Im not sure where to start with this one, I guess first off my waitress was very nice and the cook was very accommodating being it was 10am and I wanted hot beef with mashed potatoes. THAT is were my expectations turn for the worst. even with everything freshly made the food was subpar at best, I cant imagine that anything else everyone else is raving about this place can be 180 degree turn around and be fantastic! its not hard to make what I had and at best it sucked. moving on the place is FILTHY at best and the bathroom is disgusting. dam good thing I didn't have to poop! sorry Havelock but this place is just nasty and I cant even imagine what the kitchen looked like. Cute place to have breakfast if you don't mind having to wait. They have a large menu with some creative takes on the traditional breakfast, like their captain's special which is hashbrowns and veggies and cheese on the bottom, egg on top and toast on the side. Aside from the tasty meal, my favorite part is that I didn't feel like I was going to go into a food coma afterwards. You get a decent portion size for a decent price (not super cheap, but definitely not expensive) and you get good quality food. The waitresses were quick and everyone seemed happy! When we got there for brunch around 9 am, the line was already out the door--a testament to how good the food is. Luckily, we only had to wait around 10 min before being seated. It's a small place, so get ready to get cozy with your neighbors. I ordered the ham & cheese omelet. Not a super bold choice, perhaps, but it was cooked well and the half-size was the perfect amount of food. The hash browns were the right amount of crispy. My friend loved her pancakes. I've only been here once, for breakfast, and I'm not sure if I'll return to see if my experience changes. This place had been recommended and I brought my daughter here since they serve a "traditional" breakfast (sausage, eggs, hashbrowns, etc). I would rate the meal as okay, not great, but the portions were generous. Would have preferred the sausage patties to not be glistening with grease. The real complaint was the coffee - the cups were incredibly dirty, as though they hadn't even been washed. The thought chills me. There were obvious remnants of coffee drips around the outside on both cups. The waitress that served us (bleached blond) was not the one that took our order and her demeanor was not welcoming. I guess considering the price - very reasonable - I shouldn't complain but it wouldn't take much to change this to a five-star. read more

The Engine House was built in 1912. The local historic cafe had a friendly atmosphere and food was delicious. I had "the best eggs Benedict in the universe" with crispy hash browns and my husband made the apple cinnamon pancakes disappear. The coffee was delicious. read more

One of the best places to get breakfast in Northeast Lincoln. Their country-fried steak is the best I've had anywhere in the Midwest. Friendly crowd and a great atmosphere. Yum! While traveling thru Lincoln Nebraska, we had breakfast at the Engine House Cafe and were so pleased! We asked the waitress about the local favorites, and the Eggs Benedict was at the top of the list. The menu description referred to it as some of the best on the planet, so I gave it a try. I had never had Eggs Benedict before....it was great!! My husband had the sausage gravy biscuit platter and it was yummy too. Hash browns were crispy and tasty. Cafe decor includes fire house memorabilia and a large American flag that is beautiful on the brick wall. You won't be disappointed. read more

It seems like I'll get a ton of flack for rating this place only three stars...as many of the locals have a die-hard appreciation and cult-like love for the quirky place. Im not from Lincoln, so my idea of good breakfast might be a little different. It seems like Lincoln has only a spattering of local food places and many chains. The food in comparison to local chains was good. In comparison to local, popular restaurants I've been to before-not so great. The place is owned by a family-it seems like they all work there and run it together which is really sweet and admirable. The Father was teaching his daughters some good lesson about hard work which is rare these days-so kudos to you, dude! He was also very dedicated and friendly. I ordered an omelet with fruit. The fruit looked like it came from a can with syrup. The mushrooms on my omelet were definitely from a can and the spinach was once frozen. I understand that food can be pricey and small business is expensive but this place seems popular enough to offer fresh ingredients and still make some money. The atmosphere was alright. It was definitely cool being in an old firehouse, everything was a bit outdated and kitschy but I appreciated the ambience. The food was really only mediocre hence the three stars. It seems like the people make this place great. Definitely better than a chain joint like Denny's! read more

Went for my first visit for fathers day. The place was busy as should be expected from a smaller restaurant so there was a slight wait to be seated and also a longer than normal wait for the food. That wait is moot compared to the food that comes on your plate. I ordered the chicken fried steak with 2 eggs, hash browns and toast. Top notch for price. The only problem with this place are patrons who stay at their table long after their food has been consumed. Move along there are other people who want to enjoy the food and waitresses who need more tips and they deserve them tips. Can't wait to go back for lunch sometime. read more

Found this place when looking for a place to get some breakfast on our way out of Lincoln on Christmas Eve. They were extremely busy. Despite this, the staff members were very friendly and super efficient. From the moment a couple stood up to leave, they had the table bussed, cleaned, menus set, and where seating me and my wife within 60 seconds. I ordered the Chicken-fried-Chicken breakfast. It was really good. The chicken was crispy and well seasoned. They didn't refill drinks unless we flagged down a server, but this was expected considering how busy they were. The servers were running back and forth constantly without any break the entire time we were there. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

Best breakfast in Lincoln! The space is a converted engine house in the Havelock. The environment is bustling with energy and good food. The "world's best" eggs Benedict lives up to the name. The Engine House was the perfect place for a casual brunch! Everything from the people to the atmosphere was welcoming and the food was delicious! My party of 3 quickly pulled up a seat at the counter and the staff was attentive and quick. Loved this place. Pros: their onion rings are the best in town. No really THE BEST!! My husband ordered a burger was really great also I had the buiscits and gravy platter it was amazing. However, we were seated relatively fast and didn't wait long. I ordered one of their platters and shared a pancake with a friend. The food was good, exactly what you would expect though. I mean it had country potatoes, eggs, cheese, veggies, and meat on it. It also had toast. Might have been that i didn't get something fancy, but what I ordered isn't hard to cook, thus you can go just about to any other place that serves something similar and get the same food. It was good food, it just didn't offer anything truly unique. The pancake was good as well. We ordered the Cran-nut one and it was, again, good but not something that surprised me. Service overall was good and I have no complaints on the place. Good place to eat, would eat there again. However i would get something different next time since some of their food you can get at many other breakfast places. read more
