old kitty had been losing weight and we weren't sure what was wrong. All of the doctor's consulted with each other, ran the tests they needed to and although it took time, we found out what was wrong and he is on the mend with a new diet going forward. I can't think the doctor's, but especially Dr. Smith enough for all of her caring and saving me where she could, especially because I was in between jobs. She is knowledgeable, loves the animals and the families she works with and really goes above and beyond. Brought my sick kitty her last year... they fit me in on a Saturday, which was awesome. Thought maybe just a UTI, but unfortunately a few days later, at the emergency clinic we realized she was blocked and needed surgery. Petaluma Vet Hospital would have performed the surgery, and even tried to get the costs down for me (the vet was so very kind to me), but after having spent thousands at the emergency clinic and my poor kitty being 15 and the surgery may not fixing the problem, I decided to put her down to not put her through any more pain. I'm so sorry to deliver a negative review. I want to believe the staff here is well-educated and well-meaning, and I did find the receptionist very nice, if harried. Perhaps the clinic is just too busy for its capacity. But they were sloppy with their diagnoses, treatment, and billing, unneccessarily putting my cat at risk, and costing me $10, 000 more than I should have spent. They mistreated my cat's kidney infection, then almost performed a life-threatening surgery to remove the kidney. Instead they hospitalized her in their clinic for a week, only to have the problem return three times. It took another emergency for Dr. Smith to tell me to take the cat to a specialist in internal medicine. The responsible thing would have been to tell me this as soon as the infection returned--I had no idea there were such specialists for animals, or when to consult one. This is like your GP not telling you to go to the urologist when they find a kidney stone. The other confounding thing is that the vets at PVH never told me that there are standard and well-known protocols for treating cats with kidney failure. The number one protocol is for the owner to deliver daily subcutaneous fluids for life. The second is to add a supplement to their food which binds with the protein. These are not new protocols, and they were very effective with my cat. Had I started on these at their first diagnosis of kidney failure, she might never have had a second life-threatening emergency and (very expensive) hospitalization. The final straw was that after they referred me to the emergency hospital and specialist, they never once called to see if their patient was dead or alive. Perhaps they are better with dogs. read more

I don't know about anyone else, but I still read Yelp reviews! And I still like writing them (very) occasionally when I think someone deserves a shout out. This vet clinic deserves a shout out, for sure. They are a busy place, so getting in as a new client might take awhile- I'd say get on the list. Not only are they super friendly, they have a sense of humor and seem to really love what they do. When you get into the exam room, the first thing they do is actually *greet* your animal, making sure they are comfy and at ease. Our dog got a big cuddle from both the vet and the tech, and when we went in with cats, they were allowed to inspect the whole room at their leisure before any poking or prodding. We have never felt hurried here, despite the fact that they are popular and busy. Dr Christensen is funny and warm and takes the time to send emails or print out articles for us that she knows will be helpful. The front desk staff is also kind and friendly. Remy woke up Friday with a severe ear infection, the outer ear was red, and the canal swollen. He was in distress, The staff always remember Remy and immediately understood the urgency of his infection. Dr Smith created an opening for him, her 5th extra patient, on a Friday!! Not going again. So disappointed in the way my dog's heart medication was handled. There was a delay in getting it because a receptionist made a mistake, and after I was told I could pick the medicine up today, was told when I arrived that i could not. Only my dog's heart at stake, I guess that's no big deal to this vet office :/ In response to the office's response, I had to find a new vet so my dog could get the care he needed, which is why I've haven't contacted the office since. Also, contrary to your description of the event, I'd already confirmed the dosage etc. I was told I'd be able to pick the medication up before the office closed (I'd confirmed on the phone what time it would close), and when I came in I was told I couldn't pick it up that day. read more

I have a small black lab mix, 38 pounds. I took her in as she was limping considerably. The vet took Lily's wrist in her hand, and above the elbow, in order to twist her front leg as she suspected that it was the elbow causing the limping. Lily yelped loudly, and it was as if the vet had never EVER experienced an animal reacting in this way to pain. She literally THREW HER BODY BACKWARDS, BOTH HANDS UP IN THE AIR OVER HER HEAD, SLAMMING HER BACK INTO THE CABINETS BEHIND HER. EVERYTHING IN ALL THE CABINETS RATTLED AND SHOOK LOUDLY. There were upper cabinets with glass doors and I told my husband upon returning home it was like she was trying out for a movie role or something with a VERY DRAMATIC SCRIPT. I'm not without empathy and would expect for a vet to get their hands and self out of the way as you never know which animal might snap or bite . I told myself not to storm out at this ridiculous unprofessional behavior as I didn't know her story. Maybe she just found out she's sick or her marriage is over or.......you never know what someone else is going through. However, the histrionic's she demonstrated made me not trust her, at all. I gave 3 stars as she seemed well educated and ordered an X-ray as well as blood work and provided good information regarding anti inflammatory medications. I don't need a hysterical Veterinarian, Lily my sweet dog doesn't need it, on top of her being in and yelping from pain. Even the vet tech in the room seemed shocked at the reaction, eyes widening and ever so slightly shaking her head in reaction to the scene the vet caused. read more

We ended up here after our regular vet took an extended vacation. We needed a set of vaccinations to board her the following week. I called and they fit us in that day. The cost of the visit & vaccines were less expensive than the pet store low cost clinic. They were so nice and understanding, as my shepherd was very scared. Our last vet just held her down and got the job done without showing any care or concern. This place was great. We are so happy to have found them. I am very cautious about who I would trust to care for my animals. Dr. T and Dr. Smith have been a blessing to me and my fur children. I feel secure and confident making decisions for my cat and dogs with the knowledge and guidance provided by these wonderful doctors and their staff. Earlier this year my border collie mix tore a ligament in her knee. The doctors gave me options for her repair and gave me an array of information to be able to make the most informed, sound decision for my dog. Before and after the procedure was done, they were there for every question and concern I had for her recovery. My dog is back at 100% function and happier than ever. The vet techs, front dest receptionists and both doctors know my animals and myself by name, always are friendly and helpful and treat me as though I'm a friend. I couldn't ask for a better vet. I have been taking my Rottie here since she was 11 weeks old, she is now 9. Our dog has had her share of issues from ear infections to major surgery. I have to take her in every three weeks to get her nails done & they treat her with kindness, even coming up with a plan to make her visit less stressful. One tech gives her "cookies" & Cara trims away. Today ended up not being a routine nail trim. She ended up having what we thought was a seizure while we were leaving. They all stopped what they were doing & Dr. Smith rushed her in to do a full check up on her. The staff kept apologizing to the couple people waiting for their appointments, everyone understood. Sitting, waiting, not knowing what was going, I got nothing but hugs & people checking in on me. The couple people waiting, truly understood & offered kind words. After what seemed liked forever & after Dr. Smith had Dr. T look over everything as well & they didn't see anything that could have caused it. This day was not going well, very anxious for my pup's health when I noticed what I thought might be infected glands, I had called 5 other local Petaluma Vet Hospitals before I called these folks. They insisted on a more expensive doctor check up to bulk up the appointment fee and refused to do it otherwise. While this may be because they have inexperienced Techs (this is a very simple procedure), I was confused as I was used to Berkeley Vet hospitals that were available for immediate appointments when needed and happy to serve you and a pet in need. I actually do not care about the cost when it comes to her, she's my baby and her Vet appointments generally run $600+ (she's accident prone) so I was prepared for anything - but the notion that this was necessary for a dog who was up to date in everything and healthy in every other way was silly, it's absolutely not necessary in a procedure of this type and only delays getting her out of her misery. Happy Ending: To the rescue came Meagan and Dr. Dekleva at Adobe Pet Hospital. They were kind, professional, thoughtful and took a moment to allow me to express my concerns and then scheduled an appointment with their Urgent Care that day - incredibly kind of her and the team there! They did not charge me extra for a "wellness" checkup and we were in and out of there in 20 minutes with a prescription! We will be going back every 3 weeks for follow up appointments and they have gained a loyal customer that will pay many more times than the one-time appointment. As I suspected, my dog did need immediate care and I'm so glad I didn't wait for an appointment or agree to an unnecessary doctor checkup. read more

I don't ever post reviews, but I really wanted to leave a good review for Dr. Kristensen and everyone else at PVT! I take my Shiba Inu Jude here who is more important to me than the world, and Dr. Kristensen has been so so helpful with all his funky issues and just really above and beyond. She is very communicative over email when I'm freaking out and sending her questions and puts my mind at ease. Jude has been struggling with some depression and anxiety this past year which was very upsetting for me and Dr. Kristensen showed a lot of concern and empathy and helped us through the journey of getting him feeling better. Now it seems Jude is struggling with some maybe thyroid (or possibly something else) issues and again everyone here has been kind and helpful even though it is clear they are very very busy. So I just wanted to take the time to say how appreciative I am of everyone at Petaluma Veterinary Hospital!! Thank you so so much for taking care of Jude it means everything to us!! read more

I just changed to this veterinarian hospital for my pet care for a few reasons. First, my vet of many years sold the practice and I continued to go there but noticed some things I wasn't happy with. So I changed my puppy Gracie to having a checkup and vaccination to there at Pet vet Hospital! I love the staff !! And Dr Cantrell was so efficient and most of all intuitive!! My Gracie was happy there, she was handled with love! So she is my new vet! read more

My dog's foster mother from a local rescue group recommended Dr. Smith when I adopted my first dog in 2012. Everything is always top notch. They have the best customer service. They gave me a estimate on blood work and x-rays that would cost me $700. The check up alone was $61. I ended up spending 150 and left with no real answers. They fit us in right away and were really straightforward on our options, their recommendations, and the costs associated with each. They ran some basic tests and worked with us on a strategy to get our dog back to health without a bunch of unnecessary costs. They also called and checked on her almost every day. If you are looking for a bubbly chatty vet, this is not the place for you. However if you are looking for careful competence, thoughtful examinations, and direct answers to your questions... Look no further. The vets and staff really care about the animals and take good care of us. Do I sometimes overhear bits about the employees social lives? Yeah, so? It wasn't while my pet was being served and it did not affect the professionalism and the quality of service we received. Our medical doctor even asked Dr Smith to do a strep swab on our dog to protect an autoimmune compromised member of our family. She hadn't heard if this being done before but was happy to help. They follow up with a phone call after non-routine visits and I appreciate that type of caring and professionalism. We are loyal customers. Update: November 2016 This week, I had the pleasure of taking our cat in for a visit with the newest member of the veterinary team, Dr. Cantrell. She is a wonderful addition to the team and you really can't go wrong with any of the 3 vets! Dr. Cantrell listened to our concerns, gave a thorough examination and worked with us to optimize care for our kitty and our family in light of the needs autoimmune compromised member of our family. I had an emergency situation with an 11 week old Lab puppy choking on his lunch. I literally ran into Petaluma Vet Hosp as I lived nearby and Dr Smith immediately helped my puppy in distress then had her vet tech Cristina personally drive her with my puppy to VCA in Rohnert Park. With her immediate help, personal care getting him to acute care, she truly saved my puppy who has now fully recovered. They followed up the next day by calling me to check on how my puppy was doing.
