I found myself visiting this restaurant after reading a blog which touted it as one of the better breakfast cafes in Prague. After making the trip, I finally arrived to Eska. The waiter was incredibly kind by providing a me a table outside, and directing me inside to order. He recommended the breakfast Karlin, which I decided to opt for. I also ordered a slaný šnek with bacon pastry and a cold brew coffee. My first time having the pastry and I was delighted with the tasted. A pleasant sight and an even better taste. Tasting the cold brew was quite the experience as well. Wonderful tasting coffee and the euphoric caffeine kick which accompanied it. At this time, I was also able to dig into some of their lemonade which was fermented. Tasting like a kombucha, it was delicious and settled my stomach incredibly. The Karlin breakfast came out soon after, about 10 minutes later. Sizable to say the least, it was two eggs on bread with their marinated trout. Eggs tasted wonderfully, fish tasted fresh, and smothered in the hollandaise created a delicious breakfast. Following that, I dug into the curd cheese with berries. So sweet and perfect in portion to end a meal, I savored every bite. A wonderful covered outdoor seating area, fresh local ingredients, and diverse dishes of every kind made for a great experience here. The kindness the staff showed, and calm atmosphere facilitates the perfect environment for the food to dance in. We walked from our hotel, the Hilton, looking for a restaurant where the people from Prague eat. We asked several locals are we're directed here. This is a comfortable restaurant where you review the menu and then go to the counter to order. The food was good, not great. We sat outside and there is great energy among the diners-both inside and out. The best dishes we ordered were the Asparagus soup and breakfast Eska. The soup wasn't warm enough but the taste was great. My wife ordered a fermented soft drink that was extremely refreshing. I had the Dva Kohouti, which translates to "2 rooster beer". It was pretty good. The beer is in can, I prefer draft beer, there's lots of it in Prague. My main dish-potatoes in ash-which was potatoes in cream with small pieces of smoked salmon was a bit disappointing. read more

I visited this restaurant with my girlfriend. This was her second time, but mine first. It's far from the old town, but nothing like Bolt or Uber can take you. We were greeted by a cute host, and she pointed us upstairs, where all the dining tables were located. We were greeted by another host, who showed us our table. The process could have been smoother. The service was alright because my server forgot to bring my beer, so I gave it 4 stars. But the food was good. I ordered the 2 serving with 2 wine that pairs with your food. But for wine, the sommelier gets to pick it. I ordered the Re-hydrated beetroot for a starter, it was delicious with a little acidity and powerful vinegar flavor, but I liked it. The Main entree I ordered Hanger Steak. They cooked it rare. The texture was nice and not chewy. It had some blood from the meat. I prefer medium rare. 4/5 I would go back but ask them if I can have the steak at different cooked a little longer and have one host do all, not hand you off. read more

One of the most intriguing stops on our food tour, partly because it's located in a more residential neighborhood that is two stops on the metro from the city center. Lovely restaurant on two levels with stairs and as you go up the stairs, you can look down into the kitchen to see what's going on and how clean it is. Here's what we had. Amazing bread baked in the shop with a salted butter SERVED ON A ROCK. How damned cool is that? Potatoes cooked in ashes with a cream and leek sauce called "kefir" that is some sort of creamed yogurt. The potatoes were amazing. Roast chicken breast with cabbage. Beautiful rich flavor, well cooked and delicious. I'd eat this all day. A gin and tonic with their house-distilled gin with their house-made tonic, to which they added carrot, beet, apple and a grape. It was delicious! I'm absolutely a fan! Eska is a true gem located in the Karlin neighborhood and was one of our favorite stops in Prague. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the interior is a converted warehouse with a coffee shop and open kitchen on the main floor, with a main dining area upstairs. We totally went to town here for brunch, and everything was so delicious! The menu definitely leans more toward modern european. The potatoes in ash, smoked fish, dried egg yolk, and kefir was amazing. I would highly recommend this dish to any foodie. It was so unexpected and the flavors were so unique. I've giving this five stars because my vegetarian dining partner absolutely loved it. I was disappointed in the potatoes in ash since I kept reading how good this was and it wasn't that great, so I would take half a star off for that, but I'm rounding up. The food is very tasty, and presented in a unique way. Just get the tasting menu, and don't try to put in an extra order of potatoes in ash like I did because you've read everywhere that this is the dish to get. It is not. Try focusing on all the different flavors of the other dishes, that were all very good. I didn't find the area sketchy either. It was fine ubering in and out of there. The experience at Eska was full of contradictions in sight and taste. Setting A sketch neighborhood and across from a concert venue is what greets you when you walk up, but inside is a vibrant kitchen with hard working chefs. Walk upstairs for dinner and you leave the active kitchen and feel like you might be in a cafeteria or casual dining - ie order and put a number on table. Waitstaff All were professional, courteous and responsive. They worked well as a team. Sommelier knew her wines as well. But some who delivered the food could not fully explain some of the dishes. I will chalk that up to language differences. Food As noted, a lot of hard working and well meaning chefs. The food often looked good but lacked flavor and/or texture. We had the 5 course tasting menu. 3 of the 4 dishes had capers. Disclaimer- I am not the biggest fan of capers, but eat them as chef would want. That said, unless it was gourmet capers season, I would have preferred a different way to approach some of the flavor builds. We were unimpressed with the signature potato appetizer. There was so much charcoal on the potatoes that the white sauce turned the dish to a dingy gray color once they were cut up. The carrot dish was a bore. Carrots are not the most exciting food to feature to start with. The sweetness of the fig jam worked, but this is more what you put next to a main, than a stand alone app. The chicken entree was - chicken. Nothing bad, nothing good. THE. MOST. AMAZING dining experience in Prague. We were completely blown away! We came here on a recommendation from a friend of mine, and did I mention we were blown away? Potatoes in ash. If you've never had this, well, go ahead and book your ticket to the Czech Republic. It sounds intimidating, but it's just referencing how the potatoes are cooked. This dish is so hearty and comforting, made with potatoes, smoked fish, dried egg yolk, and kefir. Imagine the creamiest potato soup that's satisfying in ways you couldn't even imagine. *sigh* Eska is so cool because the bottom level is more coffee shop + bakery, and the top floor is the restaurant. You want reservations, for sure. It was also cool to see such an industrial vibe amongst the typical Beauty and the Beast Prague architecture. I fell in love with the Breakfast Eska: fermented wheat, mushrooms, eggs, bread, ham, horseradish, and an accompanying "soft drink." The fermented soft drinks were SO interesting, and we tried the apple cinnamon and asparagus. Sounds crazy but both of them were so good. the omelet was also wonderful, but the potatoes in ash were the star (in case you couldn't tell.) Loved Eska in Praha! This is the place to come for breakfast. It is a little off the beaten path, but it's an easy Uber ride away and so worth a visit. Perfect eggs are hard to accomplish, and they nailed it here at Eska. The bread basket breakfast was a terrific share for the table and included a modern take on Czech bread classics. The expresso drinks were expertly made (at the upstairs drinks counter, so fun!) and delicious. Each dish was modern, simple but expertly prepared and locally sourced, the space itself is light and beautiful, and the service is professional and attentive. Locally sourced wine pairings and dishes in rustic style, set within a warehouse atmosphere that makes it easy to be causal. On the ground floor, you walk into what looks like an open kitchen and take-out counter, but to the right is a host stand that offers seated dining upstairs. We had a party of around 20ppl and reserved in advance with a set menu of three courses served with three drinks. Delicious complimentary bread and sparkling water was provided on the table as we arrived. Our first course was charred baked potatoes in a sour cream and onion style sauce that could also double as a creamy potato soup, served with a lighter bodied and spicy Pinot Noir from the Brno area. Second course was a baked chicken and vegetable dish that was juicy and buttery with a small bit of breading and extra seasoning, paired with a buttery Oaked white wine. Dessert course was an apple tart covered in a bourbon cream sauce and served with a dark espresso roast. Looks like a neighborhood party n early stage of gentrification. It's outside the main city. Right next to a boarded up warehouse. Looks like a converted warehouse. Gives a clean classy hipster vibe. Wide open clean, bright, and airy. Completely open kitchen on first floor. Service was excellent. Polite, patient, and helpful. The food was fresh. Definitely has a Nordic flare to it. Smoked fish and pickled vegetables. Espresso was clean and smooth. The wild berry lemonade was refreshing. Loved how they served fresh bread with butter on a rock. The butter was sprinkled with green salt. So good!! Ash potatoes were quite good. Portions are deceptively filling. Bread Waldorf was just ok. It's a Waldorf salad on a slice of bread. I liked the granola. Very nutty though. Breakfast Eska comes with a bowl of fermented wheat, almost like a large hybrid of rice and barley. Breakfast Karlin is scrambled eggs topped with smoked trout with side of pickled vegetables. Also get a sweet curd that tastes like yogurt. The Czech breakfast is basically a deconstructed salami sandwich. Salami, cheese, and a baguette. Loved the side of pickled vegetables. We had high hopes for this restaurant for breakfast and they were completely met! We didn't have reservations and it was Sunday morning so we made sure to arrive there right when they opened at 9am. They were nice enough to seat us with just a small friendly warning that we would need to finish by 1015 since people with reservations would have our table. No problem! I got the eska brekafast which has fermented wheat, mushrooms, egg, bread, ham, horseradish, and a soft drink. The soft drink was a cucumber fermented drink that was kind of like kambucha, really good. The fermented wheat was delicious as well. It was a perfect breakfast in terms of great food without totally weighing you down the rest of the day. My wife got the bakers breakfast which had sweet roll, roll, marble cake, sweetened curd cheese, jams, nut butter, kefir. She liked it but didn't like the kefir so I got to have it, score! I love yogurt sour drinks now, 6 year old me would be ashamed. Coffee was pretty good, the only hiccup was we asked for sugar and they forgot and brought it to us much later when we asked again. Oh yeah they also accidentally brought someone else's plate to us and I took some nice photos of it but then they took it away so in my photos you'll notice some food that doesn't match my description. Overall a great culinary experience, but not worth the trip if you're staying in Prague center. I got the recommended potato dish, and only had half of it as while it was tasty it was immediately overly filling. While this dish is meant to be creamy, too much of the focus is on the cream and not enough on the other ingredients. There's so much great food in Prague that I wouldn't make the trip to Karlin/ Eska again. The decor is meager (put nicely) and the atmosphere is of locals having a working lunch. My local friends brought me here for Sunday brunch. Upon entering the patio area, I was taken back by how great the space looked and was continued to be awed by it as we went up to the hostess stand. Under the direction of my friend I was instructed to check out their baked goods because they change every day. Everything looked delicious, but I cannot read Czech so I didn't know most of what I was looking at. The hostess and the rest of the service staff seemed aggravated we had a child. When they sat us down at a huge eight top table (there was only three of us with a sleeping toddler in a stroller), we asked if we could have the smaller four top table next to us that would be more out of the way and able to accommodate the stroller. The hostess rudely said no, it was for reservations. We told her we did have reservations as well. She said no and sat us down. It wasn't my kid and I used to be a bartender/server so I am usually more sympathetic to the service staff, but this time I definitely thought they were being ridiculous seeing that the huge upstairs seating area was almost empty. It did fill in a little bit, but there were tons of four top tables open while we ate and when we were leaving. The entire stay, our server was very rude. She corrected us in a pompous way several times. Everything seemed to be a chore to ask her foot or she responded to our questions as we were idiots. I can assure you, we are not. I asked her what the bakery items that were available, she said I had to go downstairs and look. Is this how a server is supposed to respond in a higher end establishment? I told her I did and I don't read Czech, she seemed so bothered she had to tell me what they had. When I did choose one from her list, she came back five minutes later to tell me they ee out. My friend requested her scrambled eggs be not runny and cooked well, they came out extremely under cooked. My omelette on the other hand was way over cooked. It was filled with some deliciously fresh ham, mushrooms, and greens so it made up for it. The other restaurants this group owns are five star establishments all the way, this one however is not. Aesthetically this restaurant is five stars, just a beautiful modern design. The staff is at most one star. Finally the food, it was a conundrum of one star and five star items. I've had amazing food at every restaurant I have visited in Prague during my visits, but this one unfortunately disappointed. read more

Very interesting concept of turning an industrial warehouse to a restaurant. It was on the Michelin guide. Therefore I decided to try it out. I think overall the food ok, however with other great less expensive options in Czech, Eska was just average for me. At least for the lunch meal that I had. I may/may not get a better experience if I had went for dinner. The potatoes in ash, smoked fish, dried egg yolk, kefir was supposed to be their specialty. It just felt they mashed different flavors together. It didn't well and it was slightly off. It was not bad, but I was expecting for a Michelin guide Bib gourmard place. If you are staying in old town Prague, you will need to take about a 10 minute Uber ride to get here but it's SO worth it!! This restaurant is very unique in so many ways. Their drinks are unique, their dishes are not something you can find anywhere else and the decor is unique and so great. We came back here more than once because this place gave us so much positive vibes and creativity!! We love traveling for food and finding gems like this one. *This review is based mostly on the aesthetics of the place, as I did not come here for a full meal* Looking to escape the summer heat, I came here with a friend as he had mentioned that they have air conditioning. I had one of their Pavlova cakes and it was simply delicious, not to mention super cute. The upstairs portion of the restaurant is very industrial and a nice change from the architecture of Old Town. I loved the design of the paper menus that they had and the artwork/clean feeling of the place. The bathrooms were probably the best part, as they had hand towels and lotion. As we were leaving, the waiter gave us free postcards which was a nice touch. My only complaint was that the waiter appeared to be annoyed with us the whole time since we had only come to order things from the bakery even though it was 3:00 PM and the place was not that busy yet. My biggest regret was that I did not get to come here for dinner to try their Degustation menu. If I'm ever back in Prague again, I know where I'm going to come! read more

The food, drink, space, concept make Eska a place that I wish we had in New York, except that it would be impossible to get a table and loud af. Nothing like Eska. I came here on a Taste of Prague food tour (which is 100% worth it btw) and had an entire meal, but enjoyed it so much I thought it was worth returning to again even in my short time in Prague. There is a nice outdoor seating area but the upstairs seating is just straight up VIBES. For food - The bread and butter are incredible. Gin and Eska tonic. And do not leave without trying the potatoes in ash!!! Service is impeccable. This restaurant was highly recommended by a few of our tour guides for breakfast/brunch, so we decided to give it a try. The restaurant is not exactly in the city center but close enough to walk or a quick Uber ride. The inside was very clean and had a warehouse/industrial look. I'm not really a breakfast person so we came here for brunch. We shared the bread with pumpkin and curd cheese and the bread with roast beef (which also included celery, apple, and chives). I preferred the pumpkin bread over the roast beef...but both were good. We also had the smoked beef tartar (served with shallots, pickles, and grilled bread) and it was so good!!! I had the soup from Jerusalem artichoke and it was DELICIOUS!!! Perfectly flavored and just soooo good!! I had the lamb with turnips as my entree and it was also very good...not the best lamb I've had but still good. Such an amazing breakfast! I did a bunch of research, and found this place- a total foodie's dream. Everything here is handmade, locally sourced, and delicious. They're out there getting their own honey, fermenting their own dairy to get kefir and yogurts- I was blown away. The restaurant is designed downstairs to be an open kitchen, and you can see how the restaurant runs like a well-oiled machine, with cleanliness and precision. The cook staff all worked so well together to get the dishes prepared! I got a lemonade, made with fermented lemon balm, which was unlike any drink I'd ever had- it was slightly effervescent with the fermentation 'bite.' Nom! I also got fresh yogurt and fruit, which was handmade and again, phenomenal. Their bread was all made that morning, the butter was churned locally from talented cows. The whole space is very industrial, it used to be a factory where I think they made water coolers. But now, it's been lovingly turned into this kitchen, with lots of reminders that it used to be an industrial space. Now a lot of the shelves and walls are decorated with canned locally foraged foods. Restrooms are upstairs, and they don't have an elevator. Eska - an amazing restaurant located about 10 minutes from the heart of Prague - is part of the Ambiente group which owns many restaurants throughout Prague. This was our second breakfast, the first being at Boho. We all were pretty full so we ordered light. Even though we didn't eat a full course meal, everything we ate was absolutely delicious! It was also really nice to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city to relax and hang out with a great cup of coffee. Eska's dishes have a Nordic flare with a focus on vegetables. I was looking forward to trying this restaurant during my visit to Prague and was happy to hear our walking tour guide recommend it as well. It's located in a bakery, which I unfortunately didn't have the chance to try. The ambience is modern, but warm, think hip farmhouse with lots of wood and light. The service was very good, with all dishes explained and suggestions for pairings gently mentioned. As others have mentioned, the ash potatoes are amazing! Our tour guide raved about them so I elected to have them as my main meal. I also tried the tartare, which was also quite good. Unfortunately, I was not hungry enough to order much more, but the potatoes were satisfying all in themselves. I was visiting Prague a few months ago and took the subway near the Old Town Square to Eska for breaskfast. The trip took about 20 minutes one-way. This place is definitely worth visitng especially if you'd like to be away from tourist "hot spots" with mediocre food and expensive price tags. I loved the industrial country chic decor and the overall relaxed ambience of the restaurant. Eska serves Modern European food with limited menu items but unique combinations. I ordered "potatoes in ash, smoked fish, dried egg yolk, kefir" as my main dish. The simple ingredients were so well-paired that the smoky, crispy skin of the potatoes was contrast by the soft, fluffy interior and the creamy herbed kefir. The entire dish was bursting with flavor and texture. In addition to the unique menu, Eska has a bakery as well that offers freshly baked sweet rolls and bread loafs. My meal at Eska was one the most memorable ones during my trip in Prague, and I will defintiely return to try their lunch and dinner menu. read more

I have been wracking my brain to try and figure out if French Laundry was as good or better - not to mention the many other incredible meals I have had around the world over the years. I can say that my experience as Eska was one I will remember for many years to come. I will also say that I will go back to Prague - and I will go back and east at Eska when I do. They were packed on a Sunday morning, but they still gave me a seat at one of their downstairs tables by the kitchen, which is also nice to be able to see where the magic happens. Their espresso drinks are great. I had an awesome flat white. For my meal, I went with the server's recommendation and had the potatoes in ash. For dessert, I had this pastry with a fluffy merengue-type filling. Everything was delicious, and I would definitely go back. Service was fantastic. A simple burnt fingerling potato is elevated to perfection here. Flavorful and so rich, a serving is only two (!) pieces. The rest of the menu is excellent, although it doesn't rise to the level of mind-blowing perfection that the potato is. Sous vide chicken breast was perhaps the second most interesting, and the desserts were 50/50: the kremrole was superb, the other items (cake? raisin cake?) were loved by some but not others. Service is very good, ambiance is nice upstairs but much, much better at the large chef's table downstairs. A very nice place for breakfast/brunch with different choices of food and drinks. The atmosphere is super light and nice and clean. You just feel like on a nice carefree morning (maybe it was also due to the fact that I was on vacation ;) The food was very delicious and nutricious - even too much food indeed - the prices are decent though. One can also get a wine or prosecco or even a cocktail for breakfast which is great! Just a place to recommend definitely. You should make a reservation though as it tend to be pretty filled. The best/weirdest/most innovative meal I had in Prague. For drinks I had a gin and tonic, with a twist. There was pieces of rosemary and apple slices inside the drink. I enjoyed munching on the apples and having a nice cocktail BUT occasionally got a sprig of rosemary which wasn't ideal. Before we had our main course they brought over an amuse-bouche. I am honestly not sure what it was but I ate it anyway. It was a little pretty piece of food but packed a lot of unusual yet delicious flavor in a bite. Their bread and butter was absolute flames. It was so fancy and served on pieces of granite but honestly probably the best bread and butter I've ever put in my mouth. For another appetizer I ordered artichoke soup and again absolute flames. It was creamy and a different texture than I am used to but holy cow wowee!! So delicious and not too filling. Wish I could have it cuddled up next to a blazing fire. For dinner I ordered potatoes cooked in ash?? I know super weird. I was adventurous and so happy I took the chance to try something different. It was two whole potatoes with ash wrapped around it, it sat in a kind of sauce with trout underneath it. Once all mixed together, I was absolutely amazed and taken aback. Being someone who has always been afraid of fish, I was so impressed. If this is on the menu still when you visit, order it. You will NOT be disappointed. At the end of the meal they brought out traditional Czech Christmas cookies for us all to try. The service was impeccable and this was one of the best restaurants I went to while abroad. Ps.
