Saw the cutest heart plants outside of Moss & Spade and walked in. The friendly person working there looked like she could be in magazine for a plant store and I told her so! She was kind to let me take a photo. She's holding her favorite plants, polka-dotted beauties that look surreal and painted. She spoke highly of Jessica the owner who apparently also designed the lovely logo; while I haven't met her, the selection of plants here is stellar. I excitedly left with three heart plants, two variegated, which is a rare treat for Hoyas. The leaves are glossy and/or healthy on all of the unique plants here. The cutest plant and decor shop on Piedmont Ave! I popped in on a whim while strolling through the neighborhood. I was looking for a little gift for my friend who was getting married that weekend. It happened to be the day before Valentine's Day, so they were fully stocked with beautiful dried flower bouquets by Idlewild Floral. I decided to scoop one up with a card and it was the sweetest gift. I feel the prices are very fair (especially for CA) as well. The staff was friendly and helpful. If I wasn't traveling, I would have definitely gotten some goodies for myself, too! read more

Amazing store and staff! Bought my first plant here! I purchased the Calathea Beauty Star plant for it's beautiful leaf patterns and easy care. I've been eyeing different plants and initially came into the store looking for a snake plant. Turns out it's not pet safe... so I found this beauty instead. I liked that the store didn't seem overly expensive and had a good variety of plants. The store itself is beautiful too! So aesthetic!! The staff member present was very knowledgeable and kind! Lovely little plant shop Felt so personable, thoughtful even; I can appreciate that attention to detail. One of my residents lost his bird, she was a friend to him for 39 years. Wanted to find him something to remind him of her, that Would never leave. First and foremost, I live, yearn, and breathe to support a small, lil' local BIPOC-owned business. All the more if the business is promoting something associated with health, longevity, and just plain joy. Not to mention, the staff here were def sweet, helpful, and courteous. But if you've got much less than a gentrifier's pocketbook, this place is flat-out PAINFULLY overpriced. Now, in all fairness, it's located on Piedmont Avenue, I had half an hour to kill before my nail appointment at nearby Classic Nail (at least they're not overpriced, just by the by!), and my sweet, sweet hometown seems to cater to a very specific demographic now, so I'm not surprised to see something like a plant boutique where you can pay upwards of a hundred for something relatively simple that you could've bought elsewhere for a much more... "cost-effective" price. What you're paying for at Moss and Spade is the service. You're paying for the input and wisdom of Jack and Jessica and Michalla and whoever else may be on the roster. Because they're geniuses when it comes to plants, they have superstar personalities, and they genuinely seem to care about what they do. But this isn't a review for personalities, this is a review for a local business that doesn't seem to make room for what the locals can realistically afford. I'm all about knowing your worth and recognizing the crucial needs of a small business. And I suppose their prices are just reflective of where they're at and their all of the understanding they can offer up. But if they can't offer up decent prices, I'll stick to asking my neighbors for clippings and picking up pottery from local makers and friends. Worth the hype-ness but not the prices. read more

Cute lil plant shop in piedmont that I took advantage of the Labor Day sales since everything was 25% off! Like the other reviewer said, a lot of the plants here are a bit on the expensive side but their presentation is definitely very cute. They also have a sale rack where all the plants on it are 50% off! And despite being over priced they're still cheaper than the waterlily place down the street. I got some purple decorative peppers and they were adorable but there's some plants in there that are like hundreds of dollars lol. And some small plants that I've gotten from farmers markets for like $3 there sell for $10. so definitely know the price of some stuff. First, I want to say that their social media and marketing is genius. It's one of the few plant shops in Oakland that seem to constantly be on my feed, which is why I visited. Overall, the prices here are pretty inflated and their selection isn't as wide as you'd hope for the price points they have. In my experience, it looks like plants here are about 2-3x their wholesale price. I think it's important to shop at local nurseries, but it's almost egregious how much more plants are here compared to local nurseries and plant shops in the area. The customer service the few times I came wasn't noteworthy. The first several times I came in, I wasn't acknowledged and couldn't get help trying to search for a specific rare philodendron I've been trying to get. When I tried to ask about specific rare hybrids, I was met with a bit of contention over mispronouncing a species. In my most recent experience, I bought a spagnum moss pole so one of my climbing philos could use it to anchor itself. When I opened the product, it was bent but I still tried to salvage it. The next day, I woke up to the plant I staked it on almost fully broken at its base because the pole bent over. I called to return the pole, then went in and was given the most anxiety-ridden service over the return policy being broken/etc. I had to be persistent to get my return which I think is a bit ridiculous being that the item almost killed my plant. I think if you're going to be marketing items this high, there should be a good customer report and high quality of service. read more

Beautiful plants in great condition. I purchased a huge marble queen pothos after eyeing it and coming back to admire it once before finally purchasing the next day. The owner Jessica did not place any pressure at all on the sale, and shared all her knowledge with me. All the plants are in excellent condition, and I can feel the quality difference in touching the leaves of my pothos compared to most stores. Included in your purchase is access to the owner, Jess's vast knowledge of plant care. She's helped me sort out my pre-existing plants and helped figure out which new plants fit my lifestyle best. Plants are really well taken care of, and so many different plants of all shapes and sizes. I decided to come in with my family and we are all in different stages of plant parenting.
