Engrained has become our family's new go-to restaurant. The menu is diverse and stocked with local produce and meat. Our food has always been terrific. My wife and I tried Engrained for the first time a few days ago. It wasn't bad, but it was far from great. The Good: Very pleasant staff, nice building and atmosphere, great food selection. I didn't try any of their beer as I was originally planning because they offer mead from Wild Blossom Meadery in Chicago, which is something I've always wanted to try. Turns out mead is one of the most delicious drinks ever. I tried a flight of the 4 types of mead Engrained offers. One wasn't good at all to me (turns out I really don't like chili peppers in my drinks), but the other three were fantastic. The Bad: The food really just wasn't that good. I ordered a horseshoe, which had an angus hamburger, fries, beer cheese sauce, scallions, and bacon. How could that possibly taste bad you ask? No salt. None. It was the most bland thing I've tasted in a while. Plus, the beer cheese sauce was way too thick and grainy, which is usually the result of a roux being used, but not prepared properly. I'm not saying I'm a pro at making cheese sauce, but I'm not trying to sell any to people either. This is a solid, middle of the road 3/5. Next time I'll probably only go for the beer. read more

The grilled chicken bacon ranch wrap was very good. My wife really like the beer braised stuffed chicken thighs. I sampled 4 different beers then had a pint of the EPA which was pretty good. The French fries were also good. read more

The food was delicious and generously sized-I had a wonderful salad topped with salmon that even as a small was too much to finish in a meal so I took home the leftovers. The waitress was very nice while waiting on us but disappeared for a long while after our drink order, maybe to put orders in or something. Had a group of over 25 for dinner on a Friday night in the back room. It could have been a challenge but the wait staff was very efficient in their drink orders and took orders off of a limited menu. That's the best way to do it with a group that size, realizing the limitations of juggling such orders. We had a choice of steak, pork, chicken and fish. Everyone got their orders quickly we could move on with our meeting. Enjoyed the beer selection - others enjoyed their cocktails or soft drinks. They do a great job handling a crowd that size and food was good. So we go here a lot. The beer is always good with a strong variety. Staff is always great too. The food is always hit or miss. The bar food items are pretty good most of the time. The BBQ pulled pork sandwich use to always be good but the last time the bun was smashed and had a chintzy amount of pork. But the pork was flavorful. Fries are good too. The one item that is always great is the fish and chips. Best around. They just need to work on food consistency. read more

Delicious!! We came for a NYE dinner when we were passing through on a trip, and were thrilled! My dad got the salmon which was delicious, and I got a NYE special brisket sandwich. The specialty desserts were to die for, and he really liked the blackberry beer he tried. Would for sure come back! Great service and charming wait staff, and really cool quaint atmosphere. I had the Skinny Chicken with Mashed potatoes and I thought it was excellent and taste really good. Unfortunately, I didn't have the beer but the Sangria was good with excellent service and clean environment. Loved it! So, another review edit. Down to 2 stars. Why? Well, things are still OK....but that is the problem. "OK" isn't really good enough. Let me elaborate. The beers are still all very good. They have regular, seasonal brews and all of them have been perfectly drinkable. But that is where the 5 star ratings end. The biggest culprit is the food. The first issue is the lack of change. We have been going here since the place opened. They always marketed themselves as seasonal and all about local produce and all the other cool tag-lines that people use. Should that not suggest at least an occasional change in menu? Hell, even the "veg of the day" is the same EVERY SINGLE DAY no matter what day or time of year. The added a few different horseshoe choices (boring) and, maybe, 2 or 3 other menu items over the last year or so, but these were all only slight variations of what was already there. Quality has gone way down too. Beer bread has been regularly burned, not to mention had the taste and crunch of a deep fryer rather than an oven. This is pretty unacceptable. Salads have been limp and loaded with, frankly, greens well passed their best by date. Also, a takeout order recently asked for the pulled pork nachos. Great. Problem there was that when we got home the nachos were MISSING THE PULLED PORK!! That is kind of a big thing. The fries are regularly burned and have CLEARLY been cooked in not quite hot enough, dirty oil. From time to time they have been inedible. Just burned, salty bits of fryer sweepings and rejects. I could go on about the food (I will if anyone wants) but just understand that there has been a near constant case of mediocrity with all of it. The place has been super busy of late. Good for them. But I think that is the problem. They seem completely unprepared for the crowds...or, the even worse crime of very possibly thinking that they don't NEED to try, so long as the people keep coming. That is a sick and sad issue with this town. Too many equate popularity with quality. Service has been slow as hell as well. Sitting at the bar on a busy night? Be prepared for a 20 minute wait for anyone to serve you. The place started great, but they seemed way too happy to sit on this and just hope for the best. With the distinct lack of any other even half decent bar out this way, all they had to do was wait. The low expectations masses have started flocking around. How sad. Oh, and don't get me started on the recently added "video gaming" (gambling...ahem) area. REALLY?? Is THAT the kind of place you want?? The more I think about it the more depressing it all gets. We are going to give it a few more tries, but I am seriously close to just letting it drift away, like so many other promising but, ultimately, 3rd rate bars/restaurants in this town. Please, Engrained, for the sake of quality and respect, pick up your act!! I know it is a tough area to do business in, but damn, keep going with quality and respect for ingredients and people WILL come. The area is improving! People WILL come! Even Obed and Isaacs has raised their game! And I cannot believe that I am referencing that place in a positive way! But hell, at least they have made some major changes to things. It really shows! We went here for Father's Day. Upon arrival we were told there would be a 25 minute wait, we agreed and sat in the waiting area. As we were waiting at least 10 other people came in and were told the same thing but decided to leave instead. Once we were seated we saw that there were plenty open tables and couldn't figure out why they were turning people away. I walked around one of there other sections and it was not bussed at all, maybe this is why they were turning people away as it was still un-bussed when we left. For an appetizer we ordered the cheese curds which were good but didn't make up for the service or the waitresses seemingly "I don't really want to be here" attitude. For my entree I ordered the filet medium rare. When our main course arrived the garlic mashed potatoes were lumpy and under flavored. The 3 asparagus that came with the meal were cold. After cutting into my steak the color seemed O.K. at best but it was completely and utterly dry, I'm talking about no blood on the plate, which for medium rare should not happen. It seemed that the chef pressed down on the steak on the grill, which should be an obvious no-no. All in all I heard about this place before going but wanted to try it anyway. I can definitely say that I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone nor will I ever return. read more

We're not really appetizer people but our entrees were delicious. My husband ordered the New York strip and I ordered the special, a sriracha burger. Both had wonderful flavor. Nice, easy going atmosphere. Very willing to give taste tests on the craft beers. Lots of TVs for the avid sports fan. Food was good and offered in a way that fit my dietary needs. I would definitely cone back again. My only complaint is that they don't make a Porter... but the chocolate Boch was an adequate substitute. Great food. Great Service. I have a gluten allergy and the server was awesome. He was very careful about checking in with the kitchen then back to me when he discovered part of my meal contained gluten. The menu is great and shows vegetarian and gluten free choices that are clearly marked. I ordered the BBQ burger with a gluten free bun. The server realized there were fried onions on the burger so he came back to clarify if I had a food allergy. When he brought the meal he assured me the fries were gluten free. What a surprise! First time here to try it out, figured to be pub food but found a good diverse menu. I had the pot roast, which was awesome, and my wife had the special which was cod cakes. She loved it also. The waiter was very nice, knowledgeable and attentive. They even have a pastry chef from the local college and we had chocolate cake that was amazing. Very conveniently located if traveling I-72. Nice open parking lot-which makes it really easy when traveling with a trailer. Good selection of handcrafted beers. Strawberry spinach salad was really fresh and truly one of the best salads I've ever had. Pizza was awesome-if you like a thin crust. The server could have been more attentive. The bathrooms were very clean and we both (are germaphobes) loved the StepNPull! I recommend trying this great restaurant, if only to support the buy local movement. read more

I came in here with a group for our Christmas party. We were seated immediately, which was very nice. As soon as we sat down, the servers asked for our drink orders. Although the service was perfect, the food and home made beer was subpar. The atmosphere was great and relaxing. We all loved the decor! I just wish the food was better. Awesome place, great atmosphere, and great food!! Started off with onion rings(beer battered of course!!) and excellent from there. Had a four beer flight and loved all of them and had a hard time choosing which one to drink!! My only criticism is that the IPA had fruit in it (grapefruit) and my personal belief is that no beer should have fruit in it(if you like fruit in beer-drink wine:)). Anyways, you won't be disappointed here, great place to come check out!! read more
