I've been going to Eriks barbershop for 8+ years now and have never gotten my haircut anywhere else since then. Erika and his other barber is attentive and cuts your hair as you requested. erik is often in an hour before his listed opening times which helps because as a parent I'm able to get my haircut before taking my daughter to school and going to work. Erik has been terrible for me. First time there, asked him to leave 1.5 inches on top. He says he'll use a 7 guard. I tell him that's 7/8 inch, and he insists it's 1.5 inches. I don't want to argue so I just let it go. I go home to double check and I was right. I come in next time to say I want him to really give me 1.5 inches this time, explaining how the guards work. He says a 7 is 1.5 inches. I insist it's not. Then he says "then how should I give you 1.5 inches?" I suggest he use scissors (like any other barber where I've made this request). He says "then it will be even shorter." we argued back and forth. I ended up still paying for the haircut but no tip. (I never asked to have the haircut comped, so that's not his fault. I just didn't feel the service was terrible enough to merit no pay at all.) One thing I was not going to do was explain to a barber how scissors worked, after I already explained how guards worked. This is one of, if not the worst haircuts I've ever received. They charged $30 for a 5 min cut and mutilated my bangs. Hair was left patchy after they used the clippers and had to make a few adjustments once I got home. I do not recommend this place to any one. 1 star is 1 too many. read more

I have been a happy customer of Erik's Barbershop for years. The other day I decided it was time for a hair cut. I called and made an appointment with a very professional, courteous man, and made sure he was the one to cut my hair. He did a great job, was extremely polite, and a wonderful conversationalist. I didn't discover until halfway through the session that he was the son of the owner, Erik. He had been sharing about trying to finish school, but was wanting to help out his Dad at the shop. The saying in America is, "The apple doesn't fall very far from the tree" and it didn't surprise me that Erik's son would also be so good, so courteous, at the job. Since my hairstyle is very easy -- there isn't much hair left -- I have had clean-up and trim cuts performed by every barber currently working at Erik's Barbershop. How is it possible that I'm the first to review this little gem? Never a wait, inexpensive haircuts for guys who aren't sweeping their hair over their foreheads like 12-year olds. Staffed by Russian/Georgian guys with heart. I used to live right down the street, that's how I found it. I now live in Williamsburg. (Don't be hating; I don't own a fedora.) I tried to find a cheapie place for a standard guy haircut out here. Uh, yeah, right. Closest place wants 30 bucks to cut my hair. Not. So I went today. The guy who most often has cut my hair -- and who cut my hair the last time, several weeks ago -- wasn't available. However, he went out of his way to come over and ask my how I'm feeling. See, when I was there several weeks ago, I told him about my cancer diagnosis. He told me about his mother's cancer treatment and success. And he remembered. This small-town boy really relishes moments like this. A $12 haircut and a guy who remembers you. Splurge and let them shave your face sometime. That'll set you back, what? $7? $8? I'm as gay as a guy gets, and I simply can't understand paying any more than this for the haircut I need. (It also galls me to spend more than $20-25 for shoes, but that's another story.) read more

WORST BARBER EXPERIENCE IN MY LIFE! STEER CLEAR OF THIS BARBER SHOP BY ALL MEANS!!! I'm still in shock over how horrible of a job one of their barbers did on my hair this evening. As soon as I got in the chair, I made a clear & direct request for the type of fade and clip numbers I wanted. Though somehow either the barber decided to ignore my instructions, or just wasn't listening in the first place, and decided to poorly use a single clip all around and called it day without blending or fading my hair at all. After many, MANY times repeating the clip numbers I wanted him to use to fade my hair, he made a 2-minute attempt to buzz a fade and "finished". Through the mirror I could see my hair was choppy, patchy, and not blended whatsoever. I was in disbelief over how poor of a job I was getting that I had to get out of there. (Stupidly paid) then left. Once I got home, the horrible job looked worse in my mirror. I went back, demanded & got my money back. I have no idea how that barber has a license to cut, but he certainly doesn't deserve my money for the shit job he gave me! read more

This is a little convenient place and in the about two years I've been coming here I have had to wait only one time. It is cheap comparatively but the price is steadily rising. Up to $14 as of 3/2012. A few months ago was $13 and before early 2011 was $12. There are cheaper places around but with far worse service so this place is worth it. They have t.v.s for every chair too. The guys are all nice and good to talk to. They know what they're doing and I have never walked away disappointed. The general consensus is that Erik is the best, though. These guys are good at putting up with me too as I always give them a hard time about what I want. I've had guys at other places that would give attitudes and literally scowel at me for asking if they could make it a little shorter or what not after they had already cut it. Never a problem with these guys. A good place for a simple haircut. read more

Admittedly, I have high standards when it comes to my haircut. I'm specific about what I want and it's difficult to hide or fix a mistake with the cut I typically get. I walked in here and asked if they could do a flat top. The guy at the register gave me a blank stare, but the guy in the first chair directed me to the guy on the end and called out to him what I wanted. This was assurance enough for me that this guy on the end could do a flat top. He asked me how short on the sides. I told him "1" and watched his technique. Everything was going fine until he took the buzzer and went down the center of my head like a reverse mohawk. So much for flat. I think I was too stunned to do or say anything, but more importantly it was too late. I let him continue, hoping against hope that he did actually know what he was doing. Sadly, he did not. What I ended up with was essentially a crew cut, with a little more on top than on the sides. I wouldn't have even minded so much if it was symmetrical, but it is not. He made no attempt to shape the right side; it's completely rounded. But he made a failed attempt to shape the left. It's not much, but it's just different enough to be noticeable. I could have done this myself at home. Probably better. Certainly cheaper. I'm no longer in my twenties; vanity doesn't play into this as much as it might have at one time. I don't have any special occasions to go to this weekend where I need to look my best. I keep my hair short enough that I typically get it cut every two weeks, though I may be able to go three weeks this time. In other words, I'll get over this. But I will not go back to Erik's Barber Shop. Incidentally, if anyone can tell me where in Manhattan, from Midtown West down through Chelsea and the Village I can get a good flat top, let me know. read more

I came here with my son yesterday and they exceeded my expectations. There are a lot of barbershops near by but what stands out about Eriks shop is the customer service they provide. They greet you with a smile, and offer free hot towels, shoulder massages, and head simulator! My son loved his haircut, and Tatiana did an excellent and quick job for me. Got a haricut from the last guy, he did a goodjob with the haircut but I was going to get a full service cut (with towel and shape-up) I had to ask him to shorten the haircut because I had to go. He charged me $20 when everyone else's review said $12-$15 haircut. I would of gave them 4 stars but being charged more for no reason isn't nice. I didn't give him a hard time, I even tipped. This is a great place to get a haircut in Hell's Kitchen. I've been going here for years. The barbers here are very respectful and do a great job of cutting your hair. Awesome neighborhood barbershop! For years I was going to a more high end, fancy salon and stumbled upon this barbershop in my neighborhood. You rarely have to wait and when you do they have a relaxing area where you can hang out and have some bottled water. The staff is super friendly, inviting, and accommodating! They cut your hair the way you want it done and do as good of a job as any salon but at half the price! I go to Tina and she is the best! At the end of every haircut you get this amazing 2-3 minute shoulder massage that's included which caps off the haircut perfectly. I gave this place 3 chances since its close and had $12 haircuts. The first was mediocre but I figured "what do you want for 12 bucks in Manhattan?" The second was too short, but the guy was new and was trying really hard, so I cut him a break. The third was horrible and I regret it very much. It was an older guy who looked like he knew what he was doing, but my current cut can only be classified as a hair abortion. He hardly listened when I was talking to him, then rushed through in about 7 minutes, everything is uneven, and he didn't shave my neck. AWFUL. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU VALUE YOUR APPEARANCE.
