This review is about renting out the hotel for an event. DO IT. My sister had her wedding here and it was EPIC. She rented out all 40 rooms, which was easy to do since everyone traveling to her wedding needed lodging. It made it seem like we had our own oasis in the middle of the City. Every room gets one spot of parking. The staff was super sweet and helpful. The food from Chambers was really good! My sister was able to bring in all the entertainment she wanted - dancing pole, mechanical bull, three DJs, silent disco. The pool was heated and allegedly salt water. I took a dip during the wedding reception. There was a cocktail crawl to four of the rooms because it's a hotel - you can bring your own alcohol to your rooms. Like I said - EPIC. The place was sold to a new owner, but the staff said the ownership is continuing the hotel. Definitely check it out for an event space and keep this historic rock & roll hotel going! read more

Booked a king room online, arrive and ask to be upgraded to a king suite. After waiting a few minutes I'm told they have a new online system and the people who actually operate the bookings are out of state. I said ok well that just makes everything complicated. After waiting about 45 min I asked to just keep the king room, but was told a king room was only available for one night after I had booked the king room for 2 nights. I was offered to stay in a king suite for one night but then would have to move to a king room the next day. At that point I said I'll just cancel and keep my money. This hotel is operated poorly and it seems they overbook rooms in order to get the financial benefits. The 2 employees at the front desk were friendly at least, but I won't be booking anymore rooms here. read more

I was surprised to find such a lovely and unique hotel in the tenderloin, but the Phoenix Hotel is like its own little world. They do pool parties and events here, but we enjoyed our stay without all that. The service was friendly and efficient, no problems finding parking in their private lot or getting checked in on a Saturday afternoon. The courtyard is chic, with plenty of seating for lounging around the pool which is heated and closes at midnight. There are seats and tables outside each room, and floor-to-ceiling windows that provide an awesome setting and ambience, with red lighting above the beds, and all necessary amenities for a pleasant experience... temperature control, comfy bed, ironing board, hair dryer, clean towels, closet space and hangers, large flat screen TV, sufficient outlets for charging phones, plenty of lighting, and extra tables/seating inside the room. If I am nitpicking, I'd say there was a lack of counter space in the bathroom and no hardware for hanging towels, but we managed. Plus there was beautiful artwork both inside the room and throughout the premises, as well as a great bar and restaurant on site. read more

Stayed for a Saturday evening to Sunday noon for a music event at bill graham. Close enough to walk to the venue or take a cheap Uber. Free parking which isn't offered at many inner city San Francisco hotels, or cost a daily premium. Retro interior both at the check in booth and the interior atrium area surrounding the pool. They had a flamingo float for use aha I love it Considering I've spent the same for a night for SKETCHY hotels I felt not only comfortable parking here but also staying here. Definitely added to one of my potential go to San Francisco options. Shout out to the gentleman in the morning with the glasses. I also had a hotels app bonus giving me a food/ drink credit They honored that for me and provided me some snackies for my weekend. 12/10 for this place lol the Phoenix was amazing!! My trip to San Francisco was a long time coming; I had originally planned this trip for July 2020 but then something called COVID happened which put this on the back-burner until this summer. I had planned to stay at the Phoenix Hotel back in 2020, so to make things easy I decided to keep the same accommodations and just rebook for this year (also helped that I thought this place looked super cool). Like most of my hotel reviews, I'll break this down into pros and cons - so here we go! Let's start with the pros. History and aesthetics are definitely a pro for me - historically the Phoenix catered to touring musicians, and as such the hotel is rock music themed. The entire vibe is alternative, but it's also accessible to a majority of lodgers. From what I can gather, the Phoenix looks like a converted motor lodge - there are only 40ish rooms spread across two levels, but it has been completely updated and looks great. I also gather that this is somewhat of a party hotel - this definitely attracts a young crowd, and the hotel hosts pool parties and has a roster of musicians and DJs that perform (though I did see families during my stay here too). All of the rooms line the perimeter of a lovely courtyard which contains different types of lounge chairs, tents, tables, and a heated pool. Rooms are another pro for me - they're not the most high end rooms (this is not that type of hotel), but have everything one would need: comfortable beds, a TV, a safe, an iron, as well as laundry service which I did not expect. Housekeeping is available, though by request only (which I find to be the norm post-COVID). Extras are another perk - their on-site restaurant, called Chambers, serves good drinks surrounded by awesome aesthetics - they also have a second bar area which I assume serves for musical performances and DJs. The lobby also has some merch and snacks available for purchase. For cons, there aren't many - though the most noteworthy one is location. The Phoenix is located in the Tenderloin, which is not the best part of SF. This is not an area where I would walk around at night, which limits what you can do if you're the type of person who likes to roam around your hotel's vicinity in the evening. That being said, the Phoenix does an excellent job with safety - they have someone at the front desk 24/7, the courtyard/room area remains locked all the time and is only accessible via your room key, and they provide a safe place to keep your car since break-ins are apparently a real issue in the city. I never felt unsafe during my stay here, much to the credit of the hotel staff. I want to close this by again giving credit to the staff at The Phoenix - Orlando and his team do an excellent job providing a cool place where you can relax and enjoy your time in SF. Every staff member we encountered were warm, friendly, and eager to help. That, combined with the vibes and accommodations make the Phoenix a standout among its peers. read more

I have deep affection for this hotel. It has a vibe--it's fun, it has character and its guests are characters. The Phoenix has got the basics right: the beds are comfortable, the rooms are clean, the pool is heated, and the coffee is strong. The surrounding eating establishments have great food, even if the ambiance tends towards grungy. If you want the Hilton, stay at the Hilton, this isn't that. But if you appreciate real people, a real place and can go with flow, come here. read more

I haven't stayed overnight here but I did attend an event here so wanted to rate this place as a venue. It has a fairly large outdoor space which makes for a great dance floor. The acoustics for live music was good and I like how they strung lights everywhere. The bathroom situation kinda sucked. There's only one bathroom for each gender, two stalls each. That is crazy small for hosting large events. It's also in the tenderloin which is a very sketch area. There were legit several transients right outside the wall of the hotel. I'm glad we were in a group but I wouldn't have felt safe by myself. read more

Had a nice little staycation over the Halloween weekend. Check in was extremely easy and staff was friendly. The room was clean and cozy. The space heater worked very well on a chilly night. The bed was comfortable and I slept well though the night. I didn't get to try the heated pool but it looked clean and others seemed to enjoy it. Prices were reasonable for SF. My only downside was the music playing very loudly outside facing the rooms - there were no guests in the outside area to enjoy it and it was extremely loud until almost midnight. Woke up super hungover and dove into the pool, it's heated to about 90 degrees. Their restaurant is first class, although we didn't dine there this time. I was hesitant to stay here but it was close to where I needed to be for the weekend and the reviews helped. Rooms were clean and big, we had an emergency so we went from 2 people staying there to 5 and it worked out fine. Beds were comfy and big enough for two people each. Cute "Palms Springs" vibe to the whole hotel. The front staff were friendly and very attentive, love that they had coffee and donuts for us in the mornings. Not sure if they do that every day but we lucked out with that service. Due to the emergency, we had an extra vehicle and we were able to pay for one night in the parking lot, even though it was extra. Parking was $25 plus tax a night but waaaaaay cheaper than the surrounding hotels that charged $50-80 a night. Super nice and helpful staff. They do have events here, which is cool but not cool if you need to get some sleep. Just bring ear plugs like I do and it's fine. I enjoyed our stay. The place is surrounded with the unhoused and addicts but the parking lot and hotel felt like a little safe haven amongst the yuckyness around the city. Big props to the staff! read more

A quick review to point out several great aspects of the Phoenix Hotel in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco. The hotel feels like one of the post-Modern boutique hotels in Palm Springs and throughout California now. It has a rich and colorful history that is very much celebrated and alive in the hotel. The rooms are quirky, fun and colorful and very much in the style you'd expect. The rooms encircle the pool and the incredibly popular restaurant (Brenda's) and bar. They are clearly a destination for those not staying at the hotel. One of the reasons I'm writing this review - aside from enjoying our time at the hotel - is because of the Manager, Orlando, who was so nice and so accommodating and so charming. He helped me out of a pickle I had gotten myself into regarding my reservation and the dates that I had gotten wrong, etc. We would go back JUST TO see him again. Everyone who worked there was extremely nice. I will say only one thing that was less than ideal and that's the neighborhood surrounding the hotel. It's rough but it's also San Francisco and the homelessness is a problem. Heartbreaking. But who am I to throw stones. I live in Los Angeles. The good news is that they have a parking lot so that's great. It's a bit tight but they make it work. So the bottom line is that we definitely recommend The Phoenix with that one small caveat which hopefully wont dissuade you from visiting. (Oh and there are quite a few good restaurants nearby. A recent trip down to the city that had been put off for months, I was looking for a location that was relatively easy access to my next morning appointment, the parking overnight wasn't $60 bucks and the bed comfortable. After reading several good reviews over a variety of review platforms, this place seemed to be a good fit for my needs. What a throw back to a much cooler, hipper time in our country. The Phoenix is just one of those places, in the middle of everything in the tenderloin, its easy to drive or walk right past it as its that unassuming. Pulling into the small private parking lot, the check in "window" is how you do it nowadays with the pandemic still an issue. Once checked in, your key through the only access gate allows you inside the interior sanctiuary that is enclosed. All rooms on both floors are basically "poolside" by definition. With all rooms doorways opening to the interior courtyard and pool area. The room was updated throughout and the bed comfortable, the only negative for room amenities missing - no mini fridge? Original artwork on the walls and that old school rock n roll feel is all around. This retro building has that true o.g. feel. The room was comfortable for overnight, the bed was comfortable and the shower had plenty of hot water the next morning. The rooms all have old school crank case windows and full glass windows on the front which is cool, but the noise level can be excessive as they do not block any of the outside sounds, footsteps, voices, luggage rolling on the walkway, its obviously loud. Ear plugs at night are a good idea if you are a light sleeper. The outside interior poolside courtyard is very comfortable and relaxed, even with people around, social distancing was easy given the sheer size of the space and all of the cool little areas to sit and enjoy the sunshine and day. Checking out was easier then checking in as you can actually access the front desk once inside the compound, via a door and under face covering. I was able to check out in a couple minutes that nexy morning and back on my journey. A big plus to this particular hotel is the free parking included with no reservations on a first come first serve basis. I literally parked within ten steps of the gateway. And, in a city where parking at the average hotel costs $45 bucks to upwards of $75 a night to park your rig... this is a huge benefit. 3.5 Stars - it may not be in the "best" part of the city but its hard to beat for price and comfort and I rounded up for the free parking thats included. 00706 read more

OMG - I stayed here during the Pandemonium because sometimes I have to travel with mask and gloves on. I was one of 5 occupants that evening. The staff was fun and friendly when I got there and grew increasingly mean and nasty as the evening went on. A good friend came over for dinner - 10 feet of distance and the delivery guy - that was my 2 people allowable maximum they said Lol. WTF = What The Heck right. A young African American guy that I had the pleasure of mentoring - came over to say hey, and the African American gentleman that worked the front desk and managed the place said "Are you sure it's okay for him to come up" hahahaha - HUH? Yes I'm sure, thanks for humiliating the young man in front of you. Yee haa to that. He's cool - doesn't take that goofy behavior to heart as I do. Then the next day another guy from my volunteer days is deaf, a completely awesome guy, they were turning him away an hour before I was checking out. Pfffft. Service has gotten worse despite there's 5% of the work to do. I called to find a place for my 18 her old daughter to stay since she was locked out of her car and stuck in the city. Their "spectacular" operations manager said their policy just changed to require guests to be 21 and older instead of 18 and he would not make an exception. Leaving an 18 year old stranded in the middle of the city because of a policy is lame the stupidest thing I can imagine. read more

Mid century nostalgia in the Tenderloin. This stylish motor-court motel was clean and safe with thoughtful staff and thorough customer service. The courtyard features a clean, warm, pool - 87 degrees - surrounded by gorgeous, luscious succulents, palms, and lounge seating. The double room was modestly sized, with large windows and great black-out curtains. Bathroom was minimal with basic fixtures, but clean. Plenty of towels, fun robes, and bath products from Lather. Beds and bedding were clean and comfortable with good mattresses. Room decor was minimalist, with rock n roll art and vibey lighting. Location is in the gritty tenderloin as described on their site. As a single female traveler who used to live here I felt fine staying in this area. There are plenty of dining and coffee shop options are an easy walk away. They also provided a great selection of drinks and snacks in the lobby and they have parking! Would stay again :) read more

More than 5 stars for Orlando!!! He was the most helpful staff I have ever encountered in any hospitality industry. He deserves all great things. We trusted the whole process because of him and he did not disappoint us. He has a great smile and made us feel very welcome. We went to Phoenix Hotel to celebrate my birthday. I was so excited as the DJ performing that day was one of my favorites. I made sure to get a room as well. I had a few questions, but the front desk guy with the fake teeth was very unfriendly. I couldn't even get his name and even his coworker was not confident giving his name out because I'm sure even he knows this guy has an attitude. This front desk guy was unreliable, unpleasant, and not helpful at all. From the phone to the time we checked in. When we finally checked in, he showed how rude he is to me and my friends who paid to be there. Then, a boss lady came to take over. She was very pleasant. A lot more helpful and made me feel more at ease. I wish I had gotten her name. She was on top of things even though it was a busy day. I wish I could give this place 5 stars since my friends and I overall had a great time, but the front desk guy with the fake teeth ruined a percentage of our experience. Really loved that place ! It's definitely giving me the look of an LA vibe and it's nine minutes walk from the Bill Graham. Super cute trendy but not bougie. Cozy too. We had a big group and got hotels for the night. Hotels were very simple and trendy, super clean and mostly the people were incredibly friendly! It definitely is great to go somewhere. Where are you? Feel like people truly appreciate your business.. I was giving off like the feel that staff are happy to be there :) not only that, but I did leave my purse ( it's a mini purse) in the room by accident, and they called me within the hour to tell me I left it. This spot is super cute and very close to the Castro district via the BART or about a 30 minute walk. Apparently I just had this review sitting as a draft. Review is for Aug 2019. Biggest beef I have with this place is the heating/cooling system. THERE IS NO COOLING SYSTEM! And if that wasn't bad enough, I couldn't turn off the heater. Even with the dial turned all the way down, there was still residual heat coming out. There is a ceiling fan, and that helps, but that only circulates the warm air. You can open the glass slats to ventilate the room, but that only works if the curtains aren't covering the windows. I just left door open cracked open during the evening. Hopefully anyone else walking by didn't think that was too weird. The bed was clean and had a comfortable Casper mattress. PROS: Convenient store across the street. Bus stop across the street as well. CONS: The chain for the door was broken. Bathroom clean but wow was that toilet small. Lighting dim. I'd give this hotel a ten if I could. I am an old lady (in my (cough) 50s) and paid incredibly lower fees for this hotel than other hotels I've stayed in, and had a much better experience. I found this hotel, by looking at the Yelp reviews... and it is living up to the enthusiastic reviews. We were thrilled as soon as we drove up....reserved parking for guests in the small private lot for this retro hotel RIGHT IN FRONT of the hotel. . . how cool is it to not have to deal with valet, park yourself right out front? And in San Francisco too! Orlando was at the front desk when we arrived. He was awesome - friendly, helpful. He acted as if we were old friends.... So warm! I had spoken to him on the phone before the trip, and he remembered our conversation. I'm such a trouble maker, wanting to change my plans at the last minute. I had booked the hotel starting for a certain date, and asked last minute if it would be possible to come in earlier for an extra night and stay in a special suite / room for my baby's bday, and then switch to the "regular" room that I had booked for five days. He not only got me the great special room I wanted, but he also was able to get me a very, very nice rate for a room that ordinarily $400, even though we were coming in for a Saturday night . . . I was so surprised and pleased when I got the confirming email. The amazing suite - with a separate seating / living room area from the master bedroom has a super cool, retro vibe, and a small out door patio. The coolest part of the suite (Room 43) was that in the master bedroom has a WORKING LP player with several old school LPs - AWESOME! We played Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor..... baby wanted to save Luther Vandross for later lol.... Orlando had recommended some special restaurants for baby's bday. We decided we would check out the hotel restaurant since it was right there, get a drink and then go to the other restaurants . The restaurant, Chambers, is a beautiful, romantic venue, with amazing yelp reviews. We ended up scrapping our plans to move onto another place and ordered appetizers and drinks there, which were delicious. (This is another yelp review). I mention our trip to the beautiful restaurant because towards the end of our evening, our server brought over a delicious chocolate dessert with a candle on top. "How did you know it was his birthday?!" I asked.... Our server said that Orlando had been in earlier and saw us there, and had them bring it for baby's birthday. ISN'T THAT SWEET? I moved into the King deluxe room this afternoon. No extra living area, or LP player, but this is still wonderful. Lots of windows. This room, has a cool wrap around large outside deck that gives it an open feel if I felt like it, I would be able to leave fido outside. Oh, somewhere I read there was no dog fee but apparently there is. This is no biggie, I would prefer of course not to pay a fee, but it seems nominal - I think they said it was $25. The hotel is in the Tenderloin area, which is a little rougher, in terms of many homeless camped out on the streets. Some are mentally ill, and I heard some dude yelling loudly as he walked by. We walked this morning to a restaurant in lower Nob Hill less than a mile a way, and had to maneuver amongst the tents, and other places where you shouldn't step. Ick. So, if that bothers you, beware. Orlando also suggested just Ubering it, and I think that should have been what we should have done. There are however the BEST Vietnamese sandwich places in SF (I did my Yelp research!) - both right across the street from the hotel! (As is a small liquor store where I bought some supplies). If you love Vietnamese sandwiches, and spring rolls like I do, you will be in heaven! My meeting is by City Hall which is only three blocks away, so I'm gonna walk! I'm not going to have to pay those expensive parking fees like I did last year, which is a huge plus. For years I've had to come to San Francisco for trainings. I've stayed in many other hotels, AirBnB, in and out of the city, and this by far is the best, and where I intend to stay when I visit SF in the future for sure. read more

i stayed here on a weekend not knowing that there was an event happening at the hotel. there was some kind of dj party event happening, even once i got inside of my room it was so loud there was no way to drown out the outside noise. the room itself was very basic, the bed was comfy, the shower had good water pressure. the room did not have a microwave, fridge, or ac, and there's very little counter space in the bathroom to put anything. some good things- the staff is very friendly, there's a pool, a private parking lot, and the hotel itself feels safe even though it's in a not so safe area. overall i probably would not stay here again, not horrible, just not my taste. read more

It all started with a great first impression with Ashley being awesome helping with the reservations. The hotel is in a sketchy area, but there are locks and a private parking lot. It is close to a lot of restaurants and within a short walking distance to FiDi, Union Square and other attractions. Just make sure to Uber (even for short distances) at night. If you want to stay in the city, this is an unfortunate aspect that few places can avoid. The hotel looks just like the pictures on their website. It definitely has a San Francisco feel, which can also mean it's not for the conservative or shy. For example, the wall next to the entrance is a glass wall. Unless you close the night shades, people can see into your room. The hotel is clean, the staff are friendly and the cost is very affordable given the location. Definitely coming back. read more

This place has amazing events and a unique aesthetic for sure. However, for the price of this place, it was not worth it. First, the security for the rooms was all over the place. We went during an event, so there were different wristbands for different kinds of access. When we first tried to re-enter our room, the guard forgot(?) which wristband meant what and we had to wait a while for him to confirm we could go up to our own room. Secondly, our friend who has an event wristband left some stuff with us and wanted to grab it from our room. Understandably he couldn't go up, but we saw the guard let others up with the wrong wristband so that was a little off putting. Next, to turn on the TV we needed a remote and couldn't find one anywhere. We didn't check for this when we checked into our room bc we were busy enjoying the event. When we inquired about it later that night, the front desk guy just told us "he trusted his employees to have the room ready" and offered no alternatives. Lastly, the damn showerhead didn't even work! And again, when we inquired about it, asking about moving rooms, they told us it was too late to switch as we had been in the room for some hours now. There were plenty of empty rooms, even one right next to us. I wanted to support a boutique hotel but this was a huge mf disappointment. read more

A++ for decor. Water could be a bit hotter and if you have a loud room next to you you will hear them because of the shape of the hotel, but it's a very small price to pay. Great customer service love Orlando and the workers at the front desk ! Definitely a little gem in the middle of San Fran ! Called and booked the same day a few hours ahead of time pet friendly and my kids loved the heated pool wasn't very crowded. Private parking area the area around the outside is a little rough with junkies but you forget about it once inside the hotel. We would definitely come back.
