I have been coming to empire sport west close to 15 years I have been treated with nothing but professionalism and respect. Owning trucks in the construction trade is hard to maintain let alone when I started castle care concrete my workers would thrash the trucks. I can't afford to have any of my trucks down but when they do conk out almost everytime no matter the problem Dave has it done that day even if its 730 pm at night. BEWARE! This business is unscrupulous. They are very disorganized and lose track of what they are doing. When confronted with a mistake they had made, instead of acknowledging it (I did have all of the paperwork to support what had happened and the old battery that was still in my vehicle) Dave tried to make me responsible. Dave (the owner) was awesome! My 2012 VW Jetta needed the ignition housing replaced because the key wouldn't turn and he got it all done by the end of the next day! By the way, no easy task; he removed the entire steering wheel column. He also spent roughly 30 minutes with me on the phone discussing potential problems with my car, educating me, before I even decided to tow my car to Empire Sport West. Overall, great guy, cares about people, the community, and is not just trying to take your money. Absolutely will not overcharge you like the dealership mechanics will. We are not locals and we thought we had a bad battery which turned out to be our alternator. It was recommended to try these guys and what was a very busy day for them and late in the day as well, they put in a new alternator and got us on our way. I have used Dave Proffer since he opened his shop here a couple or so years ago. I have brought my own two cars and my daughter's car as well. All three are out-of-Mfr's-warranties. While I have used Dave for normal regular services, like oil changes, tire rotations, fluids refills, light bulb, fuse, and filter replacements, a host of small adjustments to this and that, and replacements of a variety of parts like light assemblies fore and aft and whatever, he is quite capable of a full brake job and more complicated issues. He'll do most anything including buff out your glazed-over plastic headlight covers. Dave is both knowledgeable and smart. I understand he was a former shop manager of a GM or Chevy dealership...hope I got that right. He knows how to obtain electronic diagnoses, work thru a wicket of steps to rule out non-issues and whittle the possibilities down to the core problem. He just fixed my too-hard-to-turn steering mechanism, figuring out which of the several components needed replacement. So, capable he is. He gets 5 stars for that. I would give him an extra star if I could for honesty, integrity and more than reasonable pricing. Like where do you find that in an auto repair shop? Friendly, candid and even charming...not like slick or oiled, just good ole fashioned likability. So, why have I given his ESW shop only 4 stars for now? He is not yet fully equipped to handle some things like wheel balancing and other procedures I suspect. But, if you want an honest assessment, a competent repair at a more than reasonable price. I recently decided to repair the AC system on my daughter's VW GTI -- which needed new components like the compressor, drier, and expansion valves. I replaced the parts myself, but I first went to Dave, the owner of Empire Sport West, to have him evacuate the system and recycle the used refrigerant, R134a, in an environmentally responsible way. Dave recharged the system after I had swapped in the new for the old components, and then he fully checked the system for leaks -- all was in order and fully functional after his work. I don't regularly write reviews but I am doing it this time because Dave went above and beyond what I asked for with the evacuation and recharging. He provided tips about how to remove some of the parts and what might have been the initial failure in the AC system. His information was spot on. Dave also was extremely kind, patient, and very reasonable in his pricing. He struck me as honest to his core, and he is the type of person we'd all like to have as a mechanic -- very capable and trustworthy. I have found Dave to be honest and fair. He does what he says he is going to do. I have taken 3 cars to him for smog tests. I had front brakes and rotors installed on my suburban in July 2016. About 4 weeks later I got a call from him. He was checking to see if everything working correctly. I am 62 yrs old and have never had a mechanic to that. Today he worked on a faulty starter. for both jobs the price was fair and the work was completely quickly. I will continue to use him and highly recommend him. read more
