TL;DR packed my wife's bike in under two hours for the cheapest quote in 10 miles. Longer unnecessarily detailed review: My wife has been talking about her childhood bike for almost half a decade. It was the one thing she ever had that was hers alone. It came from a local manufacturer in Florida and she cherished that bike. I have spent the last two years trying to con my wife into letting me just get her a similar bike. We live in an incredibly bike friendly city (for the US) in California and we downsized to one car a few years back. We really like to ride for transportation on weekends. For a number of reasons, primarily the bike has sat for literally 30 years in a Wisconsin shed, and it would cost more to ship then it was worth, and I would spend thousands to spend a week restoring an ancient bike. I don't know if you ever had experience with a person with autism who has a fixation but if you do then you know. She could not be reasoned with, cajoled or bribed. I called wheel and sprocket Middleton first. The guy who answered the phone (my apologies I forgot every name the moment I heard it bad habit) explained he could pack it in a box but didn't recommend shipping if I was flying back. He told me I could check it as luggage instead. He told me this would take a couple days as they are busy with the back to school crowd. I thanked him for his time and hung up. I spent the next 20 minutes calling the airline, a shipping company and two competitors. Everything he told me on the phone is true. It is miles cheaper to get it packed and put on luggage than shipping. It does fit within standard luggage dimensions. He was also 50$ cheaper than the other place which didn't suggest it be luggage and instead told me it could be shipped by them. I went with the smart choice and brought it to Wheels and Sprocket. Once there a different guy was super helpful backed everything down to the quote on price and didn't bat an eye at the shape of the bike. I mean when I saw the bolts myself I decided the restoration went from a weekend job to a week job. I told him when we were leaving next week and that we would have to drive back from Milwaukee to get the bike for the airplane. He talked to his mechanic and he said he could have it back today. When I came back to get it a young woman helped me load it in to my car and was super helpful and made it quick and easy. I mean I just got a bike broken down and boxed but it made the person I love the most literally cry when her dream came true. It's just a bike, it's just a bike shop but goddamn sometimes a bunch of people really go out of there way to help it means something. So telling it here is the best I can do. The service i received by both the general manager and the sales manager was top-tier. Not only did I purchase a bike due to their service, but they helped me through tons of other questions I had, to include insurance, locks, their experiences with stolen bikes (unfortunately was purchasing my second bike after having my first stolen). I will be coming back here for service - I live several hundred miles away but will be bringing my bike to visit family solely so all of my tune-ups and general service can be performed by kind and trustworthy people. My husband and I were both looking for road bikes. Graeme knew what he wanted, a Trek Domane.  When we noticed a sale on it, we went and purchased it. The staff was helpful and friendly when it came to buying it. On the other hand, the Domane just didn't fit comfortably,  so I did multiple rides of different bikes.  Then had to decide if this was something practical for me. Adam is the friendliest store manager I've ever met in a bike shop. 10/10 on the chit-chat :-) Additionally, I only know a little about bikes or bike gear and recently have begun commuting by bicycle. Adam freely and without condescension offered explanations and solutions to various issues I came to him with that might have apparent answers to someone more familiar with biking but were not evident to me initially. Brought both bikes in bc the chains and sprockets had rusted out. They were able to clean the sprockets and replace the chains in no time. They had both bikes done in 30 minutes and were very knowledgeable. We will be taking our bikes back for everything. read more

Took my mountain bike in for service. First time customer. I didn't buy my bike here, but they treated me like I did. I needed my derailleur fixed and my wheel trued after a mishap. They went above and beyond with their service, in many ways, doing extra little things like tightening the linkages and replacing some cable ties that were missing. They didn't charge me for those extras and they got my bike running great for $52. You can't beat that. read more

This was my second time in the shop - the first time was when I was shopping for a gift for a friend. This was my first time in for service. Big fat gold stars for Adam, who fixed my flat tire on the spot. The price was very reasonable, and his knowledge in dealing with my not-so-common bike was reassuring! Visited Wheel & Sprocket in Middleton for the first time last week. I was looking for a bike helmet for my son. The employee (his name began with a D. Wish I could remember the rest of his name) who helped me was professional and knowledgeable, and took the time to answer all of my questions. While the employee was helping my son find a bike helmet he liked, my overtired three year old grabbed a bike bell and rang it repeatedly while running all over the shop. The employee who helped me had a sense of humor about the situation and was kind to my little man. Another employee went above and beyond to not only be kind to my boys but he also played with them. I had a really great experience even though my son was bouncing off the walls annoying. The two employees who helped me that evening, I wish I could remember their names, were lovely and so very kind. And I couldn't be more happy with the bike helmet we found for my son. its a nice bright fluorescent green which makes it much easier to spot him. I highly recommend this shop and will definitely go back in the future. Perhaps, sooner rather than later, to buy an electric bike. read more

First time at this bike shop and they were extremely helpful and friendly. I had a good idea of what I needed (bike for my daughter) but they still gave great advice on sizing, etc. There was a pretty serious cyclist next to me that was making a purchase around $8k and had some REALLY specific and technical questions and he was quite effusive in his appreciation of the help he was getting as well. Was hoping this shop lived up to its reviews but was surprised about the unhelpful and cold counter service. The store says it accepts Wisconsin Bike Federation membership discounts, but I was told that it did not because of the pandemic economy. I could understand that, but other customers told me they did take it from them this month. It appeared the person helping me simply didn't want to do the extra work on my purchase, Cool-- I will shop at other Madison bike shops that are friendly and honest. read more

I lived in Middleton Wisconsin for 16 years from about 2001 to 2015 and I do not recommend bringing your bikes here to be fixed or buying anything here for that matter, the clerks are rude and unhelpful, their products are cheap and unreliable and they won't help you out or give you a replacement even if you bring in the broken item and show your receipt, I went in a while ago I brought in my bike and I asked a woman if she could help me and she responded by saying "Come back on a rainy day!" don't do business with these people at all, they don't care about your bike maintenance issues, very disappointing read more

Visited Wheel & Sprocket for the first time the evening of 7/16/19 to purchase two sets of fenders and two rear racks. Their sales and service staff were incredibly helpful. They helped us pick out the right size fenders for both bikes. When we had some questions and difficulty with the install the service technician took the time to answer our questions and assist. Completely inept staff. Do not go to this bike shop. They don't know what they are doing. charged me $90 to fix my son's bike's front brake lever and "tune up" the bike. This tune up included a $5 charge for a "Frame wipe down". What? The front brake broke a week later because when they repaired it, they didn't replace the part that was actually faulty. When I took it back they originally said the work wasn't done there. This was minutes after printing out the work order and handing it to me. Then, they said I'd have to pay for a new front brake assembly. Again, do not go to this bike shop. So many other established, competent options nearby read more
