I'm not a big cyclist, so you wouldn't think I'd wind up in this store. But I DO ski, and one of my son snowboards, so we do get here once in a while. My latest visit was to help someone find boots that fit. Her build (short, strong calves) requires a wider boot cuff. Most boots don't fit, so we were getting panicked about finding her something. The gentleman helping us (didn't get his name) was extremely helpful. Most important, he was honest. While he said her situation isn't uncommon, they didn't have a lot of boots in stock, and unfortunately, didn't have one that fit her. I appreciate that he didn't try to sell us something, or to come back some other time in the distant future, etc. We had found a different place that had a boot that fit her - he suggested we get it. Service like that will get me to come back in next time I need something they offer. The store, otherwise, is clean and well organized. Their health precautions were extraordinary - we actually had to wait inside as they seemed to be limiting customers to how many attendants they had working. I had no problem waiting. Their selection is good. Prices can feel high - but they carry quality products. If you want cheap stuff, you'll want to shop elsewhere. read more

I bought an e-bike a week ago. I worked with Bobby and he was excellent. He listened to what I needed in a bike and bike rack. I love my adventon pacer 500 and Thule bike rack. Bobby even put it on my car for me and showed me exactly how to do it. Bobby knew a lot about the bikes and was very patient with me. BUYER BEWARE - don't purchase from Erik's Bikes, Madison West We purchased a brand new $1800 Aventon e-bike for our daughter to ride at college. In less than 2 months, the brakes failed and she was in an accident because the bike failed to stop when a car swerved in front of her. When we took the bike back to Erik's, the service tech was shocked at all of the maintenance that needed to be done on the brakes and alignment. He commented that it "looked like someone had tried to do a home improvement project on it." We didn't work on the bike, this is how it was sold to us. When we asked to return the bike, we were told that we were outside of the return window and the manager said his tech was being dramatic. Bottomline is the bike was not safe, it was not assembled properly and as a result my daughter's safety was compromised. read more

We stopped in looking for a bike for my aging mom. We were not planning on purchasing anything just yet. BUT we had such wonderful one-on-one customer service from the moment we walked in the door that we ended up purchasing that day. The young clerk was so patient with my mom and helped her figure out what she truly wanted in a new bike. But wait it gets better. . . When we came back to pick up the bike the next day, I decided to ride the bike home instead of trying to stuff it into the back of my truck. About 3 blocks away the rear gear change came off and ended up entangling with the chain into my rear wheel and brakes. My husband was able to come pick both me and the bike up and get us back to the shop. We didn't even get to vocalize the entire story of what happened before the manager was brought in on the problem. We ended up walking out of the store with another brand new bike, it was even an upgrade, and a sorry for the inconvenience! Some of the BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE I have had in years!!!! I had a vey knowledgeable and helpful service person (Corey) help me sort through all the research I had done on higher end electric bikes on Sat, and I took a night to think it the final decision over. Then, when I was ready to place order for $6000 bike, computers were down and they asked me to call the next day before coming in to make sure they were working. I got Andrew on the phone who was surprisingly rude and antagonistic that I was calling vs. just stopping in. He was almost hostile, as I explained what I had been told to do. I did not place that order with them-$6300, and I want to know that I can follow up with service and feel comfortable there. These bikes are hard to come by, so I'm sure they won't miss my business; they've got the buyer over a barrel. No reason to be so obnoxious though. read more

Since I moved to Madison, I hadn't found a good bike shop, but this weekend that changed! I called ahead to make sure they could do repairs on my bike and they were very kind and welcoming. I took my bike in, consulted for 5 minutes and was happy to drop the bike off with Chris, the technician. He said it would be about a day, but 5 hours later they called me and it was ready for pickup! They replaced the chain, sawed my bike post and made sure everything was well-tuned. Checking out took only minutes. They offered to load my bike in my car and I kindly declined, but what a lovely offer! If you're on Madison's West side, this is the best place around. read more

Glowingly positive experience! Amazingly helpful staff. The associate we worked with was super friendly and helpful (let's see, it was either Ben or Owen, don't recall his name exactly). He was great though, knowledgeable and answered questions without attitude, was just as excited to sell us a bike as we were to buy one! We had been looking for an Aventon electric bike because their $2k-range bike has been getting glowing reviews in value-for-money. First i went to Lenny's, where the salesman there was bizarrely rude and borderline insulting. He told us Aventon only sells their bikes online. Which is 100% wrong. I walked in to Erik's, and within 5 minutes had seen the two models of Aventon i was most interested in. 5 minutes later, i was on one of them taking a test ride on the bike path nearby. Erik's made it one of the easiest purchases ever, by answering my questions with genuine knowledge of this major brand, and by showing genuine enthusiasm for our purchase. Add to that the excellent Erik's warranty that is added to the manufacturer warranty, and it is a complete no-brainer. That's how you make a sale and how you get repeat customers... by stocking great products, having great sales people, and having great after-purchase support. Erik's is the real deal! Don't waste your time at Lenny's, it will legit make you feel bad about buying an e-bike. I had to take a shower. Skip that bummer entirely and do what we did, head over to Erik's. read more

I'm hardly a biker so going into the shop to have work done is a little intimidating as I'm out of my element. Everyone I've encountered here has been super friendly and helpful. They did a great job servicing my troublesome hydraulic brake system and made sure everything was in great shape for this riding season. Pricing was more than fair. I also picked up a new helmet while I was there and they were very helpful with showing me pros and cons of different styles. Nice prices on the new bikes too. I was in the store recently to look at mountain bikes with and for my son. We had never been there before and my teenage son asked one of the employees for some help. The employee then asked in a curt manner if he wanted a hard tail or full suspension and what size. My son and I are just learning so he didn't know how to respeond. He did tell the employee that he was looking at a bike frame around 19". The man replied that only Trek deals is inches. What kind of response is that? I have been in sales for thirty years. Be nice and educate us and maybe you'll make a sale. He then asked us what was our price range was. I told him the number and he abruptly said that he had nothing even close to our number. ( I just glanced at their website and saw a few bikes a tad above the number I gave him.) We said thanks and left. He had no interest in trying to sell us a bike or even act friendly. Spent $2,300 on an awesome Specialized Stumpjumper here. Friendly service while I was looking to spend 2 grand, however not so friendly post purchase. I found out 9 months later at a different bike store that my $2,300 purchase had been built incorrectly. An incorrect bolt was used on the front fork, which therefore stripped the fork to brake caliper connection. I had to pay $250 to buy a new front fork so that my disc brake could be safely secured. Erik's bike shop told me there was nothing they could do, because "anyone" could have stripped the front fork, even though the bike was built at Erik's. All I received was a gift card for my troubles... Not reimbursement for the fork that was ruined, or the labor for installing a new fork. I would not go out of your way to buy a nice bike here. I love the bike, but amateur build and poor post purchase customer service was unacceptable. If you want to spend a decent amount of money, go somewhere else. read more

Could not have been more Impressed by Andrew and the staff! I came in A week before Christmas and about a minute after they opened the store and was greeted right away. I wanted to find a snowboard for myself, my 7 year old daughter and a set of skis for my 9 year old son and I knew absolutely nothing about any of it. Andrew not only was able to help me over the next hour with knowledge and products but also turn into superman and help other customers at the same time while still attending to my needs. The mechanics are Erik's west(Mike and Chris) are amazing. I trust them explicitly to determine what my bike might need when they are tuning it up. I never feel they take advantage and suggest things that don't really need to be done. They are responsive and quick to fix things. I bought my bike from Trek 10 years ago, but felt they were really snooty- perhaps my bike wasn't high end enough for them. I feel bad about the review I wrote earlier. After posting it, I went back to Eric's and spoke to the manager. He assured me the problem would be resolved and his staff would be more responsive. I then had a very pleasant exchange and purchased my pedals. I forgot about the review I posted. I have been back several times always with good results. My son needed to size up from 12" to a 16" bike and we also wanted to get a coaster bike for my daughter. Zach and team were great to work with! They helped ensure we were in the right size, were patient as my kids picked out colors, helped us test-ride out both, and even found a great Specialized used option for my son. Bought a new bike here and was very satisfied with the bike and service. The biggest plus was that they had the appropriate size and color bikes I was interested in, in stock, and the bikes I tried out were tuned up perfectly for the test rides. Store is also spacious and clean (kind of refreshing if you've been to Budget downtown, which is the opposite). While I know Erik's in general isn't technically "local", it's still a midwest-based chain and that's good enough for me. I also like the Specialized bike brand in general - nice to have more options than the ubiquitous, kinda-boring Treks you see all over the place. Only downside is that the guy who checked me out (after a good experience with the test ride guy) was just a tad bit awkward. Might have been new. read more

I recently bought a bike at the Madison West store and had to return there because the gears weren't shifting right. The service manager, Mike B. was FANTASTIC! As I waited, he went through various options and adjustments to see what could be causing the issue. He rode the bike around the store to see if the problem was fixed. Went in to look for a new bike seat and lights and check out the bike selection. There were very few customers and no one spoke to is, greeted us, or even acknowledged us until we had been at the register for over 5 minutes. I even had time to do a search to see if the products I was purchasing were cheaper online (they would have been if there weren't a sale on bike seats). I then had to say thank you to the cashier to verify I was all set to leave. Awful customer service, disappointing for a good local shop. read more

I recently bought a vintage bike and after reading reviews of local shops, decided to take it to Erik's on the west-side. Everyone at the shop was pretty friendly early on and gave me some great info on the bike. They encouraged me to leave the bike there because they wanted to evaluate what needed to be done and have the service manager like it over. They also presented me with a few options on packages and informed me of the cost for each (neglecting to tell me that parts were not included in the price as I would come to find out). After three days I called because I still had not heard from them. I was informed that my bike had not been looked at as of yet and instead of saying they would rectify the situation and call back, the service tech decided to go into a 5 minute pitch of a nearly $300 service package. All I wanted was new tires and to have the drive train cleaned so as to have the bike in working order. Not only did Erik's completely neglect my bike for three days but they also tried to do nothing else then up sell me on every package available instead of listening to what I actually wanted. I will be picking my bike up ASAP and going to one of the other bike shops in town. Thanks but no thanks Erik's. Advice, learn to listen to your customers and keep your word and service in a timely manner. read more

I've been waiting for the winter season so I can go snowboarding, and since I work near the west side, I decided to check out some boots and bindings on my lunch break. Andrew S was very polite, he greeted me with a smile and asked me if there was anything he could help with. I explained I had purchased a board last year at the east side store and didn't have enough to buy the boots+bindings at the time. We went over a couple different choices based on price, ride style, etc and was very knowledgeable and patient with me. He explained every different type of boot/binding and the pros/cons for each one. He thanked ME for MY patience and seemed delighted to help from the moment I was in the door. I was the only customer in the store at the time so I felt like I was taking up their time, but I want Andrew to know that his enthusiasm and friendliness made a huge impact on me. I left the store very happy, and I feel like the gear I chose is the right fit for me. If there's any way you could recognize Andrew for his hard work, please do so.
