Our experience was fun but because of our large group. I've been to one other escape the room in the past and this experience was far less fun comparatively. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the escape rooms here are office rooms that have posters stuck on the walls. If this location put more effort into the escape the room transformation I think there would be more of an appeal. Once we were in the room, my reaction was similar to most reviews here - there were mostly locks to find clues to unlock and retrieve more clues to unlock more locks, rinse repeat. I kept looking for books or other non-locked items to pay through for clues, but I felt that was limited. We left the room with 23 minutes to spare and did need help with getting one clue to progress through the escaping process. Would I come here again and pay $20. No. But, it was fun regardless for a first and last time sort of experience. read more

Took our grandchildren there today. None of us have ever done this before so we didn't know what to expect. We did the Sherlock Holmes Room and ran out of time at the last clue. We all enjoyed it very much. It was fun seeing the kiddos working together trying to get us out. Ben and Jenna were amazing from the time we entered the establishment to the time we left. Like the other reviews said, a very cheap setup ("escape cubicle" would be more accurate) whose only saving grace is a cheaper price. However the price still isn't cheap enough to justify bothering with. It's now $26/person, while other quality escape rooms are $30-32. Just pay the extra $6 and go to a real room. Cheap cubicles where you can hear all the other groups. Rooms are just cheap laminated sheets with some posters and one small prop or two with zero effort given to any theme or decoration. All the clues are on the posters and sheets. The entire "game" could fit into an envelope and be played anywhere. Hint system is the worst I've ever seen. Every room has a camera or radio you can immediately ask for help with. Here, you have to hit a buzzer, wait for an attendant to walk down to your room, waste time explaining where you are, and then get the hint. Often the attendant will be busy with another customer out front and won't come for over 5 minutes. You will not get any wasted time refunded. In order to be worth it, this place would have to cost $10-15. It's THAT cheap. At $26 it's ridiculous. read more

Pros: -Cheaper than other escape rooms at $20/person -2 hints -Lots of parking at the mall Cons: -Slightly hard to find in the mall--it's near Victoria's Secret -Only 50 minutes to complete (instead of the usual 60) -Rooms are not as elaborately decorated as other companies -Walls in the rooms don't go up to the ceilings, so you can hear people in the other rooms -No one actually watches you as you play, so it can take some time for someone to come if you request a clue (using a button on the door), and then you need to spend time explaining where you are in the game so they can figure out how to help. I think they have limited staff and this is not possible as one person always needs to be staffing the front desk. -Our room had a second door that was not part of the game, but this wasn't told to us, so we spent extra time trying to escape using that door which was actually irrelevant. General note: -Most of the rooms have 2 levels within the room. It's not a choice of whether you want to do Level 1 or Level 3 (for example)--what it means is that there are two parts the room and if you finish the first part, you've "passed" Level 1 and if you pass the second part you also "pass" Level 3. We succeeded Levels 1 and 3 of Alcatraz and found it to be easier than other escape games we've done (at Breakout Boston, Escape Games Worcester, etc.) It was fun, but not the best escape game experience to be had. read more

Extremely over priced for what they offer. Single tiny room, walls don't even reach the ceiling, so you hear the other groups in other rooms around you. Minimal decoration, the back stories / puzzles (if any) will have nothing to do with the room theme - the Super Heros room, for example, as a few images of a few heros taped to the wall among the totally unrelated and random "clues". These "clues" are just a few old music posters to try to guess random data from to unlock numerous combination locks, of which there are far too many for the very limited amount of time they give you.. just 50 minutes! There is almost no actual decoration, no immersion at all, rooms feel empty and crappy from the first minute on. It's mostly an exercise in random guessing, with nothing to connect the "clues" to any locks, no actual puzzles to solve, and no staff help at all. If they were charging $10 a person, it might be worth it to pass a boring rainy afternoon, but when you pay $26 a person, even for kids, you expect a hell of a lot more. Don't waste your money here! Very much a "fast casual" option of the escape room multiverse - cheap(er), not entirely inedible and accessible. Just don't walk away thinking you'll be fulfilled. A dozen or so themed rooms end up being cubicles with shared airspace. We were one of two groups in the entire place on a quiet Tuesday night, and we heard every snap, clasp and high five from a gaggle of teenagers a few rooms down. Prepare for spoilers if you're next to a louder-than-a-church mouse party. Went all Sherlock and found it to be fairly formulaic - willing to bet each of these puzzles is the same archetype wrapped in varying skins. Not that the escape room concept itself is entirely original from space to space, but tell me if this was your room here: 92% locks, a heavy hand of red herring clues, minimal difficulty (despite the two tiering system - more on that in a mo), laminated clue sheets that are blatant in their intent, and useless decor. This said, it was challenging enough that we finished our room with 8 minutes left, and opted to go next level (optional if you have time remaining), which only took us an additional 6 mins. Our guide checked in on us twice, as we weren't asking our allotted two clues (ballers!), and at $20pp, it's definitely less than most other rooms - so consider it an intro course if you're new to the concept. In all honesty, it's probably ideal for a tipsy group of six before hitting them Kingston clurbs (ie Pinz next door). I bet it's on Groupon!* *It is! read more

I don't often write reviews and they are almost always complimentary. That said, our experience at Escape the Mystery Room was almost uniformly awful. This was a MALL escape room and it fulfilled the worst stereotypes about mall-versions of things. What was wrong? Poorly designed puzzles (really confusing and hard for the sake of being hard, rather than challenging and fun), a broken lock ten minutes into the puzzle that stopped us cold for twenty minutes, poor customer service in regard to the issues and just generally lackluster attentiveness to theme, detail and general complacency. And finally, incredibly rude service from one particular individual. Read on for details if you want them. We bought the escape room as a Christmas gift for our 13 year old niece while we were in town for the holiday. We brought along a few family members who had never been to one. Bought the room for eight. We only showed up with 6 people. The family was a little skeptical about it honestly as was I because of some of the terrible Yelp reviews. My wife and I had done one in NYC and had a phenomenal time. We finished that one with three total hints on probably 25+ puzzles in that whole room. As for Mystery Room, we'd read a few bad reviews on several sites but decided to go ahead anyway because there was a playspace down the hall for our younger kids. We rolled the dice. And lost. We got there and the manager, Anthony, met us and seemed very nice. He indicated that he had set up the room ("Treasure Island") for a lower level than we were booked for so took a few minutes to sort it out. We ended up starting pretty close to on time. He then led us down the almost featureless hallway past 5-6 identical doors but for a simple, laminated, printed sign on the doors naming the game they were hosting. Pretty chincy if they couldn't even spring for a decent sign. And the rooms had basically just been erected with the most basic walls, unfinished doors and wood and sheet rock and monotone paint job. Upon entering the room itself, I deflated a little when I saw it was a brightly lit, boring room with a bunch of big posters glued to the wall and minor bits of bricabrac laying around and some locked chests and a barrel. A really plain room with really hastily designed and glued on "theme". Every "clue" was basically a laminated card with a printout with a little text on it. We got a few final instructions and pushed into the puzzles. We gathered a lot of stuff pretty quickly and opened a few locks. The initial challenges we light and plain but that was fine. We wanted the newer folks to get a feel for it. About 10-15 minutes in the customer Rep had come in once and offered to help with a puzzle we were stuck on and all but gave us the answer to a lock. Fine. No biggy. Shortly after that we got stuck for twenty minutes. Cold. After 5 minutes stuck, he had come in and we told him the answer for a lock and he told us we were right and left before we opened the lock. It didn't open even though we confirmed the answer. We suspected a lock was broken and called for help. After fifteen minutes of calling for assistance, still no help, and after twenty minutes we were pretty much standing there waiting. We had a pretty much given up. We were bored and annoyed. Manager (Anthony) FINALLY came in and acknowledged the lock was broken it and then proceeded to open it, pull out the clue and read the thing off and answer the clue inside the chest. Before we even asked. He gave us more time but we were all just sort of done. My wife and I were disappointed. Everyone was frustrated and rolling their eyes that they had wasted so much time with it. We'd gotten this as a gift for her niece and it was expensive. Her family was unimpressed and we were embarrassed after talking about how cool Escape rooms were. As we were about to finish, I mentioned to a new employee that came in that we'd like at least a partial refund because of the broken lock and all the time we had spent sitting around waiting for someone to respond. He was very nice and left and we finished things. As we were walking out, I hung back with Anthony, the manager, and said, very nicely, "Can we get a refund? That broken lock and the puzzles...this was a really disappointing game. It all ended up being a sort of shitty experience" Then this grown man, Anthony, the "manager" looked at me and said "You just cursed. You can leave. I am done talking to you any more." I was dumbfounded. I didn't curse at him or call him anything. This was two adults talking privately and in a very easy way. I wasn't hostile and I made the request and didn't expect a refund but wanted to offer him a chance before I wrote a review. And I said the word "shitty". And he just shut everything down. He later told me he was 27 years old. I was a little hot after that and spoke to him at the desk about customer service and what that means and how to respond to someone making a request for read more

Pros: Lots of parking, easy to get to, other entertainment options in the mall, friendly staff, Groupons available for a discount. Cons: For the room we did, it was the same kind of clue every time. Find a clue to unlock a box. Inside that box is another clue to help you get the code to unlock the next box. The locks themselves added some difficulty in that they each had a trick to opening them, e.g. push up, then pull down or squeeze the sides and pull down. There's an instruction sheet for the locks in the room, but the more instructions you need to provide someone the worse the customer experience is going to be. You can't teach away bad design. Some of the combination locks were difficult to turn. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the buzzer system to request a clue isn't as efficient as other escape rooms. I've always been given a walkie talkie and received an immediate response. The walls of each room don't go to the ceiling so you can hear the teams in other rooms. Lastly, you only get 50 minutes and two clues versus 60 minutes and 3 clues that I've had at every other escape room. Overall, maybe worth it if you have a good discount and live in the area. But there are probably better ways to spend an hour. read more

A group of friends and I really enjoyed some low-key fun in Sherlock's Library on a gray, cold Sunday this winter. We were all first-timers and asked the front-desk staff to pick a room that would be appropriate for us (Staff were great - very friendly, welcoming and helpful) - We solved the series of puzzles that we were given with just about 30 seconds left on the clock! All of my friends agreed that they'd go back. The concept is great - any puzzle lover / problem solver would be intrigued to solve the presented mystery. We didn't really know what to expect and so completely overlooked the first clue which (looking back) was the simplest of all - Luckily, the staff checks in on you periodically and helps you along if you get stuck. I would say that it helps to have a certain degree of imagination to have a stellar time here - the Sherlock room did not have any modernized elements to interact with , mostly just clues on papers - It could be better if there was any element of movement in the room to add interest , an interactive video or if clues were delivered by a live person, maybe in the form of a staged "phone call" or a message on an answering machine... or a knock on the door from someone dressed as/ acting as part of the story. Just some ideas in case the staff is listening ;) As-is, I would say that Mystery Room is as fun as you make it for yourself - but didn't live up to what I thought a $20 per-person experience should be. read more

I wish I could give this place a negative stars review. They get a 1 because that is the least you can do. So the employees were the rudest two human beings I have ever encountered in my life. Like miserable beyond a doubt people. We hit the button for the clue, nobody came for 10 minutes, clicked it again and it was considered our two clues. Ridiculous. We got yelled at for being too loud, newsflash it is a bunch of cubes set up with open tops and voices carry. We were not being unnecessarily loud to be rude, we were excited and trying to work together. At the other escape room I did at the end, they walk you through your clues and what you missed to finish solving it. The employee was rude and said that we needed to leave because they had other customers to deal with. There was nobody else in there. I will be writing to corporate. My family did the Houdini room and was not impressed. We have done close to 30 rooms and this was by far the worse one. There are random puzzles that have nothing to do with the room. The call them ghost clues which a lot of escape rooms have but they have an over abundance of them.When we asked for a clue( you only get two) it took the staff member two minutes to get there. She came in with papers that contained the clues but could not explain the clue she was giving us. She read it right from the papers and was extremely rude when we asked her explain it again because we did understand the instructions. They only give you 50 minutes to solve the room but charge you the same amount as most escape rooms. This is not worth the money. Show less read more

Did the Treasure Island Escape Room which was a lot of fun. I ended up finishing in ~30 minutes and then did the level three bonus in ~10 minutes to escape with about ten minutes left. The clues and props were good. Nicole and Lyndsey were helpful with telling us the rules and giving us a hint when we were stuck. I'd definitely recommend the escape room, but would try to get a deal from Groupon as the $25 per person gets expensive with large groups or families. Would also like to see the room themes switch up a bit more frequently, but haven't completed all 8 yet. read more

The staff personnel were friendly and helpful. The venue was clean and well kept. The puzzles worked as designed. For the price, this is not actually too bad a value. All of that said, I would say a person is better off to spend a bit more and go to another venue. These "puzzles" are all basically about solving riddles to obtain word/number combinations to open padlocks that lead to more riddles that open more padlocks, until getting a card key to open the room. I have been to over 25 escape rooms around the US and in Canada. I can always have fun with even a moderate effort for an escape room. I went with a friend on a groupon he got for his birthday and didn't even have to pay. I still felt ripped off. With a nice bright, spacious lobby and tiny cheaply-designed rooms, this was obviously a business made solely to capitalize on first-time escape-room attendees or mall-goers who want to check out what the escape room craze is all about. What a terrible way to be introduced to this normally terrific and unique group activity! While most escape rooms have various thematic puzzles and usually multiple rooms with a fully-realized environment, Mystery Room seems content to load groups into repurposed dressing rooms with white walls and a couple pieces of furniture. Having spent about $300 on their rooms, compared to tens of thousands that usually go into designing a good escape room, they even have the nerve to charge money for any hint you want while playing the game! I don't like to write bad reviews at all, but this place so obviously seeks to take advantage of its customers and make as much money as possible knowing that most people in the area are new to escape rooms and will not have anything to compare it to. This is a zero out of ten on any scale. Yes, go try an escape room somewhere. They are a blast. However, avoid this place as they have no respect at all for the genre or their customer. read more

We loved the theme and BRie and Lindsey were super helpful in giving hints that kept us moving without giving too much away. I have done many other escape the rooms and loved them. I was very excited to try this one but was pretty disappointed. The first room I tried was done pretty well. It was Sherlock level 3. The problem was they didn't have the right locks in the right location. We asked for a hint and he found that two locks were switched and that's why we couldn't get in. He added time on because we were working on that clue with the right code for about 15 minutes. I just figured, mistakes happen so I gave it another shot. Today we did escape from Alcatraz level 3 and it was terrible. The hints were all terrible and there was no logic to them at all. We got stuck many times on silly things that would not have held us up had the clues actually worked. There were about 10 locks and I'm not sure we were even close to the end. When the buzzer went off I was sure we were having the same issue as we had before with the lock. We understood the clue and were using a directional lock. I asked the attendant if he could tell me what that particular answer was and he refused and said it was against the rules and he was too busy. I'm still 90% positive that we were doing the right thing. Every escape the room that I have failed have walked us through the last few steps to complete the puzzle. Unfortunately, I will never return to this location because of this. If I'm going to pay $20 to enter, they should guarantee the locks will work. Giving me a discount on a future visit would have made me happy; anything that would acknowledge that they made a mistake and I shouldn't suffer for it. read more

I know it was level one and kid friendly (I brought two) but it could have been better. The last clue to get out made no sense and even the guy couldn't figure it out without the answer first. I have nothing to compare this to, but my girlfriends and I had a lot of fun doing level one of Alcatraz! Some easy stuff and some thinking required. For a mall that didn't have much, going here and dinner after at Waxys was a perfect girls night out with lots of laughs. I do recommend hanging your own group of 8 (to fill the room) or picking a room and time when you'll have the room to yourself as my friends and I agreed we may not have spoken up about some of our silly ideas if we were working the room with strangers. read more

I'm a huge fan of the mystery rooms. They're super creative in their creation of these rooms and the service is fantastic despite there only being a few employees. One particular employee, Dylan, was extremely kind and friendly. He led me and my friends to the apocalypse room. When we were struggling and pressed the hint button, he came in and gave us a vague but well-intended hint. My smarter friends got it immediately and we continued the rest of the room. When we finally got out, after the time ran out, Dylan came around and showed us the solutions to certain things we couldn't figure out. Then he offered to take a fun picture with props and waved us off as he attended to another customer. It was an all around great experience and I would go again. read more
