As a family, we were grieving, exhausted and overwhelmed at the thought of somehow having an estate sale that encompassed a home full of belongings. Hiring Afternoon Estate Sales was like waving a magic wand. They took virtually the entire burden from us. After we removed what we wanted to keep, they worked for two weeks prior to the sale; researching, pricing, organized and displayed everything and guided us through the process of the actual sale, which was very successful. But more than that, in a day where it's difficult to get the minimum of customer service, Arthur goes out of his way to deliver more than you expect. His knowledge and expertise about the Dallas area market, what is likely to sell and how to price more interesting/expensive items was invaluable. So to, his knowledge of jewelry. He discovered that several pieces we thought were costume, were in fact, quite valuable. He was also completely transparent every step of the way. I hired an antique appraiser along with Arthur, but in several cases Arthur was more knowledgeable. He found better ways to sell some silver and gold in the house as well as moved all my appliances and got a bunch for some small items that I didn't think were valuable. Finally, he was upfront with his pricing. I knew what the sale and clean out were going to cost and Arthur was honest about what we were likely to make so I could make a good decision going in. The first…read morevisit with Amy went fine, so we scheduled the sale for late July and I signed the agreement. The sale was scheduled for 7/27; closing on sale of the house had been scheduled for 7/30. On the morning of 7/21 Amy and her husband came to the house again. This meeting didn't feel right. They were dismayed that I didn't have an extra set of keys to give them, and that the carport did not have a gate that could be locked. This was the first I had heard about either of these conditions, but I told them I would get a set of keys ASAP, even though I was completely willing to let them in when needed, then leave them alone in the house if necessary (their preference to be alone). I checked the agreement that I had signed, and nowhere does it say that A & A needs their own set of keys. There was nothing I could do about the carport, but nothing more was said. Early that afternoon, 7/21, I received a text that they would not do the sale because of these two issues. Both could easily be fixed, but there was no discussion with me. I had already said I would provide keys (although everyone I mentioned this to thought it was odd), and the outdoor items in the storage sheds could either be set out the day of the sale, or simply omitted from the sale and left in the sheds. Since I do not live in TX and the closing was imminent I was desperate for this sale to happen when scheduled. I literally begged them to reconsider, and they grudgingly agreed. The sale did take place; the results were so-so, but that's not the issue. I'm aware that I was not their ideal client since I was trying to clear out the home of a pack rat and there weren't many items of significant value. If they had reviewed the pictures they took on the first visit and the additional ones that I sent and then decided it wasn't worth their time I might have had time to find someone else. But between hiring them and holding the sale they made no effort to communicate with me unless I contacted them first. And cancelling at the eleventh hour, and by text rather than phone call, was a very low blow that caused me a great deal of stress. Since others appear to have had a good experience with this company I am happy for them; I only wish my experience had been half as good.

I found a lovely patchwork quilt that I liked and realized I had left my wallet in my car so I asked the saleswoman at the front desk if I could set it down somewhere while I went to my car. She pointed to some bins behind and I put it in one and went to get my wallet. When I looked to see what I had in my wallet, I realized I was going to be a little short so wouldn't be able to make the purchase. Now not ever having used the bins before at this company, I was not aware they had a rigid rule about not being able to put things back once they are in the bin. So I go over and grab the quilt to put it back where I got it from and as I'm walking back, the saleswoman very tersely said "Mam! Where are you going with that! You cannot put that back, you MUST purchase it!" Before I could even address her she stormed off in a fit so I just went to put it back. When I came back, I simply said "I don't understand" she begins to chew me out in front of a house full of people, completely humiliating me and belittling me - I was just flabbergasted at the epic rudeness. I told her I had come to their company many times before and said I had bought many things and simply did not know about this rule. She was so rude and so unprofessional with me I was just stunned at how mean she was. She yelled "Well if you've come here before than you should know all our rules!"....I couldn't believe how unpleasant and awful she was. i just felt so confused and baffled at the weird level of hostility toward me. I had never even talked to her before. They are hostile, rude, unfriendly and I would never recommend them to anyone. Steer clear of this horrible company. I will never shop with them again. Maybe they need to train their staff a little better in how to deal with people in a professional and tactful way instead of being so hostile and off putting! Good riddance to this company!
