Eska is the type of restaurant that would not have been my first choice for breakfast, But I'm glad I did make the journey here. It's awesome and the food was surprisingly alright. We stopped here as part of a walking food tour with Urban Adventures, and came away very impressed by our experience. There are two floors, the main floor which has all of the food prep going on, with a wide selection of prepackaged foods, breads, and pastries for sale. Hands down, the best food we had in Prague. I'd come across a recommendation for their brunch but was more excited by the lunch and dinner menu. We walked from the touristy bit of town through a park and worked up an appetite by the time we arrived. It's a cute little neighbourhood with what seems to be plenty of trendy shops, cafes, offices, and restaurants. We made a booking online and were offered the chance to sit outside or inside. We stayed outside which was sheltered but still very nice on a warm but breezy day. When I visited the loo, most people were upstairs inside, which was very bright and pretty loud, everyone was clearly having a great time. Outside was more chill in the middle of the day on a Sunday, which suited us. We tried most of the vegetarian options, and I would gladly have them again. As everyone says, the potatoes in ash and the wheat berry are both stunning. House bread and butter was lovely. Wine by the glass was reasonably priced and they had an unusual choice. It was on the expensive side for Prague standards, but felt cheap on our first day outside of London. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who loves creative and interesting food in Prague. read more

I took a walking food tour of Prague and we ended at this absolute lovely restaurant! There are dinning tables upstairs and large community tables downstairs which I appreciate when traveling alone, such a great way to meet new people! They also sell amazing local foods you can grab on your way out. I purchased a bottle of Gin to take back to the states with me and it was so worth it. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because I'm on vacation with some wonderful people and we will never forget our experience at Eska (not positively). We had a group of 7 which may have been part of the problem(?) but we each ordered the 5 course chef meal with beverage pairings. It took about 35-50 minutes between each plate/pairing of the courses to be delivered to our table. Additionally the "paired" drink portion would be delivered to the table and then 20-35 min later the paired course would arrive. Atmosphere-wise the place was cool/hip but unbearable. It was mid-October and about 60 degrees outside, but for some reason the temperature inside is kept at roughly 80-84 degrees. Most of our party had to take turns going outside to cool off. We're from the states so maybe aren't used to our dinner evening taking a total of 5 hours... but we wanted to let tourists know the food is decent, small portions, slightly overpriced for the area. read more

The Karlin neighborhood is super random - mostly residential and a little industrial. Walking here was not particularly pleasant, so I would either Uber or take public transportation. When you walk in, it feels just like Tartine Manufactory in SF - exposed pipes in the interior of the ceiling, a mix of white and wood. The downstairs area is a coffee bar / bakery, and the restaurant is upstairs. For wines, we had a Sauvignon blanc but also decided to give a white Czech wine a try - it was called Divide 2015. I have no idea what wine it's made of, but I think I'm done with Czech wines. The menu is actually quite Tartine-esque, too, but with a more Nordic spin. - Potatoes in ash: roasted potatoes with smoked fish, keffir, foam, and dried egg yolk and chives on top - it's good to dip the bread in the leftover sauce - Breakfast Karlin: soft boiled egg with smoked trout and lots of vegetables. On the side was a sweetened curd (like yogurt but better) with apricots and apples. It also came with a house lemonade (cucumber or apricot) - Omelette: they were able to do egg whites, which was nice; it had Prague ham, mushrooms, spinach, and a mild cheese - Sausages from nase maso with sweet mustard, horseradish, and bread; the sausages were like 3 giant long hot dogs with a nice crisp casing Service was friendly. Bathrooms are clean. It's pretty spacious inside. We didn't have a reservation for a random weekday lunch, but you should probably make one on the weekends. read more

The best time!! We didn't have a reservation and they somehow found a table for us on a Saturday night. The staff was so friendly, trying to accommodate us. The five course meal we decided to get was the best investment ever. From the beef tartar to the noodles with mushrooms, lamb and a salad with ice cream... I have t been surprised with so much flavor in a long time. I now understand why they have received a Michelin award... congrats on this restaurant. A definite must come back! read more

THE FOOD. Is beautiful. Well prepared. I some how had the absolutely best most amazing yogurt of my life (I think they may have referred to it as cheese?) it came with the Karlin breakfast. I will be dreaming about this yogurt. The Eska breakfast isn't bad, it's just that the bread with the ham on it is enormous and then you have a big bowl of lentils and mushroom in it which isn't super appetizing; I'd say halve the serving size of this meal or split with a friend. The Karlin was very satisfying, although some of the vegetables were very firm/hard to bite. The butter that comes with the bread is amazing. A great place outside the tourist center of Prague. The modern decor creates a great, casual vibe. The focus is on innovative takes on Czech cuisine and the ordering process (choose any two or five items from the menu) allows the eater to have a similarly no traditional meal. FAVORITE MEAL IN PRAGUE HANDS DOWN I saw this place on Yelp while looking up good breakfast places in Prague and immediately told my friend we are going here no excuses. The interior is very clean, minimal, and industrial (aka total Instagram worthy if that is your aesthetic). It reminds me of some cafes in downtown LA in terms of style and crowd. There are two levels, with the main dining level on top. The kitchen and bar is open so you can see them make the coffee etc. There was only two of us and we sat at a two person table. Then we ended up ordering 4 entrees (whoops), and the server had to push another table and said it wouldn't all fit. For our dishes we ordered the ash potatoes (I know it sounds a bit odd, but trust me order this!), the muesli with yogurt and fruits, the sausage and toast, and this egg mushroom fermented grain dish *drool*. All dishes were 10/10. We devoured our food and only had some bread left that we couldn't finish. Service was great. Location wise it is away from the main touristy areas of Prague (Old Town) on the east side of the city. It is worth the trek outside of the touristy areas. If I ever come back to Prague, this is on my must revisit list. read more

Really enjoyed dining here. Ambiance was nice as it was't overly crowded on a Monday night at 7pm. Our waitress was super sweet. Food was good. People raved about the in-house butter...it was butter but presented well :). I enjoyed the tartar but I loved the fermented elderflower drink as it was minimally tart. Really liked the potatoes in ash. The tenderloin was nice and smoky. The beet was good but all beet salads are good. We came here after looking at the reviews on Yelp. The restaurant has a nice interior with a clean industrial look. It's a nice place for breakfast/lunch for business people. I say business people because we mainly saw those kind of people here. We have been to a couple of good restaurants in Prague and compared to their prices, the prices here were too high for what they serve. The portions are rather small too. I guess the price has to do with the fancy interior, the service, open kitchen and the toilet with cotton hand towels for each customer. We got offered a bottle of water and thought it was for free, but ended up paying for that as well. The coffee was good, nothing you cannot get at any other coffee place. I ordered the roasted beef with bread. The crust of the bread was too hard to even cut with a knife. The roast beef slices were delicious though. The portion was okay for breakfast/brunch. I would not go back as it was just okay for me. I suggest you go to another restaurant and pay 300 Kronen to have a good meal. read more

This review is about a month late. Bottom line, I didn't love it. The star of the show is obviously the signature potatoes in ash - I'm not a huge fan of smoked fish but it was divine Simple ingredients and beautifully done. We did a tasting menu and other courses included beef tartare, salmon, and an asparagus dish. It just wasn't very memorable. The restaurant is beautiful with an open kitchen and industrial feel. The highlight, however, was our absolute rock star sommelier, Barbara, who paired local wines instead of the already epic selections to the right (actually nine) course tasting menu. She was on par in her creativity with one and two star Michelin restaurants with ad much passion for her trade as we could possibly hope for. Note: sit in the kitchen! Upstairs is probably fine, but rather generic. Kitchen seats are off the carts fabulous and we were able to secure a six-top same day. Truly excellent modern take on Czech food, Eska was a stop on a food tour we did of Prague and we came back for a full meal the next day. Service is friendly and casual, dining room is open and modern and the food is excellent. Particularly recommend the ashed potatoes with carp sauce, as someone who generally dislikes any fish dish I found this absolutely delicious. Minus one star for enticing us with unique and interesting appetizers and then serving a good but completely uninspired steak. After the creative appetizers I was expecting a transformation of the steak, but it was just a steak, perfectly enjoyable but not up to the creative standard they set for themselves. read more

Huge Bread bakery plus restaurant in the cool Karlin district. In my time away from Prague, Eska came about and has really picked up steam! They were even honored as a 2018 Michelin restaurant (I don't know too much beyond Michelin stars, but I figure if you're on a list associated with Michelin, it's a good thing). They are known by many locals and expats for their excellent bread and other dishes in the restaurant. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to dine in, only order from the bakery. The place is 2 levels, restaurant upstairs, and looks like a huge warehouse. Along with baking bread, they have traditional pastries which my Czech friend said were reminiscent of ones his grandma made when he was young. Cream cheese and poppy seed are extremely popular fillings in Czech pastries, so I had to pick up some. Also with the bread, their natural butter is popular too and you can buy a tub. Everything here is promoted as fresh, natural and straight from the farm ingredients. There's a good feel to being here, and I can't wait to come back to dine in! read more

A great new addition to the Ambiente group. It is located in an old industrial building. The down floor is dedicated to a bistro with bakery and the upper floor is a restaurant. I have come here for a Sunday brunch and even though the offer seemed a bit limited to me, we ended up being very nicely surprised. The food was delicious and so were the wines that were recommended to us by the sommelier. The staff is very friendly and so is the overall armosphere of the restaurant. It has taken me a long time to figure out how to write this review. So long, in fact, that the seasons have changed twice over and so has the menu since I last sat at my table at the sparse but well decorated restaurant for a late night solo dinner. I came in at about 10PM, I wasn't sure if I was in the right place until I saw the bakery down stairs. I went up and was promptly seated. the service was prompt, polite, but pretty self contained. No chatty waiters, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I was presented with bread, water, and a dill seasoned kaffir pallet cleanser. It was delicious, I was surprised, and suddenly very excited for the experience to come. I order the grilled venison which was served with juniper berries and beets. When the dish came out it was plated like a piece of art. Absolutely beautiful. In music, there is a term called word painting. Using the music to accentuate or mirror what the words are saying. The plating of this dish was food painting. The way it was plated was like a modern abstract depiction of hunting in the forest, in the most appetizing way possible. The smells, the colors, the beautiful cook on the venison, the first bite was so good that I actually teared up a bit. To accompany my meal I order a Czech Pinot. I was a little nervous because I'd heard nothing but negative thins about Czech wine before my trip. I went out on a limb because I really didn't want to drink beer with such a wonderful meal. Well, let me say, this pinot tasted like nothing I'd had before. It was this wonderfully vegetal and peppery flavor that went perfectly with the grilled venison. Through out my trip I noticed that while Czech wine isn't going to be what you expect, it really broadens your mine on flavor profiles for wine. I was really pleasantly surprised by a lot of the wine that I tasted. To close out my dinner I got the juniper ice cream with fruits of the forest and a rosemary merengue. This dessert was probably one of the bests I have had in my entire life. I felt like I was floating on air eating this dessert. It was so earthy yet light and just sweet enough to make you feel indulgent. Needless to say I was scraping the bottom of my dish for both parts of the me meal, and had I stayed in Prague a little longer, I likely would have done an encore. It was a singular experience I hope that the angels in this kitchen are successful for a very long time because anyone who makes food like that is a god send. If I'm ever back in Prague (which I hope is soon) this will be my first stop. read more

I don't ever write yelp reviews but I'm compelled. People must be informed. By way of background, I would describe myself as an American who is an informed, very practical, yet open minded food snob. In a nutshell, this place makes no sense and is extremely overpriced and pretentious compared to other outstanding, great restaurants in the area. The positives-- chic industrial decor, food tastes good. End of list. My partner and I opted for the 5 dish tasting menu. What we were served would not have been enough food for a premature newborn baby. It was 5 dishes TO SPLIT! Word of advice-- be very protective of your bread and butter. When you are being served several pieces of kale (to split, remember!), you'll be wishing you told that waitress to keep the bread and butter coming. At one point, on the 4th dish, my partner said she was full-- the most shocking moment of a night full of shocks. I nearly fell out of my seat but composed myself enough to lunge across the table and fork the last tiny piece of veal on the plate. Now here is what i truly don't understand -- we were each charged separately for the tasting menu-- the separate charge I might add, was more than any meal we had paid total on our trip to Prague up to that point.. The waitress specifically asked us when we ordered it we would both be getting it. Which begs the question-- could we have got the same amount of food if only my partner ordered off the tasting menu and then only paid once? Why would we have ordered the 5 course, over priced tasting menu when we could have picked 5 dishes on our own and paid less? Dropped by on a whim for dinner on new years eve. Hostess seated us without a reservation. Menu was limited to a three course meal probably due to the holiday. App was an assortment of roasted root veg + some sort of magical sour cream foam. Entree was a masterfully cooked fillet of fish with a tasty umami broth. Entree for the Mrs. was roasted cauliflower & mustard sauce. Desert was a cookie and boozy eggnog cream. All three courses were impressive and skillfully presented but I must say that the star of this meal was the bread and butter. Hard and crusty on the outside, soft warm and chewy on the inside. Butter was served with a healthy sprinkle of sea salt. My willpower was tested to avoid scarfing before receiving the first course. Seems silly that something so ubiquitous could be so memorable. One of the best brunch meals I've had- not just in Prague but back home. We had the egg patty which I can best describe it as a savory French toast. We love the flavors of the pickles and mustard with the brewed, egg and ham. My friend liked the combo veggie/ham but I really enjoyed the ham version (I think the pickles and mustard goes better with the ham). They also serve a fermented lemonade which is delicious. Not very sweet. Also, I hate kambucha because of the fermented flavor, this lemonade tastes nothing like that-- it's delicious. The bread sampler was amazing. Our favorite was the coffee cake that came with it. Finally, not only is this place cool/trendy but their entire staff was super friendly and attentive. Seriously, 5 stars alone for the staff!! This modern and stylish restaurant and bakery in an old factory building has it all: sober yet comfortable intérieur with wooden tables and industrial-chic lamps, a huge open kitchen right next to the ground-floor restaurant, and above all: delicious food! We were here for brunch, following a locals' recommendation, and were not disappointed. Quite the opposite, actually. Eska is such a treat and great addition to the Prague food scene. With a NOMA-esque feel, the decor was minimalist and warm, the staff were very friendly and attentive and overall we had a great experience. I came here with my husband and our two friends and we all went for the tasting menu as it was an easy choice and also seemed to offer the best of Eska. We enjoyed all the courses besides the "syreckova" mouse (really strong smelling Czech cheese), I don't think I would include it in the tasting menu as it is really for an acquired taste. Other than that I would definitely recommend to both tourists and locals. All dishes were original Czech dishes with a modern twist - so yummy! I would go back to Prague just for this restaurant. We were limited to what was open on Christmas and found Eska. Not only was it open, but everything we ate and drank was delicious. The service was great and our food was brought to us quickly after ordering. They have an open concept kitchen with coffee bad downstairs and a hostess will seat you upstairs. I had a salmon and egg dish that was tasty. My boyfriend had pumpkin soup and a salad that he enjoyed. The bread they bring with the meal is also really good. My meal came with a strawberry 'soda' which was light and refreshing. They also had an option of bottomless water which we appreciated. For dessert, we had a special Christmas brioche and it was a delicious way to end a delicious meal. The brunch was spectacular and we will plan to try dinner the next time we are in town. read more
