We drove nearly twelve hours round-trip to visit the Dutch Bakery in Lynden because my husband is Dutch, and we were genuinely excited to experience an authentic Dutch bakery. Unfortunately, the visit was extremely disappointing. We spent approximately $40 on baked goods, including what we were told were stroopwafels. The cookies we received had no caramel filling and were extremely stale--so dry, brittle, and unpleasant that we could not eat them. There was also no freshness or expiration date on the package. The other products we purchased were disappointing enough that we ultimately threw everything away. The employee behind the counter was not knowledgeable about the products and could not make us a fresh stroopwafel. We also found very little of the Dutch selection or experience we had made the long drive expecting. I tried calling the bakery for two days, but I could not reach anyone because their telephone was apparently malfunctioning. By the time I finally reached the store, I had already discarded the inedible products. I was then told that they would not provide a refund because they have a strict 24-hour return policy. That policy seems especially unreasonable for stale, undated food--particularly when the store could not be reached by telephone during that period. I was not asking for anything excessive; I simply wanted the bakery to stand behind approximately $40 worth of food that was stale and inedible when it was sold to us. A sincere apology and reasonable effort to resolve the problem would have made a significant difference. Instead, the response felt dismissive and left us regretting both the purchase and the long drive. Based on the poor product quality, lack of freshness dating, limited product knowledge, inability to reach the business, and refusal to offer a reasonable resolution, I cannot recommend the Dutch Bakery in Lynden. read more

I had ordered cinnamon rolls from here before and they were amazing. I also purchased a couple hot chocolate packets for stocking stuffer and they were good. Today I stopped in and got a breakfast (Farmers) hand pie, an Irish cream coffee, and a white chocolate raspberry scone. I'm so disappointed. The handpie was not even half filled, the very nice young lady nuked it in the microwave to an inch of its life. It was dry, hard as a rock and the small amount of filling was not worth the price. I only ate half as the crust was too hard to bite into. So then still hungry I tried the scone. Even worse. A glutinous blob of no flavor. The size and texture of a hockey puck. I realized too late the the bottom was also burnt. I threw it away. The coffee was ok, but way overly sweet. I wish so bad I could give good stars but I spent $23 and all I got was a mildly ok coffee. read more

The Nanaimo bars were all dry, not fresh, and all but missing the creamy layer in the morning that makes them special. The strawberry pie was a big disappointment. It was artificially bright red with soggy cold fruit, so much for "fresh". I would hardly call it a pie also. There was no crust on top, or anywhere. It was thin all around. They were out of coffee and spoons. And the first two things I tried to order were also out on a 2:30pm afternoon. The coffee is over roasted diner style cigarette coffee. So if you're into that then it's good. I wasn't expecting much from the coffee, but I was hoping to have a decent pastry. Some of the other treats looked pretty good though. We grabbed a couple of cookies which were not great, especially the chocolate chip was lacking chocolate chips and was very dense and extremely crumbly. The croissants were more like yeasted baked goods, not necessarily what I would count as a croissant (they need to be buttery and flakey). They were ok, but maybe they didn't make a lot of stuff for the fair weekend and the locals purchased the extra good stuff already in the morning? This is a storied business in the heart of lynden. they been here over 100 years so they must have been doing something right. I tried a'hand pie' (beef wrapped on pastry)...a pastie for those from the UK and elsewhere. They were advertised as '10 % off'. The after discount cost of this pretty meager offering was $16. I can assume that the price without discount is about $17 and a half? I understand that the tariff situation has really hit whatcom county hard with a seismic drop in visitors from 5 miles up the road in Canada but charging $16 for this while your competition across the road will sell you a pretty substantial sandwich for the same price is a tough ask of your customers. I asked about the price and was told "it would be the 'normal' price but there's new restaurant taxes. I understand retail, it's hard. Food outlets are a tough road but I would be shocked if they ever sold more than one of these to the said person once they had seen what they get. The thing itself was 'ok' cold in the middle but the pleasant staff member had said she would warm it up for me if it needed it. It did but i was in my way by then. At $12 it would have been expensive but in line with my upper expectations. At $16 (or over $17 if i hadn't hit the special) it was egregious. Three stars because the server was pleasant (though could hade done without the 'blame it on the taxes'). The food item was 'mid' Perhaps it's harsh basing a rating on price but it's all part of the business and doesn't compare well with other options in the same neighborhood I wish them well but my advice is double check the prices abc avoid the hand pie. read more

I searched for the cookies I liked last time and found a small very pricey package and they seem to be stale - I remember being super excited about them and this did not live up to my memory. This Bakery is located in downtown Lynden. We tried their Florentine Cookie and the Sweet Bread. The Florentine Cookie was good but not worth the price of $6. The sweet bread cost $10 and tasted so bad that we had to throw it out. The sweetness just overwhelmed all other flavors. read more

We were able to visit it only once 3 years ago. Since then they were closed for renovation. Tried to stop by today, but got warm welcome notice that due to "safety reasons" they don't work 24 Dec - 26 Dec. Why don't own a decision and just say - "we are closed these days" and that's it. Such "safety reasons" sounds like a BS and excuses. Closed? I'm fine. But own it! Don't give some lame reasons. Banner just at the entrance "eat local" is so ironic. Super cute and cozy bakery on the main drag in Lynden. My pattern lately seems to be going to bakeries in the late afternoon on weekends, when the best stuff is usually picked over and the pastries have been sitting in the case for a while. Today was no different as it was almost 3 pm. That didn't matter! Their cinnamon roll, which is the size of my face, was delicious with a ton of cream cheese on it. It's a multi-sitting size roll. I also picked up an almond pie, a maple bar for the husband, a lemon white chocolate muffin (also delicious and moist) and 2 ollibrullers. Fabulous. Minus a star for the odd checkout experience. In addition to pastries, they sell some Dutch cocoa, large coffee cakes, chocolates, etc. I picked up 2 nice chocolate bars to go with my haul, and the girl just scratched her head trying to ring them up. She told me they weren't in the system. A manager came by to help her and, I guess picked a price and said, "That looks fair." The girl told me the bars are $3.99 a piece and that it's sort of the price they settled on since they didn't have them in their system. I told her never mind. My experience was horrible. I received a gift card from a friend. Since I do not live in Lynden and very seldom darken their door... I've had this gift card for some time. Today I tried to use it and lo and behold they would not honor it. It was only for $15. Equal to a couple of scones... and they denied it as a card that was not recognizable in their computer system... not a very good business practice... so beware of purchasing a gift card with them. Staying in Birch Bay many locals sent us over to Lynden to see the tiny quaint Dutch town. Loved the tasty Stroopwafel latte and a delicious raspberry muffin. I considered taking one of everything as it all looked so good. We came in during lunchtime and the line kept growing on this very wet and rainy day. read more

It has been awhile since here and recall it being good yet not exactly what was expecting. Hope for more of a traditional bakery, which this isn't, yet it was still good. They have a lot of sweets and stuff like that here. Enjoyed and will be back if want this type of bakery. read more

Loved this place! I can't wait to come again and again. While I was there the owner/baker (not exactly sure) came out and chatted with a young couple who had special ordered lavender cupcakes for their wedding. The couple was so pleased, and the owner/baker was kind and cordial. We ate a doughnut which was glazed, twisted with a bit of cinnamon, and clearly homemade in style. We had a flourintine that was crispy and sweet, which was nice because they get soft and soggy easily. We got a cookie for our daughter. I'm sure it will be devoured, as it is pink and sparkly. If I had to pick a con, then I would say the espresso was too strong/dark for my taste. But that's really just a matter of preference, and merely something to be aware of. read more

I have personally never been into Lynden before, and yes, I have lived in Washington my entire life, and have crossed the Canadian boarder, but I have never really driven through the town of Lynden. Let's say, it's a great place. Okay, about the bakery. I love small town feeling places. This place feels right. We had two things there on our visit. Now my wife has been here before, so she led me to the coffee cake and a frosted cookie for the kiddo. The Coffee Cake was delicous. What you want is a moist but not not overly, because you are going to have it with... Coffee. The topping is lovingly powdery and holds together just enough, to be perfect. The crumb is good, and fine, and when we took it out to our family, it was a good ending to a good lunch. Let's talk about the Cookie. The Frosted Sugar Cookie was too fresh, the frosting was not yet set, which is a-okay, because it was probably taken out of the over a few hours before, and just frosted. So I say this in just, because it was a tasty and good tasting cookie. The shop is a small place, with a few chairs/tables. Expect some delicious food, and if you are on your way to Canada or back to the states, this stop is worth it. read more

I was in Lynden a few weeks ago and stopped in to the Lynden Dutch Bakery and, wow, what a cute little spot! I was in a rush, so unfortunately I didn't get to sit and enjoy what I bought, but it was all goooood. I ended up getting a loaf of banana bread, a (very large) cream puff, lemon bundt cake, and some stroopwaffels. Oddly enough, the absolute best thing I bought was the banana bread. It had this rich, dark flavor and reminded me of how my grandma used to bake. It was wonderful and I can't wait to stop in again! read more

If you're from the area, Lynden Dutch Bakery is the mecca of this Dutch village in upstate Washington. It's in "downtown" Lynden (literally a small street with a handful of businesses) and have been making breads and pies for over 100 years. The people who run it are very friendly and you'll feel like you're part of their family the moment you enter. Once you're greeted with a smile, let your eyes explore the dozens of baked goods from breads to giant cinnamon rolls to muffins. They do serve breakfast and lunch and even have bagels and coffee available in the mornings. This and their muffins are just okay. For a bakery, their muffins taste store bought v. made fresh each morning in the bakery. However, they get four stars for their maple bars. One of my friends had dozens of them flown to her wedding in rural Ohio because they are that good. Every time I come to town, I pay the $30 for a half sheet of maple bar cake. It feeds an army and will last for days. The dough is perfectly baked creating a soft texture. The maple frosting is generously added to the top creating an explosion of flavors. If you're in Lynden, stop by this location (the original) and order a maple bar. You won't regret it! read more
