Pros: Tips (and I think taxes too) are included, which is why the menu prices seem a little high. But it's like dining in Europe. Awesome! Decor is comfortable enough, casual, modern without being too off-putting. Service was very good. Cons: Reservations can be hard to get sometimes. Food: My tuna tartare could have been a little better. It was covered in some kind of viscous sauce which I didn't need and it came with some tasteless toast. The beets were just OK, a little too sour with the yogurt it was smothered in. On the other hand, the sauce-less pizza we got, which I don't usually like, was delicious, with fresh basil and taleggio. The brussel sprouts were quite tasty. The drinks were fine-pretty good. What a mixed experience. 2.5 years since we last ate here. Then it was small and intimate. Very much a JP vibe. They have expanded and its for one easier to get a reservation. Which was a plus. We were seated right away. Nice table with a very pleasant but absent minded server. It's small plates and now pizza. We ordered the brussel sprouts, ceviche, wild ramps, wagyu beef , salad, mushroom pizza and dessert. We each ordered a drink. For hits -- brussel sprouts were a bit, good crunch and sweetness. The salad had a great crunch and was well prepared. Mushroom pizza was maybe the highlight. As good is not better than Posto. Very well executed. The best of the best was the donut. Amazing donut! For misses -- the ceviche we could not find the fish and it was over powered by the seasonings. The ramps again all we could taste was the cilantro. Wagyu beef - my friend is a huge fan of it. She found it chewy and oddly paired with grits? Other notes -- this place was so loud that we could not hear each other, almost at a night club level. Unpleasant. Service was very inconsistent and I'd offer not up to their standards. Last the price we spent $240 for two people. Walking into Brassica the vibe is instantly casual and welcoming. Our server Ana was fantastic. My husband can't have any food with alcohol in the cooking and instantly upon hearing that she had the chef mark up a menu - something we SO appreciate. At a new to us place We like to know "what shouldn't we miss", and Ana's recs were spot on. The Crab & Donuts were incredible, with the sauce being "lick the bowl clean" delicious. The pork belly with brown butter marshmallow is not to be missed. The risotto - using Parmesan 3 ways was also delicious. I really like what Brassica is doing. The entire menu has a fresh spin on items you might haveve had, but prepared in a unique way that you won't forget. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed brunch this much. The pretzel biscuit was simply incredible. As someone who loves pretzel anything, this was like heaven for me. So soft and warm, and the honey butter was great. The hashbrowns were also excellent. Perfect little potato bites, soft on the inside and the perfect crisp on the outside. Cheese sauce also great. The brunch fried rice was the most unique thing we tried, and it did not disappoint. Super yummy, and had a nice kick to it. Big fan. And chicken and waffles were also great. The chicken was crispy and juicy, and paired well with the very soft waffles. Good to mix and match with all the hot sauces, too! It's been a while since I've reviewed brassica but that's what happens when you are a frequent visitor. They do a solid brunch. There's enough savory and sweet options for all palates. I love that they do a breakfast fried rice; not a lot of places have this option- it's usually waffles, french toast, and pancakes, which are great but hey, more choices more fun. I also get their maple umeboshi latte which is phenomenal. No one else makes this flavor. Umeboshi is a sour Japanese plum btw, I googled for you! So yummy! Very diverse and interesting flavors. Plates are small but filling, the fried chicken was delicious and juicy and had a side of pickled cabbage and I believe strong wasabi mustard that complimented the sweet chicken sauce. The risotto had a very strong parmesan umami flavor, it might be too strong for some but I added some hot sauce to help. The corn salsa was amazing, a good soft heat. Everything was so good and they used ingredients and mixture of flavors that I would've never thought to put together. I love when things are new and different. The beets were amazing and the ceviche. The pork belly was super rich. The salty crust of the pork belly was balanced with the marshmallow. The risotto also had a mix of sweet and savory and was super unique. The fried chicken might have been my least favorite but only because I couldn't taste any chicken but the flavors were good. We hadn't been back in years, since before they expanded into the old Dogwood Café space. It's always been a neighborhood gem, but now it's a full-on destination. My wife and I live in the South End, and we've now decided to make Brassica a destination for daytime brunch dates. We stopped in on Sunday. There were loads of vegetarian options for us, including the ability to substitute vegetarian proteins for basically all of the meat. We sat at the bar and had a wonderful time chatting with the friendly bartender and servers. We'll be back as soon as we can. Long live Brassica. read more

We're glad we finally visited! We shared the fingerling potatoes, and separately got the Biscuits and Gravy and the Brown Butter Pancakes. The pancakes were buttery and sweet, and the salty butter on top with lemon zest made them over the top delicious. The bearnaise on the fingerling potatoes was lemony as well, which added a sharpness that went really well with the smashed potatoes. The biscuits and gravy were also pretty good, and the gravy was nicely herbed. The fried chicken that came on top was a bit tough and overcooked, which was disappointing, but didn't add to the dish; i'd probably get the fried tofu instead next time. Service was really nice and speedy, and the restaurant itself was lively and fun. The donuts were also delicious, easily beating Union Square Donuts in my book; we got the chocolate sprinkle and apricot caramel. We'll definitely be back for more donuts, and hopefully more meals! read more

All these years later, and Brassica still has such friendly, warm service. Recently we went for Saturday night dinner and had "The Ride" which is their tasting menu, $120 per person. It was 9 of their plates plus a dessert. It was way too much food (they had said it would be). We could have simply picked what we wanted to eat and gotten a reasonable amount of food for a reasonable price. I do not recommend "The Ride". As for the food, we liked the tuna tartare (a tad salty, but still good) and the hamachi crudo. The brussels are noteworthy at Brassica, so it was nice to get them - they are charred with maple and miso and served over white rice. The pork belly was fine. The lobster pasta was so spicy we couldn't eat it. The oxtail was excellent - I loved the flavors of the tomatillo; ironically, we probably would have not ordered that unless it came with The Ride, and I am glad we got to try it. The one thing we had that didn't seem to be in the menu was duck, which was very good. We also were served a pepperoni pizza and caesar salad, neither of which I could eat because I was so full. And the salad was so salty, I wouldn't have been able to eat it anyway. Dessert was tiramisu, which was solid. I'll go back to brassica, but pick my own dishes, and ask for ones that aren't spicy and have less alt in them,. To be fair, most restaurants over salt their food these days, which is so unfortunate. read more

Have been wanting to try Brassica Kitchen for quite some time and managed to get an elusive brunch reservation on a Saturday afternoon. The staff were incredibly friendly and the ambiance of the restaurant was more like that of a high-energy cafe rather than a typical brunch spot. The menu is short and sweet, with a lot of focus on their "hero item" -- fried chicken. Everything we ordered was delicious. Despite not being a big coffee drinker, I loved the flavor of their Maple Umeboshi Latte, which was one of the best iced lattes I've had in a while. The Biscuits & Gravy with their signature fried chicken, unique pretzel biscuit, and scrumptious gravy was top notch. Pizza was extremely disappointing. Pizza was very thin and crunchy almost like a pita bread pizza. For me pizza is all about the dough and this dough unlike artisan bread was very bland and unmemorable. In addition, pizza was a very bad value at $28 for a small 12" pie. If I was rating the restaurant solely on the pizza I would give it 1 star. Brussels Sprouts were delicious but in my opinion overpriced at $19.50. They were out of quite a few items when I went for a later dinner, but the staff kindly communicated these details to us. Parking can be a bit tricky. Their signature is their fried chicken which I think is among the best in the city. Their dinner menu is excellent and skews to a more refined, small plates experience (the koji risotto is among the most comforting, umami-packed dishes I have come across in my years of Boston eating). I went to culinary school. 3/5, there were some good elements, but I wouldn't be quick to return. We got their two person tasting menu and one cocktail, and the total was $250. To clarify, the two of you share the 7 dishes, you don't get your own. Burger The salad inside was interesting and the meat was fairly good (a very thin patty), the bun was dry. Ceviche The potato crust was very well executed. The few pieces of fish were roughly chopped and a little chewy. It needs a lot more citrus, consider serving it with lime wedges. Striper The fish itself lacked flavor, but the charcoal skin helped. The dish was very wet due to the cherry juice, consider making it into a puree instead. Crudo Fresh, however overpowered by the black pepper. Cod Cauliflower was close to raw, however your sauce was excellent. Lobster This is the smallest lobster tail I have ever seen, and was overcooked. It has also gone down to room temperature, since the potatoes underneath are served cold. Risotto We left over half of the dish behind. Far too soupy to be considered risotto, I would compare the texture to rice pudding. We were not a fan of the parmesan and shoyu combination. The risotto was broken (looked very greasy). Cheesecake I think a vanilla bean could make this so much better. Maybe a crème anglaise as well. We did not enjoy the flavors added to the chocolate mousse. read more

Went here for brunch for the first time. It's small but definitely feels very warm and cozy as soon as you enter inside. And loud because it's busy - clearly a very popular place. I ordered the omelette which had lots of arugula and that wasn't really my favorite. I would have liked onions or tomatoes. It came with hollandaise sauce and that combination again was not my thing. It was a bit too salty as well. The freshly made sourdough bread was good - very greasy and again had the salty thing going on and I would have liked jam or some spread to add to the toast. The hubs ordered French toast of which I tried one bite and thought was pretty good. He thought it was okay. The apple butter, caramel and streusel wasn't his thing. The maple umeboshi latte was really good, very creamy, rich, foamy delicious! Friends ordered the biscuits and gravy, chicken and waffles and duck chorizo dishes - all of which looked great and they seemed to enjoy. I'm only giving this three stars because my food was just not to my liking this time. I'll be willing for sure to return and try their dinner which I hear is small plates with a rotating menu. I like that they're conscientious about paying their staff fair wages and adding fees to the bill. No need for additional calculations for tip although be prepared for that slightly higher bill. Service was friendly. We Ubered there so not sure of parking but there's probably street parking around. There's fun art on the walls everywhere adding to the atmosphere. This is my brother's favorite spot that he has visited 5 or so times in the past month and has tried almost every item on the menu! What I most love about the dishes is their flavors. We got the Brussels sprouts - perfect combination of salty and sweet with amazing texture and delicious rice. We got the fried rice - again, love the sweet and salty combination. And we got the chocolate flan which was delicious! Each item was uniquely flavored, had a mixture of texture and combinations of spicy/sweet/salty/sour. Every bite was just so delicious. Definitely worth a visit, but definitely try to reserve ahead of time as the place is popular and packed! It is right across from the metro, so convenient to get to as well. Ambiance is cute too. Visited this place back in August. We ordered the pork belly, brussels, risotto, lobster tail (I believe it was a special as its not on the menu now), fried chicken and the flight of hot sauces. The pork belly was tender but absolutely smothered in a sauce that I found gluey and sickly sweet, for 26+ dollars it was no bigger than my thumb, three bites. Risotto and brussel sprouts were okay, I've had much better. The lobster tail was a massive disappointment, its mild flavor was completely lost as it was served on what I believe were fermented onions and potatoes. I had to flag servers down for refills and to take a drink order. Fried chicken is solid, but you can get good Korean Fried Chicken just about anywhere right now. Their fermented "hot sauces" somehow all managed to lack heat, flavor, and distinction. Honestly, grab Korean Fried Chicken and whip up a batch of Kewpie Siracha\Mayo to go with it and you can skip this place. Seating is cramped but, that led to the only pro of the evening; getting to watch the guy at the table next to us crash and burn on a date with an obnoxiously loud woman I believe may have been scientifically engineered in a lab to have every red flag humanly possible ... hilarious. Wildly over rated -- lots of hype, but Brassica fell well short of what was promised.
