I had a consultation here three years ago and prepaid $100 for a 1:1 training session. That same week, my husband passed away. When I told the trainer, he kindly said to come back when I was ready, and that was the last I heard. No expiration notice, no follow-up, nothing for three years. When I finally felt ready to return, the owner immediately framed my options as either using the 1:1 I'd already paid for, or applying $50, half the value, toward a membership. They never communicated an expiration. Three years passed for a reason I had disclosed. Quietly honoring the full $100 toward whatever I wanted was the obvious move, and it would have cost them almost nothing in goodwill terms. Offering half is a choice, and it tells you what kind of operator you're dealing with. A little grace would have gone a long way. The 1:1 itself was a 40-minute form walkthrough, the kind of light intro most gyms offer free as a complimentary first visit. It was framed as a meaningful training session, but the value was limited and only mildly useful in the context of taking their classes afterward. Honestly, it functions more as a safety net for the gym, making sure you can perform the exercises without injuring yourself in their group sessions. I was also handed an "onboarding" bag with a "golden ticket" promo, three free classes for friends to use, with an approximate value of $100. So the gym is willing to extend roughly that much in free value to strangers I bring through the door, but not willing to extend the same goodwill to the grieving customer standing right in front of them. When the owner checked in afterward and I shared honestly that the session underwhelmed me, she didn't ask questions or try to make it right. She got defensive and offered a refund. For the membership only, not the 1:1. The message I took from that exchange was clear: I wasn't wanted as a customer. Maybe others have had great experiences. Mine was a series of small, ungenerous choices in moments where basic human decency would have cost nothing. read more

I have been going to Empowered Fitness for a little over 4 years. Every workout is challenging, but totally scalable to your ability. The trainers are all very knowledgeable and help you to figure out how to make changes based on what works best for you. The trainers are great motivators and every workout is different. I have been going to Empowered Fitness for over 10 years because the workouts and trainers are fantastic. Empowered Fitness is not your average gym. It combines indoor and outdoor workouts in a group class format -- which is a great way to enjoy our beautiful weather and not get bored -- whether the focus is cardio, strength, stretching, or all of the above. Every class has been challenging and different from the last. I really like that the instructors make a genuine effort to get to know each member. When I first joined 5 years ago, I had to modify some exercises while recovering from an injury so I appreciated that they were sensitive to each individual's capabilities and that they emphasized good form and fitness over all else. There are people at all levels of fitness and the environment is supportive as opposed to competitive. This approach enables you to stay motivated and feel good about whatever extent to which you can safely push yourself. EF also has a very supportive and effective nutrition / weight loss program, plus periodic training programs to help members tackle a Spartan race, half marathon or triathlon. I've participated in many of these and find them to be so much fun! I'm very happy with the investment I've made in improving and maintaining my physical health, and I'm confident that it will pay dividends in the years to come. I joined empowered fitness over 8 yrs ago and it was the best thing I've ever done for myself. I was in my 50's and was concerned about my health. I was happy as a clam doing my own run training until I decided to do trail running. That's when I met EF as I joined their trail running program. After completing the Montara trail race, I joined EF and boy did I make the right decision. Not only have I been in the best shape but met new friends and checked off some of items in my bucket list ~ Spartan Trifecta, Spartan Stadium sprint, Half Moon Bay Sprint Triathlon and the Golden Gate Half Marathon. I initially stumbled across EF right before one of their 28 day GLC's. I wanted to jumpstart my diet/work out after just having had my 3rd baby. From the first email from Diana, to the emails during the challenge and since, I was very impressed, motivated and excited for my new fitness journey. Due to a couple challenges along the way, I wasn't able to attend classes regularly or make the weigh ins. But I did stick with and follow to a T the food portion of the challenge and I'm happy to say I lost 11 lbs in that one month! Like Diana had said from day 1, "you can't exercise away a bad diet" and nothing could be more true. Since completing the challenge my sugar cravings are 100% gone, no joke. Just the other night I ate dinner at one of my favorite places and literally had stomach pains later (other people in our group ate the same things and were fine). I guess my body just isn't used to eating all the grease and fat anymore. All of the classes at EF are great, and all the trainers are very knowledgeable and motivating. Everyone has been awesome. Since completing the challenge I intend to keep with my new eating habits and will sign up for a monthly membership, so that I can continue with EF. Empowered Fitness has always been a special fitness studio, but what they have accomplished during the stay-in-place order due to COVID-19 is phenomenal. They didn't miss a beat and within no time they had live streaming and recorded fitness classes for their members. They also safely completed their Get Lean Challenge and have hosted healthy food seminars on Zoom. The combination of these offerings in diet and fitness has allowed me to lose 15 pounds during the pandemic and get completely toned - not an easy feat! This is a long overdue review. . . If you're looking for just a place to put on your headphones, climb on an elliptical and read a magazine/watch ESPN - you should probably just skip this review. However, if you're interested in really getting a good workout (no matter your level of fitness or ability) this is the place. They truly have something for every level - from a hardcore kettle bell class to the opposite end of the spectrum - you're set. After 90+ days, this is my 2 cents: What impressed me the most from my first day of class is the level of instruction and awareness that you get from the team Diane/Mike have assembled. The g/f and I have had the opportunity to work with all of them and they are all All Stars: - We love the enthusiasm we get from Diane, Jenn and Kim! This is another unsung thing when looking for a place to work out. While there have been plenty of times when we've had to drag ourselves to a class, these three ALWAYS have a way of making us glad we came. - What you get from Matthew is a level of experience and form that is missing from most places I've experienced. Matthew will ensure you're using correct form and not injuring yourself - I "thought" I knew how to do things correctly, until Matthew showed me the way. Finally, the other quality you'll find with the team is they really seem to care about your well being. Have an injury and can't quite do the named exercise? I'm in my second month of 3 or 4 work outs a week here with Diana and her team. I had never joined 'exercise classes' before and I'm so glad I chose this place to do so. The classes are challenging, fun, enjoyable, hard - all these things and more. I love being able to do work outs on the beach! We often have most of the class outside - we live in a beautiful area and I enjoy being able to get out in the fresh air - it seems to make the work easier (sometimes :). A class generally comprises of a warm-up, a run of some length and then a wide variety of circuit training and strength exercises that focus on many different muscle groups. The trainers really seem to carefully plan and organize each and every workout. We end with a stretch and plenty of feel good, tired goodbyes. Class size varies but there's always at least 2 trainers on hand to watch our form during exercises and keep us motivated. Recently, there have been new classes added that focus on stretching and strengthening, TRX workouts and yoga. I find the available times of classes throughout the week to be good although a few more evenings would be nice - however, I'm not sure how much energy I'd have in an evening which is probably why most classes are earlier :) I've found myself stronger, trimmer and with more stamina in just these past 6 weeks and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the same changes as I continue, what I expect, will be a long relationship. If you want to change your life, these people can help. I recommend them highly. read more

I decided to join Empowered Fitness 6-weeks before my first Tahoe Tough Mudder event (September 2013). I had been training on my own and felt I was in "good" shape. After one week with EF I could feel my body making a significant change. After three weeks I could see the toning take shape and endurance propelling me forward. 45 days later I completed Tough Mudder with ease, faster than the average time. Empowered Fitness had me so well prepared, I wished Tough Mudder were...Tougher. The EF staff and members have created a real sense of camaraderie. Everyone is incredibly cheerful and encouraging. Yesterday I ran the Pumpkin Run 10k, and EF staffers were camped out at different parts of the race cheering on fellow EF members and other race participants. Empowered Fitness (EF) has been the program that has changed me. I've been an athlete and worked out my whole life but after having kids I was in a rut and needed a kick start. I joined in 2011 and haven't stopped. I've lost 25 lbs and I attribute that success to the accountability factor of their program. Diana and Mike and all of the other trainers are always checking in with their clients and make themselves available to create healthy eating plans, a total fitness package. The camaraderie with the other members is also what keeps me coming back. We are like a team going to practice. Love the intensity. I never leave here thinking I could have done more - it's always a workout that pushes you as far as you can go & the team really helps make sure that you give everything you've got & then some. I have been working out with Diana and the crew at Empowered Fitness for years and years - I'm addicted! The workouts are varied and the trainers, each and every one of them, are fantastic. Empowered Fitness is an awesome place to get an expertly crafted workout. No need to worry about training legs one day and arms the next. The trainers choreograph each workout as a full body workout. I've been a member for over 6 years and have rarely done the same workout twice. The trainers are enthusiastic and always give options to modify an exercise. In addition to great workouts, Empowered Fitness has programming to target weight loss through their Get Lean Challenge and a program to feel less tired and more focused through their 14 cleanse. I was skeptical about the 14 day cleanse but honestly, it worked. Finally, Diana sends out weekly updates with encouraging words of wisdom about eating healthy, fighting stress, getting enough sleep etc. I read her emails and wonder, how does she know. I continue to be a loyal client of Empowered. They have expanded their classes to include a pure strength class which is a nice balance to the other offerings. I also like the balanced mix of male and female and all age groups. They do a lot of work with the High School sports teams. It is nice to workout with teenagers from basketball, cross country etc.. I joined Empowered Fitness at the end of January after I saw an ad for their Get Lean Challenge. I needed something to jumpstart me, so I thought I'd give it a try. 8 pounds and 4 inches down in 4 weeks and I signed up to join! One of their core values is a "Sincere Commitment to Caring For Our Clients." Well I can tell you, I feel cared about. This is not a gym where there are 70 people crammed into a Zumba class. These are more like small group personal training classes. The trainers know your name, you feel welcomed, they show you modifications if you cant do the specified exercise and every workout is different. Your in it with your fellow classmates and everyone cheers each other on. I joined EF a bit over a year ago and without their coaching and instruction I wouldn't have had the success I've had so far! They are incredibly helpful and motivating. Since shelter in place they pivoted their program to accommodate its members virtually and holy moly it's been amazing!
