I got there they were ready. The man on the phone and in person was very pleasant. Order was perfectly placed with no errors. When I asked for "pink" sauce, (which at a lot of places are sooooo cheap about -idk why.) he threw a bunch in. The empanadas were perfect! Cooked great, hot, and flavorful. My rating may seem harsh but whenever I am reviewing a meal I often cook at home I am slightly more critical. Why? Because when I go out to eat I expect that when someone owns a restaurant they do it bigger and better than a working class mom cooking it up in her own kitchen. I make empanadas all the time, all different kinds too. After seeing the yelp reviews I wanted to check this place out. I brought my son with me because he also loves empanadas. We heard that this place is small and frequently busy so we arrived just before 12 trying to be ahead of the lunch rush. There was only one couple dining inside. We ordered four empanadas which included Chicken cornflour, Pork cornflour, Beef white flour, and Turkey and cheese white flour. We were provided with three green sauce containers in our bag and everything was packed well and clearly displayed which type was inside the package. Although there was hardly anyone there it still took about fifteen minutes to get our order ready. If the fillings are premade and they are using a deep fryer at the appropriate temperature it doesn't take more than a few minutes to fill and fry an empanada so I am really not sure what took so long. I'd really hate to return when the place is actually busy. I wonder how long the wait would be then. The empanadas themselves were on the small side in my opinion. I am used to the cornflour ones being smaller but the whiteflour ones can be stretched a bit to pack in extra filling. When I make them at home they are almost two times this size. While I understand it's not as profitable for them to add extra filling I would definitely be willing to pay a little more to get a decent sized empanada. They do have wide variety of fillings and dough so I'll give them that. The beef empanada was crisp, not greasy, but the meat was a bit dry and underseasoned. It could have used a bit more salt or adobo. The turkey empanada was the juciest of them all but it was supposed to have cheese in it but there was no cheese detected. I was expecting at least a little ooze of cheesy goodness somewhere in the empanada but there was none. Either they forgot or there wasn't enough to get a good taste of it. The chicken corn flour was also pretty good but also a little more on the dry side. We just dumped a bunch of the green sauce on it. The pork was probably my least favorite. The meat inside seemed very tough. I wouldn't order it again. The total came out to $8 for four empanadas. For that price I could easily make 10 of them at home and they'd be filled to the brim. In conclusion this place may serve the lunch crowd in the area but definitely wasn't worth driving to for a casual meal. In addition parking in this area was really tough. My review is based on their lack of customer service and common sense. Is unfortunate that based on this encounter I am departing as a customer. Saturday evening (heavy rains) I traveled 50mim by car just to buy some empanadas from this establishment. I sent my mother inside to place the order. She looks at the receipt and realize she made a mistake on the order. To our surprise they refused to change the order even though the empanadas weren't even made yet. Not even a minute had pass from when she paid unbelievable! I asked to speak to a manager or owner and she wasn't there, so I demanded someone call this person over the phone. She was rude and disrespectful at which she elevated my anger for a simple request. She compared her small cafe to a large fast food chain, McDonalds!!!! Lmao- stating that if I placed an order at McDonalds I can't change it! I'm so in disbelief as I have kids and changed my order plenty of times!!!! Ever been to Olive Garden and changed your soup for a salad instead??? YES! The the same at Morton's steak house! The orders weren't even prepared yet! No where in their cafe they had a sign stating this ridiculous policy!!!It's called customer service and clearly they haven't mastered that recipe! Let me start off by saying that I've had empanadas from EVERY type of restaurant, so I know how potentially delicious they can be. I've converted from flour to corn empanadas after eating them here. Holy empanadas, Batman! I came here on the recommendation from Mr Queens himself, Jando S, and he did not disappoint. I ordered around 7 empanadas for myself, almost as a goof bc they were so cheap, and I am glad to have ordered that many bc they were straight off the hook delish. Favorites were the sausage, beef n cheese and breakfast. I enjoyed them so much that every time I was pulled away from the bag of eats, I would take an empanadas to go. Walk to the car? Empanada. What feeling do you get when you discover that empanadas cafe is right by your dentist's office...and you have an appointment at 11? JOY. Now you have an excuse to be in corona around lunchtime. Obviously after the realization and excitement has set in, you jet their right after your visit and order every possible option that involves cheese. SO cheesy and delicious plus I love the fact that it's not your typical white or corn flour empanada ( not that those aren't good because they are). Try any of their grain empanadas and you'll see that it's the perfect little package. Very crisp on the outside but not greasy at all and then when you bite in you get all that goodness inside. Other musts are the spinach and ricotta white flour empanadas since they're all bigger than all the rest, the maduro and cheese and the mozzarella and pesto. There is always at least a 10 minute wait for every order so make sure you know that in advance and also bring cash because they don't take anything else! I'm pretty sure I just had an orgasm in my mouth. My roommate said she just had a fried dough and meat orgy in her mouth. We can agree to disagree, and I know this is borderline food-pornish, but all I know is that everything there was AMAZING. We had one of each pretty much (as you can see from the pictures) and everything was really delicious. The highlights were the beef and the turkey, and the meh ones was the pesto one and the sausage/potato. But it wasn't even meh, it just wasn't as slammin as their meaty counterparts. I am totally not a nutella/fried banana person, but when I put that sweet empanada in my mouth, I almost died, and not from embarassment because I had nutella running down my chin AND MY ROOMMATE DIDN'T WANT TO TELL ME (ahem, kelly!!!), but because that thing was so tasty and perfect. One of my favorite lunch time spots when I manage to have the time to go out for lunch. Empanadas Cafe is a tiny little place, but don't let that fool you! They have wide assortment of empanadas ranging from the usual such as shredded beef empanadas, all the way to delightful nutella and banana empanadas. (Which I MUST have for dessert every single time!) You also have a choice between corn, white and whole wheat flour. I finally got to try this place after bookmarking it for over a year. Why did I wait so long? These Empanadas are shaped in little half moons of joy! I ordered a bunch of them to try with the family and they were all a hit. Out of all of them, I was pretty impressed with the turkey and cheese. Maybe because I wasn't expecting much, but I am glad I tried it. It was well seasoned meat with plenty of flavor. I will be ordering that again for sure. I also liked the beef and cheese and the spinach and ricotta ..... actually, I liked them all!! With all the different varieties, they are marked on the bag and also stamped on the top of the Empanadas itself (not with ink, but an impression) which was pretty cool. Simply the best. The tiniest of places located on a little side street off 108th St. A few blocks from the LIE and close to Flushing Meadows Park. Inside, there are a few bar stools (they do serve the excellent spicy sauce in shot glasses) and 4 tables. So eating inside is a calculated risk. My suggestion is to grab them to go and head over to the park. The service is quick and always with a smile. So onto the food and drink... My favorite flour is the white one. Any of the flavors are good, but the breakfast one is just out of this world. The corn one with the shredded beef filling is my second favorite. But all of them are amazing, you cannot go wrong. We were both equally impressed. Empanadas made FRESH, so they're very hot (be careful) and NOT FROM A WARMING CASE. I got two classics, chicken and cheese. They had corn, wheat and whole wheat based empanadas, for an average of 1.50, not much higher than the usual corner bodega. It's weird in there in the best way possible. This place is dangerous.. it's within walking distance from me. It's a cute little empanada corner shop that offers big flavors packed in savory pastries. You can either white flour, corn flour, wheat flour, or organic. Besides the savory selection of empanadas, they also make desserts! Their green sauce is addicting--try to ask for an extra sauce because it'll be gone even before you finish the first empanada. Corn flour empanadas are $1.25, while the white flour, deep fried ones are $1.5. Organic ones are available, though I've never tried them since I'm not very partial to whole wheat. Love the shredded beef, ham and cheese, and the spinach and ricotta. The sweet plantain and cheese is probably my favorite, the perfect mix of salty and sweet. Each one has a delightfully crunchy, not greasy, crust, and they don't skimp on the filling. These aren't the largest empanadas but three are usually enough for me (though I often order 4 or 5 because I'm a pig). Everything is made fresh to order, so I always purchase a homemade icy to enjoy while I wait. Oh man. I think I am in heaven. These empanadas are fantastic! I never had ones that had such simple and crisp wrapping. The plantain and cheese, tomato and mozzarella, and the ham and cheese were soooo good. Most importantly, each of them are matched with different shells(wrapping?), and I like to personally thank that person for their great choices in taste. :) I am definitely coming back. There were at least 15 people who visited, and space is limited, so you can always pre-order by phone and then take out your meal. Love, love, love, did I say love this place? It's a small place probably seats 3 tables at most. They have a large variety of empanadas. It's on a corner street and very difficult to find parking in the area unless you order to go and chance it by double parking right up front. My favorite empanadas include the mutzarella with Maduro, the mananera which is a breakfast empanada that has eggs, cheese and ham, the Hawaiian, and the different pork types. The chicken and beef are just okay in my opinion. But I guess that's because I am spoiled and I love their other special varieties. You wouldn't find them in any other empanada shop so why not? They use to have a plattern for $50 that came with a huge tray of empanadas. I would order this each year when I hosted New Year's Eve party. You can have them cooked or order frozen any of their empanadas. They will tell you exactly how to cook them should you want to fry them yourself. Years past I would also buy large batches frozen and bring them into work to fry for lunch. It was a great treat for us outside the norm. In one of those trips the lady even have me a free cooler bag to transport my empanadas in. Was very nice of her. I did order more than 60 so she probably felt bad for me carrying all that weight. This was always a snack stop for my ambulance partner and I since he had a crush on one of the girls working there. They were always super friendly and the service is great for such a tiny place. Don't let the size fool you because the taste is tremendous. Being stuffed in there wasn't much of a problem since it made us feel like empanadas in a bag and especially since we always take it to go but I have to say don't go too far or else you'll have cold ones. Therefore, I suggest going during hours where it is less busy! The empanadas are always fresh but I have seen the prices increase as with anything over time. They also are made in different flours: Whole grain, white, and corn. So far I'd have to say that I really enjoy the beef ones and also the spinach and ricotta. Your first bite should be filled with the PERFECT proportion of delicious meat & shell. Before this, I was taking three bites of the corn breading before getting to any meat (I might take tiny bites, but still, you get the point). This place was love at first bite! I love that this place makes their empanadas fresh. It's slightly pricier than your average empanada spot, but totally worth it! Completely worth your extra fifteen cents or so because your empanada is completely filled and with just the right amount of breading (super thin compared to other spots). They use quality ingredients and you can taste the difference. I always get the shredded beef with potatoes and ground beef with cheese. The spinach & ricotta is also really good. I've tried the chicken ones too. You pretty much can't go wrong. I prefer the corn flour over the organic. If you happen to stop by, don't forget to try the homemade ice pops! They're really tasty!
