Made an appointment for earlier this week at the recommendation of one of my friends and they did not disappoint! I was a regular at another salon in Alameda for the last decade and the last few times I had gone I just wasn't as happy with them as I used to be. After mentioning that to my friend she told me to go to Vena and see Amy. Making my appointment online was super easy and check in when I got there was the same way. I got to sit and pick my color while I waited for a chair to open up and was then offered water or tea while I got my nails done. Amy did my fingers while another one of her coworkers did my toes but both of them were super sweet and good at what they do. I chose a blue/grey cateye color and love how it turned out! UPDATE: they offered to redo my nails and they turned out quite nice! So relieved that I can still count on this place! Great service and quality!! Maybe it was a fluke I'm so disappointed the quality of service slipped this far. Went for mani pedi today as usual, my nails are poorly sharpened, cuticles are not cleaned up, and the polish is all kinds of misaligned... I've asked the lady to fix multiple times and I genuinely believe this is her best effort. I could have done a better job DIY at home, can't believe I paid money for this. Uhh, I so hate that I have to update my review to give them a low rating. The staff is great. My nails look amazing and they are super friendly.. the low review is for how the management tried to nickle and dime me, twice. From what I was told, fills cost $5 extra for short nails. They said it takes more material for shorter nails. So the only way to not be charged extra is if you get a fill when your nails don't grow in between fills. Unfortunately I will have to find a new salon that doesn't charge extra for short nails. Edit: 1 star for Joe's reply. If the fill cost $60 because you have to shape the nails, just say it's $60. The point of getting a fill is to fill in the growth so of course if you keep your nails short, they will need to be cut short. Great work from staff. Dishonest management. read more

My friend treated me to a gel pedicure on my (nasty uncared for ) feet and now that Rose has finished working a gentle yet efficient and detailed oriented. This was my first service at Vena and I really wanted to like it as it's local and has good reviews. I had taken a long break from getting my nails done since I lived abroad and am still looking for a reliable place in Alameda--the search continues! Unfortunately I think I made a mistake by making my appointment at the end of the day when folks are probably tired. Brides-to-be, get your nails done with enough time in advance such that you can still get them fixed before the big day in case you're not 100% happy. About the service--it was so so. I thought I'd try dip nails for their reputation with durability, but I usually get acrylics (another note to self, don't try something new for your wedding). The durability seems to be there as the product is laid on thick, but the shape on my left thumb looks wonky and as if it was swollen if that makes sense. My natural nail tapers and that shape got lost with the powder. My right ring finger also came out a bit asymmetrical. I studied design/art, so I have a pretty keen eye. My biggest gripe is that the color on the sample was a lot lighter than the actual color I got, which is a nice color, but not what I was going for my wedding day. The technician said the color on the sample had faded and made a point to write a cross on the sample--perhaps to avoid using it in the future? I'm not sure, but that didn't solve my problem as there was no time to change the color and they would be closed the next two days. There's also a little black dot that could not be removed unless she took off the product, so I guess there's some kind of residue in the dipping powder. She did try to fix some of the edges on some of my nails, as the polish had a textured finish, but again, no time to get to all of them so there's still some of that. If we had had the time I would've asked for the color to be changed (and I wanted to add crystals)--but no time :-(. read more

I had to come in a few days early to remove the stunning cat eye French mani from about two weeks earlier because you're not allowed to wear metallic nail enamel when you have an MRI I decided I wanted a soft, calming color and at the last minute asked Mindy if she could do a line drawing of a lotus for me. We looked at a couple of pictures and she freehanded this absolute masterpiece which was not a copy, but her own beautiful interpretation of what I had imagined. read more

Pricing for different nail services were fair and reasonable. My nail appointment was with Tammy and she was friendly and did a great job! I was able to pick a color from a wide selection of options and relax during the manicure. The appointment went well and I was happy with customer service and the manicure. I went in today for a pedi and eyebrow waxing. I am a senior with arthritis and cannot bend down to cut my toenails myself. Hanna took so much care with my overgrown nails and cuticles, and gave me such a relaxing foot and leg massage! Mindy waxed my brows while my nails were being painted, so I didn't have to spend extra time for the two services. She listened to me and didn't make my eyebrows too thin or rectangular (what's with rectangular brows?!). I am very happy with the natural look I got. read more

I recently moved from southern california and was having trouble finding an affordable place to get a pedicure. All of the pricing in San Francisco is rather high in comparison to back home. I stumbled upon Vena's late at night scrolling through Yelp and couldn't be happier! The establishment is clean, the service was amazing, and I'd definitely come back again. I got a basic gel pedicure which was $50. I had grown out gel polish from about 3 months ago that they carefully removed. They even noted that the color I liked was sheer and recommended mixing 2 shades to make the color pop more. Other places would not provide their suggestion. The lady doing my pedicure was careful and kind. It took about 1 hour in total after finishing the gel and doing a massage/lotion with hot stone. I did not expect to be so pampered! I do highly recommend an appointment because they are BUSY! I had my pedicure on a Sunday and while they do take walk-ins, the salon was quite packed with existing appointments. They were honest with the long wait time with folks walking in which I appreciated as other places make you sit without real notice of when they can receive you. I can't wait to come back again and maybe try a manicure next time. read more

I never leave bad reviews but I'm not impressed by the place at all. They charged me $75 for nails that are poorly shaped and they didn't even paint them evenly or to the cuticle. Insane. All I wanted was a fill (I pay like $45 for a fill at my previous nail salon in Castro valley). The nail tech here told me that I have "gel builder" on my nails so she had to do them a certain way. Makes no sense, bc I def never had that on my nails before. She screwed up the color twice and I voiced my concerns and she seemed annoyed with me. Honestly it looks like my 6 year old niece painted my nails and the shape is awful. I will never go back here sorry. With tip I paid $90 bucks. Look at the photos they are AWFUL. I had to find out for my own if this nail salon could be a new fave of mines on the island. Upon walking in I was immediately greeted by multiple nail techs. The space was bright, airy, organized and clean. It was busy but there was an open seat for a pedicure. Yay! I chose my color, a beautiful aqua blue gel color from Chaun Legend's ‼ line of gel polish--surprised they had these! Pricing for pedicure options was comparable for the area, starting at $50 for a basic gel pedicure that includes a hot stone massage. The nail tech was gentle, and attentive, offering me water or tea and making sure I was comfortable at all times. She worked quick but quality didn't suffer and slowed it down for the hot stone massage part. In less than an hour my pedicure was finished! I totally see why Vena Nail Salon has such a good reputation for its quality work and charming space. I will so come back and will even plan on buying gift cards for family and friends. I have been to this salon a few times for full sets, and at the beginning I thought it was great. I noted their kindness and attention to detail. Never seemed rushed. I enjoyed the animal videos on screen and However the most recent time I went there was heavily disappointing. I asked for acrylic, but they couldn't tell me what was on my nails. I have no idea what they ended up using. They turned out super bumpy and uneven. For what they cost--not worth it. Perhaps it was just the nail tech I had that day. I would consider going back; however, they raised the prices this month because they upgraded some amenities. There are two televisions, which I'm usually not wild about, but they either show soothing nature videos (you can't watch a video of cute bunnies frolicking and not relax) or cooking videos, so they're not too intrusive. I loved everything about this place! The space is bright and clean, with sun pouring in through tall windows. It's super easy to book your appointment online, and I found a good deal of next-day availability. Vena offers more than 100 gel colors, which are satisfyingly displayed on a neat keychain, by color family, with sequential numbers and color names. Cleanliness standards are high. For each customer, there is a sanitized bag of tools and a single use pumice. My pedicure was efficient and luxurious - a huge benefit if you are like me and always struggling to squeeze in this little bit of self care bt work and caregiving.
