The beautiful scenery and periodic wildlife were amazing. I think the best moment was stopping off at a beach at low tide where numerous large pieces of ice from a glacier were sitting on shore. Just something I never imagined experiencing. The crew were awesome and friendly and you can't beat free snacks, tea, and hot chocolate on the boat. Definitely an adventure you should incorporate in any trip to Alaska.

All you need to do is paddle and bring a water bottle! They bring snacks, and homemade lunches that were amazing with homemade bread!! The view when you come around the corner is jaw dropping!! The staff were amazing and very personable!! We traveled by train for the second half of our journey to view multiple glaciers and animal sightings!! Moose, eagles, bear. There's an opportunity to get off the train and complete a short hike. This trip was the most expensive that we did, but we would do it again!!

Then we had a quick kayak lesson, then paddled across the water to get up close to the glacier. Once we walked up close to admire the view, we did a meaningful meditation, took some pictures, then headed down for lunch. The box lunch was plentiful and fresh. Just enough to keep us satisfied as the train went up to Grandview to see a few more glaciers and some waterfalls that you can't get to by road. All in all, Ryan and Caroline provided us with a safe and fun day that was unforgettable. Definitely the highlight of our time in Alaska.

They place a huge emphasis on sustainability, eco-tourism, and conservation, which makes my heart sing. All of the guides are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Each of the lodges is incredibly quaint and homey. They give you a backwoods vibe, but with all of the amenities. Every person we came into contact with won our hearts, especially Christine the guide, Kevin the hiking guide and ornithologist, Evan the chef, and Laredo the fishing guide. All the food is AMAZING by the way. Had such an amazing experience that I think I'll be trying to come back and work for them next summer if they'll have me.

As far as I know, 20 Mile River is the only place in Seward Highway that is officially equipped to…read morelaunch a boat from. That being said... the boat launch is pretty tore up. The asphalt ramp is essentially washed out and all that remains is our famously dangerous quicksand. So make sure you check the tide charts. I definitely wouldn't try to launch anything too large from here. This location is famous as a hooligan spawning ground, so if you like those greasy little fish, hooligan fishing here is hot when they're in season. Always check the regs, but silver and red salmon also have a bag window in 20 Mile as well. The parking lot here is adequately sized for boat trailers and RV's, however you don't get much warning on the approach. If you miss it, good luck finding a place to turn around.....

The park is tucked away in Shotgun Cove at the confluence of a glacial stream and Prince William Sound. The protected cove offers a lovely vista of mountains, water and trees (ok and a parking lot.) It's got several grills, tables and a picnic pavilion that is perfect for small gatherings. Midweek, the park is an ideal place for contemplation. The only issue here is the mosquitoes, which are significant. But if I could plunk a house down anywhere in the world, it would be right here, a little piece of paradise.

One of my absolute favorite places to spend time in Southcentral Alaska. I didn't actually…read morediscover Lu Young Park in Whittier until June of 2016. I happened to have a day off and decided to drive down to Portage area for some photography and enjoy a beautiful summer sunny day. Even though I have lived in Alaska for over 45 years, I didn't visit Whittier or go through the tunnel all that often. Maybe only a handful of times since I was young. A few times included taking the train while another was driving down there with a friend where I was riding shotgun. But something that day made me decide to pay the money to go through the tunnel and do a bit of exploring. And given I'm one with an insatiable quest for exploring, I found myself on the road to Shotgun Cove. And that is where I found Lu Young Park. To access Lu Young park drive up Blackstone Road and then turn right on Salmon Run Road just past the abandoned Bucker Building (hard to miss, one of the tallest buildings in Whittier). Continue on the dirt road for about a 1/2 mile and you will see a pull out with a covered picnic area. The area has a couple of picnic tables, bathrooms and an overlook. It is a great place to explore both at high and low tide. Additionally the area is teaming with thousands of pink salmon during their run in August. It is not uncommon to find kayakers and SUPs in the cove. There is always something different to see and experience here. During the evenings after work during the summer I like to grab a bit of food from somewhere and drive down and catch the tunnel opening and then have a picnic. It is always serenity to me.
