Someone in my office made an executive decision that we'd get some ice cream for lunch today. Erikson's is just up the road, so we piled into a couple cars, and headed out. The steamy temperatures outside and the fresh-baked car interiors only heightened the anticipation. Erikson's is a prototypical roadside stand, and if someone told me it was unchanged since 1920, i'd probably believe them. The little house has half a dozen windows for massive throughput (and i suspect it gets pretty crowded during the evenings and on weekends), and shaded porches all around, as well as a massive parking lot. The only thing missing is an idyllic farm setting (which there might have been, a long time ago). The ice cream's pretty good, and cheap, too, considering what i'm used to. the selection's all right, although the flavor i tried wasn't as good as its namesake at other places. not by any means bad, though. a generous amount of sprinkles helps, too. beats the office cafeteria for sure. read more

They team up with honey pot in stow to make some i amazing favors the peach ice cream was to die for and I just tried the apple caramel with it like apple pie so yummy next I am trying pumpkin. Not gonna lie.....this is tasty frozen heaven. That being said I ALWAYS get a bad stomach ache after eating it. Sad to say I had my last ice cream here last summer, I just can't deal with the tummy pain. Don't know why it happens....no I'm NOT lactose intolerant. I can eat ice cream other places and I'm fine. For being a " townie " love this place !, been going since High School & I'm 30! My favorite thing is their originally in flavors , not boring vanilla , chocolate ..stuff like " red velvet cake " & a " chocolate mint "..a big mint lover so I can switch between mints . They even give free frozen yogurt to dogs " doggie ice cream ", so if you have a dog , great dog friendly choice , the staff are also friendly & lines go fast! The seating area is spacious to & good for dogs & wheelchairs . The lot is a good sized as well but could use some bump paving , not sure their budget though just don't want tire damage . Tried to go here with friends last night, arrived at about 8:55, and they had closed 35 mins early. There were at least six or seven other people who arrived after we did as well who were also left without service. When waiting at the counter - it was unclear they had closed - no one spoke to us or tried to explain the situation, but just turned off the porch lights and waited for us to return to our cars. It was so disrespectful and rude, just the way they handled the early closing. read more

This is our 3rd or 4th visit here since moving to Maynard. We've been to Kimball's, Hayward (in Oscar's Burritos in Boxboro), and Hudson Creamery. At the level of ice cream, service, and experience, this place ranks at the top. Hudson was icy and low quality. Hayward is good, but limited. Kimball's...everyone loves it, but I don't see it as worth a 45 minute line. Both times our orders at Kimball's were screwed up. For soft ice cream and hard ice cream and wait for service, Erickson's wins. The soft serve is good. He pumpkin flavor tasted like pumpkin and was not too sweet. It was somewhat zesty. The chocolate was dark and somewhat spicy. The peanut butter Oreo was a subtle peanut butter with what seemed like real Oreos. Of the places we visited, Erickson's is really good. More places to sit and more shade would make it great. read more

It's hard to believe anyone could knock Erikson's. The drive-in location and the homemade ice cream are the area's treasure. It is a very sad day when it closes for the year (around mid-September), but a very happy one when they reopen around April 10! Perhaps I am just obsessed with a few flavors, but to me, there is no other ice cream (except for gelato). Instead of mint chocolate chip, they have wintergreen chip...and it really tastes like wintergreen! Their Graham Central Station explodes in your mouth--a caramel based ice cream with chocolate covered honey comb and graham cracker bits. The Black and Tan (they are currently out, unfortunately, and won't be making more until the end of the summer) is some crazy concoction of said caramel ice cream base mixed with ice cream sandwich crumbs and something else. Their Purple Cow tastes of pure blackberry. Furthermore, you can get two flavors in a generous kiddie cup for a little over $2. How many places do that? To justify the calories, I can even ride my bike there. read more

If the squawling of children, the blaring of car horns, and the risk of diabetes is your cup of tea, then run, don't walk to Erikson's. Overly sugared and loaded full of ice chunks, the ice cream is only half the problem. The day of my visit, the backyard picnic tables were infested with hundreds of hoppy, screechy brats gone mad on a sugar high. Out front in the parking lot, a chorus of car horns blared as pork-bellied adults squeezed past their steering wheels after dispatching a gallon of rum raisin. The only good thing about Erikson's is the prices: a kid's cone goes for the astounding pre-inflation price of $1.85. Which is probably why it's so busy. Don't be fooled. Go to Kimball's. Or better yet, Rancatore's. Now THAT'S ice cream. read more

Ordered my rum buttered pecan on this 75 degree day and made it a small. Didn't need some ass yelling out "look at the size of the fat bastard's cone!" Into the truck I go, and realize this dripping creation of rum and butter is going to be too much for Jack the Golden Retriever. He's on the console of the truck with his front legs securely planted and hind legs just as secure on the rear seat. As he tempts me to look away by pointing out the pretty girl in the convertible next to me, the bastard takes a lick of my cone. This is done with such force that said scoop of rum buttered pecan drops to the leather passenger seat and Jack the sob jumps with the blinding speed of only a super hero. Gone! Like that. Ever see a dog get a freeze? "Ha you bastard" I yell, but not in the most discreet way and pretty girl in the convertible looks at me like I'm just a little weird. I get out of the truck to explain (but why) to the young lady that Jack ate my cone. Jack is now on the floor of the truck in an excruciating dog brain freeze. She can't see him and sort of nods me off. I wonder if it would be correct for me to order another? But not wanting to be called a "fat bastard" I climb back into the big Ford truck and drive down 117 waiting for Jack to show himself. The three licks of Erickson's rum buttered pecan were crazy good. Go there and also think about my all time favorite Toasted Walnut Fudge. I live close to Erickson's. Place has gone downhill. My husband got wintergreen mint. Too minty and tasted funny. I got black rasberry, and it didnt taste like it use too. I don't find their ice creams are packed with lots of flavor. Got a small one and a kiddie cone. $7.00 bucks is a rip off. Avoid this place, and drive to Kimballs. You get tasty ice cream, and larger portions. read more

I just love it. Here's why: Yummy home-made ice cream with a good selection of flavors! The wintergreen chip is my favorite and I have never seen it on a menu anywhere else. Free ice cream for the dog. Old town feel with half of the town in the parking lot. Unbeatable prices! Under $3.oo for a kiddie size, which is definitely the size of a small at most other places. Tonight I had possibly THE worst customer service experience that I can remember. Tonight is a Friday, one week prior to Labor Day. We arrived at 9:11 pm, along with several other cars. There was a few customers being handed their ice cream and then the windows closed. There were about 10 or more employees inside who went about their business, completely ignoring the crowd of people waiting to order who was trying to figure out what was going on. The website says that they are open till 9:30. My husband finally went to the side (which was open)window to flag someone down. They continued to ignore him even though he was speaking directly to them. Then one employee finally said they closed at 9. When we said that the website states that it is open to 9:30, one gentleman rudely said "well it was on FB!" Seriously? This is how you do business? They refused to serve anyone. Who closes at 9 pm on a Friday night in the summer? What was most bothersome was how they were all purposely ignoring the customers outside, probably 8-10 people. All they had to do was open the window, acknowledge their customers and say, "I'm sorry folks, we are closed for the night. We apologize for any inconvenience." They were astronomically rude! We left their and drove to Hudson to go to New City Microcreamery as well as a few other customers who were behind us. We were warmly welcomed there, had great customer service and fabulous ice cream. Erickson's, we will NOT ever be going back and will tell anyone who will listen just how awful your customer service is! read more

Unbeatable homemade ice cream that will make you fully understand the term "summer". My norm is the Purple Cow (black raspberry ice cream with milk AND white chocolate chips) but I recently tried the Tiramisu.. SO GOOD. My only disappointment is the hard dip they put on soft serve, something I normally crave in the summer time. For some reason, I can never get one that is the right consistency as they're always too thin or way too waxy.. At least I have my purple cow! read more

We went here on a whim with our cousins after much deliberation. We tried a few flavors before deciding on the ones that we wanted. I got the kiddie scoop of the mint chip (after trying the chocolate mint). I was surprised at the size of the scoops and we also ended up being surprised by the pink color of the ice cream (very unnatural)! My husband got a peach sundae. My brother and one of our cousins got the salted caramel chocolate pretzel on a cone and in a cup, respectively. Our other cousins got the raspberry sorbet and the green monsta (mint with Oreo cookies). Our total came out to $28.15 for all of our ice creams. We sat in the shade and there were quite a few benches available. I wasn't too thrilled with the flavors of my mint chip ice cream and the pink color (though the creativity is appreciated) was a bit off putting. I did try the green monsta which I thought was much better than the mint chip. My husband wasn't a fan of his peach sundae. The salted caramel chocolate pretzel ice cream was average with pieces of the pretzels. Our cousin who had the sorbet thought that it was a bit on the sour side, which for him didn't hit the spot. I would say overall this is a pretty average place and can do the job if you need ice cream but I would venture elsewhere next time! Try for yourself if you would like :) read more

This is my third time coming here. We go for the almond joy ice cream, which is excellent! Unfortunately they were all out of it today so we tried the grape-nut ice cream which I thought was also really good. The ice cream is great and the prices are quite resonable. The kiddie cup was a good size even for an adult! The reason I"m giving this review 3 stars instead of 5 is the environment in which you have to eat your ice cream. There are tables in back, but there is a lot of trash all over the ground right even in the woods next to the seating area and it looked like it's has been there quite a while. Also I noticed the back of the building was really fillthy and looked like ice cream had been smeared on the walls. The Whole property is just a big parking lot, all paving, no landscaping. It could be quite nice if they cleaned it up, but next time I'll probably make the drive out to Kimball's in Westford or Carlise. read more
