Went in with husband generally looking for a couple of plants to brighten up my home. We wanted to support local. Very unfriendly and unwelcoming place. Staff seemed annoyed by us and hardly wanted to answer questions or give customer service. At checkout I was even discouraged from buying something I later needed, pretty sure she just wanted us to go. I could've got the 2 plants I purchased for 1/3 of the price. I love this nursery so much. The staff are really wonderful, and so very helpful. Kelly, Madeleine, and Laurel are all so helpful. Anything we've ever needed for the garden, if they didn't have it, they've always been able to bring it in. You can call and ask if they have something, which is not the case with all nurseries (some have voicemails saying they're too busy to come to the phone because pandemic gardening is making nurseries everywhere busy). They help you to your car. They load your car. If they've run out of something (like ladybugs) they'll put your name on a list and call you when it comes in. My favorite nursery in the bay! YAS, the Bay! I LOVEEEE their indoor greenhouse and have always come here whenever I'm looking for basically any indoor plants. The comment, the rare , you name it. I also followed their Instagram page, and they seems to always update on what's the next batch of plants that's in the house! Staff are super friendly, always greeted with a smile and very helpful with the plants. Bonus: I remember one time I was looking for a white nursery pot that I can never find in all the nursery I've been to, asked them if they ever carry any white nursery plant pot with the size that I want, and guessed what? They are either going to order it because they just ran out OR they order it because I asked. Either way, I'm very surprised with their FANTASTIC customer service. (Most nursery will just tell me "no, we don't have white nursery plant pot"). read more

I can wander around here for hours ... it's so much nicer than Home Depot's garden section. Okay okay - I know sort of not a fair comparison - it's like comparing a Forever 21 handbag with one from Kate Spade ... I've got stuff in my garden and home from both locations (and more) - and plants have thrived and died from both as well. I probably wouldn't be picking up 30 pots and 500 lbs of soil from here ... but it's a great place to learn and discover new houseplants, ask more specific questions and find more unique varietals. I got a 6 pack of strawberries here earlier this season (and they are all baring fruit now) and a smaller philodendron which is settling in nicely. I like that they have small / medium / larges sizes of plants so you can find what is just right for you. read more

Probably the least helpful staff I've encountered in recent times. And worse, it was not busy when we were there (I try to give benefit of the doubt) so there really is no excuse why there is lack of service. I was browsing a shelf looking to see if they had rooting powder/ hormone. A worker nearby was scrolling/browsing on the phone the entire time, didn't offer help whatsoever. I looked that persons way to ask and it felt obvious that eye contact was being avoided. Then this person went into the back room. Lol 2nd unhelpful staff I encountered. We stood in line after a customer who was rung up on her purchases. The cashier lady (perhaps owner?) even looked at us when she was finished with that customer and just walked into the back room. No word whatsoever on if she'd be back or if anyone else would be helping us - nothing. So we waited thinking she'd be back but after a few moments seeing her back there, it was clear she was not. (Eye roll) Like WTF. Someone walking by picked up on that we were standing looking slightly confused so he helped us. We were there for a total of 15 or so minutes and despite having several nice plants and a pretty wide variety, I probably will never be back. read more

I have recently become a plant mom and can't stop buying new plant babies. I came across Encinal Nursery on Yelp and decided to stop by. They have a lovely variety of tropical and indoor plants, as well as flowers and other outdoor plants. I found a beautiful Queen Marble Pothos and a pretty white round planter and took both home. I noticed they had a few large fiddle leaf, monstera, and palms, but not any smaller/medium ones. I have a small space so unfortunately, I couldn't take home the larger varieties. My only other complaint is that the employees were not very friendly or helpful. No one greeted me when I entered, no one was around for me to ask questions or check on me. There was a couple who was checking out that didn't speak english well and had a few questions, and the lady at the register seemed to have an attitude. Even as I was checking out, she did not say "hello" or "how are you", she spoke to her coworkers (using profanity btw) while ringing me up then just dismissed me. Bleh, I hate poor customer service. read more

Our go-to nursery for indoor plants and succulents, which we're really into at the moment. You can find this nursery in a residential area of Alameda, so plan to find street parking. Good news is that every time we have gone on the weekend there has always been 1 or 2 spaces in front. Even though they're smaller than a few of the other East Bay nurseries, they have a nice variety of plants, flowers, ceramic pots, bulbs and seeds, and gardening supplies. The staff let you browse on your own, but are willing to help you, if needed, so be sure to ask them if you do. I also like that they offer tips on how to care for your plants when you're checking out as I learn something new each time! read more

This place is awesome! So many varieties of plants that satisfied my unprecedented gardening needs during COVID-19 shelter-in-place, especially during Spring-Summer, and even into Fall. I was more so into buying edibles like veggie plants #foodmotivated, so they always had a variety of tomatoes that I was interested in, kale, lettuce, spinach, squash, onions, peppers, and herbs (cilantro, parsley, rosemary). But they have so much more! Lol I just wanted the stuff I could eat. They also had lavender which I twice was unsuccessful at making flourish lol but that is on me!! #workingonthegreenthumb Just one star off because they always seemed so busy and understaffed! I guess everyone was gardening in 2020 so I felt bad for them, but at the same time I hope they were thriving with everyone gardening and buying stuff! It's also hard to know sometimes if they're going to have something. I called looking for cilantro and they told me they didn't have it. They told me to call back on a certain day when they would restock, but then I did and they already had run out on a different (previous) day than I was told they were restocking. I guess the main takeaway is that it's hard for them to predict their inventory, but I don't blame them. I can only imagine it being hard to handle COVID-19 delays due to new procedures, especially earlier this year. More so, my advice is that you should just come and browse rather than try to call and ask them if they have something specific. You could very well find something else interesting that you weren't looking for in the first place! :) Parking isn't a breeze but isn't the worst. It's street parking and it's hard to find a spot right nearby sometimes. I usually find a spot a minute or two walk from the nursery entrance. It just seems like a busy street. Parking is free though and you can roll your plants out on one of their carts if you find yourself suddenly rolling deep with plants lol like I have many a time. And you can then return it. I've had an employee help me to my car before and he took the cart back for me. The sidewalk to my parked car was rocky and it was hard to be careful and not tip over the plants! If you can bring boxes or something to hold your plants steady, that would be ideal. Reasonable prices and they take credit card. They also have soil, manure, and pots. I was around the area and stumbled upon this cute nursery. They have a large variety of house plants to succulents and they also have a huge selection of pretty aesthetic pots. (They can drill a drainage hole for you). Plants and pots were priced reasonably. I bought two 2" inch succulent plant for $2.99 each and 2 pots for around $17 each. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Only down side is the parking, there are limited street parking spots out front but that's not going to stop me from coming again. read more

I recently put sod in my backyard as a DIY project since I had the extra time, with all that's going on in the world now. The team at Encinal Nursery did a great job and took care of me. They were very helpful giving me advice on what soil to go with and how to install the sod. Also, there was a slight delay with the soil being out of stock, but Dan called me to give me an update and kept me in the loop. How did I not know about this nursery sooner?! I've been to nurseries all around the bay but I really enjoy the variety of plants carried here at Encinal Nursery. Also, compared to other nearby nurseries I feel the prices are fairly reasonable. I was able to find a rare birkin philodendron today as well as a beautiful, healthy spider plant for only $4.99. I've been here twice in a week lol I think it's safe to say I will be a returning customer. If you ever are looking for a specific plant, they're open to you giving them a call and asking to hold a plant for you. They also have a variety of soils/fertilizer/pots for all your plant needs. This place is on my way home when I'm running errands, so I always tell myself "if there's parking out front, I'll go in" .... most of the time I drive by, there's always a parking spot, so lucky me! This is the first location I found that offered Orbifolias - and I must have called half a dozen nurseries but didn't have any at the time. This is also the only location that I found that carried Micans, which is also hard to find in nurseries. This is definitely my favorite nursery to visit. If you're a beginner they have plenty of smaller inexpensive plants to get your feet wet. They had beautiful hanging Hoyas and silver pothos and I really wanted to buy them all ! I ended up buying an asparagus fern $8 , a large variegated stromanthe $25.99 and a small variegated Hoya $12. Can't beat those prices and quality and I have been looking everywhere! read more

I cannot believe it took me three years to visit this place after moving to Alameda. This place is huge and their selection seems very large. We got a cactus, little palm tree and one larger house plant. I do not know much about plants so it would've been nice if there was more guidance of some sort but at checkout I did ask everything from the name of the palm tree to toxicity to cats to care instructions and the cashier was very knowledgeable. I will absolutely come back for more if my cat won't eat all the plants (again). read more

Sunday afternoon, my mom and I went garden shopping because we wanted to revamp our front yard. Since it was only 2 weeks away from Mothers' Day and I had no idea what she wanted, I decided to splurge on whatever plants she wanted. We stopped by two Home Depot before heading to Encinal Nursery because we wanted more options. We arrived 30 minutes before closing! Wish we had more time because there were so many plants. The roses were so beautiful and they even had one that looked like a peony. The rose bushes were $30 and the trees were $60. ALMOST the same price as Home Depot! NOT BAD whatsoever. There were so many variety of plants! They have all kinds of succulents in all kinds of sizes. My favorite were the lavender variety. All the ones we bought were $5 a pot which was very affordable. I was also in love with the fiddle leaf figs. They look so nice and healthy but starting at $40 and with my beginners gardening skills, I was not ready to splurge on them yet. The plants all look very healthy and well taken care of. You can definitely see the love that was put into caring for each one of these plants. read more

One of the best customer service I've experienced in a while. What initially started out as a window shopping trip turned into me walking away with a baby monstera, a few succulents, a monkey tail plant. All for $15-$30 less than what I would have paid at other locations. What brought me here to leave a review was the customer service I received. Laurel (sorry if I messed up name here) took my name and number down because they didn't have the plant I was looking for. She told me she will call me if she sees one. Usually, I'm skeptic when things like this happen because I rarely do get the phone calls, and I understand they have many customers daily, so chances were slim. A few weeks have past, and I got a call from Laurel telling me a few copper spoon plants just arrived at the nursery. I went straight there to pick up 2. Definitely exceeded my expectations, and will be returning to shop here as often as I can. read more

I wasn't planning on buying any plants this holiday weekend (famous last words), but somehow the stars aligned and the beautiful, massive Monstera I saw on Instagram had not been purchased by the time I got to it. Got some details over Instagram as soon as the nursery opened today, then immediately got on the phone to buy it. I had previously purchased plants over the phone (including a giant golden pothos I had also seen on IG), but I usually go in to pick things up myself. This time, the staff member that helped me out also checked out which pots were available that would work for my new plant (thank you!), and I selected one sight unseen. The nursery repotted the Monstera for me in said pot and delivered to my house - all in the space of about four hours. The praise from my previous reviews still applies: the plant is even better in person (probably one of if not the nicest Monstera I've ever seen in someone's house - except this time it's in my house!), and it was transported with care and delivered by two friendly staff members. I always feel like I'm getting a good value here, especially because they offer services like repotting and delivery. I haven't seen this size Monstera available for what I paid anywhere else; if anything, other specimens I've seen have maybe been about half the size or smaller while being at least $100 more expensive. Greg and his team are the best. They are always helpful and have a great selection of healthy plants that do well in this area. Whenever I pick a plant, they offer suggestions on care and ask if I need plant food or soil. They were have delivered large orders to my house on several occasions and are prompt and friendly when they arrive. I have purchased plants from big box stores before and my success rate at keeping them alive is probably half that as what I get when I buy from Encinal. Factor in my time and money, plus the overall experience of shopping there and Encinal Nursery beats the competitors every time. read more
