After stopping by the Abraham Lincoln House and library, we came across this microbrewery and had to go in! They also have a cidery, but it wasn't open during this season. Thankfully we still were able to get one cider, and they had a selection of other beers. The cider was tart and refreshing, and I really like the berry mocktail, which had ginger beer, and a mix of berries in it. As for food, the Nashville hot chicken sandwich came with a lot of heat which was great. I got the dry rub version, which is spicer than the saucy version. The horseshoe sandwich is a local favorite, which is an open faced sandwich with sliced bread topped with meat (we got the angus beef), fries, and cheese sauce. It was quite heavy and creamy because of all the sauce. Overall we enjoyed our meal and our server was very friendly, although service was on the slower side. read more

We were at the Lincoln Presidential Museum and were getting hungry, so we walked down to Obed and Isaac's. We were seated right away, and the place is a bit quirky but cool. We ordered a local beer and a glass of wine. After reading the menu, we ordered 2 cups of soup. Mr. Bee had the chili and said it was seasoned well and he enjoyed it. I had the beer cheese soup which was also very good. We ordered the Vegetarian Horseshoe Sandwich to share, seems like a local favorite, but we hadn't heard of it. So after we placed our lunch order I googled a Horseshoe Sandwich and learned it is a regional favorite. The sandwich is open-faced. It starts with a thick piece of toasted bread topped with a hamburger patty, or ham or in our case a veggie burger, topped with a rich cheese sauce and French fries. The sandwich evidently originated at the Old Leland Hotel in town in 1928. After learning that I am really glad we decided to give it a try. Boy we were shocked when our sandwich finally came out, the service was a bit slow. The sandwich was huge, it was actually two pieces of bread, two veggie patties, lots of cheese sauce and fries. Just beware if your splitting it, you actually get a full sandwich each. It was really good. The cheese sauce was great with the fries and the patty. While the food was really good, and our server was nice. The service was a bit slow, we had to ask twice for our check. While it was a bit of confusion getting seated due to the bartender's trouble with multi-tasking, we were seated after about 20 minutes of wait time near 1:00. The pretzels & cheese sauce were really a nice way to get our meal started. I order the pony shoe, a smaller portion of an open-faced sandwich containing your choice of meat & cheese sauce, over toast. They top it off with very crisp French fries. I liked it & am glad to have tried a Springfield entree. My hubby had salad & chili. He said that both were OK, but the chili was better after he added leftover cheese sauce from our pretzels. Our server was nice, but seemed scattered. It took a while for her to return with our check. We hadn't expected to be there for 1.5 hours. Obed & Isaac's is a gem. The food was amazing and surprisingly affordable. I had the glazed salmon with rice and it was cooked perfectly--flavorful and memorable. One of my companions ordered the Willyshoe, and they couldn't stop talking about it. Such a creative and fun take on the classic horseshoe. The outdoor seating under the string lights created a great atmosphere, and the beer garden is a real highlight. We enjoyed the bocce ball and the relaxed vibe that made it easy to linger. The staff was accommodating to our group and let us sit and enjoy our time without any rush. The food was so good I completely forgot to take photos, which says a lot. DO NOT COME HERE! Absolute HORRIBLE service. We waited over AN HOUR for our food and was STILL MISSING part of our order. There is a big crowd but most of us are sharing. We had to ask for water refills. We watched 4 other tables get their food, finish their food. Paid and left. I asked for a wine list inside and got attitude and told there wasn't one. So I had to ask what the wine list was and got met with sarcasm. How would I know? When the food came out, no apology. Nothing. Egg rolls were overcooked. Hardly "Philly" style. My husband and I stopped at this cute little brewery in downtown Springfield, IL on a trip during the fall. We hit the lunch crowd and I think people watching was a much fun as the lunch. The staff was very friendly and our server was nice and efficient. We ordered two sour beers that were good, and a Ruben sandwich. My husband thought the greens of the side salad that came with the Ruben were wilted. The sandwich was okay, and a little pricey for what was served. We came here on a Sunday before a matinee at the Hoogland -- full of hope, hungry, and maybe a little too optimistic. The building is beautiful, the location is perfect, and we thought, "Hey, maybe those bad reviews were just people having a bad day." Spoiler alert: they were not. Service started strong. We were seated right away, and they even brought coloring pages for our kids -- a nice touch that gave us false hope. Then the food arrived, and it was like watching a plot twist in a bad movie. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Pony Shoe. It came out looking like someone microwaved a bag of frozen chicken tenders and tossed them in buffalo sauce for moral support. The cheese sauce might have been homemade -- it was grainy enough to make me believe someone whisked it themselves -- but there was barely any. Also, who hides the cheese under the fries? That's the star of the show! I had to beg for more, and even then it arrived lukewarm, much like my excitement for the meal. My wife ordered the Pork Schnitzel with "spaetzle." Except it wasn't schnitzel; it was a pork cutlet that had clearly seen the inside of a freezer longer than most people's leftovers. And the "spaetzle"? Nope. Straight-up spaghetti noodles. The mushroom sauce tasted like it came straight from a can labeled Cream of Disappointment. Two of the kids got cheese pizza -- or as I like to call it, "Frozen Circle of Regret." My son's "chips" were somehow both soggy and chewy, a texture I didn't even know existed. Frying them until they're crunchy shouldn't be rocket science, but here we are. Everything was bland, flavorless, and missing any sign of seasoning. The best dish of the entire meal? My daughter's burger on her Pony Shoe -- mostly because it resembled real food. And just to add a little flair, nearly every plate was dusted with dried parsley. Because, of course, nothing says fine dining like sprinkling dried parsley on frozen food. This place has serious potential -- it's got the space, the charm, and the perfect downtown vibe. But if your secret ingredient is "frozen," no amount of parsley is going to save you. read more

We stopped in during a off peak time, and the food service was slower than expected. We ordered the turkey wrap, which was on the smaller side and a bit dry; next time we'd probably try a different menu item. The atmosphere is nice, and it's easy to see why this is such a popular spot in Springfield. We're glad we gave it a try and would be open to visiting again to experience it at its best. read more

The different rooms and overall ambiance made for a unique dining experience. The food and the house-brewed beers at Obed and Isaac's were both highlights. We were referred here after visiting the Lincoln House. We were told to try a Horseshoe so we did. I got the burger version and my friend got a pork version. Unfortunately,...this visit missed the mark. Service was fine, and the pretzel bites were decent, ...but everything else fell short.... The peanut butter burger sounded great but had very little peanut butter flavor and lacked seasoning. The chicken and waffles were inedible...the chicken was cooked but had a slimy texture under the breading....I had my husband try it to make sure it wasn't just me...he immediately had to spit it out.... The fries were bland and not fully cooked. Overall, a disappointing meal.... They offered a discount for the chicken but the meal in total was still over $80 for lunch we don't mind paying that if it was worth it ... but this was definitely not! I love going to Obeds for the vibes and the beer- their strawberry blonde is so good! I usually have nothing bad to say. Service is good, especially when it was hot and they tried to accommodate us outside in a way to avoid the sun. My complaint this time was the food. My Thai peanut chicken wrap was very small, so disappointing for $14 and my side of the cucumber salad was very bland and not worth it. read more

The caprese flatbread was okay there was nothing spectacular about it. The pub burger was good, the meat quality is definitely high and the fries were also good even though we didn't order them originally. We originally ordered the Mac & cheese but it wasn't served hot and there was nothing special about it either, we preferred the fries! The building is beautiful and the eclectic decor was cozy. Really great place for out of town guests. The house's historic vibe fits in well in historic Springfield. All the beer is brewed onsite and the one's I've tried live up to their menu descriptions. On my most recent visit with some out of town friends - we all enjoyed our beer and entrees. Meals included fish and chips, honey, goat, and bacon flatbread, Reuben sandwich and fries, and beer cheese soup. Everyone enjoyed their meal- position sizes were ample- and the beer complimented the food. Our server was amazing. Super friendly and on top of things. Review Visit: July 1st, 2015 Microbrewery, majorflavor. It wouldn't be a trip to Springfield without visiting something that is inspired or paying an homage to the history of the Capital. You can't throw a rock in Springfield without hitting something that is referencing Abraham Lincoln or this history of the state. Obed and Isaac's is a reference not to Abraham directly but to those he was around. I will avoid the history lesson as I don't fully know who Obed and Isaac were but you can click here if you want a light history lesson of Obed and Isaac's and what the building was and how it relates to Lincoln. Truth be told, I am not sure how the three of us stumbled upon this place for lunch. I know we headed down to explore Springfield for the afternoon and needed somewhere to eat. Luckily, the weather was in our favor and we stumbled upon Obed and Isaac's. They offered outdoor seating that we happily okay with. As we were talking to the person who ended up seating us outside, they offered us a glimpse of the microbrewing process. Due to insurance liabilities, we weren't able to go in the building they were brewing but we got a quick 2 minute tour and history lesson while looking in from the outside. After that, we were lead to our table and given the menus to look at. It is not often that I will order a beer while out traveling since I am driving, but since my girlfriend was with us, she offered to drive if Matt and I wanted to grab some beers. I took her up on that offer and looked at both menus as I formulated what I wanted to order. I settled on a Dirty Blonde Ale for my drink and a Pub Burger for my main meal with a side of mashed potatoes instead of french fries. I've never had mashed potatoes with a burger up until this point in my life and now I can mark that off my 'odd sides to have with a burger' list. My girlfriend got the same Pub Burger while Matt went with a flatbread pizza. Once our food came out, I could see why they charged a bit over $10 for a burger. This thing looked gourment and top of the line. I had serious doubts that my girlfriend nor myself would be able to open our mouths enough to get proper bites. This thing was ginormous. It was tall enough to qualify for some of the rides at amusement parks! Not only did it look delicious but it smelled even better. But, none of that matters. We aren't eating looks or getting full on smells. It was time to unhinge our jaws and get to eating. Each bite was pure heaven. I've had a lot of burgers in my life and this one easily tops my Top 5 list. It just didn't look good. It just didn't taste good. It was phenomenal. Love was there at first bite. I really think the inclusion of the pretzel bun is what made this burger perfect. It mixed well with the bacon and BBQ sauce. The beer came out before the burger and it was instrumental in helping me wash down this behemoth of a burger. It's a good thing I was savoring it instead of chugging. I'm not partial to ales in particular but something about this Dirty Blonde screamed at me from the menu and I was glad it did. It was super tasty. Not a beer I could've bought a 6-pack of but one that accompanied a meal perfectly. I did steal a few of my girlfriends french fries and those were instantly food envy-inducing. They had the perfect level of crisp and seasoning to them. Not to be outdone, my mashed potatoes were equally delicious. Matt seemed to be equally enjoying his flatbread pizza. Overall, this was the best meal we could've asked for and by-far the best meal I've ever had in Springfield. Since this visit, they did open a Peoria location. That one is closer to home for me but due to work schedules and some live changes, I haven't had the time to check it out. Which may be a good thing as I've heard mixed things about it. But, that won't deter me from trying it out at least once. I need another Pub Burger in my life, pronto. read more

My wife lived in Springfield 10 years ago and talked about this place often. When we went for the weekend, I was excited to check it out --- and it did not disappoint. It was crowded when we arrived for lunch, but shortly after, we found seats at the bar. The first beer I had was an IPA, which was nice and refreshing on this hot day. I wanted to save room for the signature "Horseshoe" --- a Springfield delicacy, so I only got one beer. My next drink was a seltzer, which was also nice relief from the heat. The horseshoe is just as big and filling as I was prepared for, and it was exactly what I hoped for. The cheese, ground beef, and Texas Toast created a supreme base, and the fries on top were hot and crispy. I wish there had been a little more cheese, but I was able to dunk most of the fries in the goop underneath the bread. The atmosphere was great inside, very friendly. And the prices are very reasonable. As an added bonus, the only home owned by Abraham Lincoln is just a few blocks away. So if you like craft beer and bar food, and our 16th president, this is a great place to stop. read more

Well, here it is...my 300th brewery visit. Are you impressed? I hope so because I haven't enjoyed it. I did it all for you! Ok...maybe not. Obed & Isaac's is a good stop for my 300th it seems. It's located in a cool old building and has a great vibe to it. A flight of four included: Strawberry blonde ale which had good strawberry aroma and flavor. Some strawberry beers have the slight sourness but this one didn't. Sweet and reminiscent of eating sweet berries right out of the garden. Next was Magical Unicorn Elixir. Am I the only one with a dirty mind? I'll leave it at that.... This was a really good IPA. Great hop aroma and flavor. I ordered an appetizer of Scotch eggs because, well, I love Scotch eggs. Honestly, they were a little overdone for me, the yolks were basically hard boiled. They were still quite tasty of course and I know many people don't appreciate the soft boiled yolks. They were served with a stone ground mustard and marinara. Honestly this is the first time I've run across marinara with a Scotch egg and my answer is...no. Sorry, but that's just weird. Mustard goes with Scotch eggs. Would you have mustard with fried mozzarella? Hell no! I'm not hating on marinara, except with Scotch eggs. What's that? You like marinara on your Scotch eggs? Ok, you're wrong. No hate. No anger. You're just wrong. Deal with it and move on. And have mustard with your Scotch eggs. Last beer was...well I can't remember now. I have hit three breweries and ranted about marinara sauce. DD Ont judge me! Have you nouu to iced that no one ever says "Don't judge me" eh er n you compliment them? No, it's only when you have criticism, which means to me it's not the judging that bothers them as long as it's positive. Anyway... O&I was pretty cool in spite of the marinara. We were in Springfield steeping ourselves in all things Lincoln, and our B&B recommended Obed and Isaac's and offered us two drink tokens and a free dessert to try it. Wow! It did not disappoint. We started out in the beer garden where we enjoyed cold, hoppy IPAs. Moving indoors to the restaurant, I had the spinach and artichoke flatbread. Hubby had the horseshoe sandwich. Both were too big for us to finish but they were delicious. Hubby enjoyed his IPA. I ordered a cocktail that I enjoyed but now cannot recall what it was. Checked their website but it wasn't listed. I think it may have been a peach old fashioned? Anyhow, the experience was amazing and we would return when in Springfield. Service was friendly. Loved the artsy, farm house type vibe inside. Local artists have their art displayed for sale throughout the restaurant. Beautiful pieces! There was a local sidewalk craft fair that night which was also a great way to mix with the locals. We decided to try the place on recommendations from several Yelpers. We found it to be a standard hamburger joint dropped into a classic Springfield building. No frills. Atmosphere much like any other burger joint but our food choices were quite good. My wife enjoyed her Whiskey-glazed salmon and cucumber salad (just the right size for her hunger level but would not be enough for someone really hungry). I had a burger with cheese, bacon and onion grilled perfectly medium rare. Service was timely and businesslike...no chit chat from the server. I wouldn't seek out another visit but would return if in the mood for a good burger. read more
