Once again, I have failed to take before/after photos of my shoes to show off how well Michael repaired them. I have a pair of leather sandals I bought in Italy from a street vendor in 2014. I wore them so much that the rubber soles began peeling away only a few years into owning them, and I've kept them in my shoe closet for maybe about 9 years since. I finally decided to look into getting them repaired. Michael had done such a wonderful job with replacing my worn-out nomasei moccasin soles, that I came back to see if he could revive my sandals. The new soles he put on have more traction and are much better quality than the original soles, and I'm thrilled to that my shoes that I'm quite sentimental about can be worn again. Slow and difficult service. Would not come back here for watch repair. I dropped off three watches to get battery replacements and we confirmed a pickup day a few days out but they said I'd get a call when ready. No call and when I showed up they were ready but one of the bands was not connected to the watch and only one guy could fix so I had to come back. Said I'd get a call when ready but I did not. Then i realized light wasn't working on one of my fixed watches. Dropped that off when i picked up the last watch. To pick up the third watch again was told I'd get a call but did not. Waited a week and came back and he said maybe I didn't know what button to press for the light which still wasn't working as usual. Said I'd need to buy a new one they couldn't fix light. That's fine but don't tell me it's bc I don't know how to use my own watch. read more

This shop is like a catch all. I went to replace 3 watch batteries on a Saturday afternoon and quickly realized that they also repair zippers, fix shoes and other quirky things. Business was brisk during the 15 minutes it took to replace my batteries and assist a few other customers in the process. I've been coming here for shoe repair for 2 years now. The job is always well done. When Uggs came back in style I brought in an old pair that was in a closet for years. He cleaned them up so they are wearable. I also brought in 2 heels to be repaired and scuffs cleaned. He was honest for one pair that was pleather (aka plastic) and said it wasn't fixable. I have a pair of Prada boots that had a broken zipper. I took them to Saks (where I bought them) and they couldn't help me. I mailed them back to Prada, after 4 months I got them back, still broken. I took them to Michael's, in two weeks he had fixed them as good as new. He matched the zipper and replaced it. They have been fine ever since. They were $1,200 boots. The Prada and Saks could have cared less but Michael's fixes them for under $30. read more

In the past I've had a great experience here but recently brought in three pairs of shoes with scuffed toes and the returned them to me basically looking the same. I paid $118 and my shoes do not look any better than when I dropped them if. They told me they couldn't fix them without dying the entire shoe even though they had previously done this exact thing on one of these pairs of shoes. I brought them to Michael and he added about 3 inches of leather to them so they could fit around my calves. They look good as new and the turnaround time was great too. Moving to a new neighborhood, the first question is always: where's a good cobbler? I buy expensive shoes and I want them to last. Sadly I'm a stomper who somehow ruins shoes in like three months of continuous wear. Cut to Michael's. Not only did the shop not disappoint but also damn my shoes look good as new. The shoes in question were a pair of Marni sandals with a peeling sole; they now look perfect. Like I could head over to the real real and they wouldn't know the difference. I was especially nervous about my Louboutins but it turned out perfect, and at a much lower price than what some cobblers on Wall Street were quoting. I had a watch battery replaced. Michael was fast and reasonably priced. He also reassured me that my watch didn't need repair.

Brought in a pair of sneakers with suede trim for cleaning. They assured me they could handle it and set the price at $30. When I picked up the shoes they were just as dirty and discolored as when I'd left them. Their excuse was "we did the best we could." Reluctantly, upon urging, they knocked $10 off the price, but they shouldn't have charged anything since the shoes look exactly the same. Would not recommend. read more

Great prices and convenient location. I dropped off a pair of shoes here that needed a zipper replaced. A younger man assisted me, although he wasn't very friendly just straight to the point. No big deal because he got the job done. Only issue was that they never called when my shoes were fixed and ready. Had I not taken it upon myself to just go in there randomly, they would have gotten rid of them after 30 days and it had been almost 3 weeks since I dropped them off. What a magician! Brought in a wayyyyy too small pair of designer boots from a sample sale. He was not sure he could stretch them but after a few visits he somehow got them to fit!! He also did an amazing job with some resoling and made my favorite old loafers look like new! I've had my Filson Uplanders for years. I wear them for work year round. These boots have been abused. I recently got the heel caught on a door that slammed behind me and the heel on the left boot came apart from the stitching. I thought I'd need to buy a new pair. Because these where very expensive hand made boots I figured I'd bring them to Michaels without a lot of hope that he'd be able to fix them. A week later I got back what can only be described as brand new broken in boots. He hand stitched new soles on them, oiled them, and gave me a free tin of mink oil. This place does very good work. When I get new shoes, I take them here for caps and have then weatherproofed. When they're all worn out, I take them back for rehabilitation. I've taken Michael shoes that I was just embarrassed about -- they were in such sorry shape. But they always come back nearly good as new. Ignore the couple bad reviews below. Don't know where they came from, but this place is the best cobbler I've ever been two on two coasts. I usually take very pair of non-athletic shoes I buy to a cobbler, to get a thin layer of rubber over the sole and taps, so that they'll never have to be resoled and can always be repaired. (We spend good money on our shoes!) Michael does an _amazing_ job with this, making sure that the additions are the right thickness and color so as not to be noticeable at all, and not to affect the shape and look of the shoe. Then he very carefully grinds down the edges, and, if necessary, shaves the surface of original sole so that the rubber can sit without being noticeable. I never worry when I take shoes here, and I'm always impressed by how much care they take to get it right. read more

I hoofed it all the way from Fort Greene to check this place out, dropped off a pair of heels for rubber soles, a pair of vintage oxfords for heel repair and soles, and a pair of boots to be stretched. The work was good, ready on time, and the staff were friendly (the guy at the counter gave me compliments on two of the three pairs, natch), but -- and this is an issue with the Yelp reviews more than with Michael's -- it was not as cheap as described by others posting here. I paid $88. I don't mind paying for good work and it was all good. But maybe they've wised up or something, because it was not cheaper than any other quality place, so heads up. read more

Here's my tale of woe: I took a pair of workboots here to have the sole replaced. I selected a black wedge sole base with a Vibram lugged sole (outsole). They charged me $120 (this is, coincidentally, what the boots cost me to begin with). It was steep, but I love the boots and wanted to support a local business, so I swallowed my pride (and better judgment) and paid: $70 upfront and the rest when I picked them up a few days later. A thing about the boots: they are Goodyear welted; however, when they were returned to me, the sole was merely glued on. I realized this when, a few days later, it started to flap off. I returned and they fixed it for free, which I'd expect. Then several months later the glue must have started coming off again because now both soles started to come loose. I fixed it for $4 in Super Glue. At this point I'd rather buy new boots than return to Michael's. read more

I love these guys - the only reason I'm not giving it five stars yet is because I've only been once. But they brought back a pair of my beloved black leather boots from the dead and made them look practically new. They also did a very nice job on another pair. I paid a bit more for both repairs than I have at other places, but the work has never been this good, and it was still a sight cheaper than buying new boots. What can I say. Michael really knows what he's doing. Brought a couple of pairs of shoes that needed to be resoled and new heels. When I came to pick them up, at first I thought he gave me the wrong shoes. Then I realized that he did such a great job that they looked brand new. What surprised me the most is that I had my shoes done in a couple of different places. But this guy topped them! He actually sewed the leather soles, To make sure it has a better hold than just glue. And keep its original look. Gave it a nice matte finish on the upper leather... From what I heard he's been in this business for over 20 years. Shows why he's still in business. If you want fast service. Be sure To have your pick up slip handy. I was happy with Michael's for my first two repair jobs, but then I brought in a pair of boots to get taps on the heels. I bought them vintage but they were like new & made with excellent leather. When I picked them up, they'd been storing them folded in half, so now that flawless leather is permanently creased. I'm really sad about it. Such an easily avoidable bit of carelessness, and from a shop that should have known better. One of the worst customer service experiences I have had. Was specific in my request. Less than 1/4 of the requested job was done. Very disappointing, very sad I will never recommend this place or go here again. If you want 10% of something done for 100% of the cost, absolutely, check them out. I come here all the time whenever I buy a new pair of kicks. The service here is very quick no matter how many pairs of shoes you give them and the prices are incredibly cheap! I once dropped off 5 pairs of shoes for different repairs needed, I got them all back 4 days later and it only cost me $12!!! I mean, some of these shoes were just done in the "good looking" department but these guys just looked at them and said "ok, see you in 4 days." 4 days later, perfection!
