If you have to admit your loved one into memory care here, I strongly recommend putting cameras in the room. Or better yet, just don't do it. Find somewhere else. Anywhere. The residents are treated like obstacles that have to be avoided while collecting paychecks.

My mother recently passed away, having been a resident for the past 3 years at Pine Tree Villa…read more After a terrible experience of several months at a different, more expensive, nearby private facility, I knew the first time I entered Pine Tree Villa this was where I hoped my mother would live. Even though modest and not recently remodeled it is clean and comfortable and depending on the time of day, smells like something delicious is being prepared in the kitchen. She received the best care I could ever have hoped for. The staff were caring and respectful with all the residents, responding quickly to their needs and just 'being there' when required. They routinely performed welfare checks throughout the day and night. Some of the staff shared meal preparation duties, creating nutritious, tasty meals 3 times a day with snacks between if requested, as well as honoring individual requests (my Mom liked Ensure in her coffee and oatmeal). Lynn, the owner, and her staff are in constant contact with one another and with patient's family (if needed). Because of that, Lynn was able to alert me to specific changes in my mother's demeanor which allowed me to be present when she breathed her last breath. Lynn was always available by phone, if not personally, and is an exceptionally kind, competent and responsive individual. I had peace of mind knowing my mother was being cared for in this well managed, well organized, comfortable facility with exceptional staff where I felt welcomed as part of a family. I often told Lynn that if the time ever came and I should need to live in an assisted living facility, that is where I would want to be. I am forever grateful my mother received such loving care.

Having volunteered at a lot of care homes (therapy dog visits) Pine Tree Villa is clearly number one on the list for me. Caregivers who worked there 15+ years ago still work there and that alone is telling a lot. My recommendation is to not look at how fancy a care home is but look at the care itself. That's what truly matters. My other recommendation is to get on the waiting list when you feel it could be close. Don't wait until a major fall or other emergency happens. You can always say no if you feel it's not quite time yet but, as the scouts say, be prepared. I am glad we were. Check them out, go there, then if still in doubt maybe ask if you could talk to a close relative of another resident. Many like me are gladly willing to talk about their experiences. To me Pine Tree Villa is like extended family.

With her decline in physical and mental capabilities and being on Medicare, we admitted her to The Pines in Placerville. Overall, our experience with them has no complaints. Initially, she wasn't very happy to be there because of the differences compared to her private room at the hospital. However, I cannot fault The Pines for that, especially with how the staff treated her and our family. I have worked in a couple dozen nursing homes of various skill and funding levels; all over California and a few in Nevada. I knew what to expect from a place that we weren't paying thousands of dollars a month out of pocket for. I too, was nervous the first night she was transferred there. It can be loud; and there's alot of activity and my mom felt at times she wasn't receiving "service" as promptly as she would've liked. With that said, I very quickly began to know the staff personally and they were all friendly, professional and accommodating. It's very busy there-there is alot of residents and patients who were more worse off in ways than my mother and were far more demanding and not nice about it. The stress on the staff is alot. Yet, overall they handle it like pros. My mother was there just under two weeks before she unfortunately had to go back to the hospital and will probably not leave it alive. While she cannot personally express her feelings about The Pines, I spent everyday there, many times for most of the day and at all different times so I can speak from first hand experience: I know the reviews from others and the reputation this place has. The Director, Colby, you can tell is working very hard to turn that reputation around. The staff works very hard and I pray for their continued strength and determination in what they are doing because it is not an easy job and at times-maybe many times-seems thankless and unrewarding. Just know that for this family, you took an already difficult and emotional period of our lives and were able to ease this portion and truly give help when it was desperately needed. Special shout outs to Amy, Mikala, Colleen, Mai, Abraham, Maura, Michelle, Kelsey, Britni, Bill, Christina, Stephen, Samantha and so many more there that I can't remember your name or didn't catch it when we met: I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you did for my mother. Dr. Abraham was my APTA credentialed clinical instructor and has implemented a teaching program here for other doctoral students. He just recently had to go to a different facility temporarily for physical therapy. My family noticed in just 3 short weeks at the other facility his mental decline was so significant. It is heartbreaking to have one's own mother who was loved and cared for at home suddenly placed in a facility like this by an uncaring relative and to watch the mental and physical deterioration it is causing. My mom says she does not sleep well anymore, the screams of Altzheimer's afflicted housemates wake her at night. She gets up and rushes to their bedsides, trying to comfort them. The facility's owner was asked by my mom's Dr. to set up a home visit to monitor a medical problem she has, but she failed to do so. Often the phone is not answered when I try to call. Visiting is unpleasant in my mom's cramped room which contains er small bed, chair and a porta-potty. Although this place claims to accept pets, my mom was not allowed to take any of her pets which include small birds, small dogs and a cat. If you want your loved one to live surrounded by confused elderly people who their families have decided "cannot live at home", then this place will appeal to you!
