I wanted a ring with character and that was made with love by a skilled artist, and not mass produced with "blood diamonds" or via a website simulation. Second, buying antiques or vintage items tends to raise a lot of issues. Namely, resizing and proper care. Jared was fantastic about having the ring resized for us (it took 3 days right before Thanksgiving). I also went back to him recently to get the ring cleaned and the prongs tightened. The resizing, cleaning, and care were all free. He also told me how best to clean my ring in case I didn't want to make the trip back to him. Third, his website is well maintained, beautiful, and a veritable vortex of shiny things that keeps you clicking page after page. He is fantastic with email communication and customer service. That said, there are places where you should manage your expectations. Since every item is unique, once an item sells, you're out of luck. DF had bid originally on one item but it turned out to have sold a few days before. Jared is a buyer/seller - he doesn't do the resizing or fixes himself. He has the work done off site, which means the turnaround is going to be longer than a Zales or Tiffany's who may have those services on site. His space in the Diamond District is also hard to find, amid a warren of other jewelers and stalls that can be very overwhelming. read more

Have you ever been to a jewelry store where the employees didn't seem interested in selling the jewelry? Welcome to Erstwhile. The service is polite but standoffish (not laid back or hands-off but standoffish). Their hours are M-F 10am - 5pm, so if you need to work to pay for that engagement ring, good luck finding a time to come or expecting the staff to even attempt to work around your schedule. I visited Erstwhile with my fiancee to pick out my engagement ring. I was one of those lucky girls who gets to select the exact ring she wants. Erstwhile was on the top of my list, but that first visit left a bad taste in my mouth. And the second visit too. On my first visit, I was presented with multiple boxes of rings in no logical order, ran out of time to try on the rings, and got rushed out, so the employee assisting us could make her next appointment. In the last 30 seconds before we were asked to leave, we hurriedly took photos of the rings that I wanted to consider (no, we didn't have time to take all the photos we needed, and logically the photos came out blurry since we were in such a hurry). It was too bad because I found "the ring" that spoke to me just as we were getting rushed out. When I finally found the time to make a second visit, the employee couldn't share much information on this specific ring style when I asked. Weird. I got a follow-up email days later alerting me that the ring had sold and wishing me luck finding a ring elsewhere. Weirder. I would've totally been open to paying Erstwhile to replicate the ring (which typically costs a couple grand more than the ring that already sold), and we had even discussed that option during my second visit. It ultimately wasn't offered to me...nor did she offer to let me know if new rings came in that matched my style. Oh, well. The rings were pretty, but I certainly won't be making another visit to buy my engagement ring or our wedding bands there. read more

I purchased an engagement ring at Erstwhile. After eyeing a few rings on their website -- which is very well laid-out -- I made an appointment with Nikki to check it out in person at their NYC show room. The show room is a small office where you're able to check out as many rings as you'd like ... Nikki was helpful with answering questions and making it feel like an easy process. She was transparent about the company's pricing and how the purchase process would work if I were to buy the ring. After checking out the rings, I honed in on two that I really liked. Over the course of several visits, I decided on the ring I wanted to purchase about two weeks after my first contact with the company. Throughout those two weeks, I visited the Erstwhile showroom four times -- one time was literally just to sit in a chair and think. Nikki and Jared are helpful about answering questions when you need them to, but they're also happy to sit and do emails or other work while you just stare at jewelry for as long as you need to. This was comforting as I felt worried about making a large purchase on a ring that I had only eyeballed for a few minutes. Finally, I chose to make the purchase online and pick it up at their showroom. The process was smooth and I emailed Nikki again to set up a time to pick up the ring. Over the two weeks I exchanged about two dozen emails with Nikki, and she was always quick to respond and provide guidance when needed. I happily got the ring appraised for the amount I paid and my girlfriend said yes when I proposed with it a couple months later. She loves it. Overall, the process of buying an engagement ring is really weird. Living in NYC, the Diamond District has tons of in-person stores that you can walk into to take a look at rings, but a lot of them are very pushy and it's extremely difficult to tell when you're being ripped off. On the other hand, shopping for a ring online is easy and efficient, and pretty transparent all things considered, but it's an odd thing to spend a ton of money on something you've never even seen in real life. Erstwhile is the perfect in-between. If you're lucky enough to live close enough to their showroom, you have the advantage of browsing a very well-done website that is full of all the information and professional photos you need, plus the advantage of seeing it in person and dealing with patient, non-pushy employees to boot. My fiance and I were recently engaged, and he gave me a ring from their By Erstwhile collection. From the very beginning we've had an absolutely wonderful experience with Erstwhile and Nikki! My now-fiance and I visited the showroom together a few months ago, where I tried on several estate pieces as well as rings from the By Erstwhile collection. We knew that we wanted a vintage stone, and when we found out that the By Erstwhile collection is made in New York with reclaimed platinum and gold, we knew this would be a great option for us. We appreciated how Nikki wasn't pushy at all, yet she was happy to engage us in conversation and give us information about everything I tried on, from vintage Tiffany rings to the By Erstwhile design that I now wear every day. From my initial browsing of the extensive, informative website, to my first call with Jared, to my 2 separate visits to their gem of an office, I always felt I was in the right place. I was really put off by some of my earlier experiences with jewelry stores, where everyone seemed intent on "making a sale", and I felt completely out of my depth. wow. not for me. beauuuutiful vintage rings. this place is in a hard to find office building, by appointment only. one would expect some pretty awesome one-on-one service, but Jared kind of just sat there on his laptop and answering phone calls. it was awkward. I think we just didn't click. a few examples: "what size did you say you were? 4.5? are you sure? i think you're more of a 5." um, don't ever tell a girl she's a larger size than she thinks, even if she is. and he checked. i am a 4.5. "where else have you guys looked? oh that place. isn't it a big chain store?" no. it's not. it was a small antique store in seattle, one of kind, with much nicer people working there. and when we asked the price of one of the pieces, and my boyfriend nodded in approval, Jared responded with "oh... is that still in your price range?..." yikes. I'm gonna chalk it up to one big misunderstanding. i don't know why getting along with the jeweler makes any difference in picking a ring, but it does. i just don't feel comfortable buying from here. read more

My boyfriend and I were left to navigate the entire selection on our own, and only received feedback from the staff member when we asked. Otherwise he was talking on the phone or catching up with emails on his computer instead of helping us along. Perhaps some customers prefer that, but I would've been more inclined to purchase from here had more attention been to us while at the shop. Buying an expensive piece of jewelry is a HUGE purchase and a big deal! Can't say I was comfortable here to make the big leap. i absolutely love my engagement ring! there couldn't be a more perfect ring out there for me - and i'm so glad my fiance found it from jared at erstwhile jewelry. when i first saw the ring on their website, i was attracted to the lovely pictures....and it's definitely even more beautiful in person. the selection of engagement rings (and jewelry in general) is perfectly curated and every piece is unique. even though all the rings are truly antiques - the quality and condition of the rings are flawless. my ring needed to be resized (at no charge) and the jeweler that Jared sent me to had it done by the end of the day! i also needed to have the diamond reset so jared sent me back to the same jeweler (at no charge), but when I wasn't completely happy with the outcome, jared was super helpful and understanding and made sure that it was reset once again perfectly. excellent customer service and attention to detail. i will forever recommend erstwhile as the place to go for antique jewelry! read more

I spoke to Jared on a Monday morning and had a perfectly sized ring delivered to my door in Las Vegas Thursday morning before 9:00am. The pictures online were a huge help in deciding but really don't do it justice! The ring came packaged carefully and looks amazing; it's obvious everyone at Erstwhile has great pride in every piece they send out. The ring came with an EGL certificate as well as an appraisal so getting it added to my home owners policy was that much easier. The only problem I encountered was that after about 3 days of wearing it my fiancé discovered that the center diamond was noticeably loose. I could have sent the ring back but I didn't want her to be without it for a week just to have the prongs tightened. I took it to a local jeweler and they ended up having to re-tip the mounting prongs because they weren't quite long enough to bend and secure the diamond.
