Quaint coffee shop with delicious coffee. Seating inside is extremely limited, so unless it's warm enough to sit outside, you might not be able to grab a seat. I'm subtracting a star because while they have cashew milk, which is great for people with food restrictions or dairy allergies, when I asked if they would make a cashew milk latte on the same equipment as a dairy latte, the barista said they did, and didn't offer another option. I ended up just ordering a house coffee and put cashew milk in, which was fine, but it would have been nice to have a safe latte to drink. read more

A very nice roast. Very straightforward flavors, nicely balanced with spice notes. This place is tucked away next to Ninkasi and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Only doing take away orders, but they have covered outdoor seating. A generous outdoor space and sometimes a pop up event for the weekends. The staff are professional and courteous, but they have found a way to go beyond that and have a way of saying "Welcome to our space". A good place start an exploration of the Whitaker neighborhood. Which is very much worth exploring. Their set up for credit and debit cards is contact free, which is nice. But I forgot to add tip, as the screen was not in front of me. It would be awkward to ask each patron if they want to add a tip. So maybe as the pandemic fades they might rethink that part. Nice baked goods. A very nice experience. read more

I was so excited to find out this place is only a couple minute walk from my home, and has such a cute courtyard. Well, I just got back home from trying it for the first time and it was a very poor experience. The two working acted as if they'd rather be doing quite literally anything other than take my order/make my drink. I went well before closing and there wasn't a single other customer there, I was looking forward to getting one of their baked goods and trying a drink they recommended But the one taking my order was very curt and rude and I just ended up ordering a simple latte so I could leave. I understand everyone has bad days and it's hot out, but there wasn't even minimal effort to even crack a smile. I felt very unwelcome and like a burden so I probably won't be going back as there are plenty of other coffee options in the Whit with kind staff. Also be aware they only have cashew milk as an alternative, the up charge for flavor is ridiculous, and it's very sour tasting which I know is what it's "supposed to be" but something to be aware of beforehand. read more

I have traveled all around the world and lived in Itlay for some time. This place is a hidden gem! You will not find better coffee, PERIOD! The gentleman that helped us was very friendly and informative, and very knowledgeable about coffee. Said he had lived and worked on several different coffee farms around the globe. Explained to us all about the sugar cane process they use in Colombia to extract the caffeine and how it compares to other methods. decaffeination processes used. I discovered Equiano's coffee at a different operation that uses their beans. When my usual place turned out to close on weekends, I went straight to the source, the Equiano location in the Whitaker. They have a good setup for this COVID era. You can order at a table in the doorway of their very tiny building, and pay with a contactless credit card reader. Your order comes out at their side door next to their patio. It's the old Vanilla Jill's seating area that's down home but pleasant. The espresso was outstanding, really really good , service was great , the pastry was amazing . I bought beans and they are really good . I would have given a 5 star rating but i didnt because..... We had never been to Eugene before and we were going to be on the other side of town from Equiano so i asked the owner for a recommendation for other good coffee across town and her reply was only her shop and gave me a weird look . I said really you cant recommend another good coffee besides yours . She shrugged and mumbled something . I find this sad . I LOVE good espresso and a finely pulled shot so coffee tasting is high on my list . In Portland a coffee shop owner will write down a list of names of shops and baristas ! My mom took me here early Saturday morning. She raved about the coffee and how she has supported the owner's business since his early days prior to this brick and mortar shop. We walked in and were the only two in the shop said good morning to the girl working. There was not one word back from the employee. She gave a half grimaced smile/sneer and went back to the iPad in front of her. As I was looking at the menu board and talking to my mom about what we should order, I glanced at the employee and she literally looked at me, rolled her eyes, frowned and looked back at the iPad. I said to my mom we are leaving. Went to Red Barn and had a great time thanks to their awesome, friendly and super staff. Since when is the above mentioned behavior acceptable from an employee to a customer? Our fix to this scenario was to move on to a different place. Afterall, we have lots of choices now in Eugene. Unlike growing up in the Whitaker District as a kid in the 70's. I"m writing this for the owner to process because my mom respects him and told me he is a really great guy. This type of practice can kill a business very quickly. I've seen it happen first hand at a place I used to work. Please track her attitude and possible comments. I am familiar with this roaster's past work and I was thrilled to hear about his new project. I just got my first bag of Equiano beans, and I'm thrilled with the beautiful aroma and complex flavors. It is so smooth! I was lucky enough to get some of the Gesha variety and it's delicious! I'm bummed out that my expresso machine is broken, but we made some excellent pour-over coffee with it. I love seeing the photos of Okon planting Gesha coffee plants on Colombia, and knowing that this business works with farmers in an envoronmentally-conscious way.
