Visited on a Friday night at about 6:00. Plenty of room for our party of 6 to be seated at a table when we arrived. When we left at around 7:30 the tables were all full. This places reminds me of the Porter Cafe in West Roxbury (except it's larger), with a little bit of the Dogwood mixed in. Kind of dark and homey with exposed brick walls. The menu is more casual than the Porter (not many entrees and lots of pizza and burgers.) The apps we had were very good, especially the onion rings, which were home-made with large juicy onions. The nachos were large, but needed more toppings. (When will places realize that you can't pile the chips "way high" and cover them with cheese without having all the chips in the middle be naked?) The pizza was good but not fantastic. They have a good selection of different pizzas or you can design your own. The service was friendly and efficient. They have about 8 beers on tap and just an OK wine selection. My wife had a watermelon cocktail that she said was delicious. The crowd was very much neighborhood families. We brought 2 kids and the table behind us had several kids as well. The people sitting at the bar were mainly young couples. The music was a bit too loud when we arrived, but faded into the background as the night wore on. They have several large TVs (one in each corner) that fight for your attention, even though the sound was off and it was just re-runs of golf. Ok, I've checked this place out a bunch of times considering it's in my backyard. Basically, it's frickin' awesome...though I have some reservations. 1. BIG, big plus there. 3. Great fries! No joke. Hand cut. Very quality. Real good fried fish. 4. Dapper burger I think? Avocado, bacon, cheddar. Awesome! Great flavor. 5. (Beer list. Ehhhh. Okay. My new favorite place! Walked in and got a table on a Friday night ~ 7ish. Moderately crowded but a few open tables. I thought the beer selection was great with the standard domestic choices supplemented by local microbrews and the OUTSTANDING Shipyard Seasonal rimmed in caramel - pure heaven. The menu was sufficiently varied pizza, apps, burgers, interesting salads, pasta and reasonable prices. Had a fabulous fish sandwich with a great portion size. Liked the coleslaw too. My only complaint is the ceiling heater seemed to be blowing right on us, so I was on and off with my sweater. I was o.k. with the music selection, but it got real loud as the evening wore on. Why must a patron leave with a sore throat from shouting? Finally, I was a little surprised the place cleared out so early, but perhaps it's more of an afterwork/family crowd which is fine with me. As long as I can walk in and get a table - this place will be on the top of my list - surpassing some of the more upscale, overpriced chi-chi wanna be local spots. Give me a cozy, brick-walled pub with reasonably priced food, beer and wine and I'm sold. read more

I subscribe to the Publick House's philosophy: eat good food, drink better beer (though I do tend to eat great food). Eugene O'Neill's is great addition to the scene at Forest Hills. they have a better beer list than my local favorite, Dogwoods. They have good food, too, and friendly service. And they just passed my test: last week, I sat down and watched as my friendly waitress stared at the taps along the bar and read them off in order, stopping to remember a few. I made a suggestion: print out your beer list. This week, I sat down and had a list of beers not only on paper, but also on the wall. I am angling for this place to thrive. The comments below about loud (country) music are no longer true. Nice vibe, brick walls, candles, and for those weeknights when I have to crank out one last document, this pub has free wifi to send it off to the team. Coffice denizens take note: it is a pub where one could work. Looking forward to this place developing a similar community to Dogwoods, and really appreciate having a rotating list of good craft brew on draft and on tap (I count 20 taps). read more

Went into Eugene O'Neills last night for a beer and although I wasn't completely impressed I think this place has lots of great potential. The good: * The interior design is great! I am a sucker for exposed brick walls * The bar tender was really nice and attentive. * Cocktail list looks like they offer some delicious drinks The so so: * Beer list just okay. I much prefer the beer selections at the Gate or Behan. * The food (full disclosure I didn't eat) as to be expected is pub fare with a decent selection of burgers, pizza, etc. I would have preferred 1 or 2 lighter options. read more

Pretty decent beer selection for the area (only canary Square has better). Pretty good food. Very nice atmosphere. It's really a great place to hang out (especially in the summer when the windows are open and you can have some great Forest Hills people watching in front of you). My suggestion, do the Forest Hills bar crawl. Start with a beer and some music at Dogwood, saunter down to JJ Foley's for a $2 Pabst and some amazing drunk shows, and then end the night at Eugene O'Neill's for a couple hours. I am so happy this bar is in Forest Hills- The atmosphere is wonderful- a full on Irish bar, with a very nice attentative staff. The "ginger" another poster was disparaging is actually the manager - so yeah she's "chatting it up" with the staff- hello? She actually my favorite one- friendly, but not too too friendly if you know what I mean. She has made me and my boyfriend feel very welcome every time we go, remembers our beers and we really don't go in there that often. The beer selection is very good. I find that the food is very good too- simple menu but very fresh ingedients. They have a Trivia nite on Saundays and Tues. which is I guess, fun for those who go for that- but can be kinda annoying if you are not there for it. All in all- just a nice, relaxed, sorta unexpectedly nice bar across from Forest Hills t-stop. read more

I hope the food gets better because I reallllyyyyy want to like this place. I almost ordered the steak tips but I noticed someone at the bar ordered them and it looked like they were sawing through wood. So, I ordered the turkey burger. It was great but the fries were really soggy and gross. I went with a group of people, everyone had gross sad limp fries. I didnt say anything because I dont think the cook knows how to make fries. The beer menu is fab but they dont have much to offer in regards to traditional Irish alcohol. Our server was friendly and quick with our orders. I'll go back...but, with Dogwood around the corner, I hope they improve their food. read more

Have been a few times for after work drinks since it's one of the closest bars to us. It's always pretty empty which is great for us. I love the fried pickles and it's great to try a new beer from their selection. They always have a new selection written on their chalkboard. read more

The other day, I was 45 minutes early for meeting a friend at nearby Forest Hills Station. I whiled away the time at Eugene O'Neill's, and am very glad that I did so! Friendly barkeep, relaxed atmosphere, very companionable (if that's the word). Although I live some nine or ten miles away, I will make it a point to return to the congenial purlieux of this fine pub the next time I'm in the neighbourhood. I heart this place so bad. When I was painting my apartment before moving in, the only thing that got me through to the end each day (besides Led Zeppelin's 'Presence' on repeat) was thinking about which beer I was going to try. I think I also ate here 3 or 4 nights in one week, which in most cases would make me feel like a horrible human being with way too much disposable income. Or an alcoholic who's using dinner as a beard to mask the problem. Either way, this place is great. They have a good selection of beers on tap, highlighting a few harder to find ones and locals. They also have rotating bottles of rare and seasonal beers. The food is great - I recommend almost everything, although my go-tos are usually the chili or curried fries appetizers. The environment is a diverse laid back crowd, and I've had several conversations with strangers during an evening pint. Finally, the wait staff and bartenders are very friendly, knowledgable, and chatty. If you're too scared to check out fireside tavern down the road, give this place a shot! read more

Upping them a star for my experiences since the first time. I love the Volcano pizza. The trivia on Tuesdays is great and a good crowd, and they open the entire front window when it's nice out. Staff is very friendly and they now have pumpkinhead on tap served with a caramel cinnamon sugar rim. Very glad to have a local spot like this. read more

I can't recall the exact name, but participating in the quizzo was really fun! It made a casual night having typical nachos ( a bit light on the guac and chicken side, and not evenly spread toppings) go even better. I love the neighborhood feel, which I felt even more when playing- so many people frequent this commonly that you can see the great rapport the staff have with the clients and so forth. Service was fine, just a little hard to get the hostess' attention in the far corner. Sitting near the opened windows was awesome with the great breeze. read more

Not a place for people in their early and mid 20s. I recently moved down the street and last night brought a friend from out of state to try out O'Neill's. We were extremely disturbed when the bartender tried to take away my friend's license, claiming that it was fake, and refused to serve us. We have no idea why her ID did not scan, but the bartender would not accept any other form of identification or allow us to explain our situation. My friend has never had an issue with her ID in the past, and we would have been happy to work out the issue, but the bartender was unapologetically dismissive. Unfortunately, this place appears not to welcome women in their 20s. read more

It's a nice place. Good staff, generally, nice, strong, well-made drinks, and good food. Lunchtime in particular is a good deal. Their mixed-grill is an awesome deal, and the chef keeps a very clean kitchen, which I respect a great deal. My only gripe is something that is completely out of their control -- bums and lowlifes wander in from the bus station asking to use the bathroom ALL THE TIME. The poor bartender ends up being a potty bouncer instead of a drink slinger. This neighborhood could be on its way up, bringing all the businesses on the street with it, but the area is full of what I can only assume are bums and escaped mental patients. read more

I am not a beer drinker which is too bad, because if I was I would probably just live here. The oninons rings are the best I've ever had, there is an involved process in making them-I can't remeber what what it is - but it is so worth it. They also have the best ice tea I have ever had, I am a tea drinker and I love a good ice tea. Some care was taken here. Hands down our favorite pub in Boston during our week long visit. Their craft beer selection is incredible. If you aren't impressed with what they have on draft, there is a plentiful bottle selection to choose from. The bartender was extremely knowledgable about all the beers and had great recommendations. He was extremely generous and after I told him I was running the marathon gave me one of 26.2 glasses without me even asking. The ambiance of this place is just awesome. We didn't eat here so can't comment on the food. If I lived here I would be a frequent visitor of this place. Love love love Eugene O'Neill's! read more

I live nearby in JP, and this place has become a regular for my boyfriend and I. The beer list is great, the service is awesome, and the food is fantastic. They have your typical pub food selections and some traditional Irish dishes. It's pretty reasonably priced, especially considering it's in Boston which tends to be expensive more often than not. The pub setting is awesome and they play good music. They even have games for you to play upon request. Last time we went we played Jenga. read more

Brunch review: So much to hate. Mason jar glasses, way too salty home fries, no hollandaise, not having the afternoon to laise about this wonderful place.... Each obstacle was beautifully overcome and I am a happy girl. My mason jar bloody was garnished with bacon. Yes, still hipsterish, but c'mon. Bacon! No hollandaise, but a lovely Mornay suggested by my equally lovely bartendrix worked quite well. Eggs poached perfectly over a terrific corned beef hash. Mornay toned down those salty homefries so they perfectly dealt with last nights Midway adventure. I watched a mimosa being created and 3 1/4 of a glass of bubbly topped with a splash of oj that makes me sad I have to go to work and can't stay and spend a lazy afternoon here drinking perfect mimosas. Well, what was promising to be a rough afternoon has already been made better by brunch here. I will be back for sure!! And again, oh that hash! And kudos to the bar staff. Brunch is the worst shift ever but they were on point. And as I'm leaving they put on the "mom jeans" playlist and started dancing to Fine Young Cannibals. So sad I have to go. read more

This place is awesome. Whenever I head to Boston on a trip, I hop on the orange line to Forest Hills and cross the street to EON's. This place is perfect for your bar regulars or your hipster crowd- it's a nice blend. The bartenders are very knowledgeable when it comes to beers and liquors as they have a lot of craft beer on hand. They pour a Guinness the right way, and it will even be topped off with a shamrock if Bernie pours it for you. It's a small place, so it does get busy during happy hour and big games, but most people are coming and going so you shouldn't have to wait long at all for a seat. Prices are very reasonable. All in all great service, great food, and great drinks to go along with a location that makes it very easy for a visitor to go to a great bar that isn't in Downtown Boston and Isn't charging $14 a drink. read more

This is the most underrated pub/bar/restaurant in JP. The service is great, all the servers are very friendly and the bartenders make you feel right at home. The food is fantastic, as a vegetarian sometimes its hard for me to eat at pubs but the veggie burger is great and so are all the salads. The friend pickles are stupidly delicious. The kitchen is quick and the specials are constantly delicious. There are tons of regulars at this bar and feel like a regular the second you walk in. We went here for a few beers and ended up staying for hours. Great beer selection on draft and even more esoteric selections in the bottle. The bartender was awesome, providing great service and recommendations. Try the Belgiums from the bottle that go in the tall glass in the wood frame. We ended up there again two nights later since the first time was so good. We had a larger group this time and the waitress took great care of us and was equally knowledgeable about the beers and cocktails. My wife and I are in the process of visiting and reviewing Boston's Irish pubs. It's a wonderful activity! Eugene O'Neill's has great atmosphere, great beer selection, tasty food and both of our orders were hot - the second time around. We should know by now that after nearly an hour wait the food was cooling off somewhere. Our Saturday mid-afternoon visit was not a busy time for them so we're not sure how this happened. We will go back to try some of the other interesting beers and menu items. Hopefully, we will find the service to be far better next time. read more

Another great bar. Same owners as Napper Tandys in Roslindale but this place is better. Off street parking after 5pm in MBTA lot makes this place easy to get to. Inside is brand new with real neighborhood pub feel. Food was good and great draft selection. read more

From the outside this place seems like a dive bar. From the inside, it's anything but that. Came here to watch a game on a Friday night and got a table with minimal effort. The beer selection was nice and the food didn't disappoint. Shared an appetizer sampler with my friend and the portions were hearty. I live close by and may have to make this my regular Celtics game watch location. read more

great addition to the neighborhood! Went with a group of 6 first time we were there and tried the mile high nachos and a number of the burgers as well as a pizza. Nachos were very good - huge portion and toppings were fresh. Pizza was good - nothing too remarkable about it - different from the thin cracker crust of Dogwood Cafe 2 doors down. The burgers were the standout - great beefy flavor and they nailed the temperature on each burger from mid-rare to well. Fries were hand cut and the cole slaw was excellent, fresh and house-made - surprised how good it was actually. Service was good too. Beer list was solid but not exciting. we've been back a couple of times since and quality was consistent with the first visit - really glad to see a nice new addition to the neighborhood - now if Tonic could get its act together we'd have the beginnings of a good restaurant row in Forrest Hills. read more

I went there for my birthday in October with my kids. We had steak tips, a burger and chicken. It was a midweek night. The food was horrible, sour tasting, like old meat. Buffalo wings had no hot sauce. Beer was good. I told the owner some time later and he went on about the best chef, where he worked , etc. It does not matter. The food tasted sour. Steak tips, chicken and burgers are basic bar food that should be easy to do and at least taste ok. NOT HERE- I went back today and had the steak tips to give them a 2nd chance- The tips were at least not sour, but bland . The french fries were mcdonalds fries boiled in the steak tips juice. The alleged beans were carrots and cucumbers dropped in the same steak sauce and heated for a minute or too. - no salad or soup comes with dinner- not going back for dinner, maybe beers but only beers in good weather- their sister bar , napper tandy's, in rossie square has good bar and good bar food, not dinner entree type, , food.and beer but jp, oneils, done with it- bad food- good beer- nice looking beer bari eat out every night in jp, west rox, rossie- so i have seen a lot of places- this place as far as food goes needs huge improvement the beer and atmosphere are pretty good read more
