The hotel is nice, very clean! Same with the pool , which is small but good enough for everyone to enjoy! My issue is the customer service. After a long day at the Legoland water park my family of 4 was ready to shower and get to sleep. Unfortunately the house keeping, which I might add did a wonderful job, they forgot to add towels. I called the front desk, at least 5 times till I finally got through and asked if we could get more towels. She said I need to go grab them from the front , so I did! Once I got there the heavy set older white lady looked very overwhelmed and gave me 2 towels. I asked for 2 more since we are a family of 4. She said there were NO MORE TOWELS TILL THE MORNING !!! So you're telling me in this entire hotel there aren't any towels !!?? Find that hard to believe !! Also at night every other hour there is a train that passes by and blares its horn , so I could not get any sleep! Also at the pool there is no towels available once they are gone . read more

This hotel perfectly served its purpose for a few nights stay. For anyone who may be confused, this used to be a Best Western but now is rebranded as The Encinitian. We stayed for a few nights during our home fumigation and after comparing just about every motel/inn around the Encinitas and Carlsbad area, I'm really glad we settled on this one. Pros: it is clean! That's not to be confused with showing its age, because it absolutely could use a facelift, but the cleanliness was there. It's convenient! Right by the freeway and yet close enough to downtown Encinitas to walk to dinner or shopping. Conveniently located right across the street from Lazy Acres, a laundromat, Mexican food, and Mr. Peabody's bar and grill. It has a nice little gym. Was there some dust? Sure but the equipment and weights did the trick, and the small gym had a little patio to stand on during cool downs. NO added cost to park cars! Some hotels were asking for $30-40 per night per vehicle and this place had the cost covered in the standard $15 hotel fee. Park as many cars as you'd like. Come and go as you please. The parking lot felt safe, and as a woman making several trips to my car in the evening I felt just fine. It's nice that you're up on a hill so you do feel more secluded from any possible unsavory surprises. No hidden fees! They are upfront about taxes and there were no surprises. WiFi was just fine, though our stay was not during busy season. Continental breakfast is included! Fried eggs and sausage were very average, but grab some coffee, a pastry, some toast, juice, cereal and you don't have to think twice about breakfast. It was basic but not gross by any means. This is not the place for you if you're expecting 5 star service, but it would be a great spot for families visiting town. Note: turn down service and daily cleaning is not provided but this was not an issue for us staying just a few days. Comfy beds and pillows, towels are nice. Front desk staff was helpful when needed, and every room has a nice balcony view. The walls are thin so if you're by the elevator or ice machine, expect to hear some kids running down the halls, but this place has everything we needed at a very affordable rate. I found the Encinitas hotel on Expedia, and for what you get, I think the price is pretty fair. This is an aging property, but the bathrooms were updated and parking and breakfast were included. Unfortunately, we didn't get to have breakfast because of activity commitments, but it is served at the pool clubhouse starting at 7:30am. The room was much larger than I expected, and in the bathroom the toilet and shower are behind a door, while the sink is outside the door. This lets 2 people get ready at the same time, and is a very clever idea. Our room even came with a mini fridge, and the beds were comfortable. This hotel is close to the 5 freeway and a bunch of restaurants, so don't pass this up if you need a family-friendly budget choice. read more

We arrived at the hotel and immediately were met with very weird energy. The person acted as if we were coming to ruin their day. Upon asking for my name for the reservation he mentioned we got a queen room. I said no we did not. He then said, I can assure you you did. We would not randomly change the room from a king to a queen. At the point of him acting as crazy as he was, I said just keep the room as is. I later confirmed on my booking that the room was supposed to be a king. This is not a hotels.com issue but a hotel staff issue. Also, he gave us the keys to the room and did not even bother to activate the keys. Again, had he been focused on customer service and not trying to prove an incorrect point, we would have had not only the correct room type but a working key. And there was constant noise from trains all throughout the evening. There is another review on here where the person we are referring to is seen bullying guests. We won't be returning. I had prepaid for my room for two days. After I received my credit card bill I discovered a charge for $30. The front desk could not explain it and referred me to sales. Sales never returned my call. My email went unanswered. The room was clean, except for the floor. All staff was nice and the breakfast was okay. Pillow alert - Bring your own pillow. Their pillows are small and hard. No comfortable seating or sofa for the price. Floors are cold, no rug by the bed. No USB plugs at all. Also, the room has a smell. Pros: Great view, large balcony, HBO, Large tiled shower, great location. Stayed here end of April 2023. I was going to give it a second try during the summer, but not sure as I was unable to sleep. Update: I bought my own pillow at a nearby Target and slept well the second night. I stayed at the best western moonlight beach Encinitas ca on Saturday 3/19 I rented 2 rooms $500 on Saturday. Room 218 did not have a working tv, was dirty and smelled. I left 2 messages trying to get ahold of someone regarding tv. I finally walked to front desk and lady said she could not help me. She was only one there, they were sold out and no maintenance. She said I'd have to wait to talk to manager next day but no idea when. So I paid 250 for a room that I could not watch tv even though it advertised tv. My husband is also handicapped and we could not find parking because people were illegally parked in handicap parking and red zone parking. This place is a nightmare!! My stay started out ok. But then it took a terrible turn after the cops where called on me by someone. While that may have not been the fault of the hotel. Many other things where -actual ants in the hot tub (because of this on my wife's birthday I had to pick them out of her hair and teeth) -moldy and disgusting green shower head -bird poop on balcony -the dust that covered the curtains -the weird noise from the bathroom when the shower and the heat are on -even AFTER I asked. No towels in the pool area -no one to bring extra towels -the iced over mini-fridge Now the encinitan is not a big name hotel, so I don't expect the coffee to be good, or the 3$ vending machine soda to have something besides Pepsi and water. I can't expect for a small hotel to have a covered smoking area or elevators with up to date inspections. Because that's all stuff that only big name hotels have the flow to care about. But when it's a small "family owned" establishment. You at least expect the place to be clean. You at least expect the facilities to not put bugs in your hair. Those aren't budget issues. The Best Western chain isn't exactly five stars, but I still expect a certain level of hospitality and cleanliness. Unfortunately, this was NOT the case here. First and foremost, there is NO turndown service. No matter how many days you stay, you clean your own room. On vacation. The location drew us in, it's minutes from moonlight beach and all the best restaurants and bars. However, the staff was argumentative, unfriendly and our room was just stinky! The laundry room was busy all the time from guests washing and drying their own sheets, how pitiful. To not have clean towels and sheets on vacation is mind-blowing!! This place is NOTHING like the photos. First, the lobby is in the parking garage. It is not safe, especially if you're a woman traveling alone. I've had to stay here for a couple weeks and although the location is amazing, the customer service is terrible. The lady at front desk is rude to the customers and was literally laughing suggestions to her. There is a major issue with the service from the front desk people. I've never experienced anything like it. Great location, relatively cheap, the breakfast is very pitiful, all the eggs pre packaged that look and taste like plastic. This review has been a long time coming. My friend and I actually stayed here back in September. We were on a road trip to visit my friend's daughter. My friend has stayed at this hotel for years when she would come down and visit her daughter at college. Then her daughter decided to move down here. My friend was raving about this hotel. Such a great location to Moonlight Beach, shopping and restaurants. She lives the kitchen with the full size fridge and microwave. We love to eat out and our eyes are bigger then our stomachs- at this hotel, left overs are not a problem. You can refrigerate them and then microwave the food when hungry. She also said how yummy the breakfast buffet was. How she loved it right by the pool, and the selections were great. Obviously with covid- we knew things would be different this visit. The hotel still has coffee with flavored creamers as well as infused waters in the lobby. Always need a cup of coffee to get started in the morning, and the lemon and lime infused ice water was refreshing when we would come back in from the beach. The breakfast is now a tiny take away bag with an apple juice, pastry, and nuts pack. The pastry flavors were different depending on the day, apple, berry, cheese. By our last morning there, they were out of nuts in the go bags. We loved the space of the rooms. I was able to lay out my yoga mat and get some good yoga in with plenty of room to move without bumping a wall The room appeared to be clean. Our main issue with the hotel- and why it took me so long to write this review was because 2 of the 3 nights we stayed here we were woken up at 2 am when the people above us would get back to their rooms. They were very loud and were waking up everyone. The noise would last at least 2 hours both nights. It sounded like they were moving furniture and bowling above us. We talked to the front desk- but it didn't stop. Front desk told us after the second night complaining that the people would be gone the next night. Honestly, security should have been sent to the room to quiet them down. You could hear other guests yelling at them to stop and be quiet. Guests should not have to deal with this. Also, the people above us dumped coffee all over our chairs and table on our patio. It appeared to be intentional, there wasn't a cup that had fallen, just all the coffee. I originally planned to do yoga outside and enjoy the beach air/ but was concerned about having things poured on me. The pool was open/ we would sit out there in the morning and plan our day. Again- we didn't want to use our deck. Plenty of parking every time we came back. The delay in the review was deciding on 2 or 3 stars based on our visit. I do like this hotel/ and my friend has been back since- without any noisy neighbors. Just wish the hotel would handle noisy and disrespectful guests better. Beds were kind of rough but customer service was nice. The room was clean and the balcony was beautiful. We got the Shore Thing suite in the morning you could see the ocean but I'll say it's not like the pictures... but you can see it. The A/C was loud when it turned on at night and there's a train nearby that we heard both nights we were there (multiple times) the toilet was also pretty loud so keep that in mind when going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. **WARNING! AVOID! BED BUGS!** After the first night of our stay at this hotel (October 9th), my husband woke up with itchy bites in a line all over his arms and a cluster on his hands. Over the next few days, more bites began to show up all over our neck and face. Upon returning home, we immediately went to a dermatologist who confirmed these were BED BUG BITES. We have tried contacting this hotel for over a week after our stay. We have tried calling corporate and the property itself. Corporate was helpful but the hotel NEVER followed up with us; they told Corporate they emailed us a coupon off our next stay but we never received anything-- not even a phone call back. We have stayed at this place without incident before and are beyond appalled at the lack of professionalism we've encountered. We don't want a coupon-- we want a full refund. They have ignored us and denied us a refund. We now have to get our home inspected to make sure we didn't bring any home which has been a HUGE headache and expense. Here's a WARNING to our Encinitas community to avoid this "hotel", the Encinitan (formerly Best Western). My wife and I were very excited to stay here for our anniversary in December, 2023. We were excited to enjoy an ocean view, and we were happy to get the best ocean view they had. After checking in, we immediately noticed a "strange", stuffy smell in the room, so we opened the balcony door to air it out and left the door open while we went out to dinner. After returning, we still noticed it, and decided to watch a movie and see if it would go away. Well, about 45 minutes later, this smell began to noticably effect our throats and we both started feeling a headache. Finally I went to the front desk to inform them we couldn't stay here in this room any longer, and the woman (initially very kind and later terribly rude) offered me another room to check out to see if it would work. Exact same smell- really chemical and now it was clear it was toxic. We packed our bag and told the front desk the problem, saying they must be aware of it. The woman didn't respond and looked very embarassed- clearly this was typical. I expressed our disappointment that we had to leave (at 11pm on our anniversary), and firmly requested they credit back my credit card in full. She gave me the card of the General Manager Vijay Daya. I have left messages by phone and email to have my charge of over $200 credited back-- and Vijay has never bothered to respond, and the charge has remained (it's now been 5 weeks). Additionally, our headaches and soar throat lasted throughout much of the next day. Now I need to go through the aggravation and time to dispute this charge with my credit card company. So although an ocean view hotel is rare and enticing, please save yourselves the horrible experience we suffered through (and are still dealing with). My wife and I both own wellness centers in Encinitas and both rely on referrals and building a great reputation in serving our community, and this way of doing business is so sad and unfortunate. 5 stars for clean! We stayed 5 days and our rooms were spotless. Clean tub, clean bedding, clean floors, no odd smells. You can see the ocean for the third balcony. Staff was helpful friendly and no issues getting the room we paid for. Breakfast was better than most Several options to choose from. Everything appeared cooked appropriately. Free parking, fast internet. Great variety of shops, coffee and eateries neAr by. My teenagers commented on the cleanliness of the city and the amazing lazy acres market across the way for healthily options. read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. We checked in at 6pm on thanksgiving evening. Upon entering the lobby the girl at the front desk was cold and very unfriendly. We reserved a king suit (two rooms) with a kitchen so that I could store food, my husband could stay up later to watch tv and get work done while my 2 year old daughter and I could get some rest. We walked in to find the room under construction. The kitchen was completely missing, there was exposed plumbing, no baseboards, there were no covers on the air conditioning vents, the tv didn't work, the front door didn't lock, a metal bar was left in the bathroom that my daughter found and scraped herself with, and worst of all- the paint fumes were very strong. Not exactly what I should be breathing since I'm 5 months pregnant. The girl at the front acted as though she didn't give a crap. She said we should talk to the manager in the morning and that she was the only employee on the property. The next morning there were no managers by the time we had to leave at 10 am. I left my number but never got a call back. I have called maybe 20 times and am told that the manager is on a conference call, in a meeting, or not available. I have left my number multiple times asking for a call back as well as left a message on the managers voice mail and still haven't received a call back. I am applauded that they would rent this room for $200, not offer any compensation, and will not return my phone calls. Update- after two weeks all I have gotten from the hotel is a form letter stating they were sorry and and offered 25% off our next stay. What?! Pretty Presumptuous that we would ever stay there again. i wrote the manager back and he once again - he didn't respond. Corporate also said the hotel agreed to refund me $50. Great. So now I paid $150 for an unsafe construction site. However, I still haven't received the refund on my credit card. We will NEVER stay again. We've stayed here twice now and I really like this property. It's pet-friendly! Your room will be in the first floor in you bring your dog. A pet fee of $20/day applies. The room setup is large, though unique. The closet is by the front door, then you pass the kitchen and living room into the bedroom to get to the large armoire. The best part: Balconies with comfy chairs to sit and enjoy sunset views. The kitchen is pretty well stocked with an (empty) mini fridge, glasses, mugs, plates and bowls, utensils, pots, etc. They even thought of common necessities like bottle openers too. The hotel is a short walk to downtown Encinitas. The only tricky part is walking up/down the long driveway or braving a steep trail (you'll see a door to the trail just opposite the lobby, next to the old Boathouse restaurant). There is also a lovely park directly across the street - especially great for those of us traveling with pups. Breakfast (complimentary) is served at the club house in the pool area. It's decent - with a selection of cereals, oatmeal and toppings, a variety of yogurt, bake-your-own waffles (regular or mini), toast and English muffins. Hot food varies but there is usually an egg dish (scrambled or folded omelettes) and bacon or sausage. Donuts and danishes run out early! They even stock whipped cream in the mini fridge for hot chocolate (or coffee). It's not the fanciest hotel but... The rooms are large. The beds are comfy. The rooms are clean. Breakfast is included. We stayed here several times as we have family nearby. However the past couple of times- since they parted with Best Western- have been far from comfortable or enjoyable. Last night we were in a room that had a door to an adjoining room. I did not request or want that type of room but it was all they had despite making the reservation in advance. The people in the next room were "going at it" all night long- we could hear everything! I tried knocking on the wall but that did not help. I called the desk but no one answered. Horrible experience checking in. One front desk staffer hung back and never so much as flinched when I went up to check in. The other worker was unpleasant, unfriendly, nasty and clearly hates her job. No friendly greeting , no offer to help with my ask of a late check out. I let them know I'm a premiere member of their rewards program. They could care less, I guess they don't care about loyal customers. This place sucks tried to get you to pay to reserve the room ahead of time for no apparent reason. I asked if room was available 30 minutes before arriving to the location when I was told room was still available and that I could reserve over the phone, the attendant seemed very keen on getting me to pay for the reservation, anyway long story short came out on my birthday expecting to have a front ocean view room but instead had to leave in my car with no room 1/5. I find it very hard to believe someone rented the same room I wanted within the 30 minutes I was arriving after the room was available literally all day. It honestly seems like they try to get you to reserve a room over the phone than once you try to come on will try to give you a different room. read more

The staff is nice, however, the hotel is exceptionally run-down and in need of significant renovations. It is located off of the main thoroughfare, so traffic is constant and loud. Train tracks are steps away which adds to the noise level. The room overwhelmingly smelled of mold. It was also outdated, with chipped, cheap cabinetry, mold in the bathroom, stains on the ceiling, and a very uncomfortable bed. From some angles, the hotel can technically claim ocean views, but it's a stretch to call it that. It's far away and mostly obscured by other buildings. The Continental breakfast has poor selections and stale food. It's served in a moldy-smelling room at the pool. The pool is tiny. 10 people in the pool made it crowded. The main reason we checked out after 24 hours was because of the horrid mold smell. read more

This hotel is very run down. We had to change rooms because our first room, Room 201, smelled very strongly of mildew and mold. It made us feel sick within minutes. In our new room, Room 206, the television frequently would not work. The shower leaks all over the floor because there is no seal. The only redeeming feature is the location and the partial view of the ocean. But overall, I would say this feels like a $60 a night hotel, not the the $200+ we paid. They run out of breakfast and when you try to talk to Michelle at the front desk about how unacceptable the service is, she just says "this is the front desk. I feel like you just need to vent. This isn't going anywhere" and laughs before she transfers you. She even told me all of the options they had for breakfast and said they don't run out. Until I told her they did and she said oh your dad must have gotten down here right before it closed. He didn't. So, basically lied. You just told me you don't run out. And now when I try to call back I keep getting hung up on or sent to voicemail before anyone even gets on the line. Absolutely unacceptable service. read more

What luck. I thought this is going to be a less admirable stay but it turned out to be wonderful. Save some of the obnoxious people at breakfast and at the pool, it was a perfectly fine. We went for the king suite and found that the room was much larger than we had originally anticipated. Seriously, you could've easily fit about 20 adults in there! And we had a kitchenette area with a sink, a two burner stove top and microwave. They told us we were supposed to have a toaster oven but there was no oven in the room. And while the hotel staff said that there was no view of the ocean, we did get a little bit of the view, which was a nice surprise. But those two glitches aside, the room was fabulous. That bed was amazing! Nice, soft and huge. The room service was quick to take care of our issues, whether it was that we needed towels for the pool or we needed general room service. Sometimes it was a bit too quick. And another bonus was that there was breakfast served daily. Eggs, bacon, waffles, cereal, yogurt, etc. A full on hot breakfast. Even had juice. But we found the eggs and bacon were somewhat strange. Both tasted perfectly fine but it seemed as though they weren't actually real eggs and bacon. Hard to describe it. The pool is a nice size in the staff keep it pretty clean. There is sand in the Jacuzzi, but it's not that big of a deal, especially after coming off of the beach. One thing about that though, getting to the beach is somewhat of a trek. This hotel is only about three blocks from the beach, but it is over some hills and after spending several hours running around the beach and in the water, it might be too much of a walk for some to make it back. But, in all, excellent experience. It's not super fancy. It's not outlandish. Expect to deal with some screaming kids and obnoxious adults from time to time. But overall I give it a high rating and look forward to coming back. read more

Found this gem while driving down the coast. A great hotel for the money. The rooms were clean and rather large. The bed was super comfortable and the patio had an amazing view of the ocean. The lobby was clean and had coffee and lemon ice water available all day. Close to beaches, great food and good shopping. read more

I have read some of the other reviews but haven't had the same issues. So far it has been clean and the front desk staff is friendly and helpful. The hotel is old and a bit weird in its design and layout. Rooms have been updated and are fine. The floor is all vinyl and tile so if you stay in winter months wear socks or bring slippers as it's cold. Also the lack of carpet makes it noisy. Some rooms may have an ocean view but I had to go on the balcony and lean far to the right to get a view. Aside from the train station being one street away and the noise from the train horns it was comfortable. Much better towels than most hotels!!! Probably the only complaint I would have is the housekeeping should wipe he back of the bathroom door. The steam makes the fire alarm go off so the hotel requested the bathroom door stay closed for showers. That's fine but all the steam drips down the door leaving it dirty and that's where the towel hook is. All in an ok place to stay. read more

This is probably the Worst Best Western we've ever patronized. Stay Away! It all started with the 800# reservations staff messing up our booking - showing us arriving a day earlier than I requested . (I called at 9pm from several hundred miles away and they booked us in for that very night and the next 4 - instead of five nights starting the next day as requested). When we arrived the next day, the front desk person had us a 'no-show' and refused to do anything to fix the mistake. We were told only the manager could remedy the situation and they never knew when he would be there. The corporate 800# people said they could not do anything about it either. This was despite me sending them a screenshot of the reservation I made while on the original phone call. The manager never made an effort to contact us over the 5 days we were there and anytime I asked to see him, he was not in. Corporate did offer to review the recording of the phone call but it would take 24-72 'working hours' (what does that even mean?) to listen to the 3 minute phone call. Meanwhile we had been charged almost $200 for a night we did not use. After 3 days, they determined it was their mistake and offered 10,000 points as compensation. They would also send us a check to refund the no-show night. That will take 3 weeks. Meantime we were charged immediately for the unbooked (by them) 5th night! I advised the supervisor who made the oh-so generous 10,000 point offer that this particular hotel charged 28,000 point for a 1 night stay. It would have been so much easier to transfer the 1st night payment to the 5th night but both BW corporate and the property refused to do that. ALSO, they BOTH charged the 5th night to our credit card (currently under dispute). Now I will describe the hotel itself. I am sure after reading this you would rather sleep on the beach than stay in this well located but smelly, run down place. They even put out frozen muffins on their very inadequate free breakfast bar. The towels are threadbare, electrical outlets need to be found and then tested to see if they actually work, 2 other guests complained about broken TV sets, large unpainted sections of the walls, a musty smell throughout and no water pressure in the shower. I could go on but I think you get the drift. After I filled out BW's online survey, this is the only response I received - from the property manager but as you can see from the signature line - there is no name for this person - just a / (even the sender's name on the email was a slash: _____________________________________________________________________ Thank you for completing the survey regarding your recent stay at our property. On behalf of our entire team, I would like to apologize for not exceeding your expectations. On our second day after returning to our DIRTY room, we were told curtly by Front Desk clerk, "You have to ask for housekeeping" - NEVER were we asked at check-in if we wanted housekeeping. NEVER was it mentioned in our BW pre-check-in email that housekeeping was BY REQUEST ONLY. When I mentioned our disappointment to Desk Clerk on our checkout she mumbled "I'll pass it on". So disappointed in lack of amenities in the room (no towel racks- no extra pillows!) but mostly the ATTITUDE of Staff and Manager. A simple "I'm sorry for the misunderstanding" goes a long way but they didn't really care if we enjoyed our stay or not. I gave it 2 stars because the mattress was comfortable. This hotel is big disappointment for Best Western brand. It's required better maintenance and more professional housekeeping. The trash cans wasn't emptied on time, always overflowing, the coffee spill around it was never cleaned up ( it's finally dry out in few days, yaks). This place with amazing location, spacious rooms and balconies with gorgeous sunset view has such a great potential. Such a shame that the owner doesn't invest in it read more
