Gaucho Plate - picanha & fraldinha
    Angelica L.

Rating: 3.8/5 [takeout] We were looking for a late-night dinner and this food truck stood out as the best option. We ordered the Gaucho Plate - picanha & fraldinha ($23), which included sirloin cap, flap cut, rice, French fries, and an orange sauce. The portion was generous and easily enough to share between two people.

They've got a truck setup at Ani's Day & Night. The food is pretty decent. Literally the biggest empanadas I've ever seen in my life! The empanadas are cooked to a nice golden crisp and the beef/cheese combo seasoning is top-notch. My friend and I shared an empanadas/fries basket and we were so full! My boyfriend got the Picanha sandwich and I had a bite (ok several bites, truth be told) and it was fantastic! It's their version of a Philly Cheeseteak, which face it, anywhere you go outside of Philly, it's a version for sure. I would instead call this a super yummy steak sandwich. The meat was wonderfully tender and melted in my mouth. The roll was the proper consistency to be able to hold the meat and toppings without sogginess. There's a reason that sandwich is their best seller.

got the picana sandwich which was good! serving size was huge and had a good amount of meat. the guys working at the truck were chill and funny, hooked us up with extra fries. would prob taste better if you were smashed

Tldr: great food, but pricey I ordered the Picanha sandwich which is one of their top sellers. I ended up paying more than what's listed on their truck plus a random convenience fee for credit card which I wasn't aware of. The food itself was delicious, especially the fries which were fresh and crispy. I would've liked more protein in the sandwich since I paid almost $14 for everything. Overall, convenient location for students that offers good food.

Not really worth the $22 I paid for one plate. I got steak, but the majority of it was literally just fat. It was so chewy that I had to spit a ton of it out after trying to chew it because it was just so fatty and chewy. I also asked for medium rare and my steak was more well done. The fries were really good though and the salad was just normal. The rice was decent too, but honestly was just disappointed with the steak because I was craving it for a while.

I love the food that I had. The service was amazing, very fresh and the flavor it was very good! The ambience is very nice and clean. Good place to go with a family.

I've always liked watching YouTube videos about Brazilian food, especially Picanha. Naturally, when I saw that this was available in such close proximity to me, I had to stop. My eyes widened as I saw the magical word on this bright red food truck. My dream had finally come true. I chatted with the owner about all things Brazil for a few minutes, and he took time out to really educate me on his culture. He told me that I should order the Picanha, so I did. What I really liked about this place is that everything was made fresh to order. He was upfront about the short waiting time, and insisted upon the quality of his food. So I waited... And I was rewarded. The fries were amazing. The outside had a crisp, glass-like exterior, while the inside remained fluffy and soft. The seasoning was spectacular, and had a unique spice blend that set off fireworks in my palette. The Picanha was pretty good, even though it was cut off into thin strips and covered with sauce, which makes it more difficult to appreciate the natural steaky-ness of the meat. Overall, I had a very satisfying experience. The food was tasty, and the owner was very pleasant. 4/5 stars.

a plate of steak and french fries

Had the gaucho plate and exceeded expectations! Quality meat with an abundance of sides. The perfect medium steak complicated with incredibly seasoned fries, a salad, all on a bed of rice! A great bang for your buck. Will come again! Enough food to share and to save for later.

I was invited back by the owners and they remade the dishes. Absolutely delicious and the way it was intended to be. Give them a try and you'll be pleased. Make sure to say medium rare so there is zero confusion by whatever is cooking the food. I was very excited to try this place and I am sad to say it did not live up to the hype. I first saw this truck at the Light Fest but they were just closing! Since that moment I was craving Picahna and like anyone that loves Brazilian BBQ knows the best cut is the Picahna. Look at the website and you are greeted by freshly grilled sirloin and a juicy/sizzling cut. I ordered and paid through Google Pickup and expected that the order was ready at the specified time. When we showed up, the man working said they don't make food until the patron is there. This makes sense if I didn't pay to prevent waste... but considering I paid already, this seemed silly. Since I thought I would be in and out I parked on the street and was greeted by a parking ticket on the way back. I don't blame the parking ticket on this place.. it just made the whole experience worse considering the whole situation. Look at the pick up time and the ticket time :(. When I got the food, the Picanha was overcooked and dry. Everything was WAY too salty. Would not come back and very disappointed. Again - the parking ticket is my fault for not paying (i thought I'd be in & out) - but the food dry and overly salted along with the food not available at the pickup time provided... that's on the place.

And the place is a time machine, rolling back the decades. Little has changed here in the past three quarters of a century, which makes it very charming. At the coffee bar, I had a cortado (Spain's take on a cappuccino -- equal parts espresso and steamed milk) along with a little chocolate truffle. We also picked up some Opa Klein's amazing summer sausage and a six pack of Stash IPA to go. We're coffee snobs. We'll be back for the best cuppa joe in town, at a minimum. Special thanks to Mike K (one of Tracy's baristas) for telling us about this place as he serenaded us during brunch at downtown restaurant. He's a very talented guy, and very proud to be associated with this quaint and historic Bastrop fixture. You know you're doing something right as a business owner when your staff naturally delivers your best and most effective marketing, just from the sheer enthusiasm and pride of working there. So, yeah, it's a tiny little time warp, but it's well run and worth coming to, especially if you're into great coffee.

Even more than that, the staff is amazing. Each person was so kind and personable - made our day and felt like "home" (we are visiting from out of town). They even put up with my twin three-year-olds who were unwinding for lack of a nap today, and they made a bit of a mess on the way out. When we went to tidy things up, instead of eye rolls or frustration (which would be understandable) one of the managers gave us some fresh salsa to take home and try. Talk about understanding and kind - these people care, and it showed in each aspect of our visit today. We will be back for sure (but maybe leave the twins with a sitter next time;-). During that time, Coffee Dog was reliable, welcoming, and worth recommending. Unfortunately, under new ownership, that is no longer the case. This morning was the final straw. I placed my order and waited over 30 minutes, only to receive absolutely nothing. After my order was taken, I reasonably assumed it was being prepared. Instead, a different employee later came to the window and asked what I had ordered as if no record or communication existed at all. At that point, I asked for a refund. What followed was a frustrating and unnecessary ordeal. The so-called manager came to the window and began explaining how long a sandwich takes to make despite the fact that I did not order a sandwich. The manager clearly did not understand the situation, continued wasting my time, and failed to listen after I had already made it clear that I just wanted a refund since my order was never made. Even processing the refund became a struggle. This is not an isolated incident. On several prior visits, they've been under-supplied, out of basic items, or dealing with non-functioning machines issues that are frankly unacceptable for a business that calls itself a coffee shop. The lack of organization and accountability is astounding. One of our clients regularly purchased gift cards from Coffee Dog for us, but after this experience, I will be telling him not to return. Mr. Hodges, save your money this place is no longer worth it. It's incredibly sad to see how far this business has fallen. I supported Coffee Dog for the longest time, but I am officially done. I will not be returning, and I will not be recommending this place to anyone. Future customers should be aware: this business is not the same under new ownership.
