I came to Ess & Bentch straight from the subway to kill a bit of time before an appointment in the neighborhood. I had been craving some falafel and luckily enough, the falafel here is damn good. The service is a bit brusque, but they fried up the falafel fresh. It was $5 for falafel in a pita. I opted for falafel in a laffa for $10, which was more expensive, but was also the size of two and half sandwiches in one. I had lots of leftovers. For that price, you also get to load up your sandwich with as many toppings as you'd like. None of this, choose 2 standard toppings and 1 sauce. No. Get everything. I gladly loaded up my falafel with Israeli salad, hummus, a little schug for spice, cabbage, tahini, baba ganouj, and pickles. Sounds like a weird combination, especially with the pickles, but it all worked beautifully together. The freshly fried falafel (say that five times fast) was crisp and lovely. Perfect falafel texture. The baba ganouj was out of this world too, garlicky and delightful. This place's falafel is amazing. I go there for falafel all the time. You can get a falafel and soda for $7.08.The falafel is so fresh. And it comes with israeli salad, french fries, hummus, tahini, eggplant, carrots, onions, cabbage, pickles, spicy, and other toppings. It is amazing and soooo delicious. And the staff is so friendly and always smiling. And one of the best things about this place is when beggars come in this restaurant (as they do in all Crown Heights restaurants and bother customers) unlike the other restaurants the staff at Ess and Bentch chases them out so they don't bother customers. Don't be turned off because the place looks small. You can usually get a seat. The food is incredible. read more

Second time I come here and their main issue is customer service and consistency. First time I came they pretty much ignored me every time I asked for a topping in my sandwich and had to constantly repeat what I wanted in it. Today I showed up at 1215pm... their store opens at 1130... I walk in the door is open and one guy behind the counter and he brushes me off saying "closed" and I asked when will they be open and he's like "I don't know." Came here very late at night and they were surprisingly up and running. We got the chicken wings and they were probably one of the best wings I have had in Brooklyn so far. When the wings touched our table they were still hot. The sauce was really good and the people at the counter were friendly. They also gave us a falafel ball to try and even tough, my husband and I are not into falafel much, we liked how crispy and tasty this one was. This is not the type of place to come for a romantic date but definitely give it a try whenever you are not in the mood of cooking or just want a quick-filling bite. read more

Interesting to see a modern shop on Kingston Ave, Crown Heights. The set-up is supposed to be fast casual, and while not incredibly fast, everything was super fresh and prepared at the counter. The manager was nice and the food was tasty as anything. I would definitely come back. For me, an outsider to the community, it was fun to step in there for a bit and be with the Orthodoxy. Ess & Bentch where do I start? It's a spot fairly new to me even though I pass it all the time. I've just started stopping there sometimes after I finish my route (Mailman) or for lunch I like this place a lot. I usually get the baby chicken in pita bread with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and unions and a orange soda. I like this place so much that I've told my coworkers about it. Even bought sandwiches to bring back to them, but unfortunately I will not be returning to this spot after my latest experience. I went in there today to order my usual which I did and noticed the guy that made my sandwich wearing one glove on his right hand. The phone rang he picked up the phone with the gloved hand and in the other hand without a glove is sitting my sandwich so I ask him "do you expect me to eat a sandwich that was sitting in your bare hands?" His reply was "what?" several times after me repeating the question. He then asked would I like a new sandwich I said "please!" He walked from behind the counter went outside to tell his other coworker friends. Two other guys "one glove guy" didn't return, one of the two guys went behind the counter putting on both gloves and asked what I want I told him. He looks at the tainted sandwich left behind and said "ok that's it right there" I explained to him what happened and I was getting a look as if I was in the wrong which pissed me off. He asked me would I like a another sandwich I said yes I went to sit down and as I was playing every thing back in my head it hit me that they think or thought it was ok for this guy to touch sandwiches with his bare hands and expect ppl to eat it, so I stood up and told the guy at the counter cancel it i don't want anything I put my canned soda back and left. I know this was kinda long but felt it was needed cause I want to know if I was wrong and blew it out of proportion or they are still places that practice preparing food for costumers with proper clean techniques. Terrible experience with delivery where deliverer was obnoxious and took forever, orders6 dishes none were edible. However! Order in person and it's a solid three stars, they are a bit cheap on the proteins and don't know how to wrap a wrap but the ingredients are good.
