I feel bad almost for not asking the names of the two wonderful people who helped me on 7/31/13. I had never been to a hostel before. I was absolutely petrified because I didn't have my own bathroom, and I thought maybe, that was where things would go wrong. I did my booking via (ironically) booking.com. I spent $46 on a twin room. I paid with an American Express card, which they didn't except personally, but saved my reservation. When I called them with concerns, the woman I spoke to on the phone was so incredibly nice. She said everything was reserved, but that I'd either have to pay in $ or by a credit card they accepted. While this is kind of out of the water, I was screwed over on my trip to San Francisco, and I lost almost all the money to pay for my room due to a friend being an absolute idiot and not picking me up at a bus station to bring me to the airport. I was absolutely scared to even show up; I had it on my mind the whole time. While I was flying to San Fran, all I hoped was they would allow me a phone call (as I don't have a phone, but what I call a "smartfi" which basically picks up WIFI connections. When I arrived, I was treated with the upmost respect and regards. I told them my horror story of not being able to immediately pay them, and I needed my mother, or someone in Texas, to wire me about 30 dollars so that I could actually pay for the room. Not only were the hosts gracious, they spoke to me the whole time, calming me down, and let me use their phone to make a long distance call. I was so happy that my mother understood, and she sent me $50 in mercy cash to my debit card (I plan my trips by the dollar, so the uncalled for taxi in Texas sent me back $40 for a 5 mile trip). Immediately, I ran the card through their computer, and I was good with them in the money part. The guy who ran the place (like I said, I wish I remembered his name), was so kind and made me laugh to calm down my nerves. He said, "I have good news and bad news." I said..."Uh oh...." Yeah. The bad news was that some idiot didn't want to hear street noise, and that their room was in front of the establishment, therefore, they saw the main part of the street and I guess were bothered by the noise. I'm from New York. You could bring a marching band into my room and I wouldn't be bothered. The bad news was I lost my twin sized bed room. The good news was, I got a complete king sized bed, one of the largest rooms in the establishment. I slept, like a king. Don't expect to watch too much cable television there, as there was only about 15-18 channels, but I caught two episodes of Seinfeld and How I met Your Mother and laughed till I fell asleep. For those of you scared about a hostel, yes, I didn't have my private bathroom. But every time I used the public bathroom, I felt safe. I thought I might walk into a locker room full of sweaty disgusting people. Instead, they had 2 baths, and 2 toliets on the second floor, with a lock on the door, so it was ultimate privacy. I checked out, and had nothing but great words to say to the host. I told them it was one of the best hotels I've been to, and THIS WAS A HOSTEL. Yeah, I saw some odd folks in there, but if you bitch about a $46 room in San Francisco, you deserve to get your ass kicked. I wish nothing but the best for this place, and I have no idea when I'll ever be back in San Fran, but you bet my ass this will be the first place I look for. The neighborhood isn't exactly the greatest, but the hostel doesn't resemble the neighborhood. I saw maybe 10 hostels along the street while walking towards Market, and they all looked like shit. If any of the two people helped me can see this message, I thank you so much for understanding that I got into a quagmire, (giddity), and I absolutely loved my short stay, This might not be the place for an entire family, but this is DEFINITELY the place for maybe one or two travelers trying to enjoy the west coast without getting suckered into paying $200 for a room with the same quality. I stayed here about a month ago. I parked in front of the bldg, and got buzzed in. The front desk keeper knew exactly who I was... it was already after midnight! He stayed up for me, and for that, I am grateful... THE FRONT DESK CLOSES AT 11PM! I had NO IDEA... So just know that for the future, if you plan on staying here. :) I asked about my park, and he said no, you can't park there, because you can get a ticket. He then pulled out a map and circled where I could park, this was also helpful. I put my stuff in my room and went to go searching for parking. 30min and a couple drives against traffic on a one way street later :'(... I PARALLEL Parked (I DID THAT!) a few blocks up, and ran back to the Hostel. I got ready for bed, and set my stuff out to get up less than 6 hrs later... The pictures of the room are pretty accurate. The WiFi was strong in my room! (YES!) The TV wasn't working, or, at least, I couldn't figure out how to turn it on. It helps that there is a sink in the room, and 2 towels, soap... The bed was a little itchy, so I slept on top of the covers. The room and lock felt secure. My room was cool, and the window was open. I like that there were two bathrooms, someone was singing in the shower so I used the other one. The toilet and shower was clean. I always bring shower shoes (cheap pair of flip flops) to hostels, so I was good. Overall: -The staff was nice and very helpful, especially with the parking situation. -FRONT DESK CLOSES 11PM. -It is a hostel, with a "college student friendly" price, so you get what you pay for. -You get your own room, the room was clean, well lit, and had strong wifi signal. -The bathrooms were clean, cleaner than other hostels I have stayed at. -I would stay here again. read more

ZERO STARS. This place is a dump. I'm not fancy at all, and I was disgusted staying here. I was so scared for bed bugs, although We didn't find any in either of my two rooms, I found a ton of dirt and grossness behind the bed when I moved it. My bathroom had absolutely no toilet paper. There was trash that wasn't mine behind the trash can, which had "holiday inn" on it. There were hairs on the ground that didn't belong to me. The towels are the roughest, thinnest little devils you've ever seen. Everything is dirty, broken, or missing. And huge thing - no AC. They will give you a fan, but you have the request it, they will not offer. The hotel team is not very friendly or accommodating. Spend the extra money and go to a nicer hotel, you won't regret it! read more

It was horrible. Cheap and horrible. Bad smell everywhere - in the room and in the hostel, the walls are painted in a depressive green color...why? We were there in May and I'm very cold in my room. In the room there was no one hanger, and the curtains hung on one nail. But yes, I was glad to see the fridge and washbasin in the room. No more. I give you 2* for cheap price only. read more

Unfortunately, Europa Hostel in San Francisco is not on the best hostels, it's not even a medium one. While traveling across the US for three months, I was going up the West Coast and needed a place to stay. I arrived to San Francisco after two tiring days of camping up Big Sir with a new friend, and craved a comfortable bed. As I always do, I logged into some hostel booking websites, and looked at the cheap places with availability. Europa Hostel was set in a very good location, the middle of downtown San Francisco, very close to Market street. That meant they I could do most of my traveling by foot. We made our reservations before going with our card (with no fees) & paid on-site in cash. The office is located on the second story inside the building, which we we buzzed to get in. We met the owner who was VERY FRIENDLY. My friend and I stayed one night. Our room was very hot during the day but we were provided with a fan and a screen that we could place in the window. It's mid June and the SF air kept our room coolER at night. We had WiFi, cable and a VERY GOOD mini fridge. There's no curfew and you can come n gonas you please. We were within walking distance to clubs (both and dancing) pride and dab lounges. read more

I wasn't able to access my email so I couldn't find the reservation confirmation number but he was very helpful and hopeful, like he did not give up. I can almost guarantee you that the bad reviews are coming from Americans who were expecting this to be a hotel. Its a hostel, people. Had you payed any attention to the details of your booking, you'd have known there's a shared bathroom, so that's not something you can say negatively and its not something that's uncommon in hostels. The two flights of stairs are a bit steep and there is no elevator, so you should be prepared for that in advance and obviously not book here if you are psychically disabled. We were offered help with our bags by staff, and I would assume if you ask them for help they will supply it. The lobby is clean and open, the only thing that struck us as alarming was the swastika we saw, which we quickly realized was because they were Buddhists when we noticed the Buddha in the back corners of the desks, so no need to be alarmed by that, its actually a sign of peace! The shared bathrooms were clean and fully stocked with toilet paper, no issue there. There is no mirror in the shared bathroom as its not where youre supposed to be doing your hair and makeup, there is however a mirror in your room, where that should happen. Youre in the red light district, right between two strip clubs. We personally had no issue with this and felt perfectly safe, and you should too, the police precinct is literally right down the street, and sex workers are not the demons they're made out to be. We were here during a festival and slept perfectly fine, so Im not sure where the noise complaints come from. Our bedroom was nice, very spacious and open. The beds were comfortable, we did a check for bed bugs, found none and didn't wake up with any bites so it seems that they're good on that front. There isn't AC (again this is a hostel not a hotel people, there's a difference), which wasn't too much of an issue for us we just made sure to keep the windows open and it was fine. We did make the mistake of realizing that you have to plug the refrigerator in yourself the morning after having put our food in it, so that's something to note for future reference. Youre within walking distance of basically everything and there's tons of restaurants around. Overall, for the price and the area we definitely enjoyed our stay here quite a lot and will most likely return if we come down to San Francisco again! read more

I paid $60 for a single queen room with a communal bathroom. And for a hostel, yeah that's sort of expensive. But all the hotels around were $150+. So, okay hostel it is. Pulling up, I wasn't so sure. As its a little hole in the wall, literally. A little door in a wall with a ton of graffitti. We parked and there was a homeless lady there high of something outside my window just waiting for us to get out so she could ask us for money. Ugh! I hate that. Well, we got in and the guy at the desk was genuinely nice. He had a conversation with us and it was very welcoming. We got to our room and there was a sink, mirror, microwave, and mini-fridge inside and the bathroom was down the hall. the bed was cleaned and the floor was clean. And not once did I feel unsafe after what went on outside. My reason for 4 stars is that the toilet could be upgraded and I didn't like how there was 2 showers and 2 toilets for the whole floor. It was hard to grab one in the morning. Also, the room was a little dim with one light. Adding an extra light in there would make all the difference! Just had a friend stay here for two nights, he was traveling to SF from Belgium. He said it was the worst hotel experience he's ever had. Homeless people and prostitutes and drug dealers everywhere, just horrible. He checked out and crashed at our place for the final three nights. I would never recommend this place to anyone, ever. Negative reviews about this place must be from people expecting it to be a hotel. Its a HOSTEL. I have never stayed in an american hostel before but the staff was super friendly, funny, helpful. The room was clean for a hostel. I usually expect to see at least ants but not here, no bugs at all. The shower situation is a little rough as is the neighborhood. I live in new york city and i still felt uneasy walking from the bus. My only truly negative review is there is no common area, is that normal in american hostels? The price was fair but once we got here and saw we were in the straight ghetto, had to park our car a couple blocks down to the closest pay lot and crack heads were all around, dirty room and out dated walls and doors, saw a cockroach within 5 min of being in our room, he's our new friend for the night. We got a private room and our basic needs were met for a night. Tv works! This is our first time in a hostel, I hope they aren't all this bad. The man at the desk was thorough and kind and seemed to be on top of everything. It was definitely a memorable experience, but I wouldn't come back to this location. One of the worst hostels imaginable. I booked a room with two beds online, I get here and the room has a single bed. All the bathrooms on my floor were clogged and it appeared as if human waste and urine were spilling over the toilet seat. To top it off the bed had bed bugs. We found about 4 crawling around. There was definitely an abundance of health codes being violated. The management did nothing to correct the problem. Overall horrible experience. STAY AWAY. read more

I mixed up the reservation-dates and he let us stay at his place for no extra charges. For the rest I couldn't agree more with Ariel. The area is just NOT GOOD! Dealer, Junkies, Prostitutes, homeless people...you name it. There even was a shooting the first night we arrived & police shut down 6th street. Oh hello, welcome to SF. So its not the Ritz, but honestly the Europa Hostel on 6th Street is a terrific place to stay if you are a budget-minded traveler. The rooms are well-appointed and clean and the location is quite convenient to anywhere in the city. Market Street is two blocks to the north and the Moscone Convention Center is two blocks to the east. Carlos who runs the place is simply awesome, the finest most endearing hotel proprietor any traveler could hope for... and that includes the Ritz! The Europa Hostel's nightly rate for a comfortable bed in San Francisco is the best value in the city! Beyond the great value, the Europa Hostel is a very fine hotel experience. Wow... cannot explain how grateful I am that Europa Hostel exists. My boyfriend and I came to San Francisco for Outside lands music festival, and after a huge screw up with our other hotel, we found a last minute room at Europa. The staff was so friendly and accomodating, and while the place is obviously not the nicest, it is worth the price. We felt pretty comfortable in the hotel despite the sketchy area, and I would stay here again if I was on a tight budget. read more

Spent the day in Sf and it got pretty late so I found this place that was most financially convenient for the night. I payed about $60-70 for one night. Regular queen bed, it was an additional cost for a bathroom in the room so didn't get one, glad I had my own blanket, the quilt had old gum stuck onto it, I didn't even want to tuck into the sheets the place provided. Not only that but it was just a random weekend I stayed in and there was SUCH LOUD MUSIC playing, I'm pretty sure there was either a club right next door or someone right next to my room with a boombox. Literally didn't even fall asleep until 3 am. Such a last resort place to stay, but there's a mexican place conveniently right next door that fortunately stays open past 12 pm in which case you can't sleep and get a case of the munchies. read more

I loved this place. It mightn't be for everybody though. It's a cheap Hostel/Motel, located on 6th Street (An extension of the Tenderloin). If you walk on the side streets and move walk along Fifth or Fourth Street, you should be fine. Now that the negative stuff is out of the way, I'll get started on the positive. The owners are really nice, genuinely helpful, and despite 6th Street itself, it's a wonderful location for the price you're paying. Near the Bart, the MUNI and most of the major bus services, this is an ideal spot for somebody looking for a cheap spot to view the city's wonderful sights and sounds. Good Work Guys!! read more

So much to say about this filthy hotel, this is the worst hotel Ever. There is no shower or toilet in your room only in the hallway, you have to share with other people and they're actually 2 showers and 2 toilets for the whole floor. The outside of this hotel looks sketchy, when I made a booking for this hotel months before I was expecting there to be a big sign saying "Europa" but instead I find graffiti saying "Europa." You can't read the graffiti name sign in night time only daylight --- so keep this in mind if you do decide to stay here. The area is very dangerous. No parking provided from Europa Hostel. Parking hard to find in the surrounding area. *****DANGEROUS PEOPLE WILL BREAK INTO YOUR CAR, OUR FAMILY CAR GOT BROKEN INTO***** Also false ratings given here, don't understand how this place could get any good reviews. The owner Carlos lies about advertisements of this place. There are window views from this hotel like in the pictures. Pictures don't resemble what the hotel is like in person. What I found the most inconvenient was that there is no bathroom in your room. You have to share 2 bathrooms with the whole floor. Very dirty bathrooms. And no privacy of using bathrooms, people surrounding rooms can hear everything. Dirty hotel room as well. Not well kept hotel. In a very dangerous and bad area.
