The cut was clean and precise. No rushing, no shortcuts. The price was $40 plus tip, worth it. I have passed this shop for years since it sits across from my office in Manhattan. I am glad I finally tried it. It's a low key location on the second floor so pay attention to the entrance. The vibe is relaxed and not intimidating. The guy asked me for a picture of myself, I showed him one. He did not pay attention to what he saw at all, almost shaving my hair off. You will see the guy smiling as you complain about him fucking your hair up. The prices are egregious. Don't go there. Queue up for 20 minutes and go to the neighboring the barber school instead. The haircut was uneven because I told him I have a bump on my left side of my head, so just sliding the buzzer was not going to give me an even haircut. The barber said "that's not my problem u don't have an even head." Isn't it the barbers job to make sure my haircut is even? I was visiting NYC for the weekend with my wife and needed to get a haircut. The concierge at our hotel (The Refiner) recommended Epic (after all, HE had a great haircut too). He said that there may be a bit of a wait, but that didn't bother me. A wait/line is usually a good sign. I got there and while there were a few guys ahead of me, I honestly didn't wait very long. Alan (I'm pretty sure that was his name) got me seated and after a quick discussion about what I wanted, got to work. Some barbers are really good but slow. Others are fast and not that great. Alan was right in the middle. He was quick enough without rushing, and his skill gave me the exact cut I was looking for. He has great bedside manner (we had a great conversation about all sorts of things) and again, he manages his time well. As far as pricing, I'm not sure what some of the other reviewers are complaining about. From what I'm used to, the price point was spot on. Plus, he actually charged me a little less, since he didn't touch the top, at my request (most places will charge you no matter what). From what I observed, the other customers were also having great conversations with their barbers as well, and lots of laughs were going around the shop, along with some pretty epic haircuts. I was visiting from L.A., but I lived in the City for 8.5 years prior to the west coast jump. I needed a cut closer to midtown because of where I was working while in the City and I came across this one. Saw the number of stars and decided to give it a go. While it's true that I have a "unique" haircut, my barber back in L.A. (because I travel a lot for work) made it fool proof for other barbers to maintain the cut. I was greeted quickly (that's where one of the stars came from) and was immediately taken care of. "I want a fade all the way around with a 1 and two lines in my hair." The barber -- whose name I never got -- nodded in understanding and got to work. When I got up from the chair I was disappointed. The two lines were crooked and the fade was chunky. But didn't he show it to you in the mirror? Yes. Yes, he did. But I was so taken aback by the crooked lines on the side of my head that I just wanted to get out of that chair. Not only that the cut -- which wasn't awful...it just looked like barbering was a side gig vs what this barber actually does -- was irreparable. There was no way to fix it without just balding the sides. I went to pay and he swipes my card. "Do you want to leave a tip?" "Sure." "How much?" That didn't make me feel the most comfortable. I had to let him know how much while he stood there. I honestly tipped way too much because I felt pressured. Fortunately, my hair grows quickly but if I'm ever in a pinch, it would be better to carve out time and go to Harlem. read more

First visit to Epic, and it's five stars. I was in the neighborhood with some time to kill on a Friday evening, and realized that I desperately needed a cut. As expected on a Friday night, there was a wait for one of the four chairs working that day, but nothing too bad. It gave me the opportunity to watch each of them work and watch their customers' reactions (which were overwhelmingly positive.) Allan cut my hair: lots of buzzing to cut it down, them to scissors for shaping, lots of trimmers for my neck, sides, and ears, and a blade for a few places. He was extremely detailed, didn't bother with a lot of chit-chat, and stayed focused on what I needed. Allan gets five stars, the shop gets five stars from me. I think I found my new shop, and I may get a cut more often then twice a year now! read more

HIGHLY recommend not coming to this barbershop. The guy I got a haircut from literally rushed my whole haircut to the point where it's almost unfixable. I never had a haircut that was rushed this bad. As well I was also charged $78 and it had to be voided. then I had to be charged again for it to be $40 the original price. I don't know if this was on purpose and they thought I wouldn't notice or if it was a genuine accident. Either way I highly recommend not coming here and taking your money else where. For future reference and if the owner sees this please tell your barbers that haircuts should be minimum 30mins and to take their time cutting hair. Not a ten minute haircut. I was gonna ask for a free haircut but I'm not a mean guy and understand it's the holiday and people need their money. For future references though you guys have to be better. read more

Just left this spot... it's on 6th Avenue a block from Bryant Park.. 2nd flr... you can look down at the madness of NYC. Got here for a hair trim and a hot shave. All I can say my NEW Barber..NABIL.. hit it out of the Park. Knew what I wanted with just a few words. The shave was Niiiiiiiice!!!! Shaved so closed don't think I will see hair for a month!. The shave was carefully performed.. you need a steady hand using a straight razor.. he does. NO cuts... NO Blood. LOL! Smooth. Place is quiet has a couple of parakeets that sing a long with the NYC Traffic. Should make an appt. Waves of People popped in when I was there. Will repeat. read more

I found this barbershop a few years ago just from walking off the street and I have never looked back. Monsour takes care of me and is always professional, respectful of my time and does a great job every time, even if I have a special request from time to time. The barbershop is like a normal shop where you can walk in and get a cut from one of the barbers that has an opening or if you prefer a particular barber, then you can make arrangements to go at a designated time. I'm just re-posting my same review here as on Google Reviews: So: this is not a fake review. I'm a college professor. I work on 42nd St across from Bryant Park and this has my barber shop for the last 9 or 10 years. Until a couple years ago it was called "Lana's" and it was also very good back then. Mansour took over the place now that Lana retired. When it was Lana's, Mansour was my favorite barber, but all the barbers were good and probably they still are. I actually waited 2 weeks, for Mansour to get back from vacation, so I could get my haircut there today. I don't go anywhere else in New York, ever. The staff is friendly and professional, but also efficient in the way you want from a barber in New York. I hate getting a 40 minute haircut. This place it's usually 15 minutes. Sometimes there is 10-15 minute even if you call ahead, if they try to fit too many people into their schedule, but it's still worth calling ahead to know the best time to show up. I care about this place and I want it to survive. I always add a $5 tip because I appreciate the place so much. read more

It's really unfortunate that I had to just walk out of this establishment. I've been here a few time previously and the customer service has been getting gradually worse with every experience. This even after I consistently tip well beyond 20%. Today, I went in and sat to wait for a haircut for 20 minutes. The barber only had one person in his chair. Imagine my surprise when he finished that cut and proceeded to tell me that he had an appointment on the way and would cut my hair "after he finished his breakfast." He then disappears for 5 minutes and then walks all the way in front of me to prepare his breakfast on the windowsill. This all happens as the other barbers grin about this behavior. I promptly left as they clearly don't value me as a customer and don't want my money. I've really enjoyed the cuts there. However, nothing outweighs this horrible customer service. It's a 50/50 if you go to this establishment on whether you'll be given prompt service or not. Take your chances if you'd like!
