This was a very cool drive. We traveled from our hotel in Loa, Utah and drove the the visitor center. The views from the road were beautiful. In one point the road is very high up with shear cliffs overlooking the vast Grand Staircase area. Getting there the road goes through a wooded area where you go up and up. I think the temperture went down 20 degrees at the top, It was a cool windy road. Also when they say there are free range cows, there are free range cows. We came around a windy bend and there stood a cow. The visitor center for the Staircase isnt very large but we could get our national monument stamp and look at a few of the displays. There isnt anywhere to stop along this road if you need to use a rest room. So plan ahead. There are plenty of places to stop for pictures. read more

The rooms are decently managed and okay if you don't get in the way of inn keeper. He is impatient, ill tempered and hates being disturbed. He is not a people's person and he doesn't have business sense, which confuses me why he is doing this. Unfortunately this is a small town, with limited options. read more

We stayed here for 2 nights in the middle of an epic trip. It was perfectly comfortable and fine. There were some surprises (like, no coolers allowed in the room, and there aren't fridges IN the room, but there is one shared fridge outside that everyone has access to) but nothing that we couldn't roll with. The room was clean, the shower good, and it was downright charming to sit on the little side patio to our room, drink a beer, and watch the horses next door graze on their dinner. Escalante is a small town, but it has pretty much everything you could need (including surprisingly great pizza at Escalante Outfitters). Tom was super nice and had great recommendations, too! It's clear he loves the area and is excited about sharing it with folks coming through. read more

Now named the Inn at Escalante. Unpretentious place just off the main drag. Due to the pandemic, I suppose, we were the only guests in residence. Tom, the proprietor greeted us warmly when we arrived, showed us how the satellite TV service worked, and recommended local restaurants. (Alas, most everything in town is closed Sundays and Mondays - at least during pandemic season.) Room was clean. Everything worked. Quiet. Windows that open - allowing the evening breezes in. Decor nice: crown moulding, faux wood flooring, mixture of Native American and African. (At least I think that the huge drums doubling as bedside tables are African. But what do I know: I've never been to Africa.) No children. No pets. (But 5 cats in residence outside to terrorize the local rodents.) read more

Be warned, he will not honor the 26% off coupon on yelp when you check in, which was one of the reasons we decided to stay there. Absolutely terrible experience. I could kick myself for not scouting out a better place to stay. First the guys quotes us a price, then when we get there, its a higher price, then tells us he will give us a break if we pay in cash but will not honor the coupon. Shady. I'll admit the place was clean, but there are all kinds of weird rules the guy has in place. We had backpacked out of a canyon the day we checked in and were hoping to be able to sleep in and catch some sleep, but had to wake up pretty early as the latest breakfast was served was 8:15am, which I think is a bit early. The breakfast was so awful the first day we skipped the second day and went next door for something, which was great. The coffee he served was pretty good. Also, this place clearly is not a BNB. Its some weird motel where the guy serves breakfast in his house. There are a few other things that didn't seem quite right. After we checked in, we went to grab dinner and left the a/c on in our room. When we returned, the a/c had mysteriously turned off, and it hadn't reached the optimum temp as we had to switch the thing back on. Somewhat odd considering this was our first day and there was no service needed to freshen the room or linens so I really don't appreciate someone in our room after we had checked in. Additionally, my husband is allergic to melon, something that happened to be served with the mediocre breakfast we had the first day. People that run a BNB should ask if someone has allergies if they are serving a set course. We had inquired the day before what was for breakfast the next day and got the reply, " I don't know, I haven't made it yet." Classy. The final thing, there was a scheduled power outage the night we checked in. We saw a note on Tom's counter when we checked, but didn't realize it was for that night and Tom didn't seem to think that was important to mention it to us. Glad we didn't rely on the room clock to wake us up. I guess Tom's been doing this for a while, but really it was a mediocre experience all around and I will take my time to look elsewhere for lodging, even it its the campground down the street with the RV's. At least in a tent I won't feel like I'm getting ripped off or taken advantage of. read more

I will tell you what I wish I had know before I made our reservation. Your 50% deposit in NON refundable. There it is, right in the fine print. I missed it, my bad. Every lodging in the area has a cancellation policy and I respect that but a 50% NON refundable deposit - this is a one and only. Most are $25 to 30 and vary from 30 days out to 3 days out. In our case it would have amounted to about $250. Every businessperson should be able to run their business according to their needs and as they see fit. But this unusual policy (objectively unusual) should be highlighted. You can now make your informed decision if this policy fits with YOUR need. To put this in perspective, every interaction I had with Tom, the owner, was courteous, timely and rational and I have no other complaints. read more

Tom and his wife were great, rooms were large, nice and very clean. Breakfast and coffee was also good. The rooms are in separate buildings next to the main house, where you check in and breakfast is served avery morning. For me this was a pleasant surprise, since it is much more private. Came up from Bryce area taking Scenic Byway 12 all the way up to the 24. Tom said "You came from the Bryce direction? You ain't seen nothing yet." and boy was he right - the scenery was SPECTACULAR going NE out of Escalante. Tom also suggested a small side road to check out on the way, which ended up being the highlight of the entire trip. I won't mention it here - you can ask him if you go there. :-) read more

In looking at the reviews on Yelp, it seems it has been a while since anyone bothered to review the Inn at Escalante, which it is now called. I booked through Expedia, I so accidently entered the wrong date by a week. My fault. However, when we arrived, and there was no room available, Tom, the owner stated if he rerented the room by the following Friday, he would be fine with returning our full payment. Suggestin there was a "flea bag" motel down the road or the hotel that is similar to a Motel 6. This property was nothing to shout out about! In checking all the places you can book, including the "Inns" own site, stated " no availiblity" fully booked. When I sent an email to Tom, he offered a 1 year non transferable credit... which will do me no good. We will not be back in the area next year. My husband is a double amputee, with surgeries scheduled, that will prevent any travel for at least a year. When I mentioned that in the email, he responded " I didn't notice any amputee" HOW do you not notice titanium legs!!! He refused to refund, was rude and I highly recommend take a one minute drive down the road to the Entrada at Escalante. They are friendly, professional, helpful and was a delightful place with clean, comfortable, well appointed decor and again, friendly. Tom, the owner of the Inn of Escalante... is not. Read the reviews, he has some good ones, but there are also many that reflect his rude mannerisms. And you better not have any kids or smoke anything! read more

The owner Tom would not honor the 26% check in discount on yelp. He also quoted us at 135 a night over the phone the quoted us 150 for a night once we got there. Then stated that he would give us a discount of 135 a night if we paid cash. Even though the owner was clearly a flake we decided to stay there because it was in town and it had decent reviews. Then came the breakfast. We asked what he was making the day before and he said he didn't know because he hasn't made it yet. Unfortunately for me his breakfast had a giant piece of melon on it and I am incredibly allergic to melons. I have stayed at b&b's quite a bit and am always asked about allergies. The rooms are not part of the actual house and are more of a motel than a b&b. The rooms are clean but a bit run down. Also I wrote this review on day one with two stars but by the end of day two it went down to one star. read more

We got the info from a Fodors book. Good book by the way. We are still talking about how nice Escalante and this place was. This included a trip from Zion to Moab so it is a highlight of a great trip. The place is in a nice neighborhood. If you take a walk around you will be pleasantly surprised by horses and other Escalante flavors. This by no means is just another Motel on a highway. The rooms are like a Hotel room with the flavor of a B&B. I hate B&B's, I like my privacy. This place is private, well laid out and well maintained. Read that as Clean and convenient. Room decorated on an original style, table to use for planning or eating, chairs to sit and actually talk, good bathroom with soft towels and did I say Clean. Breakfast was good and interesting, not bland or over the top. Not much more could be asked for. Oh yeah really good bed. read more

Do you dislike cat urine smell while eating? Then you will want to skip the Breakfast at this B&B. The reception, kitchen and eating areas are infused with that sickly sour cat smell. Also, unless you like an extra-firm, hard Bed, you will want to skip the sleeping part also. There were a number of other turn-offs at this awful place but I think the Bed and Breakfast parts were the worst. read more

This business is unprofessional and rude. We tried to cancel a booking over 5 months in advance. The manager, Tom, reduced the cancellation fee, which we appreciated. But he would not return our phone calls, his emails were rude, stating, "there is nothing to discuss." We ended up paying over $160 to NOT stay at his establishment. The worst customer service I've experienced in a long time (and I've travelled a lot). Whatever you do, DO NOT book here. read more

The owner Tom was horribly rude to both me and my father, and I still cringe thinking about it. Somehow there was a mix up when my father booked the room and instead of 2 nights we were only booked for 1 night. We discovered this when we returned from a day of hiking to find all of our things in boxes and a $70 charge for a late check out and to change the locks (yes he thought that was necessary). He never once verified our booking information when we checked in or at breakfast the next morning. Not only did he treat my father (who was horribly embarrassed) like dirt, he also told us we wouldn't be able to get a room anywhere else but he had another room we could stay in. We then proceeded to leave and find lodging just down the street. Also don't bother asking for seconds at breakfast. read more

We loved Tom's B&B, and we loved Tom. The rooms are lovely - large and clean; very nicely decorated; great beds; really nice bathrooms, terrific tub/shower. Perfect view across Tom's zeriscape flower gardens to the cliffs in the distance from the chairs on the covered porch. We had planned a couple days of hiking in the canyons, but plans changed when my son got really sick and ended up spending all of his time in B (and not eating Tom's delicious B.) Tom was so sweet - when the only soup to be found in town was in a can from the convenience store, Tom took care of preparing it and delivering it to my son in his room, presented formally on a tray with a covered bowl. This is a small business owner who has truly figured out how to make his business work - for his guests, and for him. Tom obviously respects the unique and precious Escalante environment, and loves the sanctuary he has created for visitors. He expects his guests to respect the place that he built from scratch - and love - and the rules he's established for its use. I really respect him for that. read more

Tom is probably a good host unless you misunderstand any of his long list of rules. We had a terrible experience with Tom, the owner/innkeeper. A friend had stayed at the Inn a year earlier and invites our family to go down with his this year. They booked their stay and since we were following their lead I had my wife book ours. The day of our stay our friends had arrived earlier than us and called us saying there was an issue with the owner but due to cell phone reception we weren't able to get all the details but it was about how many can stay an ages. Turns out Tom (the owner) had changed his policy since my friend's prior stay and Tom no longer allows kids under 16. My wife had seen the policy when she booked the room but thought since our friends had already booked and have three kids the same age as our three they must know something we don't and it would be all right. Please read the print too because it said there is an extra $20 fee for additional people so we planned to pay $20 for our 5 guest but it is actually $20 for more than 2 which I will get to in a minute. So we arrived about 9:00pm on a Wednesday night. Tom new we had kids and more than 4 guests since our friend had informed him that we were in the same predicament he was but I thought I would go talk to Tom and see what we could work out. I went into his place, cats were everywhere by the way, walking all over the tables and chairs in the dining and kitchen area but I explained to Tom how we booked after our friends booked and to his credit it did state no one under 16 allowed but my wife thought if our friends were good so were we. I apologized for it then to my surprised he went off on how no one reads the fine print where it clearly states his policies. Then he had the said he could kick us all out of here and charge us $200 a night (3 nights) which I thought was odd since he had just told me his policy only allows up to 4 people but he would charge me for more. I again apologized and asked if that is what he wants to do he then said he didn't want to ruin our vacation so he will allow 4 of us to stay but someone has to stay elsewhere. I told him one of us could sleep in the car. He told me he nice he will be only to charge $160 a night and when I asked why $160 if we only have 4 people he went off again saying here is the contract you want me to read it to you, it is $140 for 2 guest each additional is $20. I said that is fine I appreciate you allowing us to stay then asked when we could have breakfast. Tom said breakfast would not be included and if we has any complaints about our kids he will kick us out. I said we are paying for $140 plus an extra $20 and there are 3 of us over 16 so don't we get the breakfast you said we would get? Tom went off again how he could kick me out right now and charge us $600 plus tax and I ought to take his very kind offer. Honestly I was okay not eating there after seeing the cats everywhere and not wanting to see Tom again. So we stayed and made sure we were gone from sun up to sun down so no one saw or heard our kids. Again I realize there were mistakes on our part. My wife should have asked me about the kid policy but what I didn't like was he unwillingness to work with us and his constant threat to kick us our and charge us anyway even as I was just trying to figure out what was going on and how his pricing worked. I never once raised my voice, I was constantly apologizing, I admitted it was our mistake but he was so over the top harsh. I thought we must have caught him on a bad night until I saw another review of a guest Tom jumped on for checking out 1 minute late but his comments sounded like Tom perfectly. read more
