A few years ago when my wife and I decided to have solar panels installed we did what many probably do which is to ask your friends which company they used for theirs. As it turned out we had more than a few of our friends sing the praises of Energy Saving Pros. Before we knew it Energy Saving Pros representative Barry McGinnis, AKA Barry the Solar Guy, was in our house showing a diagram of what our system would look like when installed. In a couple short months we were enjoying the benefits of solar. Barry, undoubtedly busy throughout his day, has never failed once to return a phone call or text message to answer any question. The service that Energy Saving Pros provide to their potential and existing customers is top tier. Energy Saving Pros also does roof repair as well. We had quite a bit of rain last year which exposed a leak in our roof. We gave Energy Saving Pros a call and a knowledgeable and professional crew showed up and made the repair in a few hours time. Needless to say I would highly recommend this amazing company. read more

In June 2025, I decided to add two FranklinWH home batteries to replace a dead battery. I hired Energy Saving Pros (ESP) over a couple other bidders because their salesperson was knowledgeable, friendly, and transparent. He spent an hour on site with me explaining placement, permitting, and expected timelines (45-60 days.) Based on that professionalism, I paid two-thirds of the $31K project cost upfront. Unfortunately, everything collapsed once the contract was signed. Permitting delays: ESP blamed them on the City for months. After three months of this, I contacted the City myself, and the plan reviewer told me ESP had submitted invalid designs multiple times, including use of non-approved equipment. Even after being notified they were proposing unapproved equipment, ESP resubmitted their plans without fixing the issue. Utility coordination: the City told me they needed interconnection approval from the local utility; when I contacted the utility, they confirmed ESP had never contacted them for interconnection approval. (This is three months after I'd signed paperwork and sent funds.) Poor communication: I made repeated friendly requests to ESP for updates, which were responded to with "we're trying, it's the City's delay." After contacting the City myself and finding out that the submitted plans were repeatedly wrong - and the utility hadn't even been reached out to yet - I wrote a more formal (exasperated but still friendly) email detailing what I'd found; this email went unanswered for days. After turning up my volume and explaining I was upset in a followup email, the company owner wrote me a brief reply that contained no apology - and addressed me as "Mark." (Narrator voice: "My name is not Mark.") OK, plans are now approved, after my intervention. It'll be smooth from here on out, right? (Narrator voice: "Nope.") Installation delays: I was originally told installation was a one- to two-day job. It stretched to four days because on day one, I found out from the installer that ESP had only sent him, rather than the regular two-person team. That worker was professional and hard-working, but he had no support, and the timeframe doubled. I was not told about this in advance, and had to stay home from the office for a couple extra days to manage home access for the installer. Again - no acknowledgement or apology from the company owner. Broken promises: after I started complaining to the owner and the salesperson, the salesperson promised me a meaningful discount for the extensive delays and for me doing their permitting work with the City. But wait - the salesperson quit or was dismissed from the company a couple days before the installation. When I was called for payment for the full amount, I called the owner and reminded him of what his salesperson had told me. He offered to "take a couple hundred bucks" off the $31K job - that's less than one percent. (I'm a company owner, and when my company messes up, we proactively offer meaningful discounts, because that's the right thing to do.) Offended. I declined his "discount," and immediately paid him in full - and also immediately started thinking about how to write this review. OK, we're paid. We just need an inspection. That'll go smoothly, right? (Narrator voice: "Me again? Oh no...") Inspection scheduling: ESP failed to schedule the final City inspection with me. I found out about it only when the installer texted me from my driveway, saying "I'm here and the inspector will be here soon." I suppose I was fortunate to have been home at the time. And, of course, the inspector found that ESP had not followed their own plans, and failed my house. Three weeks later, when ESP finally fixed their errors and I passed the inspection, I was again not given notice of when they'd be arriving, causing me to cancel appointments to be at home for the inspection. (And the tech that arrived smelled strongly of cigarettes and alcohol when he appeared at 8:30am - not who you want representing you to the public. I don't think he was actively intoxicated, but I don't think he'd tried to repair his previous night's choices before arriving at my doorstep, unannounced.) So, to sum up: contract signed and $$$ sent in June. Their installation finally approved by the inspector in ... NOVEMBER. Months of delays caused by ineptitude. No acknowledgement of dropped balls by company owner. Let me be clear: the FranklinWH batteries I was sold are superb - reliable hardware, easy-to-use app, and great performance. But Energy Saving Pros' management was appalling, disorganized, dismissive, and unprofessional. The company owner is running a terrible ship; their post-sales lack of communication, repeated plan errors, and refusal to be accountable made this the single most frustrating and aggravating vendor experience of my lifetime. Tony led me through numerous tests and situations to resolve the problem. Even after we hung up, Tony had resolved the issue remotely. IMO, he went above and beyond his duties to help me. We have had the Solar Edge Inverter fail twice since our system was installed four years ago. While I'm not happy with the equipment failures, ESP was quick to get replacement units ordered and installed, the first time at no charge, and the second at a reduced labor rate. Had my inverter fail so I called them to replace it. Everyone was helpful and seemed eager and happy to help. They got my new unit ordered and once it arrived were quick to fit me into an appointment to get it installed. The crew that came to install it was very nice and helpful. The crew even went the extra mile to help install a Ethernet cord on my unit so I could get it online! We have had no issues with the product, and they have been working great ever since and their customer service and their follow up is excellent.. Our pool solar started leaking and I asked Energy Saving Pros to come look at our system (that they installed) and see if they could fix the problem. Xavier took a look and said that 3 boots needs to be replaced but he only had 2 in his truck so he would have to come back. He also told me that our roof was a mess, 25 or more cracked tiles that need to be replaced and a possible situation where one tile has been moved and dry rot could be happening but wouldn't know more until he looked into it further when he comes back. He said he would send me a quote through email and that I should schedule his to come back ASAP before the rain starts. He also asked what my husband does and I didn't see why that was relevant but I told him. I received a quote for $800 for the solar to be fixed and $3800 for the rest of the roof to be fixed (this did include a gutter) but a previous roofer gave me a quote for the gutter and it was $1200. I thought this was very high and almost payed to get the solar fixed. I contacted a couple different companies and Aztec came out for a second option. Aztec fixed our leaking solar for $85!!! He said, the boots just need to be tightened and he also saw a couple tiles that needed to be pushed back in (which he did and glued them) and said the roof looks perfect! I had my solar installed June 28, 2014. It is a 9.275 kilowatt system. It has been in and working great. I have seen my first PG&E since the install and I already have a credit. This process began in January with 8 companies coming by to give me bids. Out of the 8, 6 of the companies were out of the running right away. I had 2 remaining companies that I invited over to discuss their company further. It was through this process that I decided to go with energy saving pros. They were very flexible with the install and had a very reasonable price. I was working with a sales person named Barry. He was outstanding. He answered his phone 90% of the time right away and the other 10% he called back within 30 minutes. On the day of the install I was out with the crew. I have a construction back ground so I very interested in the work they did on my house. I have nothing but good to say about their installers. They were very professional. I was very impressed with the work the electricians did. They made a clean install in and out of my attic. Everything they did was top notch. When the inspector came out from the county, he made several comments on how impressed he was with the install. I do not right many reviews, but in this case I feel it was well worth it. I have recommended this company to several of my friends who are using them for solar. A solid company to use for solar!!! UPDATE: My system has been in for over 2 years now, so I thought I would give a review of its operation. I have not had an energy bill to date. One of the only complaints I have is the way PGE puts information on their statements. You really need to take a long look to figure it out. I get up on my roof every couple of months and clean the panels. I live out in the country and they seem to get a good amount of dust built up. It seems to help and keep the production up. I have referred this company to several friends and they have installed systems with positive results. If you are in the market for a system, my recommendation is to call a couple of companies to give you bids and then call Energy saving pros. read more

The process for us was long, from contract (24 Aug) to installation (started 30 Oct), although not full fault of ESP, it is one of the reasons for knocking off a star. Brian at the office is great to work with, he is the boss yet it feels so right talking to him or asking advice. He does his best to answer all my questions patiently and worked through with me several issues that I had during the process. Kelly, the financial person, is also nice to work with, another person you can count on when you have questions! I am recommending ESP to all my 52 neighbors who have yet PV solar installed because I am a believer of solar products. 30 Oct, Tuesday, was removal of my 6 old pool solar panels, and, first phase of PV solar installation, 8 hours. It was pleasant working with theses guys- Cameron, Raymond, and Cain. Raymond was patient to note some changes I like made on the solar placement on the roof, he very quickly had it resolved, he also with the knowledge of my roof gave me a sound advice as to how my new pool solar should be placed. Then it was Cameron. Upon my request, he agreed to place the inverter higher than he usually would, after it was installed onto the wall when I realized it was not at the height as we have first agreed plus the leveler showed it was a little tilted, Cameron took extra time and effort to rectify these issues quickly, making sure the inverter as a long term fixture in my home is a constant pleasant reminder of how he had made it right for my home. A total of 6 men worked, although I didn't get to know all their names individually, they all worked hard and well with one another, such spirit is important and you know when they work well together means they do better installation. 31 Oct, Wednesday, Cameron came back out to finish the wiring, 2-3 hours, I am please to have him around working on my property. 1st Nov, Thursday, Cain, Colby, and Raymond came back to install 6 of the new 12' pool solar panels. Good was that, Cain helped to pour some flex material onto a hole in the gutter. 5 Nov, Monday, Travis came out to install the attic fan which the earlier team missed to install, and to meet the county officer to have the solar plan approved. Unfortunately, my inverter had been upgraded to the 7600 series but the plan still shows 3800 series, the county officer could not approve the plan. Travis went into the attic, we got the best spot we thought the attic fan should get installed at. Travis left to quickly have the changed plan paper work submitted, he's coming come back another day to install the attic fan when he'd meet the county officer again. 8 Nov, Thursday, is when John, the pool man, is coming to install the new variable speed pool pump and new pool monitoring equipment. I've also ordered on the side an auto vacation pool filler. Energy Saving Pro has some excellent staff at-hand whom deserve a commendation even if its on YELP for going #AboveAndBeyond Quick Background: I was part of the Sun Edison Bankruptcy debacle; when I got my solar panels (3yrs ago) about 2 days from being installed; they filed BK. Hence, leaving us on the lurch with SP that are new but not activated. For 3 years we tried to have Sun Edison pick up the non activated panels but they refused since they were in BK Status. So here we had brand new panels that were never turned on. As we began the process to put our home on the market, we hit a bump because of the solar panels not being turned on and no owners. After getting it squared away with Sun Edison's BK Lawyers; we were now sole owners of the Panel. However, NO ONE such as Vivint Solar, SolarCity, Sacramento Solar Company, Unisun would help us get our solar panels turned on. They stated they can't because they were not the providers of the panels. Literally, all of the 4 companies mentioned above suggested we get new ones that they can remove my current ones and replace with theirs. I felt as though they just wanted to make another sale. Essentially, we as homeowners were at our wits-end until google search brought me to Energy Savings Pro. I said, let's try this last one even though I went in with a pessimistic mentality; I was willing to give it one last try and left them a message. #CrossingFingers I received a call from Aaron M. and upon explaining my situation; Energy Savings Pro were the ONLY ONEs willing to come to my home and inspect the panels and see what they can do to assist us. In less than a week, Aaron M. had someone over our house inspecting the solar panels and deemed the panels to be in good condition. While that was happening; Aaron and his great Team of staff such as Tony G. & Rachel T were a tremendous help in assisting us resolve this matter quickly. After the inspector gave us the green light; Aaron M. and his staff ensured that SMUD was also part of this process as they would need to put their meter as well in order to complete this process. In essence, they took control over the process as though we were one of their clients. Energy Savings Pro is definitely a company I would recommend since they have a customer value system in place even when you're not a customer; so what does that say about them? Nowadays, it is hard to find people with good customer services etiquette and empathy. All I have to say is, Energy Savings Pro went above and beyond more than we can ever imagine from emailing SMUD, to calling places for us, and inspecting back and forth to ensure we were good to go as well as activation complete. While all the other solar companies wanted me to purchase a new 20K equipment, Energy Savings Pro only asked us to pay them for their time, which I found to be worth every penny since now our panels are turned on because of Energy Savings Pros; hence, increasing the value of our property rather than hindering it as it was prior to finding Energy Savings Pro. Therefore, because of their due diligence in assisting us when no one else did, we felt they deserve a review on YELP. I will definitely referral/recommend this company FIRST if you are considering Solar Panels; they even do home insulation & LED Retro-Fitting. #LayawayPlansAvailable. Once We settle into out new home; we are definitely considering them for our SP. They also have an awesome rewards program that can help you towards your panels. It's a large investment to buy a solar system for your house. That is why I spent time investigating the variables and the questions to ask before selecting a company. There's a lot of good information online (i.e. energysage) and your friends and neighbors also have some great advice on questions to ask up front. I assembled about 20 questions dealing with warranty, materials used, installation, experience, certifications, etc. and sent my questions to a few solar companies. The sales manager at ESP sent me back a curt message saying they would pass on the project. What? I asked what the problem was and he proceeded to tell me that it wasn't in their process to answer such questions up front. Apparently questions about what materials they use and their efficiency, the warranty and such was too much "in the weeds" for them. It boiled down to them assuming that if a prospect asks questions (really, pretty easy questions) that they will be hard to work with and the company doesn't want their business. This manager said that asking detailed (and general) questions up front represented a "classic red flag" warning. This is THE MOST BIZARRE thing I have ever dealt with in my life! It certainly implies that they are hiding something and don't want you to compare with others. He went on to say that these 20 questions represented a preview of more questions that I may have along the way that will "get in the way of us doing our jobs". Excuse me, a customer can't ask questions up front nor along the way??? This is NOT the DNA of a company I want to do business with. Finally, here is a quote from him, made in his closing line: "I want to wish you well, I know there's a company out there, hurting for business, that will be happy to get into the weeds with you, and then not deliver." This elitist attitude and unbelievable handling of a prospect really showed me a great reason for not going further with ESP. *Note: Jack is lying in his response. I never asked for a serial number. I asked questions straight from independent online sources. He calls questions about the efficiency of his panels and their warranty to be too micro. I was asking as a prospective buyer and was treated terribly. BTW, the second company already issued their answers timely and professionally. Finally, my reviews are never "retaliatory" but are a true reflection (good or bad) of the service I received from Jack C . **Note: We just selected Magic Sun Solar - What a great company. Answered all our questions. Great panels (both Panasonic and LG) and they use state of the art micro-inverters! What a complete opposite sales approach they use. They were helpful, answered questions and even used their Solar Eye to predict the sun exposure across various positions on the roof. We felt like they really wanted our business. Energy Saving Pros is a MUST-use business. I scoured Yelp a few weeks ago because we had to get our home energy-efficient, and stop paying hundreds of dollars to PG&E every month. We wanted a local company, and one that was highly endorsed by customers. Energy Saving Pros who also added top-level products, exceptional customer care, and questions that were answered quickly and clearly. And their prices were fantastic (but don't worry, because they offer financing if you need it!). Today was our install day -- solar panels and all that comes with them; whole house fan; and attic fan; (our insulation upgrade comes tomorrow). It was 100+ degrees out (can't even imagine the temperature on the roof and in the attic!) and it was a massive job, yet the never complained, nor shirked from the job. They were worked in tandem and, though the site was abuzz with activity, they worked tirelessly, adeptly, and were always friendly. Further, it was obvious they knew what they were doing, and that customer satisfaction was their goal. It looks so good -- conduit hidden in the attic; gorgeous and sleek panels; inverter box well placed. They go above and beyond the norm, of that I am sure! HUGE thanks to: Travis H., Scott J., Michael N., Mark, Jason, Alberto, and Cameron. We are incredibly grateful for your knowledge, skills, and work ethic. Energy Saving Pros (ESP) installed an additional group of panels on our roof a little over seven years ago. While the work they did then was fine, last year I called them about our true up with PG&E being so high. They came and checked and replaced one panel on their system and when I asked them to check the inverter for the original unit, they said it would take someone else from their office to do so and said they'd follow up. We never heard from ESP and health issues kept us from following up. Almost two months ago I called ESP's office to pursue getting them out to check the inverter in question and was told I would need to pay a service fee of $99, which was reasonable. and it would be two weeks before a tech could be out. After not hearing from them, I called 3 weeks later and was told someone would be out the following week and the cost would be $225. When I questioned what happened to the $99 she said she'd check with owner and get back to me and she had me text her a photo of the inverter in question, which I did. As you guessed, I've never heard from them again. In the meantime, I contacted Capitol City Solar (CCS) who agree to come take a look but that it would be at least two weeks. No problem there as we've waited so long for ESP. A tech was out today, exactly 2 weeks after my call and guess what. The original inverter was not fully functioning due to a loose cable in a connection box that could have only happened when ESP installed the newer system. Huh, makes me wonder if they didn't know this was their problem and thus not willing to come check the system for me. I paid more to have CCS come but feel it was well worth it. If you want follow up with your solar system, I'd avoid ESP and go with Capitol City Solar. read more

If I could give -1 I would. I don't know how this company has 5 stars! Out of 10 companies I've called over the last few months this was THE WORST! I'm very easy to deal with, friendly type of guy but this company has gone far enough to push my buttons. I had to call them 3 TIMES, not once but 3 times in 1 week to ask when someone was going to call me because I had left my name with the front desk lady. Each time I was promised someone would call me back by the end of the day. Well it took 3 calls to finally get someone to call me. Dan finally called me, all I remember is all the BS he fed me......does he not think people go online and read and educate themselves? Some of the ridiculous stuff that came out of his mouth were absurd. Here's the best part as per Dan he was selling me poly panels because All manufactures were moving away from Mono panels. Either he's the biggest Bs'r or has NO clue what he's talking about. Well after speaking with him and then informing what type of system I was looking for and my usage etc.. he said he'd call my by Friday which was the next day. Today is SATURDAY not a single call...btw I just checked my voicemail and call logs on my cell phone to be sure I didn't miss a call and I was right...NOT A SINGLE CALL BACK... But hey thanks guys for passing me up we signed today with a local installer to have a Solarworld 8.55kw system for a FANTASTIC $/per watt price!!! The best part is this installer has great reviews and live right down the street and came the same day later in the evening after I called him! I had been looking at getting solar for about 3 years. My husband always said no because the the outrages costs of actually getting it. My husband is a finance guy so all of the numbers had to make sense or he was an firm "NO" ...I had met with about 6 other companies and then I found Barry! Barry came prepared...he was able to answer all of my husbands questions. He beat the next best bid by over $12,000 yes...12 THOuSAND DOLLARS! Barry was not pushy, he did not say "if you don't sign the contract today the price wont be available tomorrow "(can't tell you how many other companies I heard that from) Energy Saving Pros had the solar on my house 2 weeks after I signed the contract, not the 2-3 months like the other companies were quoting! I am so happy with our system! I love the additional insurance of knowing that if any of the companies that make any of the parts on the panel go out of business, there is Zurich Insurance to step in and take care of everything! I have peace of mind. In the first month we had our inverter malfunction. I called Barry he came that day to assess the situation. The next day I had my new inverter installed! Wow! Researching solar options can be very confusing for the novice with so many options and sales tactics used by various companies. Four months ago we moved into a larger single fam home in Rocklin, CA (Whitney Ranch subdivision) and was concerned with our PG&E bill. I researched with 3 other solar companies about buying, leasing or PPA options and was surprised to see a large differences in pricing. We recently got solar and a new HVAC system with new ducting. We went through Energy Saving Pros and dealt directly with Jack and Tracy Cremer, and Mike who is in charge of the HVAC. Our 10.6kwh system is up an running as of February 2016! I received 3 quotes and chose Energy Savings Pros because it was the most reasonable and because of the positive reviews on Yelp. Overall the project went smoothly. There was a minor hiccup that caused the installation date to be pushed a week because the solar panels listed in our contract were unavailable; however, ESP upgraded us to a better panel at no cost. The installers were very friendly and professional and our project manager, Arthur, was honest and was always accessible via text or phone call. I have already recommended ESP to my brother, who is looking to install this year, and will continue to recommend to friends and family. read more

What an all around amazing experience. I was looking for a concept like this in the beginning of my search, someone who would help me make my house more energy efficient and not just sell me gobs of solar panels. We had a hiccup with our sales guy in the beginning but it was quickly resolved and we went straight through the owner Brian. They installed the whole house fan, solar attic fan, and 25 panels within I 2 weeks of signing our contract. I would highly recommend this company over the other 8 I interviewed. I interviewed 4 companies, and by far, Barry McGinnis of ESP was the most knowledgeable and thorough of the 4 reps I met. We chose ESP mostly for that reason. The bid was the second best we received, But Barry's expertise made me feel like ESP really knew what they were doing. The install went fine, but a last minute plan revision caused a delay with the Rocklin City Building department completing the final inspection. The city blamed ESP, but after talking to ESP's office manager Hannah, it was clear that the city was grossly at fault. I was amazed at Hannah's thoroughness and attention to detail. Everything on our project was thoroughly logged and documented. Hannah pulled up these details instantly. Everything about ESP was great from beginning to end! They have been great to work with. They were not high pressure like a few of my other quotes. They came in very competitively priced and will match prices if you can find anyone that can beat them. They are way better priced than going through Costco and they do a great job. The guys that came out are clean cut, professional, and polite. My wife had no issue being there alone with the work crew. They installed our solar and a whole house fan. Very happy with both. The only complaint is that it took a couple weeks longer than we had been told, to get everything through approval and to get on the install calendar. The install was done in a day and they fixed some broken roof tiles while up there. They got the inspection done and set up with PG&E all done within about a week of the install. Clearly they know the business as I have heard that some companies take a few weeks. If you have PG&E do your self a favor and at least get a quote from ESP. It will surprise you how fast the break even point is and the team will treat you well. read more

Well, I've waited over a year to write my review. I wanted to make sure everything was stable before I did as there were some initial issues. The sales rep (Paul) was great. He was low key and helpful throughout the installation. The install crew was hit and miss with me. This was a ground level installation on a hillside, however, the crew showed up and leveled the hillside before the foreman opened the plans. I was talking with him when he opened up the plans and exclaimed, ooooooh sh#t. I asked him what was up and he told me he hadn't looked at the plans yet. At this point, the posts were in concrete and the racking was going on. I called Paul with my concerns and he told me to tell them to change it. It took about two hours of debating with the foreman to get them to change it. He would call the engineer and debate then debate with me some more. Essentially, they took too much hillside away so they needed to raise the installation up to make up for the now lowered hillside or I would have had less sunshine on the panels. So I told the foreman one last time and that he can explain why I won't be paying for the second half of the job if it's not installed as per our contract. I shouldn't have had to deal with this issue but stuff happens, I figure it's just one issue so on we go. Then there was the inverter. Basically, they installed a bad one. Not their fault, it's the factory that made it. So I call and get an appointment in a couple of days with Tony. Tony tries to fix it but can't. It wouldn't send data and it would overheat and just shut down randomly. This goes on for almost three months. I'm checking it all day. I'm shooting video of the inverter failing. I call tony, I call Paul, I call solar edge... tony comes out and tries to fix it... Can't fix it. Three months this continues. I PAID $42,000 CASH FOR THIS? I call ESP and get a receptionist. No one is available but, to her credit, she senses something is going horribly wrong and unbeknownst to me, tells the owner, Wayne. Meanwhile, I sit down and have a heart to heart. How important is this? How much are we willing to spend on an attorney? We decide it's time to get an attorney and take legal action. We're going to have to sue. Then, that evening, the phone rings and it's Wayne. He doesn't seem to have any idea of what had been occurring. I explain and vent. He says, well I've got three of these inverters on the shelf. I can just replace that unit. I'm like, so why haven't you!? I tell him we just spent $80 on our first call to an attorney and ask why it has to come to this in order to receive good service? I paid cash. Is that the problem? If I had financed I could just refuse to make payments until it were fixed. Wayne explains that their friend and electrician just passed away and that's why. I pointed out that this went on two months prior to his passing. Wayne apologized and promised to correct the issue. So, Wayne did get it fixed. Within two days I finally had a replacement functioning inverter. It took almost three months and I probably invested 18 hours of my time into appointments to get it fixed. Not to mention my sister in law opening up for them twice when I wasn't home (after seeing what I went through first hand, she just had Solar City install their system). Almost everyone at ESP is friendly but that didn't fix a broken inverter. I too utilized Yelp reviews to make my decision on who to purchase through. So I've tried to give a fare assessment of my experience. It's now been 14 months and so far, so good. My annual true up was $600. The system was designed to produce 90% of what I need and it seems to be doing that. So, other than the slow repair issues, which costed ESP four additional customers, I'm happy with the system. I just dread the thought of what will happen the next time something goes wrong. read more
