$1.50 huge, freshly-made empanadas. Hot tip: take a bite and then pour some hot-sauce on the inside. A great-quality street-food deal in Ridgewood.

Latino Bites is a small, no-frills Colombian eatery that's got a straight-forward menu, good service and AMAZING food. I've only had Colombian food a few times and I was happy to try something new - the menu has photos and descriptions for all different options. My friend'a husband is Colombian so she was very familiar with the menu. The Colombian burgers looked out of this world - also they are huge. BOMBASTIC I would say. But we both went with an Arepa each - I had the Chicken Arepa and my friend had the Chorizo Arepa. So so so good!! When the arepa first comes out, it looks small but once you start eating it, you realize the amount of chicken and the sauces on the arepa makes it very substantial and filling. Served with a little bit of salsa and a little lettuce on the side, it was very satisfying. They also have some juices, sodas, and other food options like tacos, pizza and of course, as mentioned, the burgers! Since I tried to "be good," it will have to possibly be a next-time treat! 9/10 spot; so good that they even have a good truck across the street.

The go to here is the Italian sausage and pepers. Fresh, flavorful, and grilled to order. Has a great char and the peppers and onions are all cooked on the spot. My go to is the spicey sausage with onions and peppers with hot sauce and bbq. Nice hero bread that is soft to soak up all the juices and matches well with with the sausage that makes a great meal. Other good items here are the meatball hero or the chicken meatball helo. You can tell it's home made and full of flavor. You can get it either with marinara sauce or the ala vodka sauce. My go to would be the meatball hero with ala vodka hero. Friendly and good service and family owned. It's a great place to get a bite to eat and will be definitely back.

But D'Angelo's on Woodhaven Boulevard isn't trying to pull any of that grand stuff. It's just an old-school sausage rig parked on the side of the road, smelling like sizzled grease and charred peppers that hit ya even before you even get close to the window. I ordered an Italian sausage hero loaded up with peppers and onions. I'm not even kidding, the thing was massive, wrapped in foil like a giant, heavy beautiful brick. The sausage itself had a good, snappy casing and plenty of flavor, and the onions were sweet and greasy in that way that tastes great while you're eating it, but makes you feel kind of depressed about thirty minutes later when you're just sitting around thinking about your life and blew off the gym. The bread was decent a little chewy, but it held the whole sloppy mess together without completely collapsing in your hands. The guy working the window wasn't trying to be your best friend or give you some big phony smile, which I actually appreciated. He just handed over the brown paper bag, took the money, and moved on to the next guy. It's not the kind of meal that makes you want to write a poem, but it fills you up with foodie happiness when you're wandering around feeling miserable and hungry. Three stars is a little low, four might be more appropriate.

The platter comes with perfectly seasoned chicken over rice, along with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. I got the famous white sauce and hot sauce on the side so I could add as much as I wanted, and both took the dish to the next level. The chicken was flavorful, tender, and paired perfectly with the rice. The portion was generous and incredibly filling, making it an excellent value. Everything tasted fresh, and I honestly enjoyed every bite. That said, it was so good I could probably eat two platters! The line was long, but don't let that discourage you it moved steadily and was absolutely worth the wait. Whether you're a local or just visiting NYC, this is one of those iconic spots you have to experience at least once. it!

I don't go as much as I use to, as the price has more than doubled since 2017/18. However, that has nothing to do with my rating. My problem is that meats have gone downhill. I used to love gyro meat - never sure what it was exactly lamb or beef - but now it is just gross and greasy. The chicken which used to be excellent is now very dry. The white sauce is great and the rice is fine, but that is it. Not worth getting anymore. Maybe one of their competitors is better, can't really be worse.

The fuchka was the main event; I liked the original a bit more than the yogurt variety (doi fuchka); the latter was sweet and a little more creamy, while the original had a nice spice and crisp that stood out. I discovered that a Bangladesh street food called fushka is very popular, so decided to try for my first time. Tong is highly rated and their menu is simple. I ordered the Doi Fuchka ($7), which comes as crispy, hollow puri shells stuffed with a savory mashed potato and chickpea mixture. The difference in the doi is that it is topped with a yogurt to balance the spice for a creamier texture. I liked this a lot, especially with the tamarind sauce too (though this got a bit messy). This is nothing like I've ever tasted with so many different textures going on. It hits you with spicy, sweet, savory, crunchy, creamy, chewy and everything all at once. It comes with 8 pieces, which is perfect to share with 2-3 people. Definitely something to check out!

I wandered over to Key Market for a couple of beers and, on the way, spotted this glorious food truck: Chinelos Tacos Birria. With no dinner plan and no clue where else to go, I made a mental note to stop on my way back--and wow, am I glad I did. Total hidden gem! I ordered two shrimp tacos, and they were loaded--plenty of perfectly cooked shrimp, crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, queso fresco, and a touch of cilantro. My only tiny gripe? They used lemons instead of limes. But the flavorful hot sauce totally made up for it. The service? Uber friendly. Seriously, the kind of warm, welcoming energy that makes you feel like a regular even if you're just passing through. As for the ambiance--sure, it's a food truck on a city street, but it's got a cool, laid-back vibe that just works. You can feel the neighborhood rhythm all around you. If you ever find yourself grounded at the Holiday Inn Express Woodside, consider this your silver lining. Everyone gets so impressed by a little paper letter from the city, like an "A" means the guy cooking the meat is a saint or something. This whole food setup, it's about as ridiculous and depressing as anything I've ever seen. First off, you walk up to the blue food truck, and the side of it is completely covered with a giant menu listing every combination of meat, rice, and pitas you could ever imagine. Then you get the food you I orderedin a shouting voice, everyone is shouting, it's a total circus. They hand us our two giant skewers souvlaki sticks, somebody had the brilliant idea to stick big, thick slabs of bread right on top of the skewers like stupid little helmets. So there you are, standing on the sidewalk in dirty Jackson Heights holding two sticks of meat while the counterman in front of you is not exactly smiling, dude looks pissed. We also ordered a big white plate covered in chopped-up chicken, black olives, white sauce. It all smells like char and grease, and it's supposed to be the "best souvlaki" around, but the whole experience just leaves you feeling sort of sad and greasy.
