It was 3 of us, including my 8-year-old son, and the conditions couldn't have been better--just a little snow, some mud, and plenty of opportunities for big splashes (which my son absolutely loved). We did a 5-hour rental, which felt like the perfect amount of time to explore without feeling rushed. The equipment was in great shape, and even the truck used to haul the ATV and trailer to the trailhead was well-maintained--everything felt professional and dialed in. The team really made the experience stand out. Everyone we interacted with was fantastic, and Andrew in particular was a superstar--he handled both checkout and check-in, made everything easy, and clearly cares about making sure customers have a great time. We'll definitely be back, especially to experience the trails in full snow. Highly recommend all around.

We chose the Blue Sky Mountain…read moreSummit Tour (fka Mount Evans) which is one of 58 14'ers (that's what they call mountains over 14,000 feet) in Colorado. The tour is a full day, leaving around 8 am from Union Station and arriving back around 430 pm in the afternoon. The tour van is quite comfortable and has three rows of seating in addition to a front passenger seat. I would say that the level of difficulty of the walking portion of the tour is not high, but the summit trail does require a bit of stamina and the air is a bit thinner up there, so you may be unaccustomed to it (more about this below). The other trails at Summit Lake (at 12, 800 ft) and Mount Goliath Natural Area are pretty flat (there are steps down to the lake). After leaving Denver city proper for the mountains, the tour stops for about 30-45 minutes at Mount Goliath visitor station, which has a small visitor center and a roundabout mini trail. What's truly amazing are the extremely old Bristlecone Pine trees, both living and beautifully sculpted old trunks (apparently some are 1500 years old). The trail is right on the tree line where the trees begin to dissipate, apparently because of the extreme winds that befall the mountain sides. Along the way is a very beautiful alpine lake (I can't recall the name). The tour stops for a few minutes (and there's a restroom). Next, the tour van proceeds rather gingerly up a (what some would call harrowing) two lane "paved" road claimed to be the highest in North America. Now, this road starts off all fine and well but proceeds to get more windy and twisty and the shoulders all but disappear with rather large drops just to the side. But we didn't fear, or closed our eyes if needed, because our driver, Emily, was at the wheel and expertly navigated the road, while providing very interesting facts and history along the way. Finally, we reached the summit of Mount Blue Sky. There's a parking lot and a final walking path that winds up to the peak of the mountain, 14,264 feet in elevation. The path is not difficult and there are no steep parts, but there are loose rocks and narrow portions. I did notice that some people had a bit of difficulty with it, but for most, it was very doable. In fact, a cane would be kind of fun to have with you. Once you get to the peak, it's for many a once in a lifetime experience. I mean how many people get to stand on a mountain this high? Luckily, it was a gorgeous day, and the temp was low 60s (it was upper 80s in downtown Denver) and clear enough to see the Denver skyline way, way off in the distance with binoculars. Our guide kept warning us that storms can form suddenly and to be on the lookout. Also, the temp drops quite a bit, so bring something warm, depending on the time of year. There is also wildlife along the tour and I gather that it depends on the day what you'll see. We caught amazing close up views of white-coated mountain goats, adults and cute little ones. In fact, I almost thought one of them would come up to the open door of the van. We didn't see any big horn sheep, but we did spot many marmots, which look like a mountain cousins of the beaver. The last stop was for a late lunch in Idaho Springs, which boasts itself as an old, scenic mining town. There were a few decent places for lunch along a strip closed off for walking, and stores for browsing. Also, there's a museum at one end of the downtown but there was not enough time to visit. The ride back from Idaho Springs was about an hour, leaving you back at Union Station. All in all, the Colorado Sightseer Blue Sky Mountain Summit Tour was amazing! Our tour guide Emily was fantastic, providing a lot of information along the way (including about her life), and a skilled van driver (she had available extra water, snacks, and jackets). I highly recommend the tour for a full day adventure!

This historic road opened in 1920 and takes you from the Fall River Entrance Station to the Alpine Visitor Center. It is a one-way trip on a 11-mile dirt road at over 11,000 feet above sea level. It is only open during the summer season. Even though most visitors in the park take Trail Ridge Road, I wanted to drive this road to see Chasm Falls. Chasm Falls is a 25-foot waterfall that is located at the halfway point of the drive. I took my time driving on this road because of the switchbacks and how narrow it is. Plus there are no guard rails on this road. Majority of your drive-time will be elevation climb. Because the road is so high above sea level, you get great close-up views of the mountain ranges all around. I finally reached Alpine Visitor Center and had a fun time exploring that area. Even though this drive requires patience, I recommend experiencing it if it is open.

The begin is pave two way traffic. When you see the unpaved road, there is when the one way to the top is begin. It was a great drive. The first point of interest is the Alluvial Fan. I would suggest parking at the West Alluvial Fan trailhead. From there to Alluvial Fan is gradually increasing in elevation. Better walking trail. The the second of point of interest is the Chasm Fall. It just a 0.1 miles from parking lot. Very easy downward stair access. The third points of interest is Chapin Creek trail. This just an ok trail. The last attraction is the Alpine Visitor Center. From here the restroom is available. Also has an Alpine Ridge Trail to the high point. This drive is a scenic drive. Very beautiful on the way. You can spot beautiful rocks, valleys, falls, and ridge. The entire trip take 2 hours.
