My shoes were chewed on by puppy. He asked me to pay $20. He did a terrible job on the straps. He cut half of the strap off and I told him it didn't match the other shoe and he should've just cut the whole thing off and it was a terrible job. He told me that it doesn't look bad and to put them on the floor and I wouldn't notice the difference. He told me to go the next day and he'll fix it. He fixed the straps on both sides but the stitching looks like shit. "No one" is going to examine my shoes closely, but I still paid money for a shoe "expert" to repair them. I took in 5 pairs of boots/mules to get new heel caps and soles. Emilio also repainted the heel on a pair of black boots where the color was peeling off. First of all, only a two day turn around! They are so quick with everything. Also an incredibly reasonable price. Cost me $110 for the 5 pairs of shoes (cash only but they have an ATM if you need it). The shoes are good as new now! Emilio happily services your tired worn soles in a non-descript shop shared with a jewelry seller (who may be related to him) and he also does watch repair and sells winter accessories. Like any shoe place, it smells of fresh polish and is cluttered with year's worth of shoe supplies, in progress projects, and ephemera. I've used Emilio twice, both for heel replacements. My husband dropped off two pairs of dress shoes for re-soling and polish. For heels, replacing the stiletto pad is $7. A full sole replacement on men's shoes is $38, but includes a full polish and all the coloring work to make sure the new soles look like a proper match. We're satisfied with the work (but we're also not talking about super expensive shoes or high end work). Its cheaper than getting the work done in Midtown or going to buy another pair of shoes. That said, Emilio is open on weekdays from about 7 am to about 5 pm. It's not terribly convenient hours, but if its on your way, its not a bad deal. I would advise taking a picture of your shoes before giving them to Emilio - both times I've gone its taken Emilio more than 5 minutes to find the shoes. So I bought my wife a purse. The "leather" straps of said purse fell apart after less than a year of normal use. I took it upon myself to find a place to get it fixed [because I feared for my life if I didn't]. Now, the first time I found myself at Emilio's, I was saddened to find out that they are closed on the weekends. I bought a pair of relatively inexpensive boots online that I absolutely adored. Of course the downside of buying cheap boots, is they sometimes fall apart. Within the second wear, the heel came off. Being as obsessed with them as I was, I kept wearing them despite one missing. In the process I completely wore down one heel. When I brought them into Emilio's, with the chunk of heel, he immediately threw out the piece that had come off, let me know it was garbage, and that what he would give me was "not garbage." $15 later and VERY quickly, he not only replace the heels on BOTH boots, but completely filled in the the 1/2 inch of heel that was missing. A quality cobbler. Emilio's full of zingers and one-liners that can catch you off guard, but he seems to love what he does and always had a smile. His longtime customers also seem to be friendly, which just makes the experience so much better. The world would be a better place if more stores operated with good vibes like this, but I can understand that sometimes its asking too much from people who carry a lot of unrelated personal baggage into the workplace. Vibes and feel-good talk aside, I brought some shoes in to resole and he did a good job with 24hr turnaround. Really disappointed in their work. Ended up punching a metal pin through the sole of my loafer into where my big toe would be--had to go back to get them to fix that. Honestly not even sure what they were attempting with that. They also polished my shoes without asking--a seemingly nice gesture. However, the natural chromexcel leather should not have been polished using brown cream/wax, ruining both its look and feel. Had they simply asked if I wanted it when I arrived I would have said no. *Update I took my shoes to Bloomingdales, where Jim's Shoe repair works out of and the receptionist and cobbler, Lenny, were horrified when they saw these shoes. Jim's is going to be completely refinishing both pairs by removed the painted on mess that Emilio's Shoe Repair put. All in all this costing me $135 dollars to fix something this shop caused. Please do not go here for expert work. --------- Horrible experience. I brought two pairs of brand new Frye shoes to the man to polish and instead he applied a paint on both pairs of shoes. After a single day of wearing each pair of shoes they started to crack and flake off. Do not trust his work. Go to a professional. Don't come here to repair your watch. I got a battery replacement here. I could not adjust the time right after the replacement so I asked him to look at it again. When he reopened the watch, it had dirt lodged in it from him previously repairing shoes. He got upset and threw my new battery away. He denied responsibility, did not apologize, did not refund my money. Now my watch is broken. The exterior is scratched, there is debris inside and the rubber washer inside no longer fits. read more

You ever walk into your crazy Russian uncle's living room when he's buying used (stolen?) watches off of someone by the handful and ask him if he can resole your shoes? Well if you have then you'll know exactly what going into Emillio's is like - i kid you not someone one was selling a HANDFUL of watches when i walked in. That said, it's a great spot for quick and inexpensive repairs from shoes to handbags and watches. The work is not super high-end (don't bring your $1000 Minola Blonics here) but for the basic heel/sole repair, he's quick and fair. I have also had a watch-band replaced and a zipper replaced - however don't expect to have it your way - this is not McDonalds. As he's cutting off and preparing my calf-skin leather loafers (soft and supple is the key) me - "oh plastic soles, i'd like leather for those" Emillio (russian accent "no ptaschtik es bet-her" me - "yeah well i like the give of the natural soles for comfort even if they don't last as long" Emillio - "no you like this - last for two years" *gluing the plastic sole on* read more

1) I take a watch in to have the battery replaced. The swarthy Russian man (Emilio?) tells me he doesn't have the right tools but that he should be able to do it, anyway. I come back later and the watch is working, but there is a significant gouge where he's dug out the back of the casing. Okay fine - guess they're not very careful with watches and jewlery. Maybe they're better with shoes? 2) I take a pair of leather boots in for a quick polish. I tell him I don't want them blacked because I want to keep the distressed look - only a clear polish. I come back later and he hands me my now glossy, patent leather, Fred Astaire-worthy combat boots. Fine - I guess I wasn't specific enough with my request. 3) I take a messenger bag in to have the magnetic clasps and worn velcro strips replaced. He tells me that since this will require him to take out the lining it will cost some money. $20, he says. It's a little more than I want to spend on this bag but I've done a little stitching myself and I know that lining can be a pain so I agree on the price. I come back later to find that he has only replaced one of the magnetic clasps and has done none of the reinforcing that he promised ("it didn't need it"). He has also replaced only the velcro hooks; worthless, since it was the loops that were worn out. He originally quoted me $20 because he was going to have to take the bag apart, but he never even touched the lining. If the one magnetic clasp cost him $4 (a generous estimate) and the velcro piece $1 (also generous, since it's cut from a roll), then that's 15 bucks for about 3-5 minutes of labor. I asked him if he would go down on the price, since the bag "didn't need" the labor he had originally quoted as necessary. He refused and started yelling at me "you don't think this is worth $20?! You think i don't know what my work is worth?! Who are you?!" I gave him his $20 just to get out of there. Don't take your stuff here. read more

I only had one experience here, but I got the heels of my boots replaced and 2 months later both heel thingies have completely loosened and are about to fall off. Super quick turnaround and can't beat the price - I paid $25 for new soles on a pair of women's boots. I came in on a Wednesday and asked to pick up on Friday, it was no problem. The shoes look better than when I first bought them, and hopefully these soles will last longer than the originals. Location is close to the train so I can stop in on my way to work. Hi neighbors! Yesterday, I dropped off 6 pairs of shoes - 4 boots and 2 heels. Emilio gave me a very reasonable quote to repair the tips or heels and polish. I just picked them up and his work was fantastic - I'm really hard on my shoes--pair that with not getting them fixed as often as I should, and the rubber had worn off 2 of my favorite boots and the base of the heel was starting to be scrapped away by rough wear. Emilio took true care and applied craftsmanship in repairing this wear and minimizing it's appearance. He also made a set of keys for me quickly -- two birds with one stone! Brought a broken heel to be fixed and Emilio did it at the moment, no waiting time, can't get better than that. I am definitely coming back.

The basics: I brought 2 pairs of boots and 2 pairs of shoes here, all of which I've had for years and had worn down to the point of being unwearable. I thought I only needed new taps, but Emilio pointed out some damaged areas and convinced me to replace the soles on both pairs of boots. When I picked up my things, not only were the repairs great, but he'd polished and glossed all of the ugly toe and heel scuffs, making each pair look almost as good as new. The price was fair, considering the work was beyond what I'd expected to have done. The pluses: There is a sweet Russian lady in the shop (maybe his wife?) who does tailoring and repairs. So I dropped off one of my favorite pairs of pants, which I hadn't worn in years because it needed a repair (rear seam) no one else would attempt. "No problem, I fix," she said. Two days later, she showed me where she had reinforced and reconstructed the seam. $7 to salvage a beloved piece? Bargain! I also picked up a vintage sterling silver bracelet for way less than its weight as scrap, from those among the case of interesting but mostly crappy estate jewelry in the shop. Fun if you like a "find," as I do. The bottom line: Don't come here for high end, impeccable service. Do come for reasonably priced repairs, quick turnaround and a quirky one-stop Mom 'n' Pop feel. read more

What a sloppy low-quality hack. I called to see if #1 they use Vibram soles and #2 they could do heels while I waited. I was told "yes" to both. I waited and waited and waited and waited while he did a bunch of other things like change watch batteries at the same time. Finally, I looked over to see my soles off, replaced with some down-market "Ultra"-brand soles. Ultra is not Vibram! Ultra is harder and lower quality by far. The heels of the shoes (which are made by APC) are deep brown, and this guy polished them much lighter brown. I am so annoyed by people like this who don't have enough respect for their trade to do it properly. Now i'll have to pay someone else to fix his sloppy work. Shame on this guy. Don't go to this place. He'll just mess up your stuff. read more

He didn't even have to replace the entire zipper. He only had to put the closure part back on which I had. He cut an end off to do it and did a horrific job putting it back together. On my way to work on Tuesday, I took my watch for a new battery. "Emilio" (not sure that's his real name) was unable to close the watch after placing the battery in. I asked to try and he got upset and responded, "I've been doing this for years . . . etc." He said he knew a guy with the right tool he needed and asked me to leave it and pick it up the next day. On Wednesday I return with my ticket and after realizing he didn't even know what he was looking for, I reminded him of what it is exactly, to which he replied, "Oh, I just had the guy pick it up. Can you come again tomorrow afternoon." That would have been Thursday. I returned on Friday, to . . . wait for it . . . again, "Oh, the guy just left with it." Naturally, by then I was feeling not only inconvenienced, but dismayed and worried, as I'd been told the same thing twice with the same poor result." So, I asked if he could call the guy and have him return with the watch since he "just left." Here it got more intriguing: the woman who does sewing chimed in, "He can't call him. He's on the subway," at the same time that "Emilio" proclaimed, "The is the guy is Jewish and today is Shabbat." I looked at the time and saw it was only 3 p.m. Moreover, the conflicting responses led me to declare that I just needed to get my watch back. He got angry and yelled that he didn't need my watch and so on, as if that were my concern or implication. While my watch is not the most expensive in the world, it's a gift from my wife, so the value is more than about money. I will try once more either next Monday or Tuesday, but whether or not my watch is returned in working order, the ordeal of simply trying to get my battery replaced at the shop and the lack of apparent concern with customer service (to date, there has not been even an apology for the inconvenience to me) have led me to write this review to warn others off and to determine never to given any of my business, no matter how small to this shop again. It seems a facility working with the arrogance that comes with being the only game in town, so to speak. read more
