He really takes the time to explain everything to you and he gives wonderful advice about keeping your body aligned properly and correcting the issues that you may have. I'd think of him as my wellness/muscle doctor now. He investigates and works every inch. Since then I've returned to address some back pain and foot pain. Yes, I am falling part. Long story short, everything has improved if not completely diminished. Phillip really is as good as it gets. His work is intuitive and very personalized. I rarely see anyone else, if I can help it. I've been working with Phillip for 3-4 years. I've received a good number of massages over the years, especially working as a Spa Manager. From very high-end spas to smaller foot spas, I have never had a massage therapist as INTUITIVE as Phillip. Although we will always chat about my issues before every session, he really doesn't need to be told what the problems are. His hands are so in tune with the body musculature, he will find the littlest thing out of place. Our last session, he found spots on my hips that were truly bugging me- I would have never realized it. He could easily pinpoint which vertebra the problems were stemming from. I go through periods of severe tension headaches, caused by my neck muscles. He never fails to fix those headaches, and no therapist has ever worked on my neck as thoroughly as he does. I think Phillip's strength comes from his east-meets-west approach. Although the massage feels Western, his knowledge of Chinese medicine, energy work and aromatherapy really round out the session. It is never the same massage twice- it is always completely customized to my needs of that day. The pressure is always perfect for me- firm, getting the work DONE, but never to the point of pain. Phil is amazing! Not only does he genuinely care about helping you, he has the knowledge and skill to actually make you feel better. I've been to many massages ranging from your run of the mill cheap foot massages to highly specialized massage therapists who can heal you and I can say Phil ranks among the best. What I like about his style is that it is both relaxing and therapeutic. He will hit spots that feel painful in a good way, help you stretch really tight muscles, do traditional cupping, and he even iced my sprained ankle as it was still inflamed. I am a fairly active clumsy person and I am talented at putting myself through a lot of minor injuries. I have repeatedly sprained my ankle from swing dancing and tripping while walking. Recently, I managed to strain my lower back by excessive dancing and weight lifting (I never learn, do I?). Standing up, bending down, or even getting out of my bed was accompanied by incessant groaning. Two weeks has passed and I was still in constant pain. I looked through Yelp for massage places and found Phillip. Scheduling appointment with him through Yelp was a breeze. Phillip was very friendly and professional-- we discussed about my problem areas and he focused working on them. And ahh --such sweet sweet soreness! Phillip was amazing at identifying tight spots and applying various pressure to loosen up my muscles. I also appreciate his knowledge of both western and eastern techniques. After two sessions, my lower back's pain and soreness had significantly lessened. He also pointed out other areas that I did not previously notice were problematic and started to do some preventative work on them. I am rarely moved to write a review, but my experience with Phillip was so transformative that I just had to say something. As a yoga practitioner and instructor, I'm well aware of the tensions that can build up in the body and the power of massage, but have relied on self-massage with foam rollers and trigger point tools, thinking it was enough. But a nagging shoulder injury left me unable to move as I usually do, and my shoulder was starting to get worse -- and weak, despite my best attempts to treat it and work it out on my own. A coworker finally convinced me to see Phillip, about whom she couldn't say enough good things: a total pro, possessed of the magic touch, and a wizard with the body. She wasn't kidding. I briefly described my shoulder issues and Phillip asked me to make several discrete arm movements while he assessed my level of bodily discomfort. Once I got on the table it didn't take him long to discern my other physical issues -- he could tell at a touch that I slouch and spend hours sitting at a desk. He was able to get under my stuck scapula and freed up the problem shoulder so that I could move without pain for the first time in many weeks, and also got into my hips and lower back, finding spots of extreme tightness that I hadn't even realized I had. I walked out feeling utterly pliable and blissful, like a rubbery gummy worm. In addition, he gave me stretches and exercises to do at home. My muscles were truly worked on in a way that I haven't experienced before, and I've had numerous massages at some very fancy-pants high-end spas. Phillip's work is beyond that -- it's truly tailored to you and your needs, and his skill and knowledge means that he can figure out your issues even if you can't well articulate them. The body does not lie. I will be returning on a regular basis, for I know that my problem areas will need additional work, but even if they didn't, I will go back as regularly as I can. A massage from Phillip is a wise investment in self-care, and I have been singing his praises to my friends and family ever since my experience with Phillip. I just returned from another incredible massage experience with Philip. He is awesome! I have had many massages in many parts of the world. Philip is by far the best. He is truly gifted, very skilled, and generous with his time and knowledge. I am overjoyed he is in Pasadena, but I swear I would travel great distances to see him. I first went to him with serious "computer neck" issues. I was so sore and stiff from all the time I was spending at work in front of a computer. I worked with him regularly and soon I had greater mobility and no longer had the awful spasm that ran from my neck and down my shoulder. As a former long distance runner, I am very tight in my hips and hamstrings. Besides massage work, Philip has provided me with simple exercises and stretches to loosen things up. Phillip is an amazing physical therapist; very knowledgeable and far more educated on the physical anatomy than any other masseuse I have ever been treated by. I have been going to him for a few years,but felt compelled to add my review after he has been working intensely on my hand/thumb after undergoing a complicated surgery on my right/dominant thumb after surgery to remove an arthritic joint at base of thumb and replace with transplant of forearm tendon, carpal tunnel release and excision of a ganglion cyst on wrist. I developed Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome 4 weeks after surgery and my hand swelled up to the size of a snow mitten. In addition to therapy by two certified hand specialists,I have been visiting Phillip 3x a week as he is better than the two therapists is "pushing" the edema through the lymphatic nodes in my wrist, arm and shoulder. He took it upon himself to learn the intricacies of the tendons, nerve paths and muscle structure of the hand and thumb. He would methodically need and manipulate each tendon and nerve ending. The pain in my hand has been excruciating and my post operative recovery far worse than I could have ever anticipated. My only salvation has been the ability to have Phillip work his magic which "unlocks" the constrictions in my hand. I have probably 3 more months of agony before I regain full use of my hand. God willing I do recover, it will be largely the result of Phillip's mastery. Finally, I must also add that Phillip is a good man with a big heart. Today my hand was hurting so much that I was nauseous from the pain and I forgot that I had a 2:00 appointment with Phillip. He called me at 2:25pm to check on me and I asked him to just forfeit my pre-paid appointment. Phillip refused and encouraged me to come over so he could help reduce the edema and "unlock" my hand. When I did come over, he spent an hour working on me even though he was running late on his plans to to take his wife two small children out on a Saturday night to see Disney on Ice.Phill cares that much for his patients.. I went to see Phillip with a nagging injury that wouldn't heal. I had tried everything. Stretching, massage, soaking, ice and even ballet. Nothing would alleviate the pain of my adductor. I finally followed my friend's recommendation and made an appointment with Phillip. It was a very intense, therapeutic massage. Deep breathing was essential! And was it worth it! His detailed knowledge of anatomy allowed him to get to the root of the problem and work deeply to release the muscle. I was sore the next day but followed his advice with icing and stretching. Yeah, I like to squirm a little (a little!), and he knows how to dial it right in!
