I have been terrified to go to the dentist every time I go. I have had several bad experiences…read more Paris reached out to me after seeing a Facebook post I made about the dentist, and she scheduled me an appointment. Upon my arrival I was very nervous and shaken up; they relieved me of my misery, and my appointment went very smoothly. I then came to my second appointment, and Paris and Dr. Chapman were very efficient, very fast, and very knowledgeable. They definitely changed my view of the dentist, and the fear I had is no longer there. The staff at the front desk was even amazing. All around I had a wonderful experience with them, and I am excited to start my journey with them for a forever home for a dentist.

My experience with Toothsome Dental had been positive until this incident…read more I scheduled an appointment for my daughter expecting she would receive a basic cleaning, which my dental insurance confirmed is covered at 100%. At no point when I made the appointment, checked in, or before treatment began was I informed that, because she had not been seen in over two years, the visit would be coded differently, resulting in an unexpected bill. After speaking with my insurance company, I was told that a basic cleaning is covered at 100% and that the billing code submitted by Toothsome Dental is what caused my financial responsibility. When I spoke with the hygienist, Christina, I was told there was nothing they could do because my daughter had not been seen in over two years. I was also told that the office was not obligated to inform patients how services are coded or whether those codes would affect the cost. As a single parent, surprise medical and dental bills matter. If I had been told beforehand that the visit would be coded differently and could result in additional charges, I would have had the opportunity to decide whether to proceed or seek care elsewhere. What makes this most frustrating is the complete lack of transparency. In my opinion, this felt like a money grab. If Toothsome Dental believes it is not obligated to tell patients when they are changing the coding in a way that increases the patient's financial responsibility, then I do not feel obligated to pay for charges that I was never informed about or given the opportunity to accept beforehand. Patients deserve to know when a change in coding could cost them money before treatment begins, not months later when a bill arrives. I initially chose Toothsome Dental because I wanted to support a Black-owned business. Unfortunately, after this experience, my daughter and I will not be returning. I hope they change their policy and begin informing patients before treatment when a visit will be coded differently and may result in out-of-pocket costs so patients can make an informed financial decision.
