This place was an amazing find! Awesome pedicure including a nice long foot massage and sea salt scrub for get this... only $18!! I didn't ask how much it was going to be when I got in and was expecting it to be at least $26 and boy was I pleasantly surprised. I came on a Friday afternoon and it was surprisingly not busy. The ladies here are really nice, but they don't speak much english so trying to explain how I wanted something done was a bit of a challenge. Went in on a girls' day after brunch for pedicures. It was great. Prices aren't bad. Clean, super nice ladies and clean. Got a nice pedi for $23 which includes the exfoliating, massage and polish. I went there for a mani/pedi for the first time because a friend if mine had a gift certificate. As we walk in they were very nice and greeted us but as the man started my manicure he did it so quick that all the glues was stuck in between my finger nails that there was no room for my finger nails to breath....instead of cleaning it and loosen it Frm being so tight he left it alone and told me he would fix and finish it after I do my pedi....in my head I was like are u serious ? it's burning and youre gonna leave it like this for now...Joann was nice enough to give me a bowl of cold water to soak my fingers inside. After I finish my pedi he finish my Manicure..but somehow I kind of knew it didnt really look right but I couldn't really tell because when I left it wasn't fully dry yet. As I went home I realize that my French tip on the inside was so white instead of pinkish inside like any French tip should look like... my friends ask me why does my nails look so strange and stubby? it looked very fat and short..it really didnt looked right wit my small Short fingers ....I felt that he did my nails according to how he does nails but not to match ur hands...I went back the next day to have him fix it for me and it looked soo much better. I'm not sure but they seem kind of irritated but It's not My fault that he didn't know how to do a good job in the first place... because for the price I pay for a medi/pedi $48 i ma make sure my nails looked right...I can go else where and get it done better and for cheaper....this was the first bad experience out out of 100 times I did my nails...not ever going back again.....though they did have a nice deluxe pedi which is also very pricy.... read more

I have been looking for a new place to get my nails done - one that I just can't wait to get back to - and, based on other's reviews, I went to Joann's hoping to be wowed. I wasn't. I called ahead of time for a mani/pedi appointment and was told "in an hour" was good - and then they hung up. They didn't ask my name so I wondered how they would know who it was that made the appointment...but I was still hopeful. An hour later I walked in and Joann asked if she could help me. I said I had an appointment and she seemed surprised. She looked around (everyone was busy) and told me to go pick my colors. They started the water running in a chair for me and gave me a few magazines. Ok...no big deal. When they got to me about 10 minutes later (I have waited longer at other places) , I opted for the "special" mani/pedi ($40) that other reviewers have said is so fabulous. One of the girls started on my pedi and about 25-30 minutes later the guy who was doing someone else's manicure came over to do mine. I would tell you their names but they never told me...never asked me mine...they seldom spoke to me - but they did talk to other manicurist/pedicurists during that time. Another customer getting a pedicure had several conversations on her cell phone which also diminished the experience for me. I get that she was a customer too but someone could have asked her to please not use her cell while others were there - or something. Although I was smiling and trying to enjoy the experience, it just wasn't fun. I became bored and just wanted it over. Both the manicurist and the pedicurist asked if the job they did was ok - I will give them that - but once they were done, and they took my credit card, they just left me in the chair. They didn't help me to the nail dryer or even come back to check on me. So I sat there, in the chair, for about 15 minutes longer. Once I thought I was dry (again, no one came to see if I was), I used one foot to find my flip flops and managed to get one on before Joann noticed I was trying to get out of the chair and get the other flip flop on - then she came over to help me. I got up, smiled, said thank you and walked out. If anyone responded or said thank you, I didn't hear it. The final outcome is that my toes and nails look pretty good - with the exception that there are now bubbles in the polish on all my nails...which is rather annoying. Hair cuts and hair color- They do a great job on men cuts. My nephew gets his hair cuts here and the stylist never goes too short, like other places. Very affordable too. There is only one person cutting hair, but the wait is not too long between cuts. For women the hair color and touch ups are pretty affordable too. Great if you want to get highlights. They do foil instead of cap. I used to have highlights and they always looked great. Waxing- I ALWAYS get my eyes brows waxed here. I like mine thick and natural looking and she does a great job at shaping them. They have a small room just for waxing. eyebrows $8 Mani-pedi $25 for regular and $40 for deluxe Pros- the place is clean, modern looking, accepts credit cards, easier to find parking (one dedicated parking in the back). You can have private parties after hours, Joanne will host a mani-pedi party. I had a ladies night out, she set up a table with a couple of little snacks and we brought the rest., food, appetizers and drinks and we had a blast while we got our nails done. It was great. If you want a great massage when you get a deluxe manicure request Michael, he does acupressure and it's a lot more than just a hand massage. Michael is GREAT! he is like a healer, I go here every time I have a headache and walk out pain free. You can also just do massage. Cons- they say they honor appointments, but I have seen people who have to wait. It's better to just walk in. The nail polish is not all OPI, I usually bring my own. Ask Joanne for the OPI polish, she keeps it away and brings it out upon request. I cannot comment on the gel or acrylic nails, as I have never had them done here. Came for the first time today the lady who did my pedicure was in a rush unless this is the way she works..there was only 2 customers for her to be rushing. This is a great new place in Alameda. They take their time with you instead of rushing you in and out like most nail salons. It's also the cleanest salon I've ever been to. My husband now gets his hair cut here and they are the best haircuts he has ever received. Joanne really tried to play me... I walked in on a Sunday evening around 5 to get a manicure pedicure with my mom who was going to meet me there. As I sat down I told the lady that my mom would be meeting me and she responded with silence. A few minutes later she asked when my mom would be coming because they're closing early. I called my mom and told her not to come. Another woman came in trying to get a mani pedi, greeted with an awkward response but they gave her a seat. Whatever. My mom can get her nails done another time. Meanwhile, I hadn't had my nails done in months and I could tell the manicurist was rushing. She didn't push my cuticles back and left a big gap with no polish. Whatever I just wanted the damn things painted. As I'm getting ready to pay, I'm feeling rushed and as I'm getting my card Joanne tells me to slow down. It's a little hard when you're hovering over me but whatever. Paid $30 left a $10 tip, okay BYE! Two days later I notice a charge of $70. I've been a waitress for many years, I know how easy it is to enter a tip in and I know how easy it is to CORRECT IT. Called the salon three times. First time Joanne wasn't there and a woman took my name and number saying they'd call back. No call. I called again and Joanne still wasn't there. I called again, still nothing. I walked into the salon and Joanne was not going to be there so I left my receipt and my bank statement with the incorrect charge. Low and behold, as I'm getting on the freeway, who calls but JOANNE. She apologized too many times, she then told me she couldn't get a hold of me because she didn't have my number. Okay whatever, ding dong. I came the next day to collect my money. Joanne, looking her usual messy self with a stained shirt and a cold gaze, recognized me and proceeded to ruffle through her ancient looking books. She started explaining to me in broken English how she made the mistake as if I needed proof.. She starts walking me through it with the little machine saying she entered $40 as the tip instead of $10? So basically what you're saying is I should never come back to this establishment because even the owner is capable of making the absolute dumbest mistake. Then she tried to offer me a service instead of my money. She had to basically do paperwork before giving back the money SHE TOOK that I DID NOT AUTHORIZE. Ain't that something! How about have my money ready and waiting at the door so I don't have to waste anymore of my day with your stupidity. Spare your money and get your nails done by someone who actually cares. The worst mani/pedi everrrr!! The whole reason of a mani/pedi is to basically get all that skin & cuticles nice & clean followed by a fresh coat of paint which their selection is really small & old looking. Don't go here it's just not worth the irritation!!! Ok, so, I went in last week because I was in town and had a bad day and really just needed a little spa time. I got a full set of nails and a pedi. The prices are good but they kinda reflect the sevice. The Guy who did my nails did a horible job. He sloped on the gel (all over the place). I had air bubbles in the gel that you could see and extra gel off to the sides and onto my actual skin and the nails are all lumpy and just look like crap! The girl who did my toes was decent but not worth the money. IT WAS AS IF EVERYONE IN THERE WAS TRYING TO GET YOU THE HELL OUT OF THEIR SHOP AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!! I work in Alameda during the week and when I first started working in the area I had no idea where I should go to get my nails done... My aunt and cousin suggested we get our nails done and so they took me to Joann Nails and Hair and that was it, I was sold. They are professional and make sure that everything is perfect. They also try to be as accommodating as possible when the nail salon gets packed, which on some evenings towards the end of the week happens. For the most part they are fast and efficient, I would recommend them to people for sure when it comes to nails. I get pedicures done here and their pedicures are amazing (as noted by everyone else on here). I got my nails done with french Shellac nails, I have horses so I am hard on my hands, they lasted for more than two weeks, which for me is amazing and almost a miracle... would recommend shellac to people who don't want the regular acrylic type style that files down your nail beds, which damages your nails over time. I haven't had my hair done here but from what I've seen they do a great job on hair as well. My aunt gets her hair colored here and it always looks great, I've seen a few men get their hair trimmed and buzzed here so I know they are capable of cutting men's hair. I watched a woman one day get her hair styled, it was long and the male hair stylist crafted the hair into large draping curls, so they are capable in my book of styling hair after seeing the stylist do that. Would definitely recommend Joann Nails and Hair. read more

I've coming to Joan's nail shop since 2013. What attracted me aside a friend's recommendation was the cleanliness, modern features, and mainly the low competitive prices. The place is comfortable and is obvious Joan and her staff try to keep up with the janitorial duties. The prices were the lowest for a while, which made it the best! Unfortunately, in 2015 prices increased. The staff there does what you ask, sometimes they don't understand and that's when Joan steps in. Something I wish improved here and in most nail shops is discretion. It would be awesome if staff wouldn't call out ppl with nail problems. I've seen it time and time again, I guess that's the risk some ppl have to take. It would also be more professional if staff kept the conversation in English as sometimes is obvious they're talking about you, its only fair. Other than that, due to the location, cleanliness, and quickness... I recommend Joan's Nails & Hair Salon. Joan is a very hard worker and when she has minutes to spare, she'll make sure her clients are satisfied. read more

I should've reviewed this a while back, but always forgot to. I came here about a year ago, to get a french manicure and pedicure. I've been to many nail salons but never have I seen the person limit my choice of base color to ONE color. This is how they did it, they drew the white part of the french tip first and then used a paint brush to try to make the curve/clean out any uneven parts. They then got a light colored polish to cover the entire nail. To me, that just proves they have no skill. All the places I've been to allowed me to pick a colored polish of my choice and then was able to draw out the white line w/o going over or messing up. Never have I seen a paint brush be used. I will definitely not come back again. Also, they treat you better if you're a regular. Otherwise, they won't talk to you or say much to you. read more
