We rented a 4-seater ATV from Backbone Adventures and had an incredible day out on the Switzerland Trail. It was 3 of us, including my 8-year-old son, and the conditions couldn't have been better--just a little snow, some mud, and plenty of opportunities for big splashes (which my son absolutely loved). We did a 5-hour rental, which felt like the perfect amount of time to explore without feeling rushed. The equipment was in great shape, and even the truck used to haul the ATV and trailer to the trailhead was well-maintained--everything felt professional and dialed in. The team really made the experience stand out. Everyone we interacted with was fantastic, and Andrew in particular was a superstar--he handled both checkout and check-in, made everything easy, and clearly cares about making sure customers have a great time. My husband really wanted to go side by side riding while on vacation so we chose Backbone Adventures because it had excellent reviews. The customer service here is excellent. Everyone working here was friendly, informative, knowledgeable, and provided excellent recommendations for what trail to choose. They suggested we log in to CoTrex so we had access to the off road trail, which was very helpful. They also had us scan a QR code with directions to the trail, which made the whole process very seamless. We got a side by side for 3 hours and went to Pole Hill. It was a lot of fun. The trails were great and it also had amazing views! We also saw a fox on the trail. We had a really great experience with Backbone Adventures. The day started at their store front where we did all the waivers and got the safety helmets and gear. I really appreciate that they ask people to know their limits and put safety first at all times. It's a good mix of making sure their customers know what they're getting into, but still ensuring you have a responsibly great time without being a downer. We rented a hal-f-day side-by-side ATV and did Johnny Park. We've had experience ATVing before recreationally in Northern Michigan but also in the mountains of Jaco, Costa Rica. This was a great experience set in Colorado. As one of the "easier' trails, it was still fun and exciting with some difficult parts. For our first forray into ATV off-roading in Colorado, it seemed like a good intro to the type of the terrain. Great service and in a great location in Estes Park. We rented e-bikes and had a blast. They gave us free ice cream afterwards.

We ended up with an extra day and we found this opportunity to rent aJeep for the day. First, $399 for a well outfitted Jeep, with the full intention that you would be off-roading with it is a pretty good value. They had a couple insurance options and weren't adamant about buying them, either. I chose the damage waiver ($30) but not the tire waiver ($25). But that was pretty much it, except for sales tax. Sometimes you rent stuff and it's $399, but by the time you add all the required stuff it virtually doubles. Anyway, we got the Jeep from 9-5, and they recommended arriving at 8:30 so we could get the most of our day. Check in was polite, thorough and not rushed, and we were still on the road at 9:00, with great trail recommendations based on our trail style goals. We had a great time, with a very capable Jeep and definitely saw part of the Rockies that you WON'T see driving through the National Park. read more

I had high hopes for my ATV adventure in the Colorado while visiting my mother, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a terrible experience. Key points Lack of helmets, They provided helmets, but there weren't enough for everyone, so we had to use wet helmets from previous riders. This is quite disgusting and unsanitary. ATV breakdown, We rented two ATVs, the ride started off well, my mother's ATV suddenly broke down, with loss of steering. Thankfully, it happened at low speeds and on a straight path. As a result, we had to use the working ATV to transport our group back to the car, leaving the other two members of our group stranded in the cold woods. Inconvenience and time wasted, The breakdown cut our ride short by a couple hours, as we had to use the working ATV for transportation back to the car. It took us 30 minutes each way, covering 8 miles, to get back to the car. We didn't stop for dinner or food and went straight to the shop. Poor customer service, When I returned the ATV, nobody was present at the shop. I followed the instructions on the sign, left the keys in the car, and left. Later that night, Bonnie from BBA , called me at 10 pm on Sunday to discuss damages on the other ATV. She only mentioned a loose door and wanted to charge me the 1500 insurance deductible for it. This was highly inconvenient and unprofessional. Maintenance issues, The company's maintenance standards were lacking. When we picked up the ATVs at 2 pm, one of them was covered in mud, unwashed and had damages . However, when they pressure-washed it at 10 pm on a Sunday night, give me a break, it wasn't even cleaned after the previous group , they suddenly found damages. It is unrealistic to expect an ATV after driving over 50 miles in the rocky mountains to not have some wear and tear, it's rocky, it is going to be bumpy, things are going to get loose. This should be expected from off road vehicle. The door was still functional and in good condition and simply needed to be tightened. Lack of apology or compensation, The Bonnie never apologized for the inconvenience caused by the breakdown or offered any solutions, discounts, or refunds. Despite giving us a faulty ATV, she chose to charge me for supposed damages to the other ATV. This felt like a scam tactic. Edit She refunded my mother 100. Unreasonable repair charge, Bonnie claimed the loose door would cost 1500 to repair, but she provided no evidence or receipt for the repair. It was an unauthorized transaction with an inflated repair price. Edit The rep emailed me an in house invoice with much more damages than discussed previously and again provided no evidence or receipt. The damages she listed were replacement parts that did not need to be replaced. Example A new roof. Unprofessionalism and poor maintenance, This experience highlighted the unprofessionalism and poor maintenance standards at Backbone Adventures. Wet helmets, dirty ATVs, mechanical failures, and loose parts were recurring issues. Attached to this review is a picture showing how clean one of our group members is while the passenger seat is completely filthy, which confirms that the ATV was given to us covered in mud. The ATV also had damage to the roof, which shows they do not replace parts, but will charge you for it. I was willing to accept the poor experience and the financial loss, but attempting to charge an additional 1500 for damages for a loose door and nonexistent repairs is unacceptable. Instead of rectifying the situation caused by their faulty ATV, I received no refunds or discounts, only a late-night call about the supposed damages. read more

This place is the real deal!! I only found 2 ATV rental places in the Estes Park area and this one is the cheaper of the 2. I rented from them in the past and they were cheaper at that time as well. On this trip I rented 3 ATVs that seat 4 people, and 1 ATV that seats 2 people; there were 14 people in my group. We reserved them for the 1/2 day. I booked them about a week ahead of time over the phone. They also have motorcycles and Jeeps to rent. I wouldn't recommend the single seat ATV (quad), because your body will take a beating after riding it on the rough terrain for several hours. Plus the people I spoke to about the single seats were very sore afterwards and tired from riding all day. THE OFFICE: You should show up about 1 hour before your ride time starts at the shop office in Estes Park. This is where you'll get a helmet and fill out the liability paperwork. Then they give you very detailed instructions on how to get to the ATV/trail start location. The drive to the actual ATVs is about 30 minutes. They also give a map so you don't get lost. I would recommend showing up to complete the paperwork early because if you are running behind that will cut into your riding time. START POINT: Here is where they keep all the ATVs. When you arrive to the trail start point you get another 5-10 speech about the specifics of the ATV you'll be riding, then you buckle up and start riding. 1/2 day was plenty of time to be on the ATVs, but you can definitely make an entire day out of seeing all the trails, stopping to eat lunch, going to the lookout locations, and shooting at the firearms site they have. CONS: I did see several people with blown out tires, or a broken axle. Blowing a tire is no issue and shouldn't cost you anything; not sure if that's the same for the broken axle I saw. Another downside to a maintenance issue is that you are eating into your ride time while someone comes out to re-place your tire, or send you a new ATV all together. I was fortunate not to have any maintenance issues while I was riding. Honestly, I was riding mine like I stole it, and was pretty rough with it; still didn't have any issues. PRO TIP: 5% military discount, 10% discount for renting with them more than once. I got a total of 15% off my entire bill!!! read more

Found Backbone Adventures while searching for activities near Cheyenne. Was excited to see that not only do you get to rent a UTV but that it was also unguided. Allowing us to venture out at our own pace. Rates were very fair and the vehicles were in great working order. Store front was on the main road in Estes Park. They had a great selection of Jeeps that we might take advantage of on a future trip. For this trip we rented a 2 seater Polaris for my wife and I, it was perfect. When we got to the store it's a good 30 minutes to the base camp. Once there they are kind enough to walkthrough where to go, what's ideal for us and their maps were great. Provided trials, hiking spots to consider and lookout spots. Only downside was that we didn't have a roof cover so when it started pouring we were drenched unlike some of our fellow renters. All and all, highly recommend for anyone wanting to venture out. read more

We took out the UTV's out and I have to say Backbone Adventures made for one enjoyable day. The staff and owner are really helpful getting signed up and felt very comfortable with the equipment which is basically brand new. This was our second ride at backbone and this time the razors were even nicer with gps, stereos w Bluetooth and an amazing suspension system. We did a half day ride again which was perfect for a December ride with unusually warm temps. The Lower trails are closed do to snow and drifts which wouldn't allow us to get the crash site. But there is plenty to see and despite snow and ice these machine eat it up. We did rent 3 machines 2 x 2 people razors and then 1x 4 persons machine. All were great. I was a bit unhappy to have found i was told we bent one of the front A suspension arms and was charged $250 for that despite the insurance which covers the entire machine with a $2000 deductibles so needless to say this was not part of the issue we were accused of. I do trust these folks but we honestly have no idea how this happened. Aside from the end of the day downer we have really enjoyed our time our on the trails. It's a great time if your looking to get lost out in the Rockys. From what I spoke to the owner about the summer time is supposed to be a wonderful time with much more trails available to check out as of July through fall. I would defiantly want ton give that a try next visit. As a tip- returning customers do get a discount... so if your coming back be sure to call to get a 10% discount. read more

Backbone Adventures provided a safety-minded, adventurous experience on some crazy terrain in the Rocky Mountains that was well-serviced by knowledgeable and helpful staff both inside the storefront and out on the range. We've ridden ATVs both in Texas and Mexico. But, we were unprepared for the roughness of the roads on the track provided by Backbone Adventures. Luckily, the staff was prepared for this and helped us to change vehicles so we could enjoy the 3 hour rental. Backbone's store is located on the outskirts of Estes Park. We were told to go there first, one hour before the start of our self-guided riding experience to sign forms and be outfitted with a helmet and other optional gear. The drive from the store to the riding area was roughly 30 minutes, most of which had no cell service. We found the Bunce School trails area easily enough. After parking, Chris and Daniel helped prep us to drive the ATVs on the several miles of private roads. During the short educational speech, he mentioned that in his years of dirt biking, the ATV was the most difficult to drive in this area. We found that after about 20 minutes of feeling like we were on the edge of rolling them in the rocky and steep roads, we wanted to change to something else. Upon driving back to base camp, Chris was very helpful and easy going about moving us to a two-seater Polaris RZR with blue tooth music and a GPS screen. This vehicle was better suited to the roads, allowing us to drive at the 20 MPH speed limit without concern for liability and enjoy the bouncy, up and downs of it. High marks for service, safety, and experience. If you've driven ATVs only on smooth roads in the past, I can guarantee that you will want to make sure you're prepared for the unevenness of the Bunce School roads. A range of rentals are available to accommodate groups of many sizes, all the way up to large Jeeps. The view from the trail is pretty, though not the nicest we saw by far. At one end is a short hike to a lake that we could not find, but enjoyed the walk anyway. I highly recommend the experience with the expectation that the roads are mostly mid-level to difficult. read more

I decided last minute to take vacation to CO with my daughter from NJ to visit family. My typical vacations include blue water, flip flops, and bathing suits. Coming to CO I traded that for boots and mountains and renting some ATVs. We have side by sides and ATVs at home but much different terrain. After some google searches and reading reviews, I settled on Backbone Adventures. The fact that this is a family owned business was a definite plus! During this pandemic we can all use the business. We did an all day 9-3 rental. Check in at the office was smooth and easy. They provided a detailed map to drive to the area to pick up the machines. Definitely check out the map because you will lose cell phone service. We then drove to the area where you pick up the rentals which took about 25-30 minutes. After driving up the dirt road area, I was immediately greeted by staff and shown where to park. We had an orientation with Bo and explanation of the trails which ranged from, easy, moderate, and gnarly. Bo pointed out a large rock formation nearby that he said was similar to the gnarly sections on the map. At that point with a quad, I knew that wasn't the right areas for us! In a side by side, yes, not a quad! Any questions I asked, Bo was able to answer and was very very straight forward. My daughter and I did venture some of the intermediate areas but then decided we had more fun on the easy sections and did those several times! Yes, we missed the map highlighted sights, but there are some seriously great views and picture perfect areas with a like hike or walk. Upon return, the staff was there and waiting. They are the most sweetest, kindest people I had the opportunity to meet and talk to! I felt it was very well organized from check in to pick up and return! Social distancing is a given, you're in the middle of nowhere on a mountain with fresh air, a little rain (cooled me off) and fabulous views and awesome terrain and trails! Pack some water, some snacks, and definitely sunscreen. The machines seemed well maintained. I can't comment on the helmets as we brought our own. But if renting quads, bring gloves! I forgot mine and my new blister is proof lol. This was an absolute fabulous day and I highly recommend Backbone. If you guys are ever in NJ look me up and we will definitely go for a ride. Such a fun day!! Our ride was one of the highlights of our trip and we booked last minute. We explored Rollins Pass/ Jenny Creek for a full day. Along our trip we saw a moose and her calf and a good sized mule deer in velvet. The folks at backbone adventures were so friendly and helpful and even had ice cream treats for after our ride. I would recommend Rollins pass even though it's a good drive away. Phenomenal views and we felt like we had the place nearly to ourselves. For what you get, this place is well worth the money! Rented a Jeep for the day and had a great time exploring the Estes Park trails and enjoying the scenery. Staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable about the trails. They provide a tablet gps map which was invaluable, as there was spotty/non-existent cell service. We started at trail 461 (their map lists this as the Cool Trail) and continued on through the Switzerland Trail 93. We ended our trail ride at the bottom of the Switzerland trail at the 72. 461 was a great trail, more climbing and real off-roading than the Switzerland trail that they have listed as (Good place to start). Switzerland trail is an old railway, so fairly level albeit rocky and rough. With stopping to relax a couple of short 5-10 minute breaks and an additional good relaxation stop for 30-45 minutes, plus travel time to and from the BA store (50 minutes each way), the whole trip was about 6.5 hours. Could've found a few more trails to check out, but that amount of time bouncing around can take its toll on your energy levels and we were ready to call it a day. Highly recommend this as a unique adventure in the mountains! read more
