I'd give them a pass. Totally dysfunctional staff. They sound nice, but they aren't at all.

They have lots of activities, an awesome pool and spa ( I would swim with him frequently), beautiful grounds with chairs and tables where you can sit with a cocktail and take in the beautiful view of the small lake and the surroundings. We both thought the food was great in the dining room. If you have a craving for something and they have the fix'ins they will make it for you. I had mentioned to one of the waitress' I had such a craving for a rootbeer float. A while later she brought one out to me. Such thoughtfulness. They have two banquets during the year, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Buffet style, Prime rib, turkey, poached salmon with all the trimmings with desserts galore. When my husband started declining I contacted Hospice and between Hospice, me and the Caregivers at Eskaton he was in very good hands. The caregivers and med techs were wonderful. They treated my husband like he was their own grandfather. He was treated with dignity, love and some shed tears when he passed. He very much enjoyed the people he met. Some becoming good friends and they would meet mornings for breakfast. He was very well taken care of. I have no regrets.........

Marshall - The lovely response regarding test results. Still, no follow up from her regarding any symptoms the patient should be aware of.

The nurses in preop (thank you, Tanya) were gracious and thoughtful. The surgical nurse, Beth, was funny and kind, which helped put me at ease as he went back to surgery. Afterward, the nurses who supervised his recovery were gentle and helpful. Overnight, the RN Carrie and the aide, Claudia were attentive, thoughtful and patient. Our day nurse, Bryan was funny and very helpful (be sure to check out his shoes!) Overall, this was the best hospital experience I've had. It was clear that the staff (and doctors: hats off to Dr. Molitar, who came out following surgery to ease my concerns and let me know how the surgery went. He had been in surgery all day, although it was late, he took time to come out to update me personally,) anyway, it is abundantly Care that Marshall Hospital cares. From what I understand, they've come a long way.

I had a horrifying experience in April of 2024 here. I came for treatment for a neurological…read moredisorder that had become exacerbated, but was labeled psychotic, treated like I wasn't even a human being. I wasn't allowed to have visitors or make phone calls and there is no documentation in my records as to why my civil rights were revoked. It shouldn't matter if a person is truly psychotic or not, but staff here will treat you like a second-class citizen if they believe you are a psychiatric patient. Staff would not allow my husband to visit with me and they never even told me he showed up. I was devastated because I thought my husband had abandoned me when I was in a neurological crisis. When I requested my medical records, they were filled with errors, and they falsely documented that my husband agreed to transfer me to a psych ward. As if my husband doesn't know my medical history. He would never do that! Staff at Marshall documented that my rights to use the phone or have visitors were revoked. Whether you're on a 5150 hold or not, or a psychiatric patient or not, this is a violation of a person's Civil Rights and in violation of the Lanterman Petris Short Act ***(which BTW, the patient advocates and staff at Marshall told me they "never heard of the LPS Act", which is the law that governs 5150 Holds, and the law that California put into place in the 1960s TO END INDEFINITE HOSPITALIZATIONS AND CONSERVATORSHIPS and to make sure psychiatric patients did not have LESS RIGHTS THAN PRISONERS) My husband wrote Marshall a signed letter asking them to change the false documentation and false quotes they attributed to him in my records, but they wouldn't. El Dorado County Behavioral Health ended up correcting their false documentation in my records. But it wasn't without a fight, and it wasn't without severe damage to my marriage and my mental health. I even showed Marshall that El Dorado corrected my records. Filed 3 separate complaints about my medical records being erroneous and inaccurate, but they don't care. Now I have false diagnoses in my medical records, which are legal documents. In 2016, Marshall agreed to pay $5.5 million to settle allegations that it defrauded Medicare and Medi-Cal in billing. They were double-billing and practicing fraudulent documentation. Well, it seems that they are now trying to use psychiatric diagnostic codes in order to get reimbursed more money, since they can't get away with double-billing Medicare and Medi-Cal anymore. Psychiatric patients (and non-psychiatric patients) who are mistaken for substance abusers or psychiatric patients at Marshall are in real danger of losing their civil rights here and I don't say that lightly. I'm absolutely disgusted with this place and will never go there again. I was so upset about my experience at Marshall, I ended up creating an advanced directive just to have in writing that I am never to be brought to Marshall under any circumstances.

With her decline in physical and mental capabilities and being on Medicare, we admitted her to The Pines in Placerville. Overall, our experience with them has no complaints. Initially, she wasn't very happy to be there because of the differences compared to her private room at the hospital. However, I cannot fault The Pines for that, especially with how the staff treated her and our family. I have worked in a couple dozen nursing homes of various skill and funding levels; all over California and a few in Nevada. I knew what to expect from a place that we weren't paying thousands of dollars a month out of pocket for. I too, was nervous the first night she was transferred there. It can be loud; and there's alot of activity and my mom felt at times she wasn't receiving "service" as promptly as she would've liked. With that said, I very quickly began to know the staff personally and they were all friendly, professional and accommodating. It's very busy there-there is alot of residents and patients who were more worse off in ways than my mother and were far more demanding and not nice about it. The stress on the staff is alot. Yet, overall they handle it like pros. My mother was there just under two weeks before she unfortunately had to go back to the hospital and will probably not leave it alive. While she cannot personally express her feelings about The Pines, I spent everyday there, many times for most of the day and at all different times so I can speak from first hand experience: I know the reviews from others and the reputation this place has. The Director, Colby, you can tell is working very hard to turn that reputation around. The staff works very hard and I pray for their continued strength and determination in what they are doing because it is not an easy job and at times-maybe many times-seems thankless and unrewarding. Just know that for this family, you took an already difficult and emotional period of our lives and were able to ease this portion and truly give help when it was desperately needed. Special shout outs to Amy, Mikala, Colleen, Mai, Abraham, Maura, Michelle, Kelsey, Britni, Bill, Christina, Stephen, Samantha and so many more there that I can't remember your name or didn't catch it when we met: I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you did for my mother. If she was capable of it, I know she would personally express how thankful and appreciative she was for your care, concern and dignity during this very difficult time of her life.

Residents who complain of pain are told they are "faking" it or just attention-seeking. One supervisor and several "caregivers" stated their belief that one resident, newly admitted, didn't actually have Alzheimer's, but was just pretending to have it. They screamed at her regularly, to the point where you could hear the yelling (by the staff) from the other end of the building. If you have to admit your loved one into memory care here, I strongly recommend putting cameras in the room. Or better yet, just don't do it. Find somewhere else. Anywhere. The residents are treated like obstacles that have to be avoided while collecting paychecks.
