I recently discovered this hidden little gem in the heart of adorable downtown Lynden. If you like used books, and if you like coffee, or if you at least like one of those, you need to head here for a truly delightful experience. I arrived early on a weekday morning, laptop in hand, and sipped on a delicious salted caramel mocha while I got some work done at a window seat. I also took some time to browse their wonderful books, including a massive cookbook section which I found hard to resist. The lady at the counter was very sweet and helpful, and the customers who came in were all cheerful and friendly. I also enjoyed a bagel and cream cheese, all-in-all the beginnings of a perfect morning in the north end of our lovely county. read more

Being a military wife, I've had coffee all over the country but today's mocha from Katz was hands down the best I've ever had. Flavorful and smooth and just the right balance of coffee and sweetness. Go for the coffee but stay for the books. A great used bookstore with a great selection of Christian books but so much else. They mostly just have Christian books. Coffee is average. Typical Christians, they don't follow any rules to keep customers safe from COVID.

Came in here on a whim to check out their book selection. I was surprised with the amount of books they had! The variety was lacking- about half their books are of the Christian religion in one way or another (fiction, non fiction, etc.). I was able to find some books that looked interesting and had to ask how their books are priced- prices are written on first or second page of each book in pencil. I honestly found some of the prices really high for a used book store. The woman working behind the counter was very friendly and helpful! This place also serves coffee/espresso and snacks which made it feel very cozy. read more

Hand down the best place to go sit and have a coffee with friends! I like to grab a coffee and go read or work on my book at one of their many comfy chairs. Lovely owners/employees, cozy atmosphere and amazing prices. Everything is made even better by the fact that the coffee beans are roasted here in small batches! Along with the great selection of books to browse through there are a good numbers of tables and chairs! Wifi is free and there are even a few games like chess and playing cards available. read more

I could have spent an hour in Katz! But I only had a few minutes, as I was doing a little afternoon stroll in Lynden with some friends. We all grabbed coffee at the front and the drinks get a huge thumbs up. My kids headed straight to the back where a large cove of books awaited them, and while it's disorganized in that "used books stacked ceiling to floor" way, my daughter managed to find a book she has been eyeing for months and we got a great price on it (about half off "big box" price.) They have a section of vintage books that my friend and I were eyeing (I collect vintage copies of "Little women" and while I didn't spot any, anyone who needs a gorgeous set of vintage books for their shelves should check here first! The prices were fair (written inside the book jacket) and the staff was friendly. I'll be back! read more

From my experience today, I suspect all these reviews are accurate, both the positive and the negative. I've been eyeing Katz! for a while but I'm usually in Lynden on Sundays when most places are closed. That's the day, not a weird time. I stopped in this afternoon and discovered the largest Christian book section I've seen outside a Christian bookstore. There was the Christian marriage, Christian finances, teen Christian and more. There was also some new releases and Harry Potter, and the messy mass of used books. The women (owner?) came to greet me and instantly said to come get her if I wanted anything. I'm not sure where she disappeared to because I didn't see her when I walked up the back. She was the only staff member and I was the only potential customer. I went elsewhere for coffee. read more

On your way out the door, buy a bag of Katz Black Pearl coffee beans--- delicious dark roast! In the little red wagon out front, they also sell the locally made fertilizer responsible for making Lynden's hanging baskets famous for their improbably lush abundance. And if you, like me, want or need to brush up on your Dutch, take your coffee to one of the tables and just listen-- at least one of their neighboring tables is likely to have a lively convo underway. This review is for the used book section of Katz! only not the coffee (I didn't order any, just shopped for books). The selection of used books is amazing and they are organized well, priced appropriately and they had a HUGE kids section! I was particularly impressed with the organization of the kids section how they had it broken down into: Early Readers, Young Readers, Teen Readers, etc. Very easy to find books appropriate for different age groups. My kids found lots of great books: Beverly Cleary, American Girl, Anne of Green Gables, etc. They had a large religious section with lots of reference books and even Bibles, sections on travel and cooking, a huge section of fiction novels and much, much more. Everything was organized so well and the selection and prices were so great I will definitely make it a point to stop in whenever I am in the area. read more

When my Grandma moved from the blueberry farm to town the one thing that kept 12-year-old visiting me from being completely bored was visitng Katz. I sat languidly among the books for hours while my mom visited Uncle after Aunt after cousin over cups of strong, store roasted coffee. Every time I journey up to the NW I have to go back and get a chai latte or a hot coco or, now that I'm a grown-up, a coffee. When I came back to Katz while visiting my family most recently, it was like walking into an old friend's house. The smells, the sounds it's all vaguely familiar and incredibly inviting. On a sweet summer morning, it's the perfect place to indulge in a cold brew and that new novel you just picked up from their book shelf. read more

The coffee's not that great, and I've actually been turned away before closing, but Katz has an impressive selection of used books for a shop its size (smallish store front nestled amongst some tea houses, an art jeweler, and music store). The seating area is very comfy and provides great Front St. people watching. Not the best coffee in Lynden, but a good place to drink it. read more

For me, it's the old-town atmosphere of Katz that makes it what it is. The authentic scarred wood floor is awesome, as is the faux ceramic ceiling. The coffee is 3 stars out of 5, often over roasted and thus a bit carbon-tasting. The used book selection is actually pretty good, with decent prices and good monthly sales on certain categories. read more
