UPDATE: All of my issues have been resolved. Happy to report Tom Emmett Sr was prompt and communicative in issuing me a refund and returning my old cart in good condition after I complained. I am happy with the final outcome. -- original review -- I really don't like going out of my way to write negative reviews. I support small, local businesses and would much prefer to shop from them than big-box stores or corporations. However, I do feel a responsibility to warn other people after the experience I had with Emmett Golf Cars. I bought a very cute used Western golf cart from them on 9/9 for $6k, plus taxes and fees. It didn't seem like the best deal for a used cart, but Tom Emmett Junior assured me it was in great condition and that they'd done a lot of work to refurbish it. There was some corrosion on the batteries and when I asked Tom about it, he said it was fine. We also asked if our previous cart, a very cute, 2-seat Rolls Royce Western converted into a 4-seater, could be traded toward the purchase of our new cart. Because its batteries were dead, Tom Jr said it was basically worthless -- "a chop job, maybe worth $300 to $500." I took him at his word and let them take our dead cart when they delivered the new Western we purchased from them. Within a week, my wife and I started noticing the new Western was not as refurbished as Tom Jr made it seem. The headlights shut off in the middle of a night ride and the stereo is on its last legs. It doesn't go as fast as they advertised in the original ad and now I'm thinking the batteries are very unlikely to make it the "five or six seasons" Tom Jr assured us. I was going to call and mention all this to them. That's when I saw they listed our old cart for $5.5k -- barely a week after they told us it was worthless! I called them and expressed I was very upset that they misled us in this way. I told them they could make it right by either giving our old cart back or reimbursing us for the things we need to fix on the new cart. If we couldn't resolve the situation, I would feel obligated to write a negative review. Tom Jr accused me of extortion and Tom Sr threatened legal action. In my opinion, misleading customers and threatening them when they bring up valid concerns is no way to run a business. I did everything I could to try to resolve this situation, even letting Tom Jr and Sr read this review in advance of me posting it. But, at the end of the day, they don't have to do anything. I signed a contract for my new cart, I let them take my old cart away, and I am left to deal with the consequences. My advice: if you decide to buy a cart from Emmett Golf Cars, make sure you have an objective third party inspect it first. Verify it is actually in the condition they say it is. I'm lucky that I can afford to overspend on a cart with issues and fix it up, but I would hate for someone on a budget to be misled in this way. I paid a premium for my cart thinking I was buying it from legitimate business people. Instead, I got a Craigslist experience and a very expensive lesson in not getting swept up. Relationships, personal and professional, can be tricky. Judge Smails said it best: "It's easy to grin, when your ship has come in, and you've got the stock market beat. But the man worthwhile, is a man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat." So when problems arose with the golf cart I bought from these guys I called them and let them know. First-- they remembered who I was right away. Probably due to my four year old daughter who drives a hard bargain. She really ground these guys down. They had no chance. No one does. Anyway, they asked what the problem was. I told them. They sent someone out that day to fix it. Problem solved, right? Nope. The "Elegante" still wasn't running right. So next time I was out visiting dad I drove down to their shop. On a Saturday. This time I had my little assistant with me. Boy did she let them have it. To their credit they didn't flinch and apologized profusely. And there was someone at my dad's door that day to fix the problem. That, my friends, is called service. I hope our cart runs perfect now. Pretty sure we isolated the problem. However, I'm confident if there is an issue these guys (a father and son team) stand by their word. That's pretty rare these days. Relationships prove their metal through good times and bad. Metal is tested through adversity. Through adversity comes strength. Emailed them to inquire on selling them my older model 4 seater golf cart, since it seems like that's what they sell mostly: preowned older model golf cars. Was also interested in a possible trade in plus cash for a newer model. So they stood to not only buy my old, but sell me a new one. When it came down to it, their offer was egregiously low on my trade in. They basically offered less than 25% of what it's clear they'd turn around and sell it for: $1,000 for a golf cart that they'd sell for $4-5K (I deduced this by reviewing the pricing on their current inventory). Just the batteries cost $1,000 brand new, and mine are 2 years old (all lead acid batteries have date codes so they can verify). My cart is a street legal 4 seater, so even JUST the cart with no batteries at all is worth well over $1,000. Now, I understand that they are a retailer and need to make money on a resale, but maybe I incorrectly assumed they wouldn't be trying to make 4-5x on their money. Seems excessive. I saw on here another rating where they told a lady her old cart was worth almost nothing, took it for free, and then put it up for sale for $5.5K a week later. This was after she bought another cart from them. Gross. I see a pattern here... I was polite though and told who I assume was the son that I'd just opt to sell it private, as my neighbor just sold and older model 2 seat cart for $3K. I was told: Good luck with that. I told him that he knew his offer was super low, which it was. Yeah they have some cool carts, and yes their pricing is a little high on some preowned models, but let's acknowledge that they are doing some refurbishment and that of course they need to make a profit as a brick and mortar retailer with high overhead. Bottom line: If you're going to inquire about selling them a used cart, know what you have, know your battery code dates, and know what you can sell that same exact cart for 'as-is' privately. At the end of the day, it's not worth it for me to sell them a cart for $1,000 when I can easily sell it for $3-3.5K on my own. I would have been more than happy to let them sell the very same cart for $4.5K or more had they given me a more fair offer (again, look at their inventory and pricing). Not only that, but I was willing to make an $8,000 purchase with them too on a brand new cart! Anyways, I was called a 'putz' by the owner's very professional son and that ended the conversation. Had he chosen to be professional, this review would have never been written. But now I want to warn others. They will not ever get my business, I will never recommend them to anyone, and depending on what I'm sure will be a response filled with vitriol or blame shifting, I might even go out of my way to let others at my golf club know to avoid these guys. read more

I moved to Indio, Ca to retire at a golf course community, so I needed (wanted a golf cart). Look at both new and used and fell in love with an old Western that Emmett Golfcars had. Besides the price on the paper on the windshield, it stated that all the batteries were 2016(which meant that I had one or two years before needing new ones). Checked it out and noted that the bolts for the windshield needed to be replaces and that the back tail gate needed work. Emmett said both would be fix when delivered. Was a little shocked when the said the give no warranties. Should have stopped there, but the said the had been in business for a long time and always took care of their customers. Yes they (father and son) were good "used car salesmen) in all the bad ways. After having it delivered, I was having trouble getting the batteries to keep a charge for 18 holes. Emmett said it just needed a couple of days of full charging. When that did not work, I took the time to inspect all the batteries (8 -6 volt batteries) and call the battery company to find out their code as to the year they were made. FOUND OUT THAT 3 OF THE 8 BATTERIES WERE OLDER THAN 2016!!!!! Called them and they tried to tell me that they never said the batteries were 2016. (I saw the sign, my brother say the sign, and verbally the day of purchase, they confirmed the age) The said they would make it right or take back the cart and give me my money back. They lied and basically said "no harm/no foul" and acted like it is all in a days work. Finally we decided that they would give me a good price on all new batteries. I asked them when they did that, if they could do some work that I would like to have done on the cart (my choice). They said yes and that they would also give me a good price on the work. I did tell them we were leaving for our summer home and they said they could keep the cart until we got back in October. I then got the invoice by e-mail to approve for the work. I was a little shocked that the never said anything about a pick up charge of $165, but at this time I just wanted this done and be over it. The other prices were good. The said in the final bill they would give me a discount. When they were finished and I was at my summer home, I got the final invoice by e-mail. The labor charge went up $75, they charged me $450 for three months storage (which they knew was necessary when they picked it up) but the did give me a $525 discount. Interestingly, the discount was equal to the increase in labor and the storage fee. REALLY A DISCOUNT???? I like patronizing local owned business. I had rented a one-way uhaul and that was my drop off location. When I was leaving, Tom Jr. asked me if I ever rent again to please go through him as he gets a commission. Sure, no problem. I also asked if I could recycle/leave my empty wardrobe boxes and other clean used boxes as other locations have a 'free used box' bin'. Tom said no problem, he could 'resale' them. I thought that that was weird to tell me, but he came off as naive more than greedy. I'm finalizing my move from LA to LQ and I call Tom Jr. to find me a Uhaul. His price was less than if I would have gone online myself. Great deal and I will drop off at their location even though it is 20+ miles out of my way. This morning, I was surprised to see a $25 charge to my credit card from Emmett Golfcars! I spoke with Tom Jr. and he said his Dad checked in the Uhaul and said it was filthy. I asked him to send the pictures he said his dad had taken of the unswept Uhaul. Immediately Tom Jr. said, 'Have a nice day, Trisha' and hung up on me. I guess times are pretty hard. The only reason I'm giving this out one star is because the gentleman called me back within a timely matter. I believe I was talking to the father on the phone. When I walked into the store which is just a garage in an alleyway there was a guy making a video for his YouTube channel on a golf cart. He did not greet me when I walked up to him to ask him about a cart I called about, he just drove off on the cart he was videoing. He came back a few minutes later and drove right back into the garage. He knew I was there but didn't come out to greet me. I walked in and he was not very friendly. I would ask questions and he would give me a smart Alec responses. I asked him if the carts were street legal, and his response was he's not the DMV. Well you should know that information if you're selling carts. The carts are old and dated but some do have cool features. I saw the one that I wanted, but the way he was acting and the way he was treating me I walked out. As I was driving home I saw another store which I walked into and they treated me with respect. They showed me around and gave me different options. I purchased a cart, and even though I went a little more than I budgeted for. I know I made the right decision. I used this company's u-haul services twice in the last 12 days because it is so close to my own business and I will never use them again. The biggest issue I have is the fact that the charged my card more than their own invoice total was, and then when I asked why my bank statement has a charge for $50 more than the final invoice, they said they "didnt do it". When I offered my bank statement to show where they were paid, they said it must be a bank error, not their problem! I am filing a claim with Visa to get a refund of the money they "didnt" charge me. In addition, we had picked up the first truck we used with 5/16th of a tank of gas in it. 2 blocks from the return we stopped and put $20 of gas in the truck. They said that only brought the tank up to 1/4 not 5/16th, so we took the truck down and put another $20 in it. The needle didnt move at all. So we put another $10 of gas in it, (I am up to $50 bucks now) and the needle jumped from 1/4 to over 1/2 a tank. When we returned with the truck, and explained what happened, once again it was not their problem. They charged a $385 deposit for a local rental and when I questioned why it was so high, he (Tom Jr again) told me that that was UHauls policy and that he "had no choice". Finally, they had us drop off the truck after hours in an open and unsecured location. We were charged for usage of the moving blankets. I explained that we didnt use them, but said that I understood that they had to charge me and that I was HAPPY to pay the $15 fee. There are many homeless in this area (by a truck stop) and maybe someone used them to keep warm. His response was that "No one would have a reason to do that." I was not arguing the fee, I said I was happy to pay it. I told him that I had no reason to lie to him that I didnt use the packing blankets, but I could see that he was choosing not to believe me. I asked him why I would lie to him when I am not disputing the charge and would pay it, and he hung up on me! Obviously, this company has no concern at all over how their customers feel about the level of service received. read more

Worst customer service in the Desert. I reserved a U-Haul truck (online) for 2pm, this past Sunday. I was called at 1pm (by Emmett Golfcarts) and told I was an hour late to pick up the truck. I said "I'd come now, I'm only 5 minutes away." Emmett told me they wouldn't wait (very nastily) but that they move my reservation to another location. I called back to find out where they moved me, since they didn't tell me and I didn't think to ask at the moment. No answer to my call. So here I am without a truck and things that had to be moved today (Sunday - I had 2 helpers only available on that day). So I went to the U-Haul location, I usually go to and was told Emmett cancelled my reservation, so they created a new one for me but I had to drive another 6 miles to get it. Make a long story short because of Emmett's unprofessionalism, rudeness and disrespect I had to drive all over town to get a truck. To make matters worse I called back today (the next day) to discuss the matter with the manager at Emmett and was met with the same disrespect as on Sunday and was hung up on. I have lodged a complaint with U-Haul and give Emmett my lowest recommendation. Incidentally, I am looking for a place to have my golf cart regularly serviced and will definitely not consider Emmett Golf Carts. read more

I had the worst experience in returning a rented UHaul to this location! I rented the truck in LA and returned it at this location. The owner, Tom Emmett, was very discourteous and disrespectful to me for no reasons. He claimed that the truck was dirty and yelled at me to clean it up or he would charge me a $49 clean up charge. When I went to clean up the truck, and it took me one minute to do it since the truck was not dirty in the first place, he yelled at me for sweeping the little dirt down to his yard. Note that his yard as a parking lot is on a dirt area. His exact words to me was: "damm it, don't sweep it down to my road..." This is no way to talk to a customer, or anyone else for that matter. This guy has issues and I simply don't know why he targets me. If Haul continues to do business with this guy as an authorized dealer, I would never use UHaul again.
