I made a u-turn after leaving the post office and saw a sign for Ethel's. We decided to give it a try for lunch. I ordered the egg salad sandwich, which was served on their sourdough rye. I am usually skeptical of rye because of its intensity, but their house made rye is perfect. I spoke with the woman at the counter who shared that they make their breads and use a light rye. It is joe one of my favorite egg salad sandwiches. I ordered coleslaw with it, and was not at all disappointed. Coleslaw is hit or miss with me. It is a hit at Ethel's. The matzo ball soup was delicious. The only complaint is that it was lukewarm. I like my soup hot. We took it home and ate it nice and hot with dinner. The feedback on the club sandwich was all positive. The accompanied salad was fresh and the dressing went with it nicely. It's a cute deli, easy to get to and a parking lot is right in front. They didn't have many seats in side of the deli, though. I counted 2-3 small tables and one that could seat 4-6. There is a lounge seating area for a few people and plenty of room to eat while standing with the long countertop. Maybe they do this, but I am not sure....they have plenty of space outdoors for seating if they wanted to add more tables and chairs outside. The cashier was friendly. We took home their Babka and the rugelach. We enjoyed both of them. I found the rugelach more appealing, but my guest has the opposite preference. read more

This is the texture of bagel I've been looking for in the area. Perfectly chewy! I highly recommend the pickled shallot and herb Schmear. So much flavor and a unique tang. The bagels are on the small side, which I actually really appreciate. It's a reasonable amount of food instead of a giant overloaded things. One of the best pastrami sandwiches I've had this year - only Delirama in Berkeley impressed me more - and a true New York-style deli in an industrial part of Petaluma. The sandwich was decadent, and while pricy, you could likely split it between two people given the generous portions. The bagel I ordered just wasn't as good as I would have hoped. It was big, sure, but it was a little dry. I'll go back for that sandwich, but I'll likely skip the bagel next time. Service: professional, smooth. Saddened to hear the news of Ethel's closing. The wife and I had become huge fans, never missing an opportunity to drop by on our forays to the wine country. Unfortunately, the restaurant business is nearly impossible. You need more than a wonderful product (indeed, Ethel's bagels are divine) - - you need a great location to create a "recipe" for strong, constant demand, perhaps good foot traffic, word of mouth, and a lot of luck. Here's hoping the owners don't give up and find a new home for their exquisite bagels. There's no doubt in my mind that the bagels (and fixings) are special enough to find their eternal place in the Bay Area. They are deserving of it. read more

Wow!! Come here and make this place a Petaluma staple!! We are in love. The bagels are tender, my hubs loved his lox smear, my vegan schmear totally had me fooled, and our 3-year-old gobbled up a challah roll made special with plain schmear. The rugelach and babka look heavenly. Tahini chocolate chip cookies! Coffee is bomb. The rest of the menu looks delish- chicken matzo ball soup!! Wagyu pastrami! Salads! Sandwiches! YUM. Probably the BEST bagels we I've had not only in Petaluma but I dare to say the Bay Area. It was so fresh - perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. OMG just thinking about it makes me drool. I had the classic open faced bagel. Just your typical lox with onions, capers, cream cheese, dill and a wedge of lemon. Simple yet SO good and fresh. They use organic ingredients and the salmon is sustainably caught. The staff was super nice. Lovely service and great recommendations. I didn't get to catch the name of the lady that rang my order but she was super sweet. The place itself is simple. Has some tables and couches to sit on. Not much foot traffic around, so I don't think it's a place to come and hang out around the area. But it's definitely a place worth your time and visit! You won't regret it. read more

A new bagel stand at the Ferry Building Farmers Market on Thursdays. They apparently are made out of sourdough, which is a nice San Francisco spin. Additionally, they still have that great chewiness and crunchy shell. Reuben on Parmesan Black Pepper Bagel: Watching them make this it seemed like the cooked the pastrami, sauerkraut and cheese on the griddle while only lightly toasting the bagel in a bagel toaster. And I completely agree with their technique because you don't want to an overly crispy bagel in this case, you want to appreciate it. The combination of everything tasted very good together, even heartier than a typical Reuben since bagels are better than bread. The generous dose of Russian dressing on the bagel was especially nice to contrast the richness of the pastrami. TriBECa on Everything Bagel: Reminds me of the bodega/deli sandwiches I used to get in NYC. Except this was way more artisanal. The bagel itself was both chewy and firm, as a bagel should be. The everything seasoning didn't seem to have much (if any) garlic or onion, so that was a little disappointing. Loved the thick and firm bacon Overall, probably better than those bodega/deli bagel sandwiches. Only downside was that it cost $13.03 (after tax) which definitely has the San Francisco price inflation compared to less expensive NYC bagel sandwiches! The Classic on Salt Bagel: Yes, there is something magical about lox, capers and thinly sliced onions against smooth cream cheese and a chewy crusty bagel. I personally would have preferred a little dill too, but it was tasty even without. Offering a lemon slice was a good way to jazz up the bagel with the lemon juice squirt. The salt bagel was a really good choice to really appreciate the bagel without distracting toppings; and it's got that traditional good bagel texture with the signature Bay Area sourdough tang. read more

I came upon a clear day (my bday)...ready to indulge in a delicious perfectly toasted bagel with plain schmear. The cream cheese is nothing from plain...it offers a slight tartiness that complements the well crafted bagels. Kudos to Chief Creative Baker Nicolas who delivers an authenticity that surely would have made his grandmother Ethel proud. Bagels are on point. I think maybe one of the best bagels I have found in Northern California to be honest. Now don't get your kishkes caught in a bunch with my next comment but the prices are way too high. I understand you are bringing high quality food and product and I wanted to try so much more and support your business but I cannot bring myself to pay $25 for a Reuben on a bagel. I offer this to you as advice with the understanding that I am not in the restaurant business. I know food is expensive to purchase and I know there are overhead expenses with staff and leasing, however, life is expensive now and there has to be a balance. There has to be a way to source good quality product that will allow prices to come in line and drive more volume. The matzah ball soup eaten at the table next to us looked amazing. As did the open face lox bagel but they split both dishes. Sure maybe they were not hungry or maybe they eat normal portions instead of huge portions like my fat tuchas or maybe they just didn't want to spend the extra dollars. Who knows but I would have ordered a Reuben for $18. I would have ordered a slice of babka for $5-6. Anyway - the food here - at least the bagel and shmear that I had is AMAZING and I only offer this as feedback. I hope to see a line out your door. I want to see you make your grandma proud. As a former New Yorker, I am picky about bagels. The taste and texture are great, the variety (pumpernickel, marble rye, salt) is excellent, the ambiance is wonderful as is the menu. As you can see from Nicholas' comment after my initial review, I was wrong in my assumption that they have a brick and mortar store. They have a production facility and sell their bagels via delivery and at farmers' markets. A few weeks ago at my request Alan picked up a container of their Black Garlic and Sherry schmear. I had read about it in others' reviews. It was a revelation, smooth and earthy, almost mushroomy. I wanted another container and when Alan wasn't up for a trip to the farmers' market, I went. It was the Sunday before Thanksgiving and when I got out of the car I realized there was a huge line just to get IN to the market. I got back in my car and went home. In a subsequent email Nicholas told me they were going to start an online ordering system so that people could reserve bagels and schmears to pick up. I decided to do that a day or two ago and discovered that they're also delivering to the East Bay. When I ordered and got to the point of reserving at the farmers' market I decided, since our farmers' market trips are unplanned and subject to cancellation, to look at the delivery options. Deliveries are on Thursdays and the delivery charge is reasonable. I ordered 4 everything bagels and 2 onion plus the Black Garlic schmear, which I discovered is in a compostable container, pleasing me a lot. This will be a nice addition to our bagel and schmears purchases from Boichik. Delivery, black garlic schmear and compostable container combined to earn a 5th star for Ethel's. read more

Picture this: you wake up at 11 the morning after having a little too much fun in downtown Petaluma the night before and desperately need carbs and caffeine. Ethel's certainly cures this need. I'm a huge bagel fan so I knew I needed to try Ethel's before leaving town. It's a very classic bagel, but certainly elevated compared to store-bought bagels. I was very happy with the crunchy onions on the top and vegan cream cheese option. My parents really enjoyed the variety of cream cheese smears to choose from. While I was happy with the cold brew, it's good to know ahead of time that they don't do espresso drinks- just hot coffee and cold brew. It was quick service with very friendly workers- a definite go to for any East Siders needing a bagel pick-me-up. There's an outdoor patio if you're looking to hang out to eat your bagel. The advantage to the location is that it isn't a super busy area so it would be a good spot to meet up with a friend while there's still good weather. read more
