Matthew was a great tour guide. It was an excellent balance of entertainment and education. The trip to the AWCC was fun.

After putting together the bulk of my Alaska itinerary, I was left with some gaps here and there. And their "Wildlife and Glaciers" tours fit in there perfectly. I booked it through Viator and called a day in advance to reconfirm pickup. They just moved me to an hour earlier, which was fine. Pickup was at the log cabin/visitor center in town, which wasn't too far from my hotel. Our guide for the day, Jonathan, arrived right on time. We hopped on the bus and hit the road. Jonathan is an Alaska native and he is super knowledgeable! He even spotted some mountain goats and managed to pull over so we could get some pictures. We went straight to the AWCC where we were given about 1h45min of free time. He spent some time with us at the bears and provided us with some background info on them, before setting us loose to explore the rest of the park at our own pace. Afterwards, we hit the road again to go look at the glaciers. Although the weather was windy and rainy at times, we did manage to get out at all stops and also do the rainforest walk. Afterwards, we also made a quick ice cream stop to try the local fireweed ice cream! Once we got back into town, Jonathan offered drop-offs at downtown hotels or anywhere we preferred in that area. I went to the Alaska Museum afterwards. I definitely had a good time on my excursion and though the price/quality was very fair. read more

Our driver was a lovely and friendly person, so this doesn't apply to him. We had a terrible experience with the management. 3 things were not as advertised-- 1. It says a max of 14 people. We had less than that in our car to get there (only 4 which was great), but our glacier hike group was over that. Obviously there were lots of people on the glacier as a whole, which is no biggie, but our tour group on the glacier itself was over 14 per guide. This lead to large crowds all trying to take pictures and distracting from the nature before us. They rely on a third party to do the glacier walk, and don't have control of how many people that third party books-- would have just been nice to know/expect which is unclear in the description. 2. No provided snacks despite that being stated. We didn't expect lunch or anything because that was clearly excluded. 3. We were given the wrong start time leading us to sit in cold and drizzling rain waiting for the tour to begin. We had confirmation in various emails from TripAdvisor and Viator, including the ticket itself from Viator, with the time the morning of; leadership did not inform us of any new start times despite claims of emails. This was not that big of a deal, but when I called out to leadership they acted as if the new summer hours were obvious (they weren't as both TripAdvisor and Viator were not aware). Overall we were just frustrated at how management spoke to us when these issues were brought to light using phrases like "did we expect the glacier to be cleared just for us" which of course is not the case. read more

Summary: company is unreliable and just plainly telling lies to get few extra dollars. Details: I had very bad customer experience with the Girdwood Express service by Alaska's Finest tours & Cruises. The transfer was arranged in advance & confirmed over the phone. The evening before the transfer I got a text asking to call back the company. As I was in the sea (on a cruise) I could call back only the morning of the transfer during the cruise disembarkation. I was informed that the transfer can't be completed as arranged and must be postponed by 3.5 hours and there are no other options. I said "Well, fine". Later in the day as I realized that it's just impossible for a family to wait for over 3 hours on a gas station, I made another call to see if I can get anything earlier or at least to change the pickup point to another standard Girdwood Express pickup point at the lodge. The company said it's impossible as there is a lot of traffic due to a festival and a driver is already arranged. Both statements were just plain lies. The festival closures finished by 11AM, so there was no traffic problems (we were in the town and could see it). Also when we finally got on the bus around 6:15, the driver had no idea we are waiting for him and was just occasionally stopping as it was an unrelated excursion bus by same company. I suppose that's why company did not want the bus to go into the town to the regular stop location. The whole idea was just to get extra money instead of running proper Girdwood express. And this is even less understandable give our family paid for 4 people more than it would take to arrange a taxi from Girdwood to Anchorage. read more

We visited Alaska last week (Yes, in the winter in 12-24 degree weather!!) and booked the Turnagain Tour and Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center through Groupon...best tour investment ever! Our guide was Ben and he was super helpful, nice, knowledgeable, passionate about his role as a guide, and very down to earth! Ben made sure we got to see all the cool animals and cool spots, including mooses, eagle nests, yummy places (chocolate and reindeer sausage...yes we ate Rudolph!) and glaciers! As a native to Alaska, he knew all these fun roads and exciting detours that we previously missed when driving on our own! Big shout out to him for extending our tour time and making our first visit to Alaska memorable and treating us like family!!! Can't wait to return soon!! read more

We booked the Wildlife Conservation Center and Turnagain Arm Tour. About 5 hours long. Tina was a great tour guide. She stopped at multiple locations for 15mins or so to take pictures. I wish we would get closer to the glaciers though. This tour covered a lot however. Multiple stops and plenty of places to find gifts at gift shops. Also try a rain deer hot dog at the wildlife center! The van is also very nice and air conditioned. Comfortable ride for sure! Thank you! read more

This is going to be a long one. I had a very "interesting" experience with Ben over the phone while I find things to do in Anchorage before my visit there. First it was the discrepancies of the different tours information on their website, i.e. tour times, discounts, prices, etc. Then it was the "vagueness" of the tours information on their website. Okay, whatever, I guess. Just when I was ready to book the tour, I found out the tour pick-up location is NOT Downtown Anchorage Sheraton as indicated on their website or on Groupon. Since I wasn't renting a car (due to extreme weather conditions) and have a toddler in tow, I had to make sure the pick-up location was walkable from where I was staying. I explained to Ben that I'm visiting and will be on foot. I also told him I need to find out the address/location of my lodging to determine if pick-up was where I can get to. Ben did not allow me time to look up the address or check the map. He instead proceeded to ask me for my full name, e-mail address, etc. I was annoyed. I told him to wait because if I couldn't get there what was the point of him getting my info. It worked out though. So I booked the tour. I asked about another tour but told him I'd have to get back to him after checking with my husband's schedule since he was there for a work event. I called the next day, left a message saying I wanted to book another tour, but did not hear back. Okay, maybe he doesn't need/want my business. So I started looking around for other tour companies but Ben had a deal on Groupon that was just too good to pass up. So I purchased the Groupon deal, called and called again, trying to make the tour reservation with him. Finally we connected. I told him I got the Groupon and wanted to make a reservation for the tour. He said, "just now? You know you can cancel same-day and get your money back." By that I assumed he did not want me to book through Groupon. So I told him, "well, Groupon was running a special discount: 20% off with code." He said, "oh. Well, I could match that." And then he told me that he didn't see a Groupon sale come in on his end (turned out I didn't hit the 'BUY' button). So he asked me how much it was on Groupon with the discount. I told him $125 (approximate). He got quiet for a minute and said, "I can do it for $130." I said, "but it's $125 on Groupon. I'll just get it on Groupon." He didn't say anything. Comes back in a little bit and said, "Okay, I can bring it down to $128." Starting to get puzzled I asked him "I can just buy this deal on Groupon...Do you rather I buy through you directly instead?" He didn't respond. "Okay, I was able to get the system to bring it down to $126." Still puzzled I asked, again, "do you not want me to buy it through Groupon?" He finally replied, "I'm trying to meet you half way." I replied, "I don't see how that's meeting half way..." (he did say he could MATCH it.) Anyway, some more back and forth of this non-sense, I finally said, "fine, okay, it appears you really don't want me to book through Groupon but with you instead, alright, fine, $126, go ahead and book it." So we discussed the details a little bit and got off the phone. Shortly after I realized that I didn't give him my credit card number for this tour, and he didn't ask me for one. But, I received e-mail confirmation for the tour, AND a receipt. Before I called him back I checked my credit card transactions. There was already a pending charge for the tour I just booked. W.T.F.? I was NOT thrilled that he had my credit card number on file! So I immediately called, left a message, and sent an e-mail telling him not to keep my credit card on file. (He never acknowledged or replied so I don't know the outcome of this.) Then I went to Better Business Bureau to look up his business. C+ rating. OMG, I am most likely going to be screwed, I thought. Leading up to the tour I was worried. I was worried if the tour would happen at the time and the pick-up location as discussed; if it would be cancelled last-minute; if that happened if I would get my money back, etc. I was anxious come day of the tour. But to my surprise Ben was friendly and very knowledgeable. Although his voice didn't sound like it on the phone, I thought he had a really good tour guide voice in person. ONE star for the service before the tour and FOUR stars for during. Round up to average of THREE stars. read more

My girlfriend and I went to Anchorage for the weekend and took the Turnagain Arm tour (our first time in Alaska). It was amazing! Can't say enough how perfectly planned out the tour is. Ben (the tour guide) clearly loves what he does and is great at it. He is a native himself and was very knowledgeable about Alaska's history and knew all sorts of random facts about Alaska's nature and politics as well. We did so much in just a few hours and nothing felt rushed or dragged out at all. He kept us all entertained and involved the entire way. There were even a some cool stops he added that weren't even listed on the tour description (such as a rain forest!). Couldn't have asked for more. My husband and I did the All Around the City tour with Martin in Anchorage on our last day in Alaska. It was SO MUCH FUN and worth way more than we paid for it. Martin, a born and bred Alaskan, picked us up from our hotel in the morning. We got to see all of Anchorage, and we learned a great deal about Alaska's history, native art, and general info about life there. One thing that I especially enjoyed about the tour is that Martin didn't rush us at all. He let us wander on our own some (he never abandoned us or anything...he just let us truly take more or less time where we wished). We saw truly glorious scenery, famous biking/hiking/walking trails, a REINDEER (I mean, really, when's the last time you saw a reindeer?!?), impressive native artwork, and even a bear. He took us all along a road that is known for moose sightings, but unfortunately, the moose didn't follow our schedule, so we didn't encounter one. :). However, a black bear did run across the road right in front of us. We were impressed. I really felt like Martin tailored the tour to us. We had just returned from 3 days in the wilderness, hanging out with grizzlies, and we love animals. He made sure to share a lot of info about Alaskan wildlife with us. I got the impression that he wouldn't have focused in so much on that if we were more interested in, say...hiking or biking. We went to a giant chocolate factory with an enormous chocolate fountain. Martin took our picture in front of it for us. I know this is going to sound strange, but he took us to the local hospital too. My husband and I both work in healthcare and loved the native art. On every floor of the hospital, there were legitimate, large, Native art exhibits. On the bottom floor, there is a shop that sells all local, Alaskan artwork. Volunteers staff the shop, and the mark up is only 20% (as opposed to approximately 150% at other Anchorage shops). Martin told us that the 20% profit goes directly to Alaskan scholarship funds. It actually felt good to buy things there. (Quick tip: the shop is cash/check only, but if you forget, there's a no-fee ATM in the hospital cafeteria.) I absolutely recommend this tour over the trolley-type tours that don't even let you get out of the vehicle to experience more of the city. MOST HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! I made the horrible mistake to book a tour for me and my friend with this company and both of us regretted every second of it. From the very first call to the tour place, I was mistreated and even yelled at! I had some questions about the tour before I paid for it and they just refused to answer them claiming to be too busy to talk to me. Since the miscommunication was HORRIBLE, I ended up going to another place and almost didn't make it to the tour in time. Not because I was running late, but because they provided me the wrong address . Um, I'm literally paying you over $100 and you can't answer a few questions about your stupid tour before I do on it? Just not ok. The only reason why I still went on this tour is because they promised me I was going to see some wild life, which didn't even happen because the driver got lost and by the time we arrived at the Wild Life Center everything was closing. Allow me to say that EVERYTHING they offer on this tour you can do it on your own. They bring you places that you can definitely drive to and they extra charge you for everything. Believe me when I say that if you do it on your own you will not only save a lot of money but you will get to enjoy the beauties of Alaska way more without some rude people yelling at you. This tour company should NOT be a thing since they definitely don't know how to talk to other human beings. read more

We were able to get out of the van and take pictures with the waterfalls and even real life moose. I am not pleased with the online experience. I was under the impression that I was paying for a helicopter tour, but apparently one is not able to book a helicopter tour online (the website is not clear). The driver who picked us up was rude and not helpful, he stated there are no refunds and said he had to go. I would not have purchased this if I had known it was a boat ride. Very disappointed with the customer service. I also tried calling yesterday to confirm that it was a helicopter tour and left a message but I never received a return call. It was just a bus ride. Definitely not my style of tourism. The mobile website needs work, it is not clear what your signing up for... Extremely dissatisfied! read more

Ben, the guide, gave an Awesome tour, and he made sure we got a good view of everything available to see: moose, big horned sheep on the cliff, Glaciers, the insider scoop on the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, etc. He personalized the trip and gave me information and specifics on where to go and what to do if staying in Anchorage. It was a Super Fun and educational day, and vastly easy too, which is great when entertaining out of town guests. Wow, can't believe I'm the first to review this tour company. First of all, it's the cheapest one when you book online, a savings of over 50% compared to other tour companies. Secondly, it was great to get a local Indian tour guide. Ben was a wealth of information about Alaska and kept us entertained throughout the trip. Our friend could not go on a tour with her service animal, so he drove her around the facility and she could see all the rescued animals from his van. All in all, if you want to go see a glacier and check out the wildlife rescue, this is the way to go. We even stopped to taste fresh glacier water. Truly a fun experience. read more

My brother and I took the Glacier Tour with Ben G. and it was fantastic! Very knowledgeable guide who gave plenty of history fun conversation. We were picked up from our hotel, and along the Seward Highway took a pit stop to see some mountain goats climbing along the ledges! Once back in the van, we stopped for a snack to bring along board and proceeded to the dock. He also recommended we grab one of the available rain coats at the rear of the ship as there was a bit of rain. Great tip! On the way back, he offered to drop me off downtown to catch the last few hours of the farmers/flea market. Great tour, great service, great value. I spontaneously signed up for a tour to fill an afternoon in Anchorage. I was pleased with the pricing of the tours as well as with the knowledgeability of the tour guide (Ben). I had been scheduled to stay in the Alaska Backpackers Inn (hostel) but heard the maids talking about a bed bug problem. This was a problem for me because I was only in town for that day and needed a place to stay. On the way back from the tour I told Ben about my problem and he solved it for me. Our tour took us to some unexpected but amazing places. We stopped at the Alaska Native hospital to see Native artwork. We stopped along the roadside to take a drink from a mountain spring. Then we went to the Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Center. For a pleasant surprise, we took a trip to Whittier. Ben was very knowledgeable about the local history. He is passionate and enjoys his job and is always wanting to learn more. Bring your camera because you will get plenty of great photo opportunities. By the end of the trip, it seemed more like a friend (that you pay) taking you around. He was more than willing to go out of his way to give us the best experience. read more

I recommend this tour to anybody going to Anchorage, Alaska! Ben was a very good guide and took the time to explain local history and made sure to stop by some of the local shops to give my husband and I an A+ experience for our "Once in a lifetime trip"! We made a stop at Turnagain Art Gallery and I found my carved bear I had been looking for. The Seward Highway was amazing and we made a LOT of stops to get a ton of pictures. My sister and I took the portage glacier and wilderness tour on Friday September 2,2016 from downtown Anchorage we were lucky to get the most outstanding tour guide named Ben he was well versed on the history of Alaska, the wildlife and the local sites. He made our experience truly memorable we saw the Bore tide, a rain Forrest, salmon spawning, the portage glacier, earth quake park. He also took us to the wild berry chocolate shop and we experienced homemade candy and ice cream and then after all that he made sure we saw some mouse in the wild ...
