Wtf is wrong with female millennial servers in this state? Today I entered Epoch to find a smug young woman glare at me when I ordered without even the falseness of a customer service smile. She was chatting up two male customers inappropriately who were ahead of me. "What do you both do" and other questions more likely to be heard at a networking meetup. She didn't even bother to say hi. She took my name for the order and then yelled out TEA when it was ready (lukewarm it was). Engaged in convo I didn't hear the TEA shoutout. Several minutes later another MINT TEA which I recognized as my order. When I inquired why didn't you use my name like you did with the other customers she snootily answered oh well with a shrug next time. No chickie there won't be a next time. When will you bar coffee place owners start training your personnel in manners. read more

This place serves Wild Gift coffee, and the barista that created me was super friendly--enough to get it four stars for sure. Honestly, the only reason that I'm not giving it five is the fact that the vibe took me back ten years. That's not a huge deal to me, but the place just seemed kind of cluttered and basic; definitely not a comfortable atmosphere I want to hang out in for an hour. Also, for you Grammers, don't expect to be taking any cool, all white minimalist photos with tons of natural light. This isn't the place for that. However, if I'm picking between the quality of the product and the aesthetic of the place, I'm choosing quality every time. Too many places in Austin get good reviews simply for a photo-worthy wall, while their food and drinks are lackluster at best. To sum this review up, I'm not driving out of my way to get Epoch. However, if it was on my way to work or if I was in that area, it would probably be my first choice for a cup of coffee to go. I'm not sure what it is about this place, but I feel like every time I step foot in it I am being silently judged by the baristas, like they don't think I'm jiggy-enough-with-it to be in their presence. I don't know much about coffee, or Austin for that matter. But I am Muslim, and I have never felt more love for a business. Just seeing the sign on the door featuring a hijabi with the words "We Welcome Everyone" warmed my heart and made me smile. Let me tell you a thing - this place is just the cutest. Everybody already knows that I have a favorite coffee shop in Austin, but I decided that I could have a south Austin favorite and a north Austin favorite, but the south Austin favorite is still number one. Wait, maybe they can be tied for first because I don't want either of them to feel second best. It doesn't matter what time of day I come here - the staff members are just straight up adorable. They ask you about your day and they care about your answer; heck, they'll even have a full on conversation with you! The standard, "Hi, how are you?" is not just an automated response here; it's a genuine question backed by real curiosity. Call me a sucker for human warmth, but, well... okay, I'm just a sucker for that kind of thing. (When I worked in retail, I tried to do the exact same thing because seeing someone's face light up when they see that you are actually engaging them as a person instead of treating them as yet another customer is positively wonderful. It's the little things that matter most, you know?) They serve Cuvée coffee here, which is my favorite type of coffee and pretty much the only coffee I will drink. I went from never drinking coffee to only drinking one specific brand of coffee. My brain is so silly sometimes. The one time I ordered a hot chocolate, I asked if they could sprinkle cinnamon on the top because that is my favorite way to drink hot chocolate, and they informed me that they use a Mexican chocolate that already has cinnamon in it. They did not lie and that hot chocolate just might be my favorite hot chocolate in Austin. Then there's the story of how I went on one of the cutest first dates ever - I suggested Epoch because it was centrally located to my office and his apartment. As we were ordering, I mentioned that this was our first date and the barista said, "No way. You're kidding, right?" I laughed and told him, no, I was not kidding. "I never would have guessed. It seems like you two have known each other for forever." I took this as a good sign since I had literally met this guy not one minute before that exchange. The date went very well and we stayed there chatting for some time. At some point, maybe two hours in, the same barista walks to our table with a slice of cheesecake and says, "Because it seems like your first date is going well." My heart melted right then and there. How thoughtful is that? He brought us a slice of cheesecake because our date was going well. I just can't get over how sweet that gesture was. I just can't even with how cute this place is and how warm and fuzzy it makes me feel inside. Everyone here is so thoughtful and kind and genuine and there's something about that that I just love. I live for those connections, however small, because it's those connections that keep us all going at the end of the day, and any place that makes my inner social worker sing has found a forever fan in me. read more

I like Epoch coffee still. Clean lines, fast wifi, great A/C, new outside seating. I haven't resampled food and I'm not going to buy those pastries sitting there since 8am. Here's the gig though. It's been 7 months and that bathroom is still a broken down mess. The door to the second stall is still off. The towel dispenser is hanging open like a gaping maw with sodden roll of towel on top. The one bathroom that does function has grimy floors and the TP is off the roll sitting on the handicap bar. There are 30 people in here and one lonely barista trying to do it all which makes wait times long and her life miserable (I'm sure.) I expect some of these things at the old location which is arguably less put together but I thought they'd fix some of these things in the half year they've been open. read more

We stopped by last night during their soft opening. Okay, it was more that we saw the open sign and then we saw ourselves teleported in immediately, because it's Epoch and we have been greatly anticipating its opening. The new Epoch Coffee is located between Madam Mam's and Lofty Dog just southeast of the Alamo. They had a light menu and were obviously still working out kinks but the space is open, clean and modern. Plenty of tables and a wide open bar for grabbing coffee and pastries. They said they'll be making sandwiches in house. I ordered a pastry from Russell's which is always amazing and my husband got the spicy, strong chai, which is also being made in-house. All in all, a great late-night addition to the Village area in a place that sorely needs late-night coffeehouses. I look forward to spending lots of time here! read more

After several trips to Epoch, I'm finding less of a reason to come back. I get that Starbucks has all their food pre-packaged but a local joint that can't make you a fresh freaking sandwich??? You're local and can't afford the time to make a cheese sandwich? I'll pay extra to support a local establishment but not to get the same crap I can get at Starbucks but with less attitude. I've been coming to this location since it opened and have been surprised how a friendly and helpful staff has become so pretentious. They used to a have a grilled cheese sandwich with avocado that I loved. When I arrived today, the menu had changed and now the cheese sandwich had pesto on it. I asked if I could hold the pesto on my sandwich and got a look as if I had asked to have a boil removed. I was also informed by the guy at the counter that the sandwiches were pre-made and could not be changed. I'll spend my money on a local establishment in the future that is fresh and cares a bit more about their customers. read more

Sometimes it's hard to find the perfect chill ambience in a coffee shop. Epoch on W. Anderson does not disappoint in the ambience department. I often come here to do some work/read/relax if I'm in the area and find myself extremely productive. Maybe it's because the coffee is freaking delicious, or that their gender-neutral restrooms are clean, or that the baristas are hella friendly. Yes - it's all of the above! In the back of the shop, there's a calm and serene koi pond that's perfect for meditating or chatting it up with your BFF. I cannot recommend this place enough. Do yourself a favor and order yourself a pot of the Turkish Mint tea. I guarantee you will be marveled. read more

I just edited my review to 0 stars cuz the guy at the front harassed me and RUDELY came over and said "did you need to order???" And I said I already had a drink and he was like "not since I've been here and we're getting busy........." And that was the most rudest thing I've ever encountered with a business like how many drinks do u want me to get when I go somewhere??? I understand it's a business, but I already ordered something! Horrible employees! This guy had a typical weird austin beard and glasses. This place is a joke. I asked him like am I supposed to order after a certain period of time? Like what is this, buy 1 thing every hour? I've gone to a lot of places to study and this is gross customer service. I think he thinks I'm lying about getting a drink earlier, but that's HIS greedy little problem not mine! I got a chai tea latte with almond milk and 3 splendas. It didn't come with one of those pouring thingies, I guess that's just for the regular plain teas. The drink wasn't hot like I like it. Right when I brought it to the table I could drink it right away and considering it was so cold outside I really wanted it hottt, but it wasn't at all so that was pretty weird..they need to turn up the heat on their machines. Great little coffee shop. I often forget it's there since the storefront doesn't directly face the street. Coffee is good and they even have patio seating. Of course, free wi-fi (a must at any coffee shop.) I haven't had any food, so can't rate that. I will say it is a quiet space, at least the times that I've visited (over 10 probably.) If you want to have a networking meeting, the tables are close together and you might feel like everyone is listening in. But if you need a quiet space to work on your own, this is a great one. read more

What the F is a cortado? I didn't know, so I ordered it. And surprisingly, I liked it. I still don't know what it is, so don't ask me. This is another version of the ever so popular, open 24 hour coffee shop on North Loop. This one is not open 24/7, they have human hours. I like this new location. Its in the Village Shopping Center (near the Alamo DH). The inside needs help. It doesn't feel like a coffee shop. It needs some pizzazz! Something to set it apart. But there is plenty of seating which the other location will never have due to its proximity to campus. They also have a small kitchen, therefore a lot more options for food here. An outside patio is available for smokers and nice weather observers. On a strange and sadder note: To add to Kelly S's review, the women's restroom is the saddest restroom I've ever seen. There is one stall, and the 2nd one has no door on it. The bathroom reminds me of a bare, sad hospital bathroom. They don't even have good hand soap. They've got that 99cent shit from HEB in there. I keep giving this place a shot over and over hoping it will get better...but it doesn't. Keep in mind I drink black coffee. I hate anything in my coffee, so if you're looking for mochas or lattes, my review probably won't help you. My iced and hot americanos were disgusting every time I ordered them. They looked like dirty water, and tasted worse. I tried the iced coffee thinking maybe I'd just stay away from the espresso. It's not much better. For some reason both the americanos and iced coffee have a horribly bitter/I-don't-even-know-how-to-describe-it taste. It's not a flavor in coffee with which I'm familiar. And I've worked in two coffee shops and been drinking coffee since long before I should have started. I'll admit that while I do appreciate certain coffees more than others, I'm able to appreciate/stand pretty much any coffee, anywhere. I had to throw out my almost-full iced americano, and the others I drank more of basically because I was there with a friend, I paid for them, and I knew that they weren't going to make them any better. But I didn't finish any of them. I'll also agree on the comments about the attitudes of the employees. I often feel like I'm an inconvenience to them. The only reason I keep coming here is because I meet a friend about once a week, and she likes this place (for the mojos) and it's a good in-between meet-up. I'm thinking I'm gonna have to request a new meeting place. If you're in the mood for tea, however, go for it. Even if you're not...go for it. read more

So- I love coffee shops. I especially love coffee shops with sofas ( really the only way to work). I love a barista that can make a really good latte. I love a reasonably quiet place to work and chat. This Epoch new location hits all of those on the nose. My soy latte was so delicious- really really good espresso, creamy milk- that I didnt even need sugar ( and that's saying a lot for me.) The only downside. It's already way too popular. The line to get coffee stretched around the bar and halfway to the door. We waited about 45 mins before daring to get in line. Also ( and I am sure its because they are new) they were out of almost everything- mocha syrup, decaf beans ( mine was the last.) Being popular can have its downsides sometimes, but I am sure that it will work out the kinks for the future. read more

Favorite coffee shop to go to in Austin! Used to go to the one on North Loop, but have been going to this one since it opened since it's closer to me! The atmosphere of the new location is different, it has a more modern, lively feeling to it vs. the original location, which has a cozy homey feeling, but love both locations! Epoch has a great friendly atmosphere, from the baristas to the background music playing. They also have a bookshelf with some books and a bunch of board games to play and some couches on the side if you want to have a place to hangout with friends! Their coffee and tea are top notch! I have tried a variety of teas and coffees here and all have turned out great! Would especially recommend their Gaba oolong tea (served by the pot) or if you need some extra energy for the day try the cuvée coffee! Have yet to try the pastries! read more

This place is very hip, as in, you will feel very out of place if you do not sport facial hair and use a mac. The workers are hip, hairy, and obnoxiously abrasive , just like the workers at the original Epoch. You don't come to see smiling people, because it is not hip to smile. On the outside it looks like a small, hole in the wall, but when you open the doors you're welcomed by spacious room that extends to the back and fragrant roasted coffee. We stopped in to have our dose of coffee and catch up time with family after having dinner. The one thing I love about this place is that it's by some of my go to restaurants without even having to drive. Coffee after eating and a long day is a must need. We got 2 Americanos and I got the ice coffee with a little bit of their mojo. I was originally going to get their mojo coffee but the lady taking my order said it's sweetened and a good amount of heavy cream. I'm a black coffee type of girl is what I told her and she suggested adding small amounts of the mojo into my iced coffee. I agreed and loved it. It was just enough to take my black ice coffee a slight tint down. There's games, books, and plugs by the walls to enjoy entertainment or company with friends and family. SERVICE I don't like to hand out 2-star reviews just based on service but man, this guy was so verbally passive-aggressive I wanted to just hand him a stack of post-it notes so he could write down his thoughts rather than muttering them under his breath in a way we both knew I could still hear him. A pot of tea is $4, and I settled on a warm genmaicha to counter the cold and misty weather outside. Best coffee in town!! The staff is super friendly. The atmosphere is chill--you can work quietly or chat with a friend easily. LOVE the iced lattes. And I just got an iced mojo--kinda like a Vietnamese iced coffee but if you have the barista halve it with some regular coffee it's less sweet (what I like) and oh my gosh, delicious!!! So with all due respect, I'm so glad you don't like Epoch 13 because your sad existence and inappropriate phone use / addiction need not be anywhere around me busting out selfish negative vibes during my enjoyment of my daily iced coffee. I go there pretty much every day and have for months now, and there is NEVER a need for me to be on the phone while ordering drinks or food here or anywhere else, and coincidentally enough, never a service problem. What's hilarious is you write a scathing first review, then freaking go BACK only to write another one? Do you know how stupid that looks? That, and as others here mention, you claiming that you need to be told to not be on a phone when ordering? That's one dense cranium on those shoulders dear. What's more, you air it all out on a public website and advertise yourself. As for the service, you reap what you sow. I've always had superb interactions, especially from Ben and the sweet "pregnant" woman. The way I see it, you're lucky she didn't verbally kick your ass and that I wasn't behind you in line to do the same. read more

There is definitely a lot going for this location. There is plenty of seating in the inside and the wifi seems to be fast and reliable. I also enjoy the outdoor seating in the back quite a bit as it has this tucked away garden feel to it. With that said I really feel that coffee is not the star here. That's not to say that its not good - which it definitely has been. i just don't feel that they really offer a lot in the way of variety. Nor do they showcase the offerings that they do have very well. There is chalkboard menu with some things and other things on the paper menu stands at the register. I think displaying a single complete menu would go a long way in drawing some more appeal to the place. read more

In comparison to the original Epoch, I'm a huge fan. There's parking, open tables, and light! And the bathroom doesn't scare you. High fives all around. I'm still a fan of the other Epoch, but this one suites me a bit more. They offer Cuvee coffee and will brew it up via Chemex or Clever. The drip coffee is cheap, and refills are only $1. The mocha here is still good, but you can only go Mexican mocha. The beloved mojo is still here as well. They've got solid food menu (from what it seems), but it's only available until 3pm. Big space. Most tables are only for two people, so it's not great for big groups. There's some nice couch space and bar seating here also. The wi-fi can be spotty though, so that's one knack on it. Epoch's expansion, Circa 13 is ok... just ok. I REALLY like the original Epoch... it's pretty much got the coffee shop game on lock... this one... feels too clean... and kindof empty. That emptiness is what I'm basing this review on. The staff at Epoch are always chill and great people... and the coffee is always great as well.... but this place is just missing something... the character that the original Epoch has.. it's just not there. If you're at Korea House or in the area and don't want to travel to get coffee, this is a great spot...and definitely better than the Starbucks just a few blocks away... but otherwise, I wouldn't really go out of my way to go here. read more

This place is very different from the North Loop location, but not in a bad way. It's just different. There's lots of seating with 2 top tables, bar seating, and a section with couches and armchairs for relaxin'. When I got there, nobody was at the counter for me to order but he popped out from the back after a bit and apologized. Genuine smile, so, of course, he was forgiven. I always get the Mexican mocha or an iced Mojo from Epoch so I got the Mexican mocha to see how this one compared to the original location. Crazy tasty! This location has a more modern feel to it than the other location, which is nice...I like having diversity without having to sacrifice deliciousness! Four stars means that I liked it AND I'm coming back here preferentially when in the area :) Because there are no coffeeshops in North Austin as awesome as Epoch and as accessible! The coffee, tea, and food selection is good, but that's not why you come to Epoch! You come here because you need some downtime, maybe on a couch, with some wifi and isolation. Or you come here because you need a quiet place to chat with a friend or three. Or you can come here to play games with folks. It all works at Epoch. Where to begin? The espresso, the pour over coffee, the home made simple syrups, the hot tea selection, the house made kombucha, the food, and even the staff are 100% LEGIT. - Great place to study - Great Coffee - The customer service does not meet my expectations though. This place is a great place to study or work on anything. There are a lot of tables that are available before the evening and is pack usually at night. When I came there, it was empty and there were several places to study. During this time, I didn't purchase anything yet. When it started to get more busier, one of the cashier or possibly owner walked towards my friend and I to tell us "This place is getting crowded, either get something or get out!" I thought this was incredibly rude, but I do understand a business is a business. I would appreciate it if he asked us if we wanted anything to drink. Espresso: excellent. VASTLY superior to what they serve at their N. Loop location. They serve Cuvee here, and serve it properly. I went back to N. Loop recently, and they still serve the same swill there. If you appreciate good espresso, stick with the Circa 13 location. I'm not sure why they don't upgrade their stuff at N. Loop to match, but they must have their reasons. Wi-fi: generally good, but have had intermittent drops Outlets: decent -- most locations near walls have access to some Seating: very well arranged, most chairs/tables, some stools, and a mellow lounge area Cafe: clean, simple decor -- upscale hipster rather than their N. I've been a regular at Epoch for a little over a year now. I keep coming back because the atmosphere is chill, the house-made chai is good, and the baristas are friendly and knowledgeable. Yes, the music selection is quirky-sometimes they play a little too much Kate Bush or have an odd mix going on in the background-but it's rarely too distracting for getting work done. They're working on being more personable by asking names and having more conversations with customers, and most of their baristas are coming from other coffee shops around town. I haven't yet had a reason not to return. The plentiful parking and convenient north location are also big wins. read more

I was getting my truck serviced down the street. I walked 1.1 mile to get here. as I walk in everyones face is in a book or phone or laptop but there was extra conversation at the counter. the host was super nice and extra chatty. they seemed to enjoy what they did. I was able to find a small table for myself and laptop in seconds. people came and went, I stayed for an hour and a half waiting on my truck. after I cooled down I got a cup of regular coffee. their price said something different than he charged me. he charged me less. super nice guy. I got a refill and it was another $1, so in the end, I think I paid exactly what it was worth. regular cup of coffee on a hot day should be free but they have bills to pay. lol the music was exceptional cool. I tried to shazam but too much back noise. if im in the area and need an a/c'd building and sip on something, I will stop by. read more
