Brisket on the cutting board
James T.

This was a great place to stop on my way out west. I have driven by several times. From now on I gonna stop in. The brisket was great sides were too. They have a pickle and onion bar by the drinks. The staff was very helpful to a first time visitor. And the restaurant was very clean with clean bathrooms. They also had a private room for events.

One of the best bbq places in Texas. We always stop there when we are in town. Delicious brisket, slammers, potato salad and slaw.

Refrigerate after opening???

way overpriced and filthy! How many years had that bbq sauce been fermenting in the hot sun of the windows??? see pic. Employees have a ride attitude if you ask for a special cut such as the toe end or bark. Sides are blah blah and way overpriced. 7.50 for a bowl of nasty bea

2 meat plate brisket and chicken, beans, potato salad

This restaurant has a drive-thru, very helpful service when ordering. And willing to answer any questions. We decided on a couple 2 meat plates with choice of two sides. It was a Saturday before Mother's Day but there was no line in the drive thru and the food came out hot and fresh but not dry! Great smoky flavor. Already looking forward to our next visit!

Loved my plate of brisket, fine shred cole slaw, and delicious green beans! Excellent bbq and great service in a fun setting. Started the Texas visit off on the right foot for sure!

Southside Market & BBQ is a traditional Texas barbecue place where you can either order prepared food or take home to cook. The menu selections are plenty and will find something to your liking. I ordered the Turkey plate and with Mac & Cheese and Potato Salad. It was a large portion of food so prepare to take the rest home. I also tasted pork ribs off my wife's plate and they were delicious. I enjoyed the turkey where it had great flavor and soft enough to cut with a fork. The Mac & Cheese and Potato Salad had great flavor. The sweet tea was good too. They were fully staffed from the meat cutters to the cleaning crew. The place was very clean and the staff was very friendly.

Two meat plate is usually the way to go. Food is always fresh. Only side I like is side salad lol Other sides don't have the seasoning I like but that's my opinion. Place was being cleaned as customers would leave. Lots of natural light with the windows. Always hit up Southside every time I come to Austin.

Sausage slammer and coleslaw

Good honest food at a fair price. Consistently good, not as pricey as other restaurants. Little to no wait, always quiet & super clean, plenty of room, no tipping expected. Self-serve pickles, jalapeños, onion. Sausage jalapeño cheese bombs and pork steaks are filling. They never have lamb ribs when I'm there, but I hope to try that one day. Service has always been patient and polite.

Baby Back ribs super tender and very meaty!! Pulled pork very tasty and moist. Need a better BBQ sauce to compliment the delicious meat. The stuffed sausage was tender moist and delicious too!

The best thing on the menu is their fatty brisket; so good, so juicy and flavorful! Mac and cheese is lacking, my 5 year old had to ask for salt to shake on it because she said it didn't have any taste :/ Husband said his ribs were dry, both baby back and spare. They were out of lamb ribs so we ended up getting baby back ribs. The family meals are a pretty great deal for the amount of food you get. Husband loved the beans! Service was a tiny bit slow, even with more than 5 employees behind one counter and another employee behind the meat counter for desserts and to weigh steaks... Spent almost $200 here yesterday but would say it was all worth it

Banana pudding

This was my first time at Southside Market. The staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant was clean and well maintained. The foodwas really good we got the 3 meat plate, loved the bold barbecue sauce. The banana pudding was the perfect dessert.

Yum!

Best Mexican Super in the entire city of Bastrop!…read more But did you know they have great breakfast tacos? And they're generous with the portions. Look at the amount of bacon I discovered when I got home, took my taco out of the foil and plated it :-) I order my tacos there without cheese, because the cheese they use tastes too much like Velvita to me. But they otherwise do a great job. I love their migas and they always have several fresh salsas to choose from. They also have Pupusas with Curtido! If you don't know what that is, you're missing out! It's the best and most iconic of all El Salvadoran dishes, and it's got a flavor profile that should be loved by anyone who likes Mexican food. Of course, it's not just a restaurant. It's a grocery store. They have meat and fresh produce and narrow but well-stocked aisles. The prices are good. The staff is friendly, and they speak English as well as Spanish. And being there is a bit like stepping into Old Mexico. So swing in by. They're over by Chapala.

What a shame this place hasn't been reviewed yet!…read more I've been taking my pigs here for processing for a year now, after a really unsettling experience at another local slaughterhouse. Smithville is such a breath of fresh air! Cliff the manager, and Joe on the kill floor, are always so courteous and make me feel like they really value me as a customer, and more importantly I feel like my hogs are in good hands when I drop them off. I had once instance of bloodspotting on my meat, and before I could even notice it, Joe ran out to my truck when I was loading up and let me know about it, and how the hog just wouldn't calm down that day. I cannot begin to describe how much it means to me when an issue like this is brought up immediately and honestly. They always do a great job being patient and understanding what cuts I need for my customers. The answer is always "yes" if I ask "can I get my meat cut this way?" And trust me, I really push the envelop with this one, haha. If there's every a problem, I know I can bring it up to them and they will do what they can to address it. Cliff is also excellent at explaining regulations, which can be daunting for people getting into the meat business. He will also help you to set up a private label. As far as butchering goes - when I get a kill and chill, their splits are pretty good and consistent. Their sausage is good - and simple. And they are inspected, so you can get your meat cut for retail and they do a good job making it look presentable. They deserve your business.

And the place is a time machine, rolling back the decades. Little has changed here in the past three quarters of a century, which makes it very charming. They have farm-fresh eggs, locally-grown salad greens, sausage, cheese, breakfast tacos, baked-from-scratch pop tarts, Texas pretzel bread and other items in this small store, without feeling crowded. At the coffee bar, I had a cortado (Spain's take on a cappuccino -- equal parts espresso and steamed milk) along with a little chocolate truffle. We also picked up some Opa Klein's amazing summer sausage and a six pack of Stash IPA to go. We're coffee snobs. We'll be back for the best cuppa joe in town, at a minimum. Special thanks to Mike K (one of Tracy's baristas) for telling us about this place as he serenaded us during brunch at downtown restaurant. He's a very talented guy, and very proud to be associated with this quaint and historic Bastrop fixture. You know you're doing something right as a business owner when your staff naturally delivers your best and most effective marketing, just from the sheer enthusiasm and pride of working there. So, yeah, it's a tiny little time warp, but it's well run and worth coming to, especially if you're into great coffee.

The article said "call first!" - so I did, and talked to super-friendly owner Bill McCranie. He gave me the lowdown on how the blueberry crop looked, when would be the best time to come, and specific directions. On a beautiful June morning, we packed up the kids and headed out. It took less than an hour to get there from Central Austin, mostly along 290, about 15 miles past Elgin. After getting through the cattle gate, we were greeted by a big group of very friendly dogs (our kids were a bit afraid at first, but warmed up quickly). Bill came to meet us, gave us buckets and some good advice (don't touch the electrified fence wire, don't worry about the cows - they are friendly, watch for fire ants, etc.) and we got to work. There were TONS of berries the morning we were there, and the kids were thrilled. We ended up getting about $50 in blueberries (at $7 a pint) - as fresh as they come and totally organic. There is nothing like eating a just-picked blueberry right off the bush, still warm from the sun. It was a great outing, and a great way to support a sustainable, earth-friendly business. The posting by Hoa N. covers pretty much what you will need to bring, so I won't repeat it here, except to re-emphasize the "closed-toed shoes" advice. Bill would prefer you call first before heading out so that he can let you know if someone will be there to let you in. He'll also let you know if there is enough fruit out to make the trip worthwhile, and provide very specific directions. The farm isn't marked with any signage, so follow Bill's instructions carefully. Bill, spouse Nancy and family have great plans for their farm - they plan to add fishing and other activities as time and effort permits. We'll be going out there again for sure as they grow.

Nothing beats picking fresh blueberries off the tree and eating as you go along. The property is beautiful and an overall great place to take the kids for a weekend out in nature.
